Midlife crisis, but make it Xennial

Is it just me, or is becoming a dj the new corvette?
I’ve been leaning in to reality tv in my 40s to cope. I can think of two reality stars off the top of my head who’ve done it. Meredith Marks and Kyle from summer house, for example.
I think about this more than anyone should.
That’s all.
szogrom@reddit
You're perfect, yes, it's true
bitwarrior80@reddit
I built a retro-entertainment area in my basement. That has been my mid-life "crisis" hobby. I have over 200 movies on VHS, multiple CRT televisions, and nearly every major video game console and Nintendo handheld. I got all the stuff I could never afford when I was a kid.
ProfessorOfLies@reddit
I guess my midlife crisis is trying to finish a side project for once in my life.
joshhupp@reddit
My midlife crisis led me to getting diagnosed with ADHD and autism. Now I know why I have a bunch of half finished projects
small___potatoes@reddit
Recently, it’s been building up a robust 4K Blu Ray collection of all my favorite movies. Basically I re-collected my childhood VHS collection.
joshhupp@reddit
I'm doing DVDs for the widescreen but still a little lofi, this I have run across some Blu Rays of my favorites 80s movies at Goodwill to grab
Living-Video-3670@reddit
I think im going through a reverse midlife crisis. I had a really long beard, and chopped it off a few months ago. Around the same time I took my gauges out, and I've been contemplating getting a tattoo removed that I got when I was 18.
Top-Wolverine-8684@reddit
I've never heard of that, but I can tell you that I work in the auto appraisal industry, and cars being at the center of divorce cases is still very much a thing. For anyone 55+, it is nearly always a Corvette. For Millenials, it's usually a JDM car like a Nissan Skyline - something the husband has sunk tens of thousands of dollars into modifying.
shiftdown@reddit
This is both hilarious and highly interesting to me! How often is it a collection of cars?
Top-Wolverine-8684@reddit
Collections of more than 3 cars oddly don't happen for divorce cases too often. We deal with a LOT of estate cases where dad or grandpa had a collection of cars, most not driven in 30+ years, and then he passes away and leaves the family with the mess. We're currently working on a collection of vehicles that are nearly all worth $100,000 - $500,000 each. The husband was buying cars at auction way above market value, most of them in 2022, which was the height of the car market. It has since crashed. He died of a heart attack and now his wife is left selling all of these high-dollar cars for faaaar less than what he paid. He never even drove most of them after buying them; the odometer readings are the same now as they were in 2022-2025. The whole thing is just very, very sad, but also annoying because he blew millions of dollars on cars before he died that he never drove, and then left his wife to deal with the fallout. I get those calls every single day, just on a lower scale than this case.
joshhupp@reddit
Undiagnosed autism probably
shiftdown@reddit
I'm guessing he probably wasn't planning the death and maybe had ideas or thoughts of how and when he was going to enjoy them! Sad it didn't work out though and it's left to his spouse to sort it out. Do these types of situations have fairly robust Will's in place that would dictate what to do with the items left behind?
Top-Wolverine-8684@reddit
In the cases where the deceased was 75+, they usually either have something in their Will, or they have made their directives known (like, each child and/or grandchild will be given a car). But they still have to have the cars appraised. But we deal with a LOT of cases where someone dies unexpectedly, and it can get really, really ugly with family fighting over the values, and they sometimes end up in court.
Long_Audience4403@reddit
Ugh my dad has a pile of cars and I'm not looking forward to handling them when he goes. Hopefully he will downsize before...
707Eman707@reddit
Can I buy them tho
joshhupp@reddit
That's why I'm putting all my money into toys (Transformers, GI Joe, etc.) No way she'll go after anything of mine in a divorce
absentlyric@reddit
A Dodge Challenger Hellcat was my choice when I went midlife insane.
Now, it's been sitting in the garage since last year with a busted water pump that I haven't had the motivation to wrench on yet this year.
Deathgripsugar@reddit
I got a 78 Honda with the carb out, and I just look at it in the garage and say “don’t worry, I haven’t forgot about you buddy.”
But that’s about it.
AaronDJD@reddit
Lord. I have an WRX STI and still spin at the bars/clubs on the weekends 😭
Top-Wolverine-8684@reddit
I've appraised a lot of those, but usually for Total Loss disputes with insurance companies. They get crashed a lot. 😂
bgva@reddit
