What happened between Cammisa and Liebermann?

As a long time watcher of Jason Cammisa since his Ignition days, I have heard a few allusions here, probably on a Carmudgeon show episode or something.
Curious if anyone knows the backstory or better yet can link a podcast episode that explains it.
k792@reddit
The thing about Jason Cammisa is you could mention him on Reddit and he might actually show up to see if you’re talking shit, but to get Jonny to see your trolling you have to get on Instagram
JasonCammisa@reddit
All I takes, apparently, is for someone to talk about my crotch. (And then someone else to tag me in it lol.)
Mike9978h@reddit
I would like to know the beef between Jason and Jack Baruth from their time at Hagerty together.
JasonCammisa@reddit
Why do I have to have beef with everyone lol? Maybe I prefer chicken?!
Beastbamboo@reddit
Jack Baruth is an insufferable dick. I'd be more surprised if he didn't have beef with someone.
JasonCammisa@reddit
Juicy as this is: nothing happened! Well, other than me quitting Motor Trend (because it was an awful place to work.) Jonny and I weren't friends before we worked together; we're not friends now. We're just different people with different interests and perspectives. Nothing salacious.
foshjowler@reddit
Were you in Raleigh recently? There was an e-Golf driving maniacally, and surely there aren’t multiple
JasonCammisa@reddit
Hahaha I certainly was not - so somewhere in NC there’s another amazing human with an e-Golf and a lead foot. Love it!
illadelphia_215@reddit
Dude I’m a HUGE fan of your work! You have the BEST auto content on the entire planet. The production quality is unreal! Keep up the great work!
JasonCammisa@reddit
Thank you! Trying!!
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit
Thank you for being so honest but considerate. You make great content now ànd I loved watching you guys together on motor trend.
JasonCammisa@reddit
Thank you!

Your welcome
Dreyel@reddit
Jason, big fan of your work, love the carmudgeon show, god bless the Mitsubishi EVO (except the 10)
JasonCammisa@reddit
Haha except the 10. Thanks!
Wyclops@reddit
I dropped my motor trend subscription not long after you left and didn't draw that parallel until reading this post and its comments. I rather enjoy your perspective and passion. Even when you have a clear opinion or bias towards something you always deliver factual and entertaining automotive content without much of a spin on it. I won't slight the "other guy" here, just wanted to say thank you and keep doing what you're doing!
JasonCammisa@reddit
Thank you!
efficiency_deficit@reddit
Is it truly the legend himself speaking to us mere mortals?! Or some sick parody meant to torture his avid followers? Do I retort with a witty Randy Pobst one liner? Perhaps some novel question about what it must be like to be an automotive media god who possesses the dadest of dad bods without being a dad? Your work is transcendent and ethereal and the second I see anything you do, I stop all tasks to once again be transported to the great mind of The Cammisa view points! We’re not long for this world, but I cherish all forms of media you participate in. Go forth Real Jason Cammisa™️ and delight us once more! Also, Lieberman can suck it.
JasonCammisa@reddit
LOL - thank you. But how could you call me not a dad when I have a garage full of my children to support? Miserable, cantankerous, oil-leaking, sputtering, cranky little childrens....
efficiency_deficit@reddit
Ah, but of course! And dude, seriously: your 850i(M8) is such a great car. And for realsies: how’s the Rover coming along? Ready for an update.
JasonCammisa@reddit
There have been some stumbling blocks with the Rover NGL. I did an update on the Carmudgeon show a couple weeks ago but TL;DR: The accident stuff was fixed long ago, car looks amazing with euro bumpers front and rear and a full euro headlight and grille conversion. The original motor was rebuilt as part of Hagerty’s Redline Rebuild series - with the goal of doubling horsepower. Unfortunately it seized up on the dyno. And the guy who built it (my coworker Davin) was let go afterward - unrelated but his position was eliminated. I tried everything I could to get everyone on the same page to have him pull it back apart and fix it (he wanted it too - he of course wants to know wtf happened!!) but it just wasn’t gonna work. So the car is now at a Rover specialist shop called TWS Motors in MA and they’re installing a fresh crate 3.5. Goal was to have it running this week - so with any luck it’ll be back to me in a couple of weeks. I cannot watt.
The49GiantWarriors@reddit
I have nothing to add to this particular topic, but I did want to say that you have the best auto content online. I've always been impressed with the quality and I've always learned new things.
JasonCammisa@reddit
Thanks, all you guys!
LogicWavelength@reddit
Just wanted to also say your videos are amazing!
Also just to throw this out into the universe: a brief history of pre-war American luxury brands like Packard or Will St Claire could make for some neat content! Some of those companies did some really cool stuff and made some huge innovations before WWII got in the way. Younger audiences may not even realize the best stories and drama and cool tech that existed in the early days of American manufacturing. Get Jay involved!
JasonCammisa@reddit
Fun idea!!

