What is a small Dallas quirk that lives rent-free in your head as a nuisance?

I'll go first: the Thanksgiving Square bells ring three minutes early.
Electrical-Treat475@reddit
Texas/OU weekend. You may as well just leave town for the week.
jamal_ramish@reddit
Street lights on many Dallas roads have two completely different arms… One side is original from decades ago, the other was bolted on later when the road expanded. The city just added onto the existing pole instead of replacing it. Once you see it you can’t unsee it.
Impossible-Try-9161@reddit
Sidewalks end abruptly when you most need them.
Independent_Lie_7324@reddit
Extremely short on-ramps to I35 in downtown Dallas. You better be ready to merge quick!
ReaderOfTheLostArt@reddit
The drive to Love Field from the DNT along Mockingbird Lane. Basically driving through a residential neighborhood until you get to Inwood.
ParsecAA@reddit
With lanes so narrow it constantly feels like someone is about to clip off your side mirror
txtrader@reddit
Always made my wonder why people bought / renovated homes on that stretch
Keep_Plano_Corporate@reddit
Still a Highland Park address till you hit Inwood I believe. Simple as that.

Greenway Parks. HPISD stops at the tollway.
BayonettaBasher@reddit
The weird exit numbering scheme on 75
SkyScreech@reddit
What do you mean
BayonettaBasher@reddit
They count up normally going north from downtown, but around 635 it randomly skips from 8 to like 20
playballer@reddit
20 years driving daily and never noticed lol
Such-Hold-7940@reddit
Makes me think they lost 8 miles when 635 was built.
JohnnyStarboard@reddit

pauliep13@reddit
Also, I’m pretty sure 75 is the only non-interstate highway around here that has numbered exits.
shrek-is-real@reddit
Also. It's a Non-Interstate interstate highway.