I've been window shopping and I swear every time I see an 80s Supra or Prelude, I ask my fiancee' if I can get one. It's a bit of a running joke, but if I had the money and space I'd definitely pull the trigger. But deep down, even if I had the money I have a hard time justifying spending 20K+ on a 40-year-old sports car.
That said, I saw a Del Sol one morning going for $4,500 and I'm still lowkey figuring out how to save up the money.
dinosandbees@reddit
Wait, Preludes are expensive collectibles now? Whoa. Dang. Del Sols are rad little cars, though. Way more accessible price point than S2Ks which, what???
bgva@reddit
I've actually seen a few Preludes in decent shape for a reasonable-ish price. And by that I mean under 7K or so. But Supras are usually five-figures in my area.
seamonkey420@reddit
for me as a MINI guy it was a GP3 ;)
ghostfromtheshell@reddit
Super rad cars. Not crazy about the drive train, but I understand the appeal fully. It's a UK Type R
seamonkey420@reddit
yea, most are not happy about the auto only but man.. that torque and handling is so worth it. and yea, totally a UK Type R minus the AWD.
ghostfromtheshell@reddit
I really think the auto complaining is a cope most of the time
seamonkey420@reddit
i 100% agree. i can drive auto or manual but prefer auto. plus if we are talking performance, manuals can't compete w/a computer shifting.
ghostfromtheshell@reddit
I get both choices. For pure performance, Corvette really is a nutty package. Especially a older Z06. Shame most purchased are just putted around on weekends and washed too often. The Skyline is also a great choice. The car you chose to not be the Mustang or Corvette guy. It seemed mythical and exclusive. The problem is, a stock Skyline is enough, but not for most people. Bigger turbo, engine rebuilds, etc to make it basically unusable and a pain to drive normally.
I've had experience with both and while I understand the appeal, I wish our generation would break the garage grail stigma and get something functional and manageable they can actually enjoy
Lucky-Remote-5842@reddit
Quitting your job and starting a niche business. Or a coffee shop.
bluemitersaw@reddit
Ok. Soooo maybe a few years back I looked into starting a coffee roastery, but that's totally different!!!!!!
Lucky-Remote-5842@reddit
That is totally different! 😅
Lucky-Remote-5842@reddit
Ooooh! Or a brewery. 😜
MonkeyBred@reddit
How about just quitting my job? Can I just stop there?
Lucky-Remote-5842@reddit
I mean... sure, if you can afford to.
bluemitersaw@reddit
Yes, if you have enough money.
CMarlowe@reddit
Rucking for me, I guess. Get a backpack and put weights in it and walk around.
And Mercury Dimes. Don't think I'll ever get the 1916-D though.
BeignetsAndWhiskey@reddit
I think the DJ thing is more specific to reality TV stars because it's an easy way to make money for someone that already has a level of fame. 99% of the people at a Kyle Cook show are there to be in the same room as Kyle Cook. He could be the world's worst DJ and he would still make money from selling tickets. Doing stuff like stand-up or singing or whatever actually requires talent in those areas
Rich_Celebration477@reddit
In my 40’s I have done the following
Bought a 50cc scooter
Took a motorcycle class
Bought a motorcycle
Sold both
Bought a convertible Mini (most fun and worst car I’ve ever owned- blew transmission after 6 months)
Got a divorce
Moved across the country and got a new job apartment
Am I doing it right?
Sodamyte@reddit
Well if we're basing it off reality TV (I also watch Summer House) I'd say "discovering I'm an empath" is a close second
krillthemalll@reddit
Whats an empath?
Sodamyte@reddit
Well on reality TV it's what you say when someone else calls you a narcissist. However, it's someone who is "in tune" with everyone else's feelings around them.
ineffable_my_dear@reddit
I definitely have that (my therapist can confirm lol) but for me it’s nothing mystical, just a trauma response.
CryptographerPrior18@reddit
I always know when someone's uncomfortable at a party.
Clear-Building9428@reddit
But, did a magician make you empath spray?!? Iykyk
Sodamyte@reddit
Oh Craig..
YVRkeeper@reddit
Golf.
Narfubel@reddit
I started sim racing last year and noticed a lot of guys my age or older into it too.
YVRkeeper@reddit
I was never a video game guy, but some of the sim racing rigs I’ve seen are sick.
DrunkShimodaPicard@reddit
Trying to make songs with female singers online. Yes. I love it, yes, it's totally frustrating 90% of the time. No, I won't stop trying, lol
LineImpossible3958@reddit
I had a friend in college with turntables in his room. Mainly for show, because he never used them but acted like he could. We have a party at our house one night and someone sees the turntables and asks him for a demonstration. He has no choice now. He proceeded to put on the saddest scratching performance I’ve went witnessed. You could barely hear what he was doing. Everyone watching sort of just looked away uncomfortably and went back to chatting