Love your videos on Hagerty ❤️
NightFuryToni@reddit
It always excite me when a new Revelations episode is up.
S1n1sterGat3s@reddit
Man you should really be in the new Grand Tour show. You can drive, you’re great on camera and you would add some real genuine comedy. By far the best automotive journalist below Clarkson himself of course 😁
BeerorCoffee@reddit
We need more drag races! You are so brave showing off your power to slow time and walk next to cars going 100+ mph.
carsnbikesnstuff@reddit
Agreed! Great stuff Jason. Love the Revelations episodes especially. 👊🏼

benmarvin@reddit
Yes! So many other podcasts I can't even listen to because of the tone or cadence of the hosts voice.
benmarvin@reddit
Seconding this. The articles, the YouTube videos, and one of the only car podcasts I can actually enjoy listening to. Some content out there is so insufferable, even if it's about something you want to learn about.
Fatigue-Error@reddit
Love your work! I just rewatched the Carmudgeon episode with Anthony and Rob. Loved the peek behind the curtain.
Calm_Project723@reddit
Jason, do you take the same pleasure that I do at looking at the number of views on Johnny’s YouTube channel? I think there are definitely recorded quaker religious events that have more views than most of Johnny’s videos. I’m starting to think that his algorithm is backwards and he’s paying people not to watch. And despite being a heterosexual male and not knowing the sexuality of you or the hyphen, I enjoy some automotive podcast content that doesn’t bash you over the head with testosterone.

Just wanted to comment that zr1x drag video last month was the most fascinating drag race video I have ever seen. The creativity and the editing was phenomenal. As a singular piece it rivals many of the best top gear moments while being so different than the top gear formula
autobauss@reddit
Oh snap...
Do you perhaps know why Lieberman never went to work on other car videos? His reviews and talking segments were awesome, now only can hear him once a year or so at the smoking tire podcast
han_solex@reddit
Jonny's got a youtube channel, Driving With Jonny. He also does InEVitable with Ed Loh and other vids on MotorTrend. So there are other places you can watch him.
autobauss@reddit
Oh wow thanks
comsputer@reddit
He's frequently on Spikes Car Radio, almost weekly.
Bau5_Sau5@reddit
Johnny has become a try hard. He wants to be rich and really puts himself out there. Nothin wrong with it but it’s just weird. He surrounds himself with Spike who literally is a wannabe Seinfeld. The whole dynamic is super weird.
That’s why he got into whiskey and watches, hoping he would start something on his own but he’s really not that talented just well connected.
Teutonic-Tonic@reddit
How dare he try to make money.

