So umm...
When did Russia declare war on the UK? Like what the heck did I miss such that this seems like a complete bolt from the blue?
I know that Russia and the UK are on opposite sides of the Ukraine War, but that didn't mean that actual hostile actions (other than the usual spying and such) were breaking out between the two country?
When did all this happen?
Professional-Syrup-0@reddit
Don’t know if it’s sad or funny people are still seriously asking for declarations of war.
If we are going by those then the US hasn’t been at war since WWII, surely you don’t seriously believe that, so you?
imunfair@reddit
Ukraine's long-range drone attacks have been escalating both in quantity and range, and Russia isn't happy about it since the drones are made in the EU. If they were made in Ukraine they'd just strike the manufacturing facilities, but the NATO shield makes it hard for them to get at Ukraine's supply lines.
baddymcbadface@reddit
Russia is also at war with Canada, did no one tell you? They're actively fighting all of NATO.
wet_suit_one@reddit
The only threats to Canada I've been hearing are coming out of the White House. I know that Russia is hostile to NATO and it's members, but I've not heard of direct threats to Canada from Russia.
sakezaf123@reddit
I think what you've missed, is that russia regularly does shit like this. Pro-govt media regularly airs segments about how Putin should nuke London, and how many brits that would kill (painted as a positive). There is this weird, extremely popular conspiracy theory in russia, that the govt like to stoke, that paints the british royal family, as some sort of masterminds, that secretly control all the west. And they talk about this shit on their fucking talk shows. Most people in the west just rarely get to see it, because to journalists, it's not really considered newsworthy, and more as lowest hanging fruit, as it's so common.
But that's just the russian propaganda, we also shouldn't ignore the actual hybrid warfarfare russia has engaged in vs EU countries, stuff like cutting undersea telecom cables, sabotaging railroads and transformation stations. That last one has been especially common in the past few years. As they also regularly target transformers in Ukraine, and there is a global shortage currently, so they're trying to make sure that western powers also can't supply ukrainians.
Multibuff@reddit
Last time I remember was September 15th last year. To quote Peskov “NATO is at war with Russia. This is obvious and requires no further proof”. No room for debate here. The funniest thing, though, is that Medvedev made a statement the very same day that a no-fly zone in Ukraine would mean war between Russia and NATO. You can’t make this shit up!
BeardySam@reddit
Declare war? What Russia says or legally decides is almost meaningless, it’s what it does that need to be looked at. Russia is in a state of quasi war with most of Europe and has been for some time, but it skirts around the edges of anything that will be higher types of aggression that might trigger a response.
Moikanyoloko@reddit
If it happens, it would be a pretty big escalation.
Regardless of what some might say about Ukraine doing the same, Ukraine benefits from the war escaling and involving other countries, Russia doesn't AFAIK.
As long as it doesn't happen, its just an random threat.
Old_Wallaby_7461@reddit
It's a sign of desperation. The situation at the front is "developing not to their advantage" as the Japanese once said
Professional-Syrup-0@reddit
Medvedev has been making these kinds of declarations for the past 4 years, this article is literally based on a Tweet of his.
As such the biggest sign we have here is that LBC needed a sensationalist headline implying Russia is about to attack the UK, for the many clicks and outrage, not any actual change in Russian foreign policy.
Aka this is non-news
Able-Swing-6415@reddit
It's dimitry Medvedev. Whoever published this story is even drunker than he is
loggy_sci@reddit
Oh I forgot when it comes to Russia we’re all just supposed to laugh when one of their ministers says something threatening. FOH
Professional-Syrup-0@reddit
Unlike when the American “minister of war” literally declares how “no quarter” should be given because he heard that line in a movie before and it sounded cool.
Just too bad when somebody in his position declares something like that it could very easily be interpreted as an order to commit war crimes, which where then promptly committed by the US military.
TimeIntern957@reddit
Well, German foreign minister once claimed that we are in war with Russia so...
loggy_sci@reddit
Russia claims it is at war with the entire collective ‘west’ because western nations support Ukraine defending itself from Russian aggression.
TimeIntern957@reddit
They are not completely wrong then ?
Multibuff@reddit
In any other country that man would’ve lost his job or been jailed years ago for saying shit like that publicly
imunfair@reddit
His job is to say uncomfortable things that are a bit too brazen for a measured leader to say. It's the loud nationalistic voice to compliment Putin's calm reassurance. Carrot and stick if you will.
TheUnicornRevolution@reddit
Are you suuuuuure about that these days?
kwonza@reddit
It won’t Putin has no balls.
re_carn@reddit
That’s exactly right. The “little victorious war” has spiraled out of control, and he can neither end it with the current outcome nor escalate it - in either case, he’s finished. So he has no choice but to keep going, however he can.
Eziekel13@reddit
What if it’s a distraction/feint?
As we discovered in the 90’s, when there’s a war in Europe…the west doesn’t have enough bandwidth for the rest of the world…
re_carn@reddit
What difference does it make? Putin is a traitor either way, regardless of whether he started the war out of selfishness, madness, or an agreement with some external powers.
alienassasin3@reddit
A traitor to who?
re_carn@reddit
What do you call someone who destroys a country’s economy, sends hundreds of thousands of people to their deaths, and severs all foreign ties—all for their own interests? A traitor. A traitor to Russia, if you want a straight answer.
Vast_Tea9577@reddit
So zelensky is a traitor too now?
milton117@reddit (OP)
I didn't realise Zelensky invaded Russia in 2022.
