Courtney Love really was right about specifically two people and probably some other stuff.
one_among_the_fence@reddit
What did Courtney Love say about her?
FungiStudent@reddit
"Being famous is just like being in high school. But I'm not interested in being the cheerleader. I'm not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She's the cheerleader".
And then Gwen wrote hollaback girl in response
Then Love had an 8 month affair with Gwen's husband Gavin Rosedale.
Somehow I missed all of this drama back in the day.

GarciaWolf@reddit
Wasnt her ex the bass player
unicorn-beard@reddit
Yeah I was always impressed how they were able to make it work, she's literally singing about him, kinda awkwarrrd
tMoneyMoney@reddit
Not as awkward as most of Fleetwood Mac’s entire catalog.
__Art__Vandalay__@reddit
Laughs in Fleetwood Mac
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
Oh the conundrum that was Fleetwood Mac.
They worked best when they all hated each other the most!
__Art__Vandalay__@reddit
I told my kids “there were times they were singing AT each other…not to each other”
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
I never thought of it that way, but you are so right!
stuntycunty@reddit
Tragic how she turned out tho. What a shame.
squish042@reddit
Yup, she’s a poser
DaniTully@reddit
People of this thread, You are my people. Since about 5 seconds after I saw her I knew she was acting the part. I never bought her punk/ska creditials and have for 30 years stood by my stance. The few friends I still have from back in the day laugh at how justified my hatred and calling her out all those years have been.
Street_Narwhal_3361@reddit
She isn’t, though. She is and has always been an Orange County conservative Catholic culture vulture.
SquatOnAPitbull@reddit
It's definitely a thing with a lot of SoCal folks that grew up with punk. I grew up listening to Sublime and a lot of their songs mentioned FTP, date rape, etc. And then it turned, and Bud Gaugh is wearing a MAGA hat.
I've seen a lot of people make that move politically. A lot moved to Arizona physically.
Rampasta@reddit
File Transfer Protocol? Fuck The People?
Why_So-Serious@reddit
That’s a great lyric right there.
squish042@reddit
Well yeah, that’s the definition of poser. She played at being alt punk while being an OC con the whole time.
mvillegas9@reddit
First thing I thought
Possible-Jerk0138@reddit
She is THE poser
Procrasturbating@reddit
Never thought I would use that term unironically again, but here we are.
squish042@reddit
I haven’t used it in decades, but it fits so well here
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Are we talking about her conservative religious views? Because she always had those. They came up in the interviews about this song.
Local_Use4891@reddit
It’s more than just her personal views— she’s become a shill for the religious fruitcake industry: https://www.reddit.com/r/religiousfruitcake/s/U9LL8x5gAm
ChiefSampson@reddit
Ew....I was done with her when she married Blake Shelton, but it seems it just continues to get worse...
a_seventh_knot@reddit
lol wtf?
pay to pray?
Local_Use4891@reddit
I know! It’s insane what she’s up to now!
Orson_Gravity_Welles@reddit
That's that whole "Prosperity Religion"
Something about the more you pay, the closer you are to god and the more prosperous you are.
It's BS and a grift.
LowandSlow90@reddit
Sounds like scientology.
WhoDatNinja30@reddit
The word I’m pulling from my public school education is “indulgences”.
Orson_Gravity_Welles@reddit
Little bit of Column A and a bit of Column B.
a_seventh_knot@reddit
"hi sir, this is Jesus, your last check bounced so I'm sorry, I can't cure your cancer"
shit is beyond fucking weird at this point.
Mobile-Boss-8566@reddit
I just hate it when celebrities are jerks to common people. When I heard she was repeatedly rude to the Hotel staff I stopped listening to her music and pitched any albums I had. We made her and we can ruin her career.
DenvahGothMom@reddit
Seriously. She's awful.
JeffBeckwasthebest@reddit
My words, just terrible. Don't speak is one of the most terrible songs on the planet, can't hear it anymore 🤮
j65816@reddit
I'm confused. How did she turn out?
Local_Use4891@reddit
I don’t think you should get downvoted for asking— I just recently found out what she has turned into and am happy to share this video to spread the word: https://www.reddit.com/r/religiousfruitcake/s/U9LL8x5gAm
j65816@reddit
It sounds like she didn't turn into anything bad; just that people don't agree with some of her positions.
Local_Use4891@reddit
My bad, I thought you asked a genuine question. Again, the problem isn’t her conservative views, the problem is that she’s a grifter.
j65816@reddit
I guess I still don't see it. I mean, it's an application if somebody wants to pay for it, so what? Tom Morello takes corporate money to do speeches. Is that grifting? Do we view him with the same negativity?
Local_Use4891@reddit
I‘m just sorry I took the bait
Steel1000@reddit
Put a lens on just about anyone in the industry and you’ll find out they are all in it for the money. They say what sells and act like they are told.
The amount of people who think they “know” someone like this always amazes me.
Putrid-Art-1559@reddit
She didn’t turn into anything though, she’s always been like this. It was hidden better back then but there are a lot of old interviews where you definitely see the religious conservative side of her.
Local_Use4891@reddit
My intro to her was her mooning the crowd outside of the TRL studio— there has definitely been a progression from someone who just had conservative views to someone who is now an actual shill for Christofascist scammers
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I didn't know either. I don't follow celebrity gossip and happenings. All that bleach going to her brain.
gibson85@reddit
One word for you. Just one word: plastics!
mrjowei@reddit
She was always a conservative catholic
frenchinhalerbought@reddit
Yeah, thought the video was clever back then, not a road map
patchhappyhour@reddit
I saw her perform out here in San Diego a few years ago. I was less than impressed. She definitely forgot her roots.
Orson_Gravity_Welles@reddit