Jason is Lord!
Wirenfeldt@reddit
I think one issue may be that Cammisa is able to not only back up his position on damn near any subject with stacks of paper and endless data, and additionally seems able to go about his day afterwards whereas Jonny, I think, sometimes would want to end the conversation with a parking lot bare knuckle grudge match..
JasonCammisa@reddit
I don't think I'd go quite that far. But I will say you do notice a fundamental difference in the way we approached journalism: if Jonny likes something, it's a good car. If he hates it, it's a bad car. I've always tried to keep my own biases out (with varying success) — concentrating instead on whether a car hits its intended target audience. And, like you said, I'm a nerd, so I use lots of data to back it up.
someonesaveus@reddit
Jason I know you've got and have had an extensive BMW collection - do you own an E9x M3? You seemed smitten with it in the M3/RS4/C63/CTSV video and I've been curious ever since.
I'm a BMW enthusiast myself (read: glutton for punishment) I've been through all of the greats - Every M3 including the E30, E39 M5, etc...) and I just keep coming back to the E9x M3 - being on my third at present! I cannot get enough of this car.
JasonCammisa@reddit
I don’t own an E9X, no. To be honest it’s too much var for where I live and how I drive. Too big, way too heavy, and way too fast. I like my cars much smaller and more… dramatic. That said, I do respect the hell out of that thing. I’d probably choose a manual swapped 6.3 Mercedes over it but it’s very hard to fault that as an overall package!
BillyJohnsFinds@reddit
He owns 2 E30s and an E31, no other BMWs I believe
Motohvayshun@reddit
I agree here. And also, as a long time fan of yours, you seem less snobbish about some cars than Lieberman. I mean he’s been hanging out with Spikes car radio, and he seemed more snobbish than Seinfeld, which I thought wasn’t possible. Jerry was going on about some old cheap car that he liked and he couldn’t even seem to fake interest, it really took me out of it.
He’s still a good journo, I like reading some of his old stories back in the day.
JasonCammisa@reddit
How could I possibly be snobbish about cars — or anything else? I'm complete trash and I know it! :P
Motohvayshun@reddit
lol dont sell yourself low mate. Love your content, you’re the best journo that handled the print to media switch the best.
Wirenfeldt@reddit
Had a thought today.
You said you would've bought the Super20 NC MX-5 if Mazda would sell it to you.. Have you done the math on what recreating it in 2026 might cost?
JasonCammisa@reddit
I absolutely did — and would have paid whatever they asked, but they wouldn't sell it to me. I don't think it'd be THAT insane to make that car. Certainly a fraction of the cost of any new sports car...
yobo9193@reddit
Like when he lied about the Cybertruck being the first car with steer by wire when the Infiniti Q50 had it almost a decade prior?
Jason’s a great entertainer but he makes mistakes and, when called out on them, doubles down on them instead of admitting where he was wrong
JasonCammisa@reddit
Thankfully I see this comment already has -2 upvotes. I absolutely do not double-down on my mistakes; I think you're talking about our good friend Matt Farah. Since you've brought up that goddann Cybertruck, I've certainly admitted that I didn't get that episode right. It came across as a 100% positive review when it was actually only an engineering presentation.
Regarding the steering: I covered DAS (Direct Adaptive Steer) on the Q50 when it came out. Did a whole Motor Trend Ignition episode on that POS car and that horrendous steering system. It was indeed steer-by-wire, but retained a traditional steering column and gear — it used a clutch to re-engage the steering wheel if it detected any faults. The Cybertruck was, and is, the first production car without a physical connection — and is thus the first true by-wire steering.
It's okay, we all make mistakes. Now you can admit you just made one, too.
redd5ive@reddit
The only thing about that situation that does not sit well with me is that your non-review is (still) titled "Exclusive 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Full Review...". That's either a title you and your team chose and have stuck with or a title Hagerty imposed on the video - neither of those scenarios seem ideal.
yobo9193@reddit
Yes, you tried to gaslight the audience into believing that in your recent episode on TST, but Zack pointed out the title of your video explicitly calls it a review. So thanks for already proving my point there.
The Nissan/Infiniti DAS also doesn't have a physical connection....under normal driving conditions. You could've pointed that out in your review, but Tesla probably wanted you to hype up the fact that they were the first to not have redundant steering controls even though they have a garbage record for safety. The only mention of Nissan/Infiniti DAS is in the subtitles of the video. Seems like you only caught that in post-production?
Except I don't try to pretend that I'm a journalist. When actual sources of journalism make mistakes, they make edits to their articles and retract statements. I listened to your whole podcast with Matt after your original review came out and it came across as someone who was handed talking points by Tesla, repeated them without doing their due diligence, and then had to scramble to justify them after the fact.
Tell you what, Jason: I'll admit that you're right about the steering if you revisit this thread and admit that you pulled a quote from VW's CFO out of your booty, saying the company was 1-2 years from bankruptcy, when a quick review of their financials would've shown you that wasn't true.
jeremiahishere@reddit
The tesla review wasn't perfect. I think we can agree on that.
Jason isn't perfect. Most agree he is a human. I could see some disagreements from the Venusian delegation though.
You go into a Jason video knowing you are going to get hyperbole to make points instead of milquetoast recitation of facts. Do you want him to make autoweek or kbb videos instead? What is your gaol here?
IStillLikeBeers@reddit
He probably should have been more specific but he wasn't wrong - the Cybertruck is the first car that is purely steer by wire with no backup or failsafe. The Q50 still has a mechanical linkage as a failsafe. The Cybertruck does not.
yobo9193@reddit
That's a favorable interpretation of what he said, which I would agree with if not for the other factual inaccuracies he repeated in his review.
IStillLikeBeers@reddit
It's not an "interpretation". Go to 11:20 of the video. The quote is:
"For the very first time ever on a production car, there is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels."
The Q50 (and other steer by wire cars) have a physical connection as a failsafe.
He even put it in the subtitles that "The Nissan system still had a steering column!"
yobo9193@reddit
The Infiniti DAS also doesn’t have a physical connection between the steering wheel and the rack…under normal driving conditions. The fact that he only mentions DAS in the subtitles and not in the video is because they knew they fucked up by not talking about it in the actual video.
Idk why you appear in every thread that mentions him to leap to his defense, but there’s plenty of other examples of him being clearly in the wrong that I’ve linked elsewhere.
IStillLikeBeers@reddit
Is the statement "For the very first time ever on a production car, there is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels." on its own and on its face true or false? Simple question.
golfingmadman@reddit
Lieberman seems like a complete pain to work with. And he crashes too much.