Eziekel13@reddit
If it’s a distraction…then we would have to look at what they’re doing in the rest of the world…
Which seems to be commodity based bilateral military agreements…Security for Minerals, similar to China’s Belt and Road, but instead of incredible debt, a presidential guard supplied by Russia…
They aren’t angling for number one, China is inevitable….they are angling to be number two in the world and China’s biggest trading partner.
kwonza@reddit
Well he decided the best way to move forward is to cut off all internet in Russia, people are fucking pissed
loggy_sci@reddit
Average Russian mad that Putin isn’t murdering more Ukrainians
JConRed@reddit
But he's got donnies balls... Don't they count?
UBC145@reddit
Understatement of the year right there
ZippyDan@reddit
A relative few number of countries do.
The vast majority of countries just want peace and economic prosperity and don't threaten the use of force or violence willy-nilly in an attempt to get what they want.
Moikanyoloko@reddit
Fair, should've been "countries like Russia".
turbotank183@reddit
Not going to happen, just an empty threat to look strong.
Look how his 2 week operation is going already, bringing the UK, and therefore NATO, into this would be suicide for Russia at this point
imunfair@reddit
It's not an empty threat, it's a warning. Russia has this habit of warning dozens of times before they do something, and by the time they actually do it no one thinks they will because they've warned the target to back off so many times prior to action.
This is the start of one of those warning cycles - pointing out the escalating involvement of EU nations in their war, and how displeased they are about it, and hinting there could be consequences if you guys don't back off.
If the US actually did back out of NATO you'd probably see Russia escalate the threats more quickly, since the EU is not a conventional threat to Russia, so the only gamble is how far they can threaten your involvement before the nukes come out. Game theory on whether you're so committed to Ukraine that you'll put your own lives on the line, or back off when the stakes are real and not just a proxy war with you feeding free weapons to their enemy.
lucian1900@reddit
As a Brit, I think the Russians have a point. We are complicit in many wars: Ukraine, Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, etc.
We should stop hosting US aggression or sell weapons to their other vassals.
GianfrancoZoey@reddit
It is the whole point of our state's existence in the modern day - a military base with a rentier economy attached.
As America gets more and more unstable we're going to increase our level of servitude which means more cuts to help pay for their wars
milton117@reddit (OP)
What war are we in right now?
milton117@reddit (OP)
How much are they paying you?
lucian1900@reddit
Why Is it so hard to believe Brits might have this opinion?
Just look at Stop the War: a big membership organisation against the UK‘s involvement in all war.
milton117@reddit (OP)
The organisation that takes russian money? That one?
lucian1900@reddit
StW has most of its funds from membership fees. I’d know that, as a paying member.
If you were in the UK, you’d know that “bipartisan” is a nonsensical term here.
milton117@reddit (OP)
You're gullible, then
sakezaf123@reddit
As a russian I think you're wrong, and Puting should capitulate to the LGBT agenda he claims to fight so often without winning, and be a bottom to Keir Starmer. Oh wait, out of the two of us, only one is russian, and it's not me.
Shane-8300@reddit
So I've recently been informed that supplying weapons to your proxy means you are considered a legitimate target and can be struck in self defense.
MoltenCopperEnema@reddit
Do we think the reason Russia hasn't attacked other countries is because of their deep respect for international law?
Or is it because they are already struggling fighting one country and directly engaging any others would mean a quick end for Russia?
vastle12@reddit
Like the west gives a damn about international law after Gaza and now Iran
Live_Emergency_736@reddit
what argument are you exactly trying to make here - that attacks can be justified based on what we THINK a nation might do and hasn't even done yet or "NATION X WOULD TOTALLY DO THIS IF IT WERENT FOR HYPOTHETICAL X!"?
because in that case congratulations you just owned yourself and justified russias invasion of ukraine via preventive warfare that you are advocating for lol
MoltenCopperEnema@reddit
No lol that's not my argument. Not sure where you got all that.
The person I replied to was arguing that, if we applied the same standards everywhere, Russia would be justified in attacking other European countries because they are supplying Ukraine with weapons, which makes them part of the hostilities. This is correct. It's why Israel is justified in attacking Iran for supplying hamas and hezbollah, and it's why Iran is justified in attacking other Gulf countries that are helping the US attack Iran.
My point was that the reason Russia hasn't attacked Poland or the UK is not because intl law forbids it. Russia doesn't give a shit about the law. The real reason is more practical: the Russians know that if any other country got directly involved in the war, the entire Russian army would be pushed back all the way to Moscow before the end of the month.
TimeIntern957@reddit
Our boys would be home by christmas right ? I think I heard something like this before.
NatureTrailToHell3D@reddit
Within reason. For example, killing tens of thousands of civilians, families, children, causing humanitarian crises, should also be avoided. Especially if it is exceptionally disproportionate to the actual threat that is being protected from.
random_handle_123@reddit
That profile pic lol
Lapkonium@reddit
Typical yellow journalism. Most countries have lists of potential targets in case of war.
Future-Excuse6167@reddit
Russia has a right to defend itself.
dwair@reddit
From whom? The UK hasn't invaded Russia.
The UK has had to put up with Russia murdering people in the UK and continuous political interference for the last 20 years so it's Putin who has set the president since the start of his dictatorship.
doctazeus@reddit
They could defend themselves by getting out of Ukraine.
Future-Excuse6167@reddit
Big if true.
dukeofnes@reddit
"Other locations on the potential hit list where drones are allegedly being manufactured are in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Israel and Turkey."
Fearless-Feature-830@reddit
Whew I’m safe
Rincewindcl@reddit
Whilst they are fielding donkeys and Cold War tanks on the battlefield, I have little faith in their ability to wage war. Get fucked Putin, you little man.
Dahak17@reddit
Even in it’s current state the UK could maintain enough of a distant blockade against Russia to cause massive issues, even just cutting off shipping leaving the Baltic, north, and Black Sea’s would be a massive blow to the Russian economy.
