clhodapp@reddit
Seems like a combination of their tailored version of Ubuntu and their tailored version of NixOS, based on past stories.
chemistryGull@reddit
How would you combine these?
clhodapp@reddit
You wouldn't. Different OSes on different machines.
chemistryGull@reddit
Ah thats what you mean. Yeah of course, but that kinda always doubles the work…
clhodapp@reddit
That's true, but them doing a lot of the work predates the sovereignty announcement. I think that, in reality, no one actually knows what they're going to do. Instead, people found the Linux distros the French government technology office already made and wrote extrapolated news stories from there on the assumption that they weren't going to make yet another French government Linux distro.
I think it's a likely that this is true but it's hard to say for sure what will actually happen before the French government makes a formal announcement.
If I had to personally guess, you might see NixOS in security-critical roles and Ubuntu on people's office productivity machines.
chemistryGull@reddit
I mean, it is independent afaik, so in the end it does not really matter who uses it. But yeah, likely not even de french government knows what exactly they will do. I sure hope the pull through with it though.
Heyla_Doria@reddit
C'est ironique pour un gouvernement liberticide, d'opter pour du logiciel libre... Bref, quel interet d'utiliser linux si ca sert a etre contrôlé et réprimé...
MelioraXI@reddit
Nix, this is like the 200th post this week.
chemistryGull@reddit
No way, first time seeing it. Is the DE also clear?
hypespud@reddit
I hope it's KDE
Absolutely love KDE
chemistryGull@reddit
I sure hope it KDE too. They can basically only decide between gnome and KDE (or making their own stuff, which i find HIGHLY unlikely), and from those two i DEFINITELY want KDE to be the one, thats like a million people getting familiar with KDE. If someone deserves that, its KDE.
adamkex@reddit
I'm almost certain they will go with KDE but XFCE is definitely a viable option
chemistryGull@reddit
How is xfce wayland support currently?
adamkex@reddit
Incomplete, but not necessary for government computers
TrivialRamblings@reddit
Based & xfce-pilled
smeg0r@reddit
I hope its mac os
blackcain@reddit
My understanding is that it is KDE, Cinnamon, and something else.
chemistryGull@reddit
Cinnamon? Oddly specific. Was gnome ever on the table there?
blackcain@reddit
Nope.
Here is where they have the list of DE environments: https://github.com/cloud-gouv/securix/blob/main/modules/graphical-interface/default.nix
chemistryGull@reddit
Wait is that the OS basis they'll use? That has been up some time already.
I assume the ministries can then decide for themselves what they want to use? Doesn't that kind of make interoperability and maintenance harder...
Oh I know, i just wondered since i think their gendarmerie used mate, which is more gnome-like. But thinking about it cinnamon does make sense there.
blackcain@reddit
The great thing about Nix is that you can derive whatever you want. It might be that GNOME is too difficult to do at this moment or the enthusiasm was for those other projects.
I don't know what the criteria is. But what should drive their choices is making sure their IT has a robust help desk to help people with the DE that is officially blessed. Learning a new system is hard. Cinnamon probably makes sense because it is operationally similar to Windows I think. Hopefully their French translations are robust.
MelioraXI@reddit
Nothing I've seen, KDE seems like a valid option.
chemistryGull@reddit
Hopin🙏
ilep@reddit
In one article it was mentioned they'd use Gendbuntu (a flavor of Ubuntu) that Gendarmerie has been using for a decade or so.
Henry_Fleischer@reddit
Of course it's a Debian descended distro.
Spirited-Cover7689@reddit
Yeah, I figured why not use a custom fork if you're going for sovereignty.
AnyImpression6@reddit
LeNix
smeg0r@reddit
Did u hear about linux in france?

I'm happy for France escaping the Windows beast at last.
_o0Zero0o_@reddit
We get it! It's a good thing but gods this has been posted like 5000 times already..
Anyway, NixOS is their choice.
littypika@reddit
It's been confirmed that the French government will be using NixOS.
It makes perfect sense, since NixOS is incredibly stable, able to be replicated across multiple systems rather seamlessly, and can easily revert to prior states if anything goes wrong with its current state, since it is a declarative OS.
NaiveCranberry9095@reddit (OP)
they have to use arch so they can say "i use arch btw"
dbdr@reddit
L'arch de triomphe.

Le nix (stole that from someone else)
Fantastic-Fee-1999@reddit
I so hope they build a derived version of NixOs and call it L'inux
daemonpenguin@reddit
Or L'nix, which will cause so much confusion.
chadlavi@reddit
How have you managed not to notice the 500 posts on this topic in this sub before now

It's been planned for a while now.
Amed_Tamer@reddit
They will use new distro ,,French os,, built on Ubuntu, and use Nix for special governmental matters
privinci@reddit
Softlanding Linux System
duobucha@reddit
I hope they'll use Arch so all governmental employees can say "I use arch btw"
AiraHaerson@reddit
It's actually NixOS, btw 😉

Back in the day they said au revoir to Mandriva S.A., a profitable Linux developer & vendor, which had to go bankrupt due to the enormous tax burden imposed to all businesses in France.
CardOk755@reddit
"enormous tac burden". Pfft.
CardOk755@reddit
Plutôt adieu que au revoir.
kereso83@reddit
It will probably be their own custom distro. Parts of their government already use Linux, notably the Gendarmes who use GendBuntu, so we can guess the new one they roll out will be Ubuntu-based.
