liberalskateboardist@reddit
yes but in general, southern europeans and middle easterners looks very similar- black hair and black beards hehe
Radiant_Put_3609@reddit
There’s no such thing as southern europeans and middle easterners as clean, separate categories. Those boundaries mostly exist in your head. The regions have been mixing, trading, migrating, and influencing each other for thousands of years. Trying to draw a hard line between them is more about modern labels than reality.
Few_Dot6881@reddit
They absolutely are separate categories... Don't parade around like you're an authority on genetics when it's evident you know very little about the subject.
Radiant_Put_3609@reddit
“absolutely separate categories” yeah, because history totally respected your neat little boxes, right, lol?
Thousands of years of mixing, migration, and empires, and you still think humans come in clean presets. That’s not genetics, that’s just you being confidently clueless, smartass.
liberalskateboardist@reddit

Look up the genetic profile of a Turk, then look up the genetic profile of an Italian.
Turk average (Ankara):
Anatolian Neolithic Farmer: 41.8%
Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer: 22.4%
Zagros Neolithic Farmer: 14.0%
European Hunter-Gatherer: 8.4%
East Siberian Hunter-Gatherer: 4.6%
Yellow River Neolithic Farmer: 3.6%
Mongolia Hunter-Gatherer: 3.4%
Natufian Hunter-Gatherer: 1.4%
South American Hunter-Gatherer: 0.4%
Italian average (Rome/Lazio):
Anatolian Neolithic Farmer: 62.8%
European Hunter-Gatherer: 16.0%
Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer: 13.6%
Zagros Neolithic Farmer: 7.6%
Source: Illustrative DNA database
Turks have an average of 10 ancient genetic components.
Europeans have an average of 3 ancient genetic components.
4 in some places in southern Europe.
You're the clueless one. Turks are not "basically Europeans", no matter how much you wish that were the case.
Radiant_Put_3609@reddit
bro 10 components so it’s a completely separate category is not the argument you think it is. you literally listed the same sources anatolian neolithic farmer, caucasus hunter gatherer, zagros neolithic farmer, then acted like different ratios magically create hard borders, trolololo. that’s not population genetics, that’s just misreading clustering models and forcing them into neat boxes ffs. humans are gradients, not presets. you are trying to prove separate categories with evidence that literally shows shared ancestry and overlap. your own data disproves you, you just don’t realize it, lol.
Few_Dot6881@reddit
Sure bro, then Swedes and Syrians don't exist and they're basically the same thing, look:
Anatolian Neolithic Farmer :36.2%
Zagros Neolithic Farmer :28.0%
Natufian Hunter-Gatherer :22.4%
Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer :9.0%
European Hunter-Gatherer :1.6%
Sub-Saharan African :1.2%
East African Savanna Pastoralist :0.8%
North African Hunter-Gatherer :0.6%
East Siberian Hunter-Gatherer :0.2%
European Hunter-Gatherer :47.6%
Anatolian Neolithic Farmer :30.6%
Caucasus Hunter-Gatherer :21.8%
-------------------------------------
See? The same names occur that means they're actually just social constructs and are basically the same category. Just stop embarrassing yourself and educate yourself on genetics.

We should remember it's a style of picture, it doesn't necessarily a realistic portrait. Realism came way after
BardhyliX@reddit
If you look at the paintings of some aristocrats who were alive to see the camera and also simultaneously had paintings of them done, it's very funny to see the difference.
Round_Difference_470@reddit
Yes, indeed. I'd also add that this particular byzantine style is not a realistic style, but rather anon-naturalistic symbolical one.
BardhyliX@reddit
I'm actually curious about the actual origin of these paintings? Were they done out of memory or did the person sit down to let the painter work on it - because aren't these found in walls and churches in the Balkans? I doubt they were in a remote place just to let a painter do his work.
Round_Difference_470@reddit
No, they didn't have the person sit down. Mostly because these are murals, so they just glue stones to a wall, but also because the objective wasn't realism, it was to follow a certain "way" or "style" of the church.
Hodorization@reddit
Obviously the artists would know how to portray people, that's how they practice their style. But yeah for churches at that time, what the patron expected was that the images should transcend the here and now, and show idealized, "eternal" ideas of people in certain roles. If the image looked like someone they knew, then it would not be right

Most Turks would probably agree we’re mainly Anatolian in heritage (shaped over time by civilizations like the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, and obviously the Ottomans) with some Central Asian ancestry mixed in. But framing it as “you’re just Muslim Greeks” is you know... cringe as well.