Thanksgiving Square is also a triangle
the_Modul0r@reddit
And the actual name is Thanks-Giving Square. Definitely a Dallas quirk that lives rent free in my head.
jape2116@reddit
Two things for me - The roads will sometimes just shift over like a lane. It feels like they wanted to avoid a rock instead of moving it.
- Street names changing back and forth and then sometimes back again
Coyomojo@reddit
The name changes are ridiculous!
Tejanisima@reddit
That second one can be really annoying, but for what it's worth, it's a function of various streets getting extended over the years until they ran into each other, at which point they didn't rename either of them. As a kid riding the schoolbus, I used to watch for that brief blip along Midway where it becomes Bluebonnet for just one block, before becoming Bluffview.
breonny@reddit
Some crosswalk signals time automatically with the traffic signal, while others require a press of a button. And these differences can occur just a block away from one another.
Can’t count many times I’ve had to help a tourist press a button as they’re expecting the walk signal to turn on automatically.
mynytemare@reddit
At Plano and Renner (Richardson), the NW corner of the intersection, crossing Plano has a button, crossing Renner is timed and there is no button to press at all. Same corner of the intersection. Def an annoying “quirk”
Jedi_Hog@reddit
Im not sure if this applies to this specific intersection on Renner however, sections of Renner Road are Richardson on one side of the street & Plano on the other side, which may be by the cause of the annoying quirk you speak of
vivalakellye@reddit
Only the north side of Renner between PGBT and Shiloh is Plano. The rest is Richardson. 🤷🏻♀️
Jedi_Hog@reddit
That sounds right based off the ticket I got from a Plano cop by the Methodist Hospital & thought he was out of his jurisdiction…I was wrong, as I find myself almost every time I disagree with a cop or my wife…
Altho I did successfully get my 2 latest tickets dismissed recently because the cop misspelled my name on the tickets, so the judge DISMISSED them fully!
It was funny tho bc I truly didn’t believe I deserved the tickets in the first place (I 100% stopped fully at the stop sign) & so I had all this evidence ready for court—High-Def photos in color, diagrams & drawings, etc—all neatly organized in my folder to plead my case!
After the judge dismissed them, I still wanted to plead my case bc I WAS innocent & spent a lot of time preparing. As I started pulling out the photos+ & reciting my planned defense, the judge stopped me & said,
“Mr. Jedi_Hog, stop! You won, & if you keep talking, there’s a high likelihood that you’ll talk yourself right back into 1 or both of those tickets based on what you say. Take the win, please.”
At that point, I shut the hell up & left w/out even having to pay court costs!
mynytemare@reddit
Yeah, that intersection is all Richardson but I am aware that it is the divide in some areas.
BeachStrandBiker@reddit
Something I've learned moving to Dallas from a more walkable city is that drivers here either aren't used to pedestrians walking or do not care.
It used to be I wait for the signal and just start walking. In Dallas I ALWAYS check over my shoulder at the car and then go. There have been so many scary instances where the car just turns on green. Sometimes it's not paying attention but many times they just DGAF.
GeeOh58@reddit
Crosswalks!!! The lights aren’t timed to keep the flow of traffic efficient. Hillcrest going north of LBJ is timed. I have found no others. I hate moving a block and having to stop again. I commute on a bicycle and can watch the entire platoon of moving traffic get stopped only to be released and then the cross street platoon gets stopped. Time. The. Lights.
xinxs@reddit
They're almost all timed to be fast in Dallas. You're probably just driving when theres so much traffic that the system fails. There are people whose job it is to time the lights. Outside of dallas, I have ran into streets that purposely make you stop at every light no matter what, as a way to keep people on the highway instead of cutting through the city.
FataOne@reddit
The intersection outside my office must be on some sort of timer, because, depending on when I get to/leave my office, sometimes it's automatic and sometimes it requires a button.
breonny@reddit
I have encountered such mischief.
As a general rule, I push the button even if I think it will change on its own. Because you just never know.
No_You_4833@reddit
As a tourist visiting Dallas many times and I just give up and go with the lights. I feel you.
Atemiswolf@reddit
This irks me as well!
EarlDooku@reddit
There's no semblance of any sort of effort whatsoever to optimize traffic flow.
We have the worst urban planners/optimizers in the United States of America, possibly the whole planet. I sit at traffic light A, first in line, rotting away for two minutes while not a single car crosses in front of me in the intersection. When I finally get a green light, I go immediately, drive five over the speed limit, and boom: another red, which I barely missed by about 10 seconds. Lather, rinse, repeat for the entire soul-crushing commute.
If my actual career goal was "Maximize Public Misery," I still wouldn't be this effective. It’s a masterpiece of incompetence. Whoever is "syncing" these lights has the most iron-clad job security in the State of Texas because they are clearly untouchable in their absolute refusal to exert even a modicum of effort at their job.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Someone spends lots of time driving down Preston I see...even at 11:00 at night, the side streets change to red with no-one there, just to slow the road down. IMO I think they do it on purpose, to keep Dallas' oversized arterials from being raceways when traffic is light. Those streets are designed for 70+ mph traffic, with 40mph speed limits.
EarlDooku@reddit
Yes, I'm specifically calling out Preston and Northwest highway.
dankjudydench@reddit
Dallas does not zipper merge and it spiritually depletes me every time I leave the house
Tejanisima@reddit
The wild thing about that fact is that when I first started driving back in the 1980s, the zipper merge was one of the things that was fantastic about Dallas drivers. It it was like watching a live-action version of the films that used to show us for our simulator practice in drivers' ed. I don't know what went wrong.
GeeOh58@reddit
This.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Oh yeah, my favorites are when the city embarks on a multi-year construction project and just never bothers to re-program the traffic signals. The off-ramp from northbound 35 to Riverfront Boulevard is atrocious for this right now. Have filed multiple 3-1-1 tickets to varying degrees of resolution. Sometimes it seems like they've set them properly, other times you'd think it was programmed for traffic in 1981.
Or the construction on Houston Street in front of EBJ Union Station. "Yeah, let's close a bunch of the travel lanes to force traffic into one lane, but let's also make sure to not change the traffic signals, ensuring massive gridlock occurs where it was fine before we started tearing up the road for no reason."
This sort of statement could ONLY be uttered by the clinically insane or the Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works.
Wafflesnobbert@reddit
Going out of your way to avoid the intersection of Greenville and Lovers during afternoon rush hour.