I saw ND open for U2 in the early 2000's and as much as I LOVED the Return of Saturn album, I was super unimpressed by their performance AND her live voice.
Sad to see she went down the MAGA route, but from what I understand, she was always on that path.
gibson85@reddit
Tragic Kingdom
klsi832@reddit
Kingdom how she was then tho
copyrighther@reddit
She’s always been this way, you just weren’t reading her interviews
Upset-Word151@reddit
I was a KoRn/NIN/Metallica fan as a teen, so I loathed her. Glad my gut reaction was right though, considering what she “became”
epidemicsaints@reddit
I feel like she pivoted to our parents, which is a strange and interesting career move for a musician.
InfidelZombie@reddit
She used to be Baberaham Lincoln. Now she's a gnarly old goat dude.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Gwen Stefani made exactly the kind of music was popular in exactly that moment.
PhoneJazz@reddit (OP)
I’d say they were groundbreaking, if anything. “Just a Girl” and “Spiderwebs” were unlike anything I’d heard on the radio before. Their ska horn riffs predated, or possibly helped usher in, the ska revival of the next few years.
wazacraft@reddit
It's because they played ska, but Tom was a metal guitarist, which created basically a whole new sub-genre.
Dan_Berg@reddit
Man I despised pop punk but Unwritten Law were so fucking underrated.
tMoneyMoney@reddit
They were kind of overrated at one point, at least in so Cal. In the 90’s I saw Blink 182 open for them at a tiny venue and they were introduced as “these guys are going to be HUGE!”
MathematicianTop8868@reddit
That explains why I loved their guitar so much, I’m definitely more of a metal head at heart.
Procrasturbating@reddit
They are on the tail-end of the third wave of ska. It was pretty popular already. That said, Tragic Kingdom was my first CD purchase.
bosco9@reddit
It also helped that Gwen was hot and had mass appeal
OoT-TheBest@reddit
Just a Girl was mindblowing when it came out
OllieFromCairo@reddit
They were on the tail end of the third wave of ska. The pre-existing popularity of the genre helped them sell Tragic Kingdom, not the other way around.
TheFoxandTheSandor@reddit
I remember that was the main song at our middle school dance that year. What a time to be alive
Skywren7@reddit
Black by Pearl Jam was my go to song
PhoneJazz@reddit (OP)
I saw them in concert at the 1996 HFStival on my 14th birthday. RFK Stadium, DC. What a show!
roaremipsum@reddit
OMG — I went to the 1999 HFStival on my 14th birthday! ✨ formative DMV experience twinsies ✨
PhoneJazz@reddit (OP)
Amazing! ✨ I’m still in the DMV and still go to concerts at the 9:30 Club and Black Cat!
roaremipsum@reddit
I’m so jealous! Two top tier venues — am out west these days and miss them dearly! Did make it back for the throwback HFS at Nationals Park couple years ago (forgive me if this isn’t the right name for it I’m telling on myself being gone a while)
Ralliman320@reddit
I've always wondered if the band knew they were dramatizing their own future.
roaremipsum@reddit
Fleetwood Mac reprise
ahoypolloi_@reddit
Right? Like this video is basically exactly what happened to them eventually
drainbamage1011@reddit
Wasn't the song written about their breakup?
sanedragon@reddit
Yes
0000Matt0000@reddit
Im pretty sure they broke up first.
ahoypolloi_@reddit
I meant the whole band
klsi832@reddit
It was already happening
memymomeddit@reddit
I still hate that song from how overplayed it was in 1997.
xParesh@reddit
Oh wow, so it’s been 30 years since I finished school? 😦
Undertherainbow69@reddit
That aside from what I understand, this song is about the person she loved left the band and became a Simpsons writer I believe
collinwade@reddit
RIP old Gwen
Writeforwhiskey@reddit
I'm wrapping my around the fact that for my 15 yo kid this would be like a Motown song for me in 1996.
wxguy215@reddit
This one hurt
omgphilgalfond@reddit
Yep! The Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love” came out in 1966 for reference. We are not exactly young…
rythmicjea@reddit
I'll never forget this on pop-up video talking about how the video's story was about how a record label wanted to make her the front woman and separate the band from her and she was like "No! It's all of us or none of us!"
__Art__Vandalay__@reddit
On an unrelated note, how awesome was Pop Up Video?
rythmicjea@reddit
So awesome. I miss it more than I think I should lol
Dan_Berg@reddit
IIRC it was based on a magazine that actually did cut the rest of the band out on the cover, allegedly without consulting the band, and they were pissed.
rythmicjea@reddit
Yes!
Danbarber82@reddit
30 years later and this video is so hilariously ironic.
sandglider@reddit
It's like 10,000 spoons when all I need is a knife
Rust_Bucket37@reddit
Haha that really lasted didn't it?
FoggyFallNights@reddit
I felt this song in my soul just now when I read the post. Man time flies…30 years gone just.like.that.
snowboard7621@reddit
Tragic Kingdom came out in October 1995, what is everyone here smoking lol
Secure-Force-9387@reddit
I honestly never liked this song, never liked No Doubt, and never liked Gwen. Couldn't ever put my finger on it, but I never read her interviews because I didn't like her. Now that she's louder, I understand what that nagging feeling about her always was.
yranigami001@reddit
Zionist.
ADMotti@reddit
Back before Gwen sucked
lurk3141592653589793@reddit
She sucked then too, but nobody knew about it. Just a Girl coming from her was always posing.
outcastspidermonkey@reddit
I hate that song.
Noname_Maddox@reddit
Tom the guitarist announced last week he has early onset Parkinson’s. Getting old sucks
lurk3141592653589793@reddit
Crap.
lurk3141592653589793@reddit
Hahaha! Well put. Funny how prophetic this video turned out to be. No Doubt was so much more than Gwen. Too bad she didn't believe that.
TheUnknownStuntman51@reddit
She went from playing with Sublime, to spelling the word ‘bananas’ in a song.
Beatrix_Potter-Kiddo@reddit
Well, look how Sublime turned out
Ok_Stranger_9520@reddit
Haha it’s literally playing on the radio right now as I type, a classic.
epidemicsaints@reddit
The guitar solo sounds like Weather Channel music.

