Why are pilots oversupplied now?

Not a pilot, just curious as to why.

Not a pilot, just curious as to why.
jetstrea87@reddit
I have been hearing pilot shortage since 2009.
ASSTORIA92@reddit
Going straight from cfi to a320 fo was unheard ever. It was a shortage. Same with regional pilots starting at 100k.
Basic supply and demand. There was a huge shortage during/after covid.
Everything tends to find its equilibrium eventually.
alti2d@reddit
I’ve been hearing it since 1995. 🤷♂️
Healthy-Sort-7293@reddit
The industry is still recovering from the pratt engine problem, the reduced capacity, ATC reductions and now oil prices. Its just economics, it will cycle back and forth.
Ok-Money2811@reddit
Ahh the Mythical pilot shortage….it was happening…guaranteed….next year when I walked into a flight school for the first time around 2004.
FliGirl101@reddit
Up in Canada the shortage is real with no end in sight. Small employers struggle to keep staff for even a season. 2000 hours is all it takes to get to the major, wages are still too low so flight schools are empty of students and instructors.
Nearby-Medicine9484@reddit
Oversupplied? Are you sure about that?
ma33a@reddit
10 year cycle. Back at the bottom of the cycle again.
Ted_Striker02@reddit
If you think this is the bottom you’re gonna get really disappointed.
ma33a@reddit
Nah I'm good, LHS widebody.
the_devils_advocates@reddit
So, out of touch then. We’re nowhere near the bottom.
320sim@reddit
I think that’s more of a coincidence. I really don’t think this is anything like 2001, 2008, or 2020
JediCheese@reddit
Yet. It's not there yet.
The LCC go under and the pilot market is going to be flooded with experienced guys.
Ok-Money2811@reddit
^^^^^…..that
Spirit goes under and if oil prices stay the way the are and add a few more list…the young CFIs and RJ drivers are going to be CFI-ing and driving those CRJs for a lot longer
RexFiller@reddit
Flight training is essentially a pyramid scheme. One CFI would need to train roughly 10 other pilots to CPL/CFI to reach 1500 hours. Then those 10 CFIs need to train 10 more pilots each to hit 1500 hours.
We are now at the point 3 to 4 cycles after a pilot shortage so all the current CFIs are at the bottom of the "pyramid" along with thousands of other CFIs.
TravelerMSY@reddit
The feedback loop on training works but with a multi-year delay.
ALTSCAP_ALTS_ALT@reddit
This is the reason but reddit will have you believe it’s all influencers fault
Agreeable_Tutor5503@reddit
I'm younger so I wouldn't know but it's been a cyclical cycle since the earliest days from what I hear. A lot of people want to become pilots, once they finish their training a few years later, plenty of people are hired and they don't need new ones. People hear that, they don't want to be pilots, and then this is reflected a few years later when airlines want more and don't quite have enough. At least that's my uneducated theory lmao.
ltcterry@reddit
The supposed "pilot shortage." The supposed claim that you could make more money faster by becoming a pilot than by getting a degree. Greedy businesses telling people what they wanted to hear. Flight schools pretending they somehow had something to do with hiring airline pilots. The superficial, social media driven world we live in today.
InvertedWarrior@reddit
Shortest answer. The news. Back a few years ago there were a large number of retirements. Larger than the usual as some would say. So the news and other outlets are blowing up saying there is a massive pilot shortage. In turn a ton of people decided to become or try to become pilots either for the right or wrong reasons. Now there’s a surplus of pilots, even really good pilots who can’t land a job without a solid amount of time and a sweet resume. So it’s kinda bottlenecking. Hiring it about back to the normal from what I’ve heard at least at the airlines.
plicpriest@reddit
So I’ve been in aviation for a few decades now- you’re pretty spot on with your comment. This isn’t the worst aviation has been for hiring. However this is the phase I like to call “how bad do you really want it”. Lately I’ve seen lots of “I can’t get hired” posts. I feel that, and I’ve been there. So how bad do you really want this? For me, I was gonna stick it through, thick and thin, no matter what.
It’s starting to suck in the hiring world, but there is a plus side. In a few years my FOs and IOE students will be some real high caliber guys and gals. These will be the mature pilots that will know sacrifice, how to overcome challenges, who see the value of doing it right. They will be the pilots that seek wisdom, will seek knowledge and experience, and will truly be a treat to fly with.
If you are a pilot through and through- stick with it with tenacity. It will be worth it and you will truly be the best of the best!
Whisky-354@reddit
You ever seen a grandfather clock? The pendulum swings back and forth. And it'll swing back eventually.
SuperSaint77x@reddit
Because people are led to believe that there is such a thing as a “pilot shortage”.
HappyGnumff@reddit
