You Can't Do that On Television

People gettin' all nostalgic here lately.
Let's go down the Nick Rabbit-hole.
I had a crush on Moose and Alanis (yes, that one).
bradyba@reddit
Alanis Morissette was on it.
TheLurkerSpeaks@reddit
We all know this.
Transferennce@reddit
There's a twitch channel that occasionally runs full episodes
Skullpuck@reddit
My favorite episode of all time was the voting one. During the show, they had red and blue boxes show up on the bottom of the screen so that you could "vote" on things. They would then have the faked results play out. I believed that shit. I believed they could get my vote that way. It inspired me to work with computers and into my IT career. It was genius and very creative.
human8060@reddit
Omg I remember that!!
sharilynj@reddit
Christine would LOVE that story; she ended up in UX.
ilikemrrogers@reddit
The most grown-up joke I heard on it.
It was the living room scene where the drunk dad was always on the chair, and the mom always had the yellow dishwashing gloves on.
The kid asked the dad:
“Dad, what’s the difference between ignorance and indifference?”
“Igggggnorance is when you don’t know, aaaaand indifference is whheeeeeen you don’t give a sh care.”
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
YES! I remember that skit!
Also, fun fact, the dad in that was a senator! (or government official of some kind) The joke being that Canadian politics were so corrupt, Senators were the Brother in Law or something like that of another official. And completely useless/unqualified.
I didn't get that until I was like 20 and found an article on the show on some website or another.
froction@reddit
He played that Senator in a bunch of sketches, it was one of the main recurring characters.
dreaminginteal@reddit
Another one with a crush on Moose, here!

TC_Stock@reddit
loved it. like SNL for kids. I'd never seen anything quite like it at the time.
Party-Cup-9386@reddit
My parents HATED it and did not find it amusing when I suggested they go watch the news on the black and white TV in their bedroom while it was on (we only had cable in the front room).
Fazaman@reddit
Will never forget it. Great show!
shortstop_princess@reddit
I don't know
BMisterGenX@reddit
Liked the show when I was younger but never for one second did I have crush on Moose.
luthurian@reddit
For sure, I was too young for that. I liked Moose, but I didn't *like like* Moose.
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
Fun fact, Moose runs (or ran, last I checked) a funeral home. IDK why that's fun, but it's a fact at least.
sharilynj@reddit
I don’t think that’s a fact either. Source?

The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.
Whipstich-Pepperpot@reddit
OH! I thought we doing shows we loved on Nick, not fawning over only one show. Sorry.
Z-man1973@reddit
First season is on paramount plus
BeebsMuhQueen@reddit
And look at all the smut they are doing on television, now
Competitive-Feed-294@reddit
I still have bizarre nightmares about the firing squad. I love the show, but that bit never felt right.
meatwads_sweetie@reddit
I had a huge crush on Alisdair and Kevin Kubusceski.
annaflixion@reddit
Same!
RicePuddingForAll@reddit
The two most subversive children's televisions programs created by the same person: You Can't Do That on Television, and The Tomorrow People. I still love them both (I'm writing a book on the later).
littlebroknstillgood@reddit
I wish that Tomorrow People had gotten a second season. I loved it so much.
RicePuddingForAll@reddit
The CW show? I liked it; despite some old school fans hating it, I thought it was clearly run by a fan of the series (so many references to the old series, including casting Nick Young, when it wasn't the target audience). The only thing I really knock on it, was that the production company killed the license for audios based on the 1970s series, which was not the target audience, either.
I'm going to need to find a DVD of that, and of the 1990s Nickelodeon version.
Responsible-Bet-8361@reddit
I watched YCDTOT religiously as a kid, and I agree. I think the second most subversive show I have ever seen was Wonder Showzen on MTV simply because it was an adult show vs a show aimed at kids.
gbr1976@reddit
"What do you think is in the burgers?"
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
I loved that he had a bucket ready and saved it for the next burger.
Waste not, want not, I always say!
gbr1976@reddit
"Da..I heard that!"
Barth. 😄😄😄
MinimumAnalysis5378@reddit
Was it Barth? I honestly always heard it as "Barf." I never could figure out why the kids kept going to a place called "Barf's Burgers."
gbr1976@reddit
I'm sure that was intentional. But, yeah, it was Barth.
ericamutton@reddit
Oh my God I was absolutely positively in love with Alistair.
meatwads_sweetie@reddit
Me too!
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
He's still kinda hot

The early seasons were filmed in my city in Canada, at a local TV station :). I got to go to one of the filmings, it was great!

i always wanted to do this show.
Njdevilmn@reddit
OGREtheTroll@reddit
Bwaah...I heard that!
Bathysphered@reddit
When I had a band, we used to play the theme song. People went nuts!
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
Hell. Yeah.
I picked the Trombone in Jr. High for band because of Nick. There was a Pinwheel theme played on the trombone and I had to learn it for myself. Then tried to get YCDTOTV figured out. Got pretty close.
penguinwasteland1414@reddit
I stopped watching before Alanis joined. My favorites were Christine and Allister
Scoobysnax1976@reddit
It filmed in my home town. I bumped into one of the kids in my school library once. They didn't go to my school so I don't know why he was there.
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
Casting more kids maybe?
nixtarx@reddit
Our cable co didn't get Nick until after that show was gone. 😢
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
I'm sorry for your loss.
Puzzleheaded-Sky3141@reddit
Diiiiiiieeeee heard that!!
PollutionZero@reddit (OP)
BARF!!!
beardedweirdoin104@reddit
Show lives up to its name, no way you could do this today. Sketches about a bus driver driving kids off a cliff? Good stuff.
Bathysphered@reddit
Kids shot by a firing squad!
prayingforrain2525@reddit
I'm drinking water
reddaddiction@reddit
I didn't have cable until way later :/
only_Zuul@reddit
Moose was so awesome. I lost interest in the show when she left.
LadyNorbert@reddit
I wanted to be Alanis. And then later I wanted to be her even more. (After all, she is God, at least in the View Askewniverse.)
Beetso@reddit
Everyone remembers You Can't Do That On Television. Turkey Television is way more obscure!
zaypuma@reddit
We also had ZigZag which was like Temu YCDTOT.
luthurian@reddit
That's where I first discovered Weird Al. Turkey TV was fantastic!
zombie_overlord@reddit
What was the one with the monkeys re-enacting famous old movies?
local_weather@reddit
This show was standard viewing at our house before dinner every afternoon. For some reason I got into the habit of saying “he cracks!” at the point in the opening sequence where the guys face cracks. Over time it began to enrage my younger sister, she started to hate it. What made it worse is she knew I was going to say it and she’d start getting angry just thinking about me saying it. Finally my parents had to ban me from saying it at all.
DinoHimself@reddit
I’m still sour that it was never released on DVD
OpusCroakus1@reddit
The cook had the catchphrase, "I heard that..."
Dirty_Wookie1971@reddit
I always heard it like this…
Digh heard that
RemarkablePaper1798@reddit
The only TV show my dad tried to ban me from watching (Mom overruled). Alasdair may have been my first TV crush.
thebiglerm@reddit
Yes my dad hated this show. He thought it was called nickelodeon so my dad would always say "I hate that damn nickelodeon!"