hodor137@reddit
The whole thing of calling it that is stupid to me
hzme@reddit
The tragedy of 635 onramps between Preston and 75 in both directions, short ramps while losing lanes is insane to me especially since it was all instantly problematic the day 635 reopened, WTF
muskratboy@reddit
Slow traffic all day, every day.
CrookedFinger@reddit
The intersection at Garland/Gaston/East Grand has been living rent free in my head since they “recently” finished rebuilding it. Worst intersection, signaling and signage.
muskratboy@reddit
The red light / green light progression makes absolutely no sense.
And don’t get me started on how the weird twist they’ve put in it makes cars constantly cross lanes as they turn. There needs to be another line showing them the angle to take, because you’ve got to go WAY out and around to hit that kink properly.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
It’s worse than it was previously. I have to drive through it every day, going from Garland Rd to E Grand.
I have yet to go through that intersection without someone turning towards E Grand when they are supposed to be going towards Gaston.
Only two lanes turn!
Also, there is consistently someone in the far left lane that is turning that tries to turn into the far right lane on E Grand cutting everyone in the secondary turn lane off.
It’s terrible.
BrittleBonesJones@reddit
Can we turn right on red going from Garland to Gaston? I drive here every day and still have no idea.
foppishmanabouttown@reddit
No way. They totally fixed it!
RepulsiveInterview44@reddit
I see this intersection and raise you the Garland/Shiloh/McCree intersection. They “improved” it in….’22 maybe and I think to myself, WHERES THE IMPROVEMENT?!
KelleyElsie@reddit
That intersection has always been a clusterf*ck. Recent “improvements” have not changed that.
Chasqui@reddit
Meh. Still bad, but better than before. There are now meeting to discuss a turn signal on at the light on Gaston to get into / out of the shopping centers.
johnnyclash42@reddit
Not sure if it's this way anymore, but throughout the 90's and early 2000's, people drank Tuaca shots like it was going out of style. Straight Teach or also there was a shot called Tuaca Lemmondrop that was everywhere too. Never understood the allure of drinking chilled shots of liqueur that tastes like licorice, but I was absolutely in the minority at the time.
muskratboy@reddit
Let’s just order a round of flaming dr. peppers and be done with it.
Stink3rK1ss@reddit
Sounds way better than Fernet or Malort!
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
Maybe a hot take, lol, but I would take Malort or Fernet over Rumpleminze any day.
Stink3rK1ss@reddit
Oof, I can’t do any of them these days, but I’d go rumple before the other two. For novelty’s sake, I’m also not opposed to a shot of Goldschläger for the novelty of ingesting gold. But just one.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
Oh man, I haven’t thought about Tuaca in ages. But yeah, as a bartender during that time, Tuaca Lemon Drops and Jaegerbombs were the IT shot.
dickhall65@reddit
Jaegerbombs aren't cool anymore?!?
TeaKingMac@reddit
One of my first bar experiences was ordering
10 Jager bombs!
For the table, and then no one else drank any, so I polished off 6 of them before hitting the floor
coltonmusic15@reddit
I don't even tell this as a joke but like as my reality throughout life so far as someone who enjoys a drink and used to have fun back in high school drinking with the buds - I've never had a jager bomb in my life and not blacked out later on that same night. Something about that redbull and liquor combo just takes me off to a place where I never intend to be when the jager bomb is consumed. Thus - I've not had a jager bomb in like 12 or 13 years.
brenddur@reddit
My dad went with my brother out to a bar after a concert a few years ago. Dad asked the bartender to make him something since they didn't have whatever he wanted. They gave this man in his SIXTIES whose HAD cardiac issues a jager bomb!!! Thank god my brother realized it after my dad only had one 😅 he'd never had an energy drink and didn't think to ask because liquor + energy drinks "would be nuts". Yes, yes it would certainly be nuts, Pops. Not that I know from experience.. of course not.
TeaKingMac@reddit
O same. Mine's almost 20 years at this point.
Around 10 or so ago, my wife told me I wasn't allowed to have red bull while drinking anymore.
Now after 3 or 4 drinks, I just fall asleep, instead of having another 3 or 4 drinks
DumbBitchByLeaps@reddit
I feel like the person who created jager bombs hated themselves
savannah31401@reddit
I hated making lemon drops, because I would be stinky the rest of the shift.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
Oy vei Tuaca lol.. same, haven't thought about it in a minute
KelleyElsie@reddit
Yes, I drank a lot of Tuaca lemon drops in the late 90s/early aughts. They were tasty. But I don’t remember Tuaca tasting like licorice? I haaaate licorice.
springbluebell1@reddit
I tried tuaca for the first time recently… I also hate licorice. It did not taste like licorice to me; it was more of a sweet vanilla flavor.
qolace@reddit
Yeah I'm the same! Tuaca was delicious and definitely didn't have a licorice flavor yuck
KelleyElsie@reddit
Sambuca and Jaeger were the licorice shots. Shudder I wasn’t necessarily ordering Tuaca lemon drops for the flavor, but def don’t remember any licorice. Not that I have super sharp memories of those days! 🫠
johnnyclash42@reddit
Yeah I blended Tuaca and sambuca in my mind.
johnnyclash42@reddit
Shout out to Mick’s bar and all the good music that was played there. I saw Tom sell sooooo many Tuaca Lemondrops.
johnnyclash42@reddit
I think I combined my memories of Tuaca and Sambuca into one final boss of sweet shots.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I don’t even recall what it tasted like, and I’m totally ok with that hahaha
bkharmony@reddit
You can thank The Boys Named Sue for that.
jennifaerie16@reddit
I recall Elvis T. and The Busboys making this a tradition in the 90s.
aqua_nettt@reddit
We had a machine that you flipped bottles of Tuaca in that chilled the shots up until a few years ago. Used to have tons of Tuaca drinkers, but most have finally switched to something with less sugar.