Gwen turned out to be such a fucking Poser!! 👎👎👎
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Wrote the lyrics to this song ans gave it to a boyfriend following a breakup. Embarrassing.
red286@reddit
Can't be any more embarrassing than having your ex-girlfriend write the song and then force you to play bass on it.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
I’m sure the money made it less embarrassing
klsi832@reddit
Kinda always knew I'd end up your ex-girlfriend
MartyFreeze@reddit
My ex gave me nothing else matters by Metallica, which one is worse?
fishboy3339@reddit
Blood on the ground- incubus.

Stevie-Rae-5@reddit
I loved that dress from the first time I saw this video! Still do.
swisszimgirl79@reddit
cleannc1@reddit
Posers.
General-Ad6459@reddit
The more I find out about her, the more my disappointment in her grows.
sugarcoatedpos@reddit
I remember my little brother swore she sang “nose bleed” instead of “don’t speak”.
Roklam@reddit
Well Holy Heck
This was the first glimmering of the transition to Ska/Punk for me.
Same_Soil7237@reddit
One of the first concerts I ever went to. No Doubt opening up for BUSH. 😎
SexyStayPuft@reddit
As a 14-year-old boy at that time, this was life-changing.
big_ringer@reddit
For a long time, I (along with other No Doubt fans) were wondering how Tony Kanal could dump a smokeshow like Gwen Stefani.
Seeing how she is now, we're all "OH! *That's why!"
Sunshineal@reddit
The drama behind this song was the talk of the lunch table.
-HHANZO-@reddit
Check out the little known original, I might like it better

