$44,800+ for the top of the line Yaris even after taxes is insane.
Very nice interior though

Welcome to Europe, cars are expensive here
JournalistExpress292@reddit
It’s unfortunate; has there been anything to make cars more friendly there? I know Germany has been fighting the EU right?
Europe is weird in that it has good public transportation but also restricts cars a lot … you would think with good public transportation - they now aren’t so car dependent so people now have freedom in the car market in what they want to buy and drive.
Recoil42@reddit (OP)
These two things are not in conflict.

I would argue that Japan doesn't deliberately make it difficult to own a car like Denmark or the Netherlands do. Like as long as you prove to the policeman that you have a big enough parking space, you can buy any car you want. And if you downsize to a kei car then you don't even need to ask the policeman to come measure your space.
Car ownership in Japan is more limited by geography than anything. It's a very crowded country with limited usable space that has a nationwide ban on street parking because the roads are also crowded and narrow. They don't aggressively design cities to deliberately restrict cars, that is just how Japanese cities are by necessity. But if you are in a situation where you can own a car, then there are surprisingly few official barriers or punitive taxes. A car is still a major responsibility that must be managed, but the messaging from the government is not "you should not own a car"
JournalistExpress292@reddit
Agreed, same with Singapore.
They have great public transportation, and car ownership is expensive but they don’t restrict too much beyond that.
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
I don't agree, Singapore does deliberately make cars extremely expensive and inconvenient whereas Japan doesn't really. The jidosha-zei is sort of treated as a bogeyman on the Internet, but consider that the tax on a 2004 Nissan Skyline with a VQ35 (large engine displacement + old car, basically a double whammy) is about ¥90,000. That's $577 USD.
Meanwhile in Singapore the annual COE and road tax is the equivalent of $12,000 USD per year, more than 20x as much. That's not just "more expensive", that's completely punitive.
Plus Singapore has a zero-growth policy, meaning there are a limited number of COEs, which possibly prevents you from getting a car in the first place. Then on top of that there is the additional registration fee when you first buy the car.
All in all, it's an extremely punitive environment for car owners. Personally I'd rather live in Japan, and not just because it's easier to buy and operate a car.

And that's fine because even if you can't afford a car, most of Europe has good affordable and accessible public transportation. Nothing like most of the US where owning a car is a necessity.
pointblankmos@reddit
"Most" of Europe being the big cities. 50% of Europeans didn't set foot on public transit last year. At least half of Europeans drive everywhere. More than America, certainly, but not most people.
ggtsu_00@reddit
I didnt say most Europeans need or use public transit, just that good and affordable public transit is available to most of Europe. The point being if you can't afford to own a car, you aren't crippled like you would be in most of the U.S. without a car.
Santa_Ricotta69@reddit
I would rather a car be a democratized necessity than a luxury
kimbabs@reddit
Agreed.
The priority should be giving people good alternate means of transportation. For many, many reasons, not everyone should need to drive, and for my own personal gripes, not everyone should be driving.
Avedas@reddit
If the "necessity" argument is to apply, it doesn't make sense to be looking at top trims or luxury models of anything. Nobody is debating between an S class vs. taking the bus.
But I agree that bottom tier vehicles need to be cheap in the US.
K_R_A_K_E_N-540@reddit
Well yes and no. A Model Y is cheaper than this
expertninja@reddit
Look at the decline in the dollar since Jan 2025 and get back to me
dissss0@reddit
Not in the UK
Silverado starts from £66k + VAT
Seeker80@reddit
Right, that's why items aren't priced by direct currency conversion.
The larger Corolla Cross Hybrid starts at $33,630, so do you really think the Yaris Cross Hybrid would be priced that way??

Americans discovering Europe for the first time: 🤯
JournalistExpress292@reddit
Ok
Recoil42@reddit (OP)
Good luck with that. GM left Europe about a decade ago because it couldn't compete.
Pseudonym_741@reddit
I remember when you could get a base model C-class for that kind of money. Now you get a shitty Yaris with black plastic fenders.

I can’t imagine how expensive in its luxury version LBX.
ishaansaral@reddit
Yeah cars are expensive in Europe, but the pricing for the Yaris Cross also overlaps with their other offerings, which makes it less appealing. Can get the Corolla hatch for similar pricing, the Corolla Touring or Cross for a bit more, or the CH-R. And you wouldn't have to deal with having a vehicle on the cheap and tinny Yaris platform and being as dangerously slow.
SignificantBoxed@reddit
I do like that interior. Wonder if it hints at what the GR levels are could look like in the future.
PNF2187@reddit
I like the layout, and it does integrate the larger screens better than on the Corolla, but I'd imagine future Toyotas are going to have interiors that more closely resemble the new RAV4 and Highlander since the Yaris Cross is still using the older infotainment setup.
JournalistExpress292@reddit
Maybe, I love that it has a HUD. It’s a mandatory thing for me, never owned a car without a HUD.
DaBanninator@reddit
🤣 Yaris cross? Seriously? Did it die for your sins or something? Next they're going to try to sell a Corolla cross or other retarded cross pos.
ab_90@reddit
Yes there’s Corolla cross
ry1701@reddit
Isn't this just a Mazda2 clone?
Blyatskinator@reddit
Lmao it’s the other way around…
Recoil42@reddit (OP)
Nope.
nissanfan64@reddit
Wish I could buy that in the US. I loved the Yaris and am looking for a used one. Little beater cars are great.
turboash78@reddit
Just what the world needs! Another tall hatchback with 1/10 the storage space of a sedan!
