You seem like the guy to ask then: I had a 92FS for my first handgun and hated it. The trigger was awful. If I wanted to give the 92 another try, any recommendations on a model to look for?

If it's the DA pull then you can remedy that with a 16# hammer spring which still gives the same 100% reliability that the heavy 20# does, and there are new trigger bar designs that give you a crisper trigger reset.
Any of the 92X variants come stock with this, as well as the slimmer 1911 style grips and enlarged magazine release. Or if you want similar controls with something more compact you can go with the PX4.

If you remove the magazine safety it'll run like a charm with SW 5906 mags, which are much more available than 30M magazines.

I think I’ve worked out how to keep the magazine safety with the 5906 magazines. They need a bit of grinding anyway to fit comfortably around the trigger bar, I plan to weld a blob of metal on in the spot where the stamped engagement tab is and grind it to shape.

Not as good as the old days, sure. But this decade has been pretty fuckin sweet. Norinco SKS's returned from Albania, Type 54s, Carcanos, Beretta 84, Beretta 1934, Zastava M83, Star 30M, Czech revolvers, Vz50/70, Skorpion parts kits, Swiss rifles, those Century CA3's made from portuguese G3s that PTR built.

bought one of these last month too, great condition. These things have very nice triggers with both the DA pull and the reset, very crisp. It's like an alternate to a CZ75 with the slide in frame, its only quirk is even for an all steel pistol these guys are HEAVY

Ordered one, it was in very good condition. Mags really did match, not that that matters. Mine came with the original box and tool kit and a cute little Star 30M morale patch. It's heavy but not Jericho heavy. Reminds me of a CZ-75, Beretta and Hi-power all in one.
This is the best value in a surplus pistol on the market.... assuming it shoots well. I will find out this weekend.

I’m looking for a few good 9mm pistols to build a self defense base at the house to practice and get the rest of my family involved and trained on.
I’ve got a few different hunting rifles and whatnot and an m36, so I don’t really have what I’d like this product to fill.

It's old tech. You can't put a light on it, you can't put night sights on it. You can run extended 5906 mags. It's heavy and the manual of arms is sorta strange (how do you decock it? Pull the trigger with the safety on!).
That said, mine is super reliable, it's just not something I'd keep around unless I had a flashlight in the drawer next to it. It's a range toy and a curio.

You can use Mec-gar S&W 5900 series mags, they make 10 rounders. You will have to remove the magazine disconnect safety and potentially do some dremeling on the mags though. The Mec-gar 15 and 20’s work fine out of the box but the geometry is different on the 17 rounders and interferes just slightly with the trigger bar, which it looks like the 10 rounders share.

I bought a VG model from a drop shipper (graded by Century) and was disappointed in the condition. Heavy holster wear and the front sight appeared to have been filed down. Despite what appears to be heavy use, it shoots great. Super smooth and light recoiling. It was also very easy to shoot accurately. I have another G graded model on its way to me now. Found it on Armslist, and despite the lower grade, the pictures show a much cleaner pistol. Long story short: great shooting pistols for the money, but bit of a crap shoot with the grade from my experience. If I could get a guaranteed LNIB one, I would.