NO NO NO NO NO THIS SONG IS NOT 30 YEARS OLD........

everything this video depicted, ended up happening.
FaceRockerMD@reddit
I remember how Inescapable this song was on the radio.
Cthulhus-Tailor@reddit
Funnily I knew a couple back then, in high school, who considered this their special song, which was odd since it was clearly about a relationship ending. They’re still together to this day.
Cthulhu_Dreams_@reddit
Man...I miss old Gwen...
VenusVignette@reddit
Ugh screw this song and Gwen Stefani.
rich101682@reddit
Missed it by a day. Came out 4/15

I dunno, The Impression that I Get being in like every movie trailer would like a word.
Rust_Bucket37@reddit
Imho I feel like the Bosstones were a better band and they lasted as a group longer.
windmillninja@reddit
Some of their best stuff came after their radio days. A Jackknife To A Swan is probably their best album IMO.
xt0rt@reddit
No way! Personally I'm a fan of their earlier stuff. Sucks Dickey turned out to be a nut job and broke them up.
Top_Client938@reddit
That’s valid
Darkhaven@reddit
Mambo #5 and Macarena thank you for taking the heat off of them!
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
How so?
Dry_Ass_P-word@reddit
I remember watching The Box back then (music video request channel) and the first week this came out it basically streamed back to back nonstop.
LaGorda54@reddit
Nah.
brokenman82@reddit
I hated no doubt back then too.
Sleepy_cheetah@reddit
She looks so beautiful in this video.
That song was on non-stop when I was 16.
espexporerguy@reddit
Man...
lola_raspberry@reddit
Gosh I cranked this banger in 5th grade. Dangit Tim 😭😭😭
Ok_Researcher_9796@reddit
Great song. Great Album. I was into a little darker stuff for my first break-up though. The album Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel by Stabbing Westward was on repeat for me for a long time after.

Tragic Kingdom No Doubt was the best No Doubt, No Doubt.
TheRoadkillRapunzel@reddit
It always bothered me that I couldn’t bring myself to like Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. I was into punk and ska when they were popular, her feminist message SHOULD have made me a fan.
Instead I felt like there was something about her that I really didn’t like but couldn’t put my finger on.
When I found out she was a gross conservative into Christianity and cultural appropriation, it was a revelation!
Trust your guts, people.
Cosmyra9x@reddit
I remember burning this onto a CD for my first real heartbreak. Pretty sure that CD is still buried somewhere in my parents' house next to my diary full of bad poetry. We really lived through the golden age of sad girl anthems.
vitaoptima@reddit
I first heard this song in a dream...it was the soundtrack to it. I woke up and it was playing on the radio.
BrianOconneR34@reddit
No doubt she’s a total magat religious fake loser now.
Onthemightof@reddit
This song was about a breakup? Lol. I never really pieces that together
nucl3ar0ne@reddit
For me your title is incredibly true.
Scalytor@reddit
This was especially true for me. Back in my teens I didn't stray from country music but my first girlfriend was a No Doubt mega fan. 30 years on and the first thing I think about when hearing this song is her.
No_Gap_2700@reddit
This song was written for the bass player, shown in the video here.
Huge-Gear3704@reddit
Holy hell I’m old. I was 16 that year and my friends and I played that song non stop
patchhappyhour@reddit
I remember when this video hit mtv and it was kind of a shock considering that it was so vastly different from Just a girl. 30 years ago explains why I got up this morning and there was an old man looking back at me in the mirror.
windmillninja@reddit
I've always said this is our generation's "The Chain".
wango_fandango@reddit
Loved this song as a teenager and anytime I hear it, it takes me right back to then.
bohdi2311@reddit
The absolute death grip this song had on MTV.
____AMOK____@reddit
Reminds me of the girl who took my virginity then left me for me “best friend”
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
I was 15 and single for another year or so. No breakups. Though I gave up on my pursuit of the girl I liked since we were in 2nd grade. We sort of dated around this time but I realized she wasn’t for me, not really a breakup though. I think.
iknowiknowwhereiam@reddit
Ugh I could not get away from this song, it was so overplayed
Ill-Percentage-3276@reddit
Felt so cool with Tragic Kingdom playing on my Discman.