Speaking of Jason - really enjoy him but the man needs some real pants. He’s always wearing these paper thin Uniqlo looking pants and his junk is truly swingin and flopping around all over giving everyone an unsolicited anatomy lesson. I mean - I’m happy for him. But dude.

Cammisa is such a great car journalist / podcaster / video presenter / content creator. His Hagerty videos are better than anything else being made right now
Liebermann comes across as a pretentious prick in everything he does. There have been several times when I stopped reading an article because it was such bullshit and knew it was him before I saw his name.
No idea if theres a history between the two lol I just wanted to say how much I love Jason and can't stand Jonny

"Curious if anyone knows the backstory or better yet can link a podcast episode that explains it."
This is why I'm never gonna bother to tell the hundred awful stories I know about all sorts of people in the business, including the woman who was turning high dollar tricks at manufacturer press events and auto shows. Because some people can't absorb any information unless it's in a podcast where three jagoffs are bloviating about something for 90 minutes.
"Yah, bro, did you hear [REDACTED] was blowing dudes at NYIAS?"
"Whoa, she's a dime, bro."
"I know, bro."
"That's sick, bro."
"You said it, bro. *clears throat* And now a message from our sponsor. California Car Scratcher, the number one Boomer-approved tool to rub dirty shit all the way into your GT3's clearcoat. Don't scratch cars with a regular mitt, use the California Car Scratcher. I use it all the time to scratch the cars my dad gave me. Mention this podcast for five percent off. Again, that's California Car Scratcher, the inexcusable piece of shit thing that exists for no reason."
"Bro, nice sponsor shout, man. Those Car Scratchers are sick."
"Yeah, bro. What were we saying?"
"We were saying how the GT3 convertible has 95% of the performance of the regular GT3. In fact, I got a note here that says I need to repeat this five times during the podcast to get my next free trip to Europe."
"That's sick, bro."

Unrelated to speculated drama, but Jason’s documentary on Piëch is one of the best pieces of auto journalism I’ve ever seen. Top shelf production, and storytelling punctuated by his passion for the subject matter which is so clearly conveyed. Absolute masterclass.
saazbaru@reddit (OP)
Absolutely my favorite car video ever, without a doubt.
khanak@reddit
I feel like Jason Cammisa is in a completely different league compared to Lieberman. The stuff he does on Hagerty is some of the best automotive content online right now.
What stands out is how much depth he brings without making it feel heavy or overly technical. He’s really good at connecting the dots between history, engineering, and what the car actually feels like to drive. It all flows in a way that feels natural instead of like separate segments stitched together.
There’s also a lot more personality and intention in how his videos are put together. The pacing, the humour, and the way he builds a story around each car make it feel more like a well-crafted piece of media than a standard review. I look forward to everything he puts out and have watched most of his videos multiple times over.
turb0_encapsulator@reddit
I wanna know how they do that camera stuff.
Froman_@reddit
The "slow-mo" in the drag race replay? My educated guess is they cut a clip from the race, place the cars in the same spot and drive them slow so that Jason can get out and do the walking/speaking portions. Add some heat shimmer and other effects overtop and it looks pretty seamless.
turb0_encapsulator@reddit
but they must mirror the camera movement perfectly.
YellowFogLights@reddit
It’s pretty incredible what you can accomplish when you care enough. If you do all your shots with known times & distances, you can recreate them later.
But it takes a lot of prep work.

Also his automotive passion can transcend socioeconomic standing. Most modern journalists don’t touch affordable cars or anything performance under $20k. As someone who has a $500 shitbox cabriolet that i love, it’s nice to not hear for the umpteenth time that suchandsuch new Porsche drives really really good. I say that having owned multiple Porsche sports cars.

My 2 cents are that Jason has personality and passion for days that really shines through with videos or podcasts where he can express his thoughts in his own voice. He’s also full of chaotic energy that probably wears on people over time.
Lieberman seems like a writer that got roped into videos but that was never really his passion.
So when Motor Trend stopped doing their video series, why would they continue to work together?