If you need to go centuries back into history to use that as your main source of identity because of your inferiority complex, despite not sharing a language, religion, or culture to the point that the very people you are trying to cosplay would consider you as a stranger that you could not even communicate with, then I'm sorry my friend, but in my opinion that is cringe as hell, and you need to develop your personality.
Defiant-Strength2010@reddit
I don't understand what you mean by cosplaying, all languages and the rest of the culture changed so much we would all be strangers to our ancestors of several hundreds of years ago. If the guy lives in the same area as his ancestors then at what point it becomes cosplaying?
People of Ireland are struggling to revive their Gaelic language, that was only spoken by around 17k people over 100 years ago, is that cosplaying?
The only clear example that I would call "cosplaying" is Israeli settlers who revived/invented the Hebrew language that had 0 speakers for over a thousand years, and changed their names to sound more Middle Eastern. A guy from Turkey liking Rome makes more sense than a guy from Italy liking Rome, the history of Rome in Turkey is much more recent. I doubt he changed his name to Marcus and started speaking Latin, so why would you call that cosplaying?
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
yeah,
Turkic speaking Muslims "have more in common" w/ Romans compared to Latin Italians.

Fearless-Salad-6298@reddit
Greece was not formed at that time.
The ancient world was a continuum of Thracia, thus Anatolian === Greek === Persian === Afghan.
Claiming the pre-Slavic Balkans was anyhow Anatolian completely erases the Thracians, who were historically one of the largest ethnic groups in Europe.
Herodotus (the "Father of History") literally said that the Thracians were the most numerous people in the world after the Indians. You know what they formed?
The Odrysian Kingdom
By the time of this mosaic (6th century), the region was a mix of populations.
In fact, the general in that mosaic, Belisarius, was born in the heart of the Balkans (modern Bulgaria), not Anatolia.
I get the Russians not willing to claim that to Bulgaria and would rather eradicate an entire nation by inviting the term 'slavs', but it's the first nation on this continent, sorry fellow Balkan neighbors, truth has got to be told, Oki komşu?
P. S. Check a few Thracian tribes:
A. The Phrygians: Ancient historians, including Herodotus, recorded that the Phrygians (famous for King Midas and their Anatolian kingdom) actually originated in the Balkans as a Thracian tribe called the Bryges before crossing over into Asia Minor.
B. The Bithynians: This was a literal Thracian tribe that crossed the Bosporus straight out of the Balkans and settled in northwestern Anatolia. The entire region of Bithynia was named after them, didn't you have a metro stop called like that in Istanbul?
P. S. 2 I'm sick of people being able to go online, despite being brainwashed by their dictator and yet never managing to educate themselves properly

because Goths migrated in the Balkans before the Slavs?
Barbak86@reddit
Balkans was quite empty because of unrest and the pestilence, but not completely empty when the goths passed through (they didn't really settle) and when the Slavs came.
Even the most Slavic among the Slavs have 60% Slavic heritage, whatever that means. The rest falls as low 20-30%
In the end of the day the way, how we look now is not that different how "we" looked back then. Even prior to the fall of Rome there have been people moving around, Rome was a multiethnic empire and this region never had "one face"
JucheMystic@reddit
Nobody falls to 20-30%. All slavic countries in the Balkans range from 40-65+% Slavic

Justinian literally spoke Greek with an accent. This is a historic fact. Greeks can f off
Consistent-Sun-354@reddit
Justinian was a native Latin speaker indeed of Romano-Thracian background. His uncle “Justin the Thracian” likely still spoke a Daco-thracian dialect(possibly a precursor to the Albanian language since he was from Niš as well, where Proto-Albanian dominated before Slavs).
CandidDebate6827@reddit
Can't be sure about the Daco-Thracian. Justin I was either Illyro-Roman or Thraco-Roman. Can't be sure about that, because we have no records of the Dardanian language. And whether in these regions any paleobalkanic language was spoken at all after all these centuries of Roman dominance is to be doubted as well. I would argue that the only remnants of a not fully romanized paleobalkanic at those times (450-600) were most likely in the mountainous regions of today's north Albania -> later becoming Albanian. One serious theory
Consistent-Sun-354@reddit
They were all Romano-Thracian. They and their family literally described their family roots as Daco-Thracian only. Illyria was extended region that at the time denoted the whole peninsula while still being its own region west of Serbia.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Why not Illyro-Roman?or you consider Thracians illyrians too
Consistent-Sun-354@reddit
Because they weren’t Illyrian. Julian the Apostate who was a part of the Constaninian dynasty himself wrote that the family was explicitly of Daco-Thracian roots. Considering Niš material culture is also Daco-Thracian it just generally adds up. Not to mention the genetic makeup of Roman era locals of that region not being Illyrian. The Illyrian boundaries were mostly from Raška/about half of Kosovo to the Adriatic. Not as far in as Moesia which was exclusively Daco-Thracian.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
That is just BS ,Nis was Illyrian,Justinian on the other hand was born in Tauressium ,Dardania. Dacians and Thracians were more east where modern Romanian and Bulgarian are nowadays. Scholars do not know for sure the origins of those guys because ethnic identity at that time is completely different today ,my initial comment was referred to Greeks claiming them is ridicolous I do not another Romanian(you ) claiming them😂😂

