5080 vs 4090

I have a choice between a used 5080 FE for $1100 or getting a used 4090 FE for $1500. Which route would you go? I like how the 5080 has newer tech and less likely for maintenance in the future, where the 4090 is 2-3 years old now would maybe have older paste and pads that might need to be replaced but is more powerful and more VRAM.
Which one would you go for?

What about warranty? Personally, i’d take the 5080 long term.

Unfortunately, both cards are used founders edition so no transferable warranty.

Whats a new 5080 AIB run in your area?

Cheapest PNY 5080 here at my best but is $1,290 before tax

Given how likely they are to melt their power connectors, get a new one with warranty. I'd never buy any PC component used without warranty for more than 50% of its retail price.

I would personally spend the extra money on a new 5080 with warranty. 4090 is a beast but 5080 overlooked is almost as good. I can't see spending so much money for something with no warranty when you can spend 10% more and get one.

I’d buy that. But if you are really bent on the two listed, get the 5080.

If neither have a warranty Id get the 4090

In which country is this legal?

having owned both a 4090 FE and several different 5080s.... go for the 5080, when you OC/UV it's essentially a 4090 in games with just less VRAM which I NEVER had any issues with. Some games my 5080 performed better... and you can also enable 4x frame gen if needed, which you can't do on the 4090

That is true, disregarding the effect FG on the industry of how game developers will optimize their games, I feel like FG will become really efficient and will have latency not too far off from native FPS latency with time. Much like how we viewed DLSS back then.

Just to set your expectations, the way that Frame Generation is currently implemented, there is no way dramatically reduce latency. FG generates two frames, holds on to the second one, then inserts AI generated frames in between. Only after those AI frames have been generated and displayed does the GPU then display the next real frame. So, you're always working one frame behind.

Old take. Reflex is pretty fucking awesome. MFG with Reflex is better than just running native at this point.

Reflex works regardless of whether your using frame generation. FG still fundamentally adds latency. Reflex simply makes the base latency as low as possible before FG makes it worse.

I've got to about 95% Vram usage in VR only, but it never was an issue. I was able to play with everything cranked and was just at the line, but so far loving the 5080.

4090 have better performance so i'd go with it but it's juste me.
Vortrexion@reddit
I’d take the 4090, sell it for 2k+, then buy my 5080 😂
busboy7@reddit (OP)
Would a 4090 actually sell that quick anywhere over $2k?
Vortrexion@reddit
People bulk buying those 4090’s for 2.2-2.4k as long as you find someone trustworthy. I sold mine back in December for 2.2k locally. Basically a free 6-700 for you to just keep or spend on better parts.

Yeah just look at r/hardwareswap for reference

For what purpose?
busboy7@reddit (OP)
Very much for gaming
Tequilazu@reddit
Definitely 5080, huge advantage for me is less power (= less heat) needed when undervolted. Can easily be overclocked too if needed.

The one that I would go for is the 4090. Extra VRAM, as well as raw power, will always beat added functionality. Repasting is simple and inexpensive if needed, and it’s a better deal for only 400 dollars more.

I think you should go with a new 4080 buying a used high end graphics card is so risky if you want to be safe buy the rtx 4080
busboy7@reddit (OP)
You can't find a new 4080 nowadays. If you did they would be priced way higher than they were MSRP.
Leather-Werewolf-534@reddit
Buy the used 5080
Wlcm2ThPwrStoneWrld@reddit
You likely aren't doing anything where the 4090 would make more sense. If this is for gaming, just buy the 5080.
busboy7@reddit (OP)
True
9okm@reddit
For gaming, 5080.
No_Spare1827@reddit
Well the 5080 is a solid card but if u can get the 4090 with a guarantee that it works then I would go 4090 for sure