Golf. My mid life crisis is golf. I am north of 40 and golf so much it has become my thing. Don't worry, I suck at it. But the cost of this sport is insane. Like owning a corvette or Porsche Boxter. It is now my personality. No, I'm not a dad, nor sales manager, no, I am a golfer. A shitty one.
imhereforthevotes@reddit
I'm way ahead of you all - I've been into birds since I was little. But now... now I'm into rocks.
RailroadMech83@reddit
Mine was starting Muay Thai training. 😂. No regrets though, I’ve lost 26 pounds in a month and a half!

I don't have the energy or the money for another crisis. I've been teaching my children to be Proper Punks and Riot Gurls instead.
yuckysmurf@reddit
Yup! Im teaching my kid about the Clash. Very important.
DetCityDaveST@reddit
I play Lost in the Supermarket for my 7 and 9 year old while we drive to the grocery store!
ModBabboo@reddit
Yep. Became a DJ at 40. Been doing it for over six years and enjoying it more than ever.
DetCityDaveST@reddit
Skateboarding.
I skated for the better part 15 years. Stoped in my early twenties because I was told it was childish. Then started commuting on longboard in my thirties. I now skate transition (bowls, etc) again.
Skateboarding for some people is like golf. It is a physical activity you can do as you age. Obviously I’m not trying to do anything Xtreme.
But I spent thousands of hours doing it. My body still has the muscle memory and it brings me joy like nothing else can.
We have an entire community here: r/OldSkaters.
korbendallas13@reddit
Broke my shoulder back in 2020 at the beginning of my mid life crisis…
DetCityDaveST@reddit
Did you just start in your midlife crisis or did you skate when you were young? If you skated hen you were you h were you trying to skate the same when you are old? I find it is always the new old skaters or ones who try to recapture their youth slam the hardest.
I have just taken a way gentler approach to skateboarding as an adult. I mostly just ride it. Be it around town or carving/kick turn on transition.
korbendallas13@reddit
I skated when I was younger…just fell super awkwardly. Really just a case of bad luck that morning. Decided to hang it up after that. I still love watching other people though.
DetCityDaveST@reddit
That’s a shame. I watch more than I skate a lot of days.
shiftdown@reddit
You're still in your 30s. not an old skater yet lol
DetCityDaveST@reddit
r/OldSkaters is 30+ in the skateboarding world we are ancient!
I’m closing in on 40. But most of my skater friends these days are in their mid to late 40s.
absentlyric@reddit
Went crazy, took a month off of work, then I took a Road trip across the US in a muscle car, back roads only, staying in cheap Motels in small towns, sometimes slept in the car, trying to "find myself" and possibly a nice town to live in, like Silvertown.
Pretty much a dime store version of Supernatural, thats what my midlife crisis was.
TiEmEnTi@reddit
I had my midlife crisis at 15 because I didn't think I would live past 30
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
Mine was quitting my corporate job and trying to work for myself (video production, art, flipping furniture) and doing all the drugs I didn't do in my youth.
Roklam@reddit
I have DHVs next to my basement workstation. They sit next to each other, but only operate individually.
Also for whatever reason I'm super interested in my garden. Not my lawn, just the garden...
McLuvin-83@reddit
Not DJ... Air Fryer... ;)
socksonachicken@reddit
Who the duck has the time or the money for a mid-life crisis?
That being said, I keep eying those 100k motorhome land yachts. I work from home, the kids are almost grown, and I want to fucking hear the God damned ocean every morning when I wake up and have my morning smoke and redbull.
Then when I get bored with that, I drive it to the outskirts of Vegas, plant it on a cheap ass piece of dirt and fight the tarantulas and scorpions over who's gonna get said piece of dirt.
I'm this god damned close to doing it next week.
bgva@reddit
Not DJ'g, but I find myself immersing myself more than ever into creative projects for the first time in about 15 years.
I do photography, and I started making Youtube videos where I talk about my journey. On another channel I post driving and aerial videos from my hometown. I also used to host bar trivia, so I'm slowly finding a way to put some of my creations on paper (well online). It's a creative outlet for things I love, but if I can monetize them as well that would be amazing.
My ADHD brain is weird...I'll spend a couple weeks on one project then put it on the back burner for a few to work on another project.

