I think this is corrosive to the soul. The proof is right in the text. He's lying about his wealth, lying about going to work every single day, an absolute scumbag to his gf, insecure that he's not working, believes he wouldn't be able to stand up to her reckless spending. If it doesn't all crash down, he will be living a lie one way or another.
Iceklimber@reddit
His gf pays equal to half the rent, which makes him evil?
caporalfourrier@reddit
It's a relationship built on a foundation of lies (the most egregious of which is making her pay rent unnecessarily) for which he is solely responsible and you see nothing wrong with it
Rather than lying his ass off he could simply ease here into the truth over time so you know he can build a relationship that lasts...
koollama@reddit
??? I didn't say evil. The house is paid off, he implies he's lying. So yeah, scummy. Much different than "hey I think it's fair if you pay rent for now since we're just gf/bf
What's 15 years? You're here too buddy. Do you have a last use date in mind?

If his girlfriend can't be trusted with this info because "she would try to spend it carelessly" then he's wasting his time with her.
Financial disagreements in a relationship is one of the biggest causes for breakups/divorce.
HitIerWasWrong@reddit
Yeah, disagreements, not lies by omission.
If he never lets on that he has money, there's no problem. I swear some people on here are so autistic.
Dronelisk@reddit
relationships are about compromise, and anon seems like the type of person not willing to make compromises with his gf, so he is the one ruining the relationship
BickedyBuckBumbl@reddit
What a weird presumption. What compromise is he not making? He has seen her spending habits and decided if he told her she would frivilously spend his money. Is the compromise that he should let her do this? What does he get in return for this compromise?
If anything he's saving the relationship by allowing her to maintain her financial independence and not financially rely on him, because once the money runs out she will most likely blame him for not being able to maintain that livestyle.
Dronelisk@reddit
he gets the relationship in exchange for that compromise
how is that so hard to understand?
BickedyBuckBumbl@reddit
I dont think you know what a compromise is. Each party has to give something up so they both mutually get a desired result. If he has to give his money up for a relationship with the girl what does she have to give up for a relationship with him? Otherwise it's not a compromise its a demand.

This is a prime opportunity to actually work a blue collar job. I'd love to be able to work a job while having a real safety net. Now's the time to be an apprentice, its worth it to gain a real skill.

Nah start business. Most startups can't pay their founder for 3-5 years. That's fine for this guy.

freedomfightre@reddit
a trade
electrician, plumbing, machine repair, tinsmith, welding, HVAC, etc.
borstenwrood@reddit
For all those jobs you need experience and or have taken classes. You can't just start working there lol
BigTerpFarms@reddit
I started doing HVAC with zero experience at 29. Started as a helper and worked my way up. You don't need any experience to start 99% of trades. They have apprenticeships for a reason.
freedomfightre@reddit
that's what apprenticeships are for, they literally pay you while they train you
and with all the boomers approaching retirement age, and all the millennials being gaslit into getting college education when a lot of them shouldn't have, there is a huge gap between demand for skilled workers and available skilled workers
I_dont_bone_goats@reddit
You can’t just walk into an apprenticeship with no training lol
Yes they train you more, but you don’t start at 0
conductorofpooptrane@reddit
Yes you can. I did and half of my class did.
Danstree@reddit
I did too. Walking in completely green and with a can do attitude is how you get an apprenticeship in the trades.
I_dont_bone_goats@reddit

conductorofpooptrane@reddit

Salty_Snorlax888@reddit
I dont think that you should be pressured by anyone to take one, if you are already financially independent. Many people litteraly work 80 hour weeks so they can retire early, so its gross that others (boomers and j*ws) think that jobs aren't just a means to an end, but the end goal itself.
Frenky_Fisher@reddit
Regarded re-take. Imagine being financaly stable and not use your extra free time to work different jobs and amass experience.

FawnGreyhound@reddit

FawnGreyhound@reddit
All of which is possible without a job requiring you to be at a at a certain place at a certain time, under some boss's boot.
Go do a carpentry course. Go volunteer at an animal sanctuary. Go be a beach bum in the sun and surf. Go ski down the mountains. Go learn to code your own website and blog. If I had enough that I don't need to work a job, the last thing I'd do is get a job.
Boring-Original-2968@reddit
What if you lose your riches? A fallback plan is a good idea. Hell, you might like it enough to do the work as a hobby.
the_marxman@reddit

Blue collar jobs are a lot of hard work and can fuck up your body. No one is working that unless they need the money. Except few people who have real passion for it.
OP would last 2 weeks until his boss says "yeah this weekend you're going to be lifting heavy shit and potentially injuring yourself, instead of fucking your gf and playing Mount and Blade... for money you don't need". Fuck that, no sane person wants that.

I was just watching a video on Instagram the other day of these two blue collar dudes were beefing with an uber driver. One of the blue collar guys basically says something like “yeah well you drive for Uber” - trying to put him down. Then the driver pulls up his bank account & he’s got like over 4 Mil in it. Shut him right up lmfao. Driver was rich & probably bored, so he said “fuck it” and just drove around.

It's great if the asset is appreciating at the same time that you're renting it out and earning income with it. If all you do is let it appreciate then it's not going to keep up with pretty much anything else. You would be better off with a 10-year T-bond and not worrying about something happening. it's $2 mil where I live. but most people wont be able to accrue that much wealth within a lifetime
Misenum@reddit
$2 million might be the threshold for a comfortable life, but if you live frugally you can get away with a 1/4 that or less. I had a period of my life not too long ago where I lived very well off of $10k a year. With a lifestyle like that, I could probably make it my whole life with only $100-200k saved up in an investment and never feel like I had to give anything up.
To your second point, just because most people won't accrue that much wealth within a lifetime doesn't mean that they can't. $100 invested each week in an ETF averaging 10% yearly returns is $1million in 30 years. Surely, most people can afford $100 a week,

That was enough for take care of a cat, go on vacations/visit family, buy video games, maintain my bike, etc. If I splurged on buying pc parts or going out with friends a few times a year, that barely added $1000-2000 a year and it was strictly unnecessary. Tuition was paid for by scholarship and my part time work earned 2-3X my expenses.

TheOxytocin@reddit
Mate not sure where you're getting that 10% yoy on an ETF, but if like to get in on it
Misenum@reddit
Any ETF that tracks the S&P500 has yielded a 10-11% annualized returns since its inception in 1957. Over the past decade, you got closer to 15%. Meanwhile the NASDAQ ETF, QQQ, yielded closer to 20% per year. If you instead bought the 3X leveraged TQQQ, your returns past 10 years is 2400%. Point is, you can buy any US ETF that tracks the broad market and make shit loads of money relatively risk free so long as you never touch your investments, especially during downturns.

Instead of blue collar, go for a fake white collar. "Consultant" is good, because it means nothing. "Computer Consultant" is better because it can mean everything and nothing, but justifies sitting behind one all day and night. But nothing that requires licensing.
pojohnny@reddit
very much respect for that story.

Am I weird in that I’d get a job anyways? For extra security and maybe insurance.
phreaminz@reddit
Smart money would buy a duplex, rent out the other side, and then act your like your also paying rent.
Paying rent when you have money to get a house is negative EV.
