How to resist the + button?

Because I ride long distances I will not ride without the battery.
Problem is I feel addicted to speed so I almost always max the + button without thinking about it automatically.
Result: feeling stressed, having to overtake a lot, having to brake more often, battery drains faster..
When I ride slow and am resistung the + urge, its really difficult to maintain. It feels like selfsabotaging even though I know its not. Its feels very uncomfortable to go slower than possible.
Have adhd so maybe that plays a role in my speedadiction

considering that you can manually pedal an ebike at over the 25 kph EU/UK limit in just second gear of a standard 7 speed bike, which assist level you're using only matters for taking off and getting up to where you take over manually.

I never use the upper power levels, just because I know it will wear out stuff quicker, which I don't want. I'm sort of obsessed with stuff lasting a long time. I changed the programming on my BBS02 drive unit from 5 assist levels to now have 9 levels. Basically the original 5 with a half-step in between. I almost always use assist 4 out of 9, and occasionally bump it up to 5 or 6 for some bigger hills. But I've never actually used it on 7 thru 9. Maybe that's why my build is 9 years old now, with over 11,000 miles, and not a single problem from the BBS02. I've never touched it since first installation.

I do something similar radrunner Plus, I start out with gears at 7 in fact I've never changed it so it's basically direct drive. The assist mode I start out at level five top, after a block or two I will drop it to two or three once I've had a warm up. I'm also on a cargo bike rated way higher than I need to reduce wear

You don’t change gears? I have an 8 speed and am always shifting the upper 5 gears. Start out in 4 or 5, and cruise in 6, 7 or 8 depending on the grade of the road. In 11,000 miles I’ve had to replace my chain 3 times I think, and the 8 speed cassette once.

No because I live in a court and I use level 5 pedal assist until the end of the Court then I drop it to level two or three in other words I use the battery to get up to speed once I'm at speed I go shift over to my legs instead of transitioning up the gears. I haven't needed to use the gears since I bought the bike in January

My suggestion:
Try to make a "hypermile" challenge once or twice a week, reward yourself with nice food\snacks
Try to organize trips with "slower" friends, it will get benefits of riding somewhere much more safer!

It's funny but it works I used to go to a Carl's Jr that was 2 miles further out of my commute for that kind of thing.
Currently though my first few blocks are full assist (level five) then I drop it down to level two or three when I'm up at cruising speed allows my body to adjust to the higher rate quicker

I have a rad runner Plus, with five levels and 7 gears class 2.
I have it on gear 7 and start on level four or five assist when I get up to speed I drop it down to level three or two so I'm at speed but slowly work my way into working harder on the bike. You know it's giving yourself the instant boost and then slowly working yourself into a harder ride
Worried_Document8668@reddit
train yourself enough to not need the high assists to go fast. saves batter, allows for even longer rides and has health benefits. win win

Works for the battery though my goal is to go slower which is not achieved by simply changing the motor leg raTio
Worried_Document8668@reddit
if you have more power in your legs, there's no need to go slower. You just wanted a reason to not up the assist

Slower = safer, less stressful, less overtaking, less braking.
Blasting 30 km/h through a city is not necessarily dangerous but i lt can be stressful and cause excessive brake wear.
Worried_Document8668@reddit
ride a bike without motor and the whole issue would sort itself
catboy519@reddit (OP)
I trust myself with the ebike have about 20000km on it. I just want to adopt a more relaxed driving style that also reduces wear on the bike.
LexLex07@reddit
Get a cheap chinese battery and eveything will be solved in just 1 hour, lol
Laserdollarz@reddit
I get really stoned first. Then I'm just cruising.
derping1234@reddit
I make it a game with myself to try and keep the motor engaged only on a minimal level. Just leave home a couple minutes earlier and smell the flowers. You arrive much more relaxed and enjoy the rest of your day.

The only way I know of to get cyclists to slow down is for them to crash. The ones that survive tend to go slower, for a while anyway.

Anecdotally most of my closecalls have happened at low speed (like thinking the road is clear when its not and then almost accelerating to much)
Fit-Albatross-735@reddit
get a lower power bike, normal bike or just set a speed limiter
andybossy@reddit
I can change what I see on the little screen
I changed to show my own power output and I try to get that number high instead
texastoasty@reddit
use some double sided tape and attach a lego on the plus button lol
not sure how we are supposed to help you really, the issue is self control, not the bike. maybe shifting focus to longer term like whats coming up, is therea hill, a light, or a stop sign, will help you understand your power needs better?
CerebralAccountant@reddit
My ADHD solution was to turn my focus towards efficiency (maximizing range, using just enough electricity so I don't waste it on braking right after, etc.), increase the number of PAS levels on my bike from 5 to 9, and constantly adjust the PAS as I'm riding.
atlasraven@reddit
Set the assist with the + / - . Cover the buttons with tape.
