WinAmp still exists

Didn't expect to find them still around.
I doubt they're the same WinAmp many of us so fondly remember.
For those of us in college at the time, who remembers finding a skin for your school?
If you have a moment, head over to WinAmp Skin Museum and take a stroll down memory lane.

Does it still whip the llama's ass?

that poor llama

My dad got so pissed at me when he heard that for the first time. He was fully convinced I hacked the computer somehow.
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
Not according to the reviews in the App Store.
ChickenArise@reddit
Yeah it's not even really related to the original software. It's just the IP after multiple sales.
AnySortOfPerson@reddit
Very relevant.
nucl3ar0ne@reddit
Came here to post this.

Asking the important questions here.
bkwrm79@reddit
I don't even listen to much music, but I miss WinAmp. I remember being so outraged when I first had to use something else that it ignored my folder structure and wanted me to reorganize all my music from scratch. It WAS and IS organized! In folders! The way the Computing Gods intended!
HeywoodJaBlessMe@reddit
IIRC, Winamp devs sold Winamp and moved on to the amazing Reaper.fm
SyrioForel@reddit
I liked Reaper when I was younger, and it’s a good starter DAW because it’s basically shareware and free to download. But, in my opinion, you really can’t beat Cubase in terms of features and usability.
jtho78@reddit
I've been using NullPlayer on my mac. It works with old Winamp skins and plays from my media server
EvanTurningTheCorner@reddit
How do you make the winamp skins work in nullplayer? Winamp skins are .wsz and null is .nsz
Former-Citron-7676@reddit
Holy shit, they have all the skins I ever made and published in their archive. Trip down memory lane 🥹
dodge_viper@reddit
I was listening to a concert on the Internet Archive yesterday and they have an option to visualize it using the old (~2003) version of Winamp I used in college.
Zilch1979@reddit
Geiss? That shit was awesome.
mjdubs@reddit
+1 for milkdrop
nefastvs@reddit
MILKDROP!!!
dodge_viper@reddit
I forgot all about that! This version is just the player with different skins, then one visualizer. I can't find the Geiss effect though.
mjdubs@reddit
I still run version 5.666, it's the best build. Any updates beyond that are crap.
I remember trying iTunes in like 2007 and being disgusted. Winamp's drag and drop Playlist building will never get old for me.
wazacraft@reddit
Ok but how much time did you spend looking for the perfect skin?
mjdubs@reddit
Lol back in 1999? Hours. Now I'm just in classic.
a_seventh_knot@reddit
I made my own
hjeff51@reddit
Still using version 5.666. Pretty sure it was final release (from AOL). It amazes me. They sold Winamp to AOL. And one of the original guys went on to create the digital audio workstation Reaper which i use about 12 hours a day.
Common_Juggernaut724@reddit
I came just to point out the Reaper connection. Awesome software.
hjeff51@reddit
It's great. I only touch Pro Tools now to export audio to work on in Reaper (what a fucking PAIN it is to do that. In Reaper? Effortless) or to open an OMF. Personal license is only 70$. I've had to pay that twice. The first time I got 7 years worth of updates.
Dekuip_bcn@reddit
I recently downloaded it in my new laptop. It’s my comfort app

v2.95 for life
RoyalZeal@reddit
I never stopped using it. It does what I need to do, it has an insanely low system footprint and I can count the number of times it's crashed since the late 90s on one hand. It very much whips the llama's ass.
hjeff51@reddit
Once they incorporated a media library, I never need another media player.
theBloodShed@reddit
Same. There was never any reason to switch. It’s still more feature rich, stable, and flexible than the competition.
CertifiedBA@reddit
I still use it to play some files Foobar doesn't seem to support with my audio card settings.
firesticks@reddit
The way this headline made me immediately picture my favourite skins.

It’s insane that I have a physical reaction to that website. Like in my bones. Maybe time travel is real.

I still use it to listen to SNES Chiptunes.
🧉🦄👌🏽
Occams_AK47@reddit
Audio Galaxy (then Napster) and Winamp were like peanut butter and jelly.
Years later, my best friend worked on the team until AOL sold it.
regeya@reddit
When I switched to Linux, I used the Winamp clone XMMS for years. It was forked as a project named Audacity when XMMS decided they really needed to be a headless music server. Still supports Winamp skins.

limelight022@reddit
I use it all the time!
anxiousnl@reddit
I take some light shit from people time to time for still using it but I've had no reason to change honestly.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Is it still redundant?
