RIP Mr Mot - Ken Thorley

Ken Thorley, who played Mr Mot (The Best Barber in Starfleet) passed away last Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
I knew him as my best friend’s dad. He let our band practice in his garage all through high school, and he gave us something that, looking back, was a pretty p rare space to be loud, to create, and to feel like what we were doing mattered. He was encouraging and supportive. As you can imagine he was an amazing dad.
He had a really unique energy. He was funny, witty, sharp, patient and caring . When he talked to you, he truly listened. Even though I was a weird punky looking high school kid, he gave me the same respect and attention that he would give to an adult when he would speak to me. And his son and I were pretty strange kids.
A random fun memory that always pops into my head is that often he would come into the garage while we were practicing and say “I got an eviction notice for you boys…”, which is a line from his role as the bug guy from Men in Black. And I loved it.
As a Star Trek fan, it’s surreal knowing he was part of this universe. I didn't become a huge Star Trek nerd until years later. But more than anything, I’ll remember him as someone who gave us a place to be ourselves and to be creative. An adult that could goof off with us like kids but never talk down to us when we needed guidance. Good father, an amazing friend, a wonderful person and actor. And the best Barber in Starfleet.
Rest in peace, Ken. 🖖
Love ya

Ken was the best, he graduated high school with my parents and they remained close friends since then. We always had a great time when he was in town and we spoke on the phone periodically, he always treated me like I was one of his own kids. Calling Ken to let him know my father passed in 2023 was one of the hardest things I’d ever done and it hit me pretty hard when his son texted me to tell me he passed away.

I’m sorry for your loss. Sounds like you have a lot of awesome memories.

That's awesome. What a great tribute.
On another note, Trek could just cast people who have invested colloidal silver as Bolians, and save on the makeup budget. 🤔

i still have mine from working in the comic store 30 years ago, we'd joke it's just as valuable as a black lotus

Now there's a name I've not in a long time. A long time.

Lol, I have one as well. I have the comic with his face on it too. It's a DC comic so I guess you could say he's in the DC universe. Lol

Damn, I just watched a TNG episode last night that he was in.

There's a Good Knights Sleep sleepy podcast episode of the enterprise d call in late night radio show, and mott calls in to talk about how the captain always comes down and asks for the top to be even and the sides to be groomed and he can't figure out if he's messing with him or honestly doesn't know how bald he is

Funny thing. I wasn't a Star Trek fan when I was younger. And I knew Ken was an actor. I knew him in Men in Black.
I moved away to another state and lost contact for a while and decided to watch the original Star Trek series. Loved it. Moved on to the next generation and was like oh my God this is even better. I remember watching that episode going. Wait a minute... Is that? Holy crap! Ken?! Lol OMG

I have to say I love how a bald guy cuts a bald guy’s hair and it’s just so enjoyable we barely notice none of them have hair! Great portrayal Ken , and great tribute Ok-Whereas.

Not to be contrary, but the only source I can find online reguarding Mr. Thorley's passing is, well, this post. And alas, one thing life has tought me is to always find at least a second and possibly even a third source before believing such news when I read it online. (Even if the source should be credible! Freaking CNN of all places recently accidentally posting a memorial article for Michael J. Fox...)

Once an obituary hits someone will, probably, update wikipedia and Memory Alpha

If you search his name on Facebook you’ll see his family has made posts too.

So he not only acted opposite Sir Patrick Stewart, but he also had his character played by Sir Patrick Stewart (kind of) in “Starship Mine.”
Also, looking at his IMDb page, he was not only in Men in Black, but also in an episode of just about every show I can think of if you were to say, “name tv shows from the 90’s.” He was in NYPD Blue, Murphy Brown, Perfect Strangers, Saved by the Bell the New Class, Seinfeld, Grace Under Fire, Lois and Clark, Melrose Place, Buffy, 3rd Rock, Becker, Spin City, West Wing, and a ton of others

Thanks for sharing your memories. If there's ever regular Trek again, I hope that the Bolians get better developed.
Plus-Opportunity-538@reddit
There seemed to be a period of time in the TNG era where Bolians were the go to species for alien background extras. Its a shame there hasn't been a more developed Bolian regular because the look is distinctive and one of the more alien visuals while still allowing the actor to emote well. Unfortunately its hard to get non-Doug Jones actors to sit through that much makeup.