Buying a cabin and land in a remote area and being wholly self-sufficient.
Long_Audience4403@reddit
My midlife crisis is an obsession with rock climbing as an out of shape middle aged mom
seamonkey420@reddit
me, i quit job and became my mom's caregiver at the end of her life (dementia). that was my midlife crisis fix.. found purpose, can live the rest of my life w/o guilt i didn't do what i did and it forced me to financially prepare for retirement decades ahead of what i planned.
mom passed in 2025 and me.. well here i am.. living a fire life, a humble one though (ie i never go out, cook at home, hang w/pals and lots of video games/tech stuff)
pug_fugly_moe@reddit
It’s bittersweet, isn’t it? You worked one of the hardest, thankless jobs ever and finished it with appreciation and taking action. That takes a ton of fortitude. 2025 sucked for a lot of us, but we suspect our mom’s was an pulmonary embolism.
seamonkey420@reddit
ah thank you for that and yes. so true. sorry to hear about your mom too.
yea, the whole experience dramatically changed how i viewed the world, what i wanted for my future (note i had been running all of my mom's life then) since i was around old people all the time and loved talking to them about their lives and any regrets they had.
for me, life is about doing what i want not having all the toys or taking the big expensive vacations. me, i wanted to be a part of my pals kids lives (be the cool old guy that they can turn to), enjoy my day and try to help as many people as i can. yea.. i'm a cheesy dude but the world needs more cheesy dudes 😉
hedonkey@reddit
Honest question: is there somewhere one would go to LEARN how to be a DJ, eg. What all the equipment is, how it works together? Thinking more like Odesza, Lane 8 EDM type stuff
18randomcharacters@reddit
God damnit, I thought my sudden and random interest in Synthesizers and sequencers and DAWs was just brought on my the algorithms feeding me endless ads for such things. Turns out, that ad deluge was based on demographic.
Lughaidh_@reddit
I’m over here growing my hair back out and getting into making music in DAWs…

I did my time as a DJ when I was 15-20 in the mid-late 90s
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
Well, becoming a DJ costs waaaaay less than a Corvette, and is a form of noise that others can enjoy, so there's that at least.
I finally started a punk band, but that's less of a crisis thing and more "hey, the kids are moved out, I have more free time, more energy, and I know a bunch of musicians" thing.
Not_a_werecat@reddit
My midlife crisis has been taking up a stupidly expensive lapidary hobby which my spouse enables!
FUWS@reddit
The older we get as a society with the internet and technology the more isolated bubble we live in.
I personally think people who go through midlife crisis get fomo from outside influences. Also they prolly didn’t have any hardship growing up. Not saying thats you OP but just in general.

Nice!
eLishus@reddit
Funny, I used to DJ a lot in my 20s and early 30s. It was a pastime hobby that became lucrative and I had several rotations in San Francisco, spinning at iconic places Ike Temple, Cat Club, Temple, etc. I lost the vibe for a while, so sold all my equipment. But I’ve been heavily regretting that the past year and finally just picked up the new Rane One controller. I wouldn’t call it a midlife crisis, so to speak, but I have been missing a creative outlet in my life. My wife was supportive of me having that, even if it meant a $3K price tag for new gear.
DankRoughly@reddit
Rane gear is so nice. Would totally get a Rane mixer if I got back into it.
I'm torn between wanting to go back to the nostalgia of vinyl but honestly the ease of digital mixing and setup is appealing too...
eLishus@reddit
I was always Pi
flapjowls@reddit
I want to buy this thing and make beats from the records I’ve been collecting since high school. Is that my midlife crisis?
ghostfromtheshell@reddit
I don't even mess with music and that thing looks awesome
beerchef@reddit
Same. I've got a few crates I never listen to and only bought to sample.
flapjowls@reddit
It’s really not a bad price at all.
Geoff-Vader@reddit
I don't consider it a crisis. But I'm totally getting back into newer music and going to a ton of concerts. Finding new music is one of the most youthful-like feelings of joy you can still experience at this age. And there's a ton of great 90s-inspired/influenced indie bands out there right now.
My 'crisis'-ish one is probably getting fit. Once my kids started driving themselves I suddenly had a ton of free time - but no money as kids are CRAZY expensive at this age. So the gym is a great, cheap way to spend time cheaply while working also working on me. Just turned 50 and I'm in the best shape I've been in since I played soccer in college. I've got abs and everything. It's like a superpower being fit at this age.

I don't know if it's a midlife crisis or something else, but my "give-a-shit" has reached an all-time low. I was depressed in my early 20s, so I'm pretty sure that isn't it. Even buying something or picking up a hobby to feed the crisis feels like too much work.
Psychological-Web134@reddit
Well, I did just buy 2 new skateboards this month, but I never quit skating, so does that count?

My beard basically becoming my personality is probably my midlife crisis. It being the only part of my appearance that has been complimented in the last 15 years will do that.
Epicardiectomist@reddit
YOU'RE PERFECT YES IT'S TRUE
funny you say DJ, because my midlife crisis is an overwhelming urge to make music. I've done it since 2002 anyways, but I've been a vocalist the whole time. I still sing, but I've also picked up the drums.
If I can spend the 3rd act of my life just jamming on the drums and making music with my friends, I can see myself dying at peace.
throwawayhbgtop81@reddit
I dye my beard. I'm going to try blue next.
I dunno if I'm having a full midlife crisis but I do feel I should be doing something else
