What were the rules you played with in Kerby?

Honestly I use to love a good game of Kerby, but not had the time or found the people to play with! Was talking with a mate via discord, and we were talking about the different rules we had when we played Kerby! I’d love to know what rules you had growing up!

Just make sure the scousers win 😁😁

It only occurred to me yesterday that kids can't really play it anymore.
I can't think of any streets in my whole town where there's not cars parked everywhere down the street and you wouldn't be stopping every 10 seconds for a passing car.
Crazy how much things have changed in 30 years!

So should we build Kerby Courts? Just fake roads with pavements?

1 point then go in the middle, 1 point for each shot hit from the middle until you miss. After missing, there was then a 'dodgeball' rule where if the person gets hit with the ball before they get back to their path then they lost all the points they'd just accumulated in the middle (can't remember if you stole those points or not).
We ended up with tons of 'special points' rules. 5 or 10 points for an backwards overhead shot. More points if you threw it between your legs. Throw it up and head it would be quite a lot too. Kicking it was worth a few due to it being quite inaccurate. TBH it was usually bettter to just throw it normally and rack up points in the middle.

This reminds me of the threads you see where someone says "what's something you saw happen but no one would ever believe you?"
Weird memory to bubble to the surface but once I threw an over car shot, got the kerby and because it had a fair bit of height to it, it bounced off that kerb, came back to mine and got a kerby on mine too.
We had no idea how to score it, is that a kerby "own goal" or... Wtf is that?
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
We had the rule of double Kerby so if the ball hits both kerbs without touching the floor it’s a double Kerby and an auto win! If it hits both kerbs and rolls back to you it’s just a standard Kerby

Minus 20 points if the ball went in Mrs Hazel’s garden and whoever threw it was getting it and facing her wrath.

Curby?
PennyBunPudding@reddit
Looks like someone has been Americanised.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
Aye Kerby!
HungJames28@reddit
If you hit the kerb and it bounced back and you hit your own kerb - automatical win
If you get a kerby you get a second go, taken from half way. If your opponent catches the ball and hits you with it before you get back to your kerb, they steal your points
RiverGlittering@reddit
Throw ball at kerb. If it bounces back half way across the road, you score. Catch the ball, you throw again. Throw the ball into the garden of the guy that keeps stabbing the balls, you get punched in the dick.
Rolling balls don't count, obviously. Has to be a clean bounce back.
I never considered that these games would have different rules between players, but of course they would. Only people to talk to about it lived on my street.
iffyClyro@reddit
The curb?
RiverGlittering@reddit
If you're American, then yes the curb.
In British English, Kerb is the noun and curb is the verb. You curb your enthusiasm, and sprain an ankle on a kerb.
iffyClyro@reddit
Nah mate, it’s always been referred to as a curb up hear in Scotland and it’s ways been called curby not kerby.
RiverGlittering@reddit
That... Doesn't change the fact it's a kerb in British English.
With Americanisation seeping into everything, curb would be just fine too. Only pedants are going to correct someone on it.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
Ball in the garden rule was weird if you threw it and it landed you hand to get it but if you threw it and your opponent failed to catch it they had to grab it!
RiverGlittering@reddit
We didn't really have a way of handling it. You'd argue they threw the ball, they'd argue it touched you last.
I think we just liked punching dick to be honest.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
Yeah I mean you could always pull out the “it’s my ball so I said to get it” card
Spontanudity@reddit
1 point if you hit the kerb and it rolled back. 2 if it bounced off the kerb and you caught it in the air. 4 If you threw it behind yourself and it rolled back to you. 8 if you threw it behind you and caught the bounce.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
Interesting we use to play first to 500!
Threw the ball and hit the kerb you got 10 points, then you’d walk to the middle and throw! If you caught it it was 10 points but if it rolled to you it was only 5!
Spontanudity@reddit
Ahh we played to 50. We didn't do the walk to the middle rule but I did play with our arch nemesises in the road next to ours that did that.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
To me the walk to the middle is part of the game!
Spontanudity@reddit
I think that was definitely more common. We grew up on a busy road so walking into the middle was risky.
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
But that’s the thrill having to shout “CAAAR” or crawling under a car or van knowing you could get your legs crushed!
miggleb@reddit
10 points from other side.
Then you'd go centre
5 points from centre
20 points if you hit them as the run back from centre
Your turn if the ball is on your side of the road
50 points for over car shots
Advanced-Night-9028@reddit (OP)
Ooo very interesting we had a similar if the ball went onto your opponent’s kerb while throwing you had to run back to you kerb, if they hit you, they took all of your points