The streets in downtown are built on two conflicting and intersecting grids. An architectural student pointed out this to me and now I can’t not notice it. I don’t know how I didn’t notice it before but when I look at a map, it makes no sense.
brenddur@reddit
... dangit. This explains a lot. But also will never unsee it now!
captaingreencap@reddit
Only about .03 percent of the drivers here know how to parallel park worth a damn. That rearview camera in your big-ass SUV ain’t helping you.
brenddur@reddit
I didn't parallel park for over 10 years in the Dallas area (license/driving test at 15-16 until I was in my late 20s). There was always "enough" space or a lot/garage. And when I did again, I wasn't even in Texas! Now I will parallel park wherever. One place I've lived (Pittsburgh) has a parallel parking championship now, I think 5th or 6th year in a row. I find this simultaneously hilarious, entertaining, and absolutely strange. I love it. I see people post photos/videos on socials afterwards 😂
Tejanisima@reddit
My then-husband used to say people shouldn't be allowed to buy a Yukon, Suburban, etc., until they had passed a special driving test just for those vehicles, including proper parking and turning without swinging wide as if they were an 18 wheeler.
FreakingEthan@reddit
You know, I used to live downtown next to Thanksgiving square and I was also extremely annoyed by the timing being off. So hey, give it a shot.

they need to synchronize it to a real reference like Internet NTP time server, GPS receiver, etc. If the tech is not smart enough for that, then they should at least set it several times a year, b/c it is going to drift.

People “pull in” when parking on curl-de-sacs, like a it’s a parking lot. Instead of parking along the curb like any other street. I’ve seen this nowhere else and it’s insane to look at. Why would you do this?
VastAbalone959@reddit
Insane to look at? Lol low tolerance much? Can simply fit more cars in this way. Depends on the size or layout of the cul-de-sac too
mPisi@reddit
Increases the number of parking spaces at the cost of maneuvering room.
Use of this does vary by neighborhood and even by street. I think it's kind of neat how the neighbors can decide how to use that space(1) harmoniously, probably without discussing it.
1 - Obligated to point out it is public space(2), not the property of any specific house or neighborhood. But public space can have social norms.
2 - Unless a private street

How Google thinks it's somehow ok to recommend a person to quickly change 4 lanes and then immediately cross a 3 lane service road right off the exit (driving 75N and then taking the spring valley exit and going onto prestonwood drive). The 0-1 minutes it saves is not worth the stress, especially at night or other low traffic situations (high traffic actually makes the maneuver easier as cars are more willing to slow down and negotiate trading spaces with you), and if you mess up it'll cost you more time than it would save just going another route.
I've tried to recommend google not suggest that route by default and it's a toss up whether or not it does.

The Dallas Marathon route. How the Race Committee sacrifices the pure, otherwise-enjoyable running experience for high-wealth neighborhood jaunts that make the runners climb ridiculous, completely unnecessary hills, only to reverse and run downhill to the point their knees are injured, then lap a 10-mile freezing cold (but pretty!) windy December lake. Worst. Race. Course. Ever!

Calling SMU "the hilltop" when it's barely a mound or even a knoll
cheese-and-febreeze@reddit
Funny enough, the knoll that used to be the student section at football games got plowed over for a new athletic center. I think we all know the real implication of that moniker though.

The outside lanes on Ross
thisonelife83@reddit
Some lanes on the highway just end. No arrows, no words on the road saying merge right, no signs, the lane just disappears.

The combination of one-way and two-way streets in downtown is haphazard and makes no sense half the time.
Visible_Analysis9068@reddit
if you’re coming down 30 east into Dallas, there’s a certain stretch of highway around the cockrell hill shopping center where in the morning, the sun reflects so hard off the slanted roof of the AMLI that it blind the fuck out of anyone staring at the skyline from there

The little Texas flag stickers (magnets?) that used to be on the back of every BMW in Dallas.

This brings to mind John Prine’s “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore.”