Did you ever ask yourself why Balkan Slavs don’t look like poles or Russians?
_Caligulean_@reddit
I look like a typical Slavic person and I am anywhere between 40-60% according to various tests. We are darker than others on average because we mixed with Roman-Era natives
whatevergirl8754@reddit
Our mix is generally 60-70% Slavic, 20-30% Illyrian and for some folks 10% Celtic/Gothic.
So of course since we are genetically mostly Slavic, we will mostly look like Slavs - since we are, but the other admixtures will slightly separate us and what we sometimes look like from our eastern and western Slavic brethren.
Sad_Philosopher_3163@reddit
According to the latest study, Croats and Bosniaks are around 65% Slavic, while Serbs are around 55–60%. There are plenty of people who could pass in Ukraine, just as there are many Ukrainians who could pass in Croatia, there is an overlap. Russians are additionally admixed with Uralics, while Poles are admixed with Germanics, both around. The average adult Western or Eastern Slav is not blonde, but brown haired.

Before the Indo-European languages, way before the Slavic migrations and Turkic migrations, the Balkans were settled by what we now call Early European Farmers or Anatolian Neolithic Farmers. This is the population that built Vinča for instance. We all still have a really solid chunk of that ancestry. Greeks and Albanians have the most, followed by Romanians, Bulgarians and Macedonians, followed by the rest of ex-Yugoslavia plus western Turkey. The highest percentage of EEF ancestry is in Sardinia iirc, so that's vaguely what they looked like.

Slavs include two major haplogroups - I2 which originated in the Balkans 30,000 years ago and R1a which migrated to Balkans 10,000 years ago. There was no Slavic settlement in 6th century, you need to stop with that nonsense.
Substratas@reddit
pohanii_isus@reddit
wym there is no slavic settlement in 6th century
No_Designer_8203@reddit
There was none. Just look at the haplogroups.
Weak-Abbreviations15@reddit
Haplogroups are homogenized due to intermixing.
No_Designer_8203@reddit
They're passed from father to son.
Weak-Abbreviations15@reddit
Yes, so local men interbred with slavic women. And vice versa.
Total local vs imigratory gene pools define modern gene pool dynamics.
Also keep in mind that due to the three illyrian uprisings, the Romans culled large parts of northen illyria, in terms of population, which even though in centuries replenished itself, it lacked true density, thus making migrations much easier to slavs.
Additionally:
I2 branches which are associated with slavic populations, specifically I2a-L621 / PH908-type branches are not native to the balkans, and spread out around the 7-8th century, based on archeological evidence. .
R1a-Z282, is scarcely present in non-slavic populations (but still exists due to the intermixing), but it appeared in the archeological evidence, post 7th-8th century.
Regardless of the above, 1-2k years presence in the balkans is more than enough to be considered a true balkanite. It's just that modern conflicts and politics, make populations feel that theres more differences between us than similarities, which is not a true representation of reality, both culturally and genetically.
Substantial-Peach-90@reddit
Haplogroups /= ancestry

Likewise that spread through Armenia, Azerbaijan and other Middle East countries neighboring the Ps motherland.
That same Russification made Greeks living in Greece believe they were descendants of Thracia. Greeks nowadays are descendants of some Afghan tribes, while Balkans are the countries on the Balkan Peninsula, not on the Anatolia, so go an hide in a bunker or smth

Who the fuck actually cares? Hair colour doesn't prove superiority, doesn't prove nobility, it hardly even proves ethnicity, it doesn't provide any sociological or political importance. I don't care if this dude was from Kayseri or Kalamata as long as he was a Byzantine noble doing Byzantine stuff.

Nobody says anything but god forbid someone says ''I am greek, turkish, albanian'' whatever. We dive deep. That's what men still look like today; these facial features have been largely preserved in the Mediterranean, Anatolian, and also among the Kakaus population.
