Honestly, it feels like slopaware.
SufficientPie@reddit
Wish they would just focus their limited resources on maintaining a highly-customizable Firefox
GravitasIsOverrated@reddit
Which is a slowly dying product. Don’t get me wrong, I love and use Firefox but it basically only exists because Google deliberately overpays for search placement so antitrust regulators don’t get spooked by them maintaining the only browser engine on windows (I know it isn’t actually, but from a regulatory standpoint…). What features could you add to Firefox to reverse that? I’m not sure any exist. I see tech-oriented people suggest new tech-oriented features, but Firefox already wins there, I can’t see how winning harder would change anything.
So as Mozilla leadership, you’ve got two options: ride the sinking ship down and pray Google never gets bold enough to play hardball with search sponsorship (which will immediately kill your company) or attempt to diversify, finding a side revenue stream that aligns with your core mission. They’re doing the latter here.
SufficientPie@reddit
Which is why they should focus on Firefox and returning it to the customizable browser it used to be and stop turning it into a Chrome clone.
GravitasIsOverrated@reddit
What customization feature would win over users that Firefox doesn’t already have? Firefox is already/still more customizable and more private than Chrome, they’re already winning in that department - yet people don’t switch.
SufficientPie@reddit
Were you around when Firefox was actually customizable using XUL extensions etc? Not Chrome add-ons
srona22@reddit
They miss their chance with RockyLLaMa.
Sabin_Stargem@reddit
They should name it after a critter. We already got a Firefox and a Thunderbird. Probably should be a Snowfish or something, to widen the elemental chart.
kulchacop@reddit
Airdog?
Lakesnake?
Plasmabear?
ChocomelP@reddit
Icehorse
Kahvana@reddit
Lakesnake is a clear winner, take my upvote!
LUV_2_BEAT_MY_MEAT@reddit
It is wild that with a org with so few offerings two of them are so closely named that they could regularly be misheard as the other one
Mozilla Thunderbolt Mozilla Thunderbird
H47@reddit
Waterfish
Radium@reddit
Yeah but thunderbolt fits for all the energy required to run 'em
Crampappydime@reddit
Agreed, This is actually such a massive miss in branding, wow
TyGirium@reddit
Also Thunderbolt is a name of a connector type
MrAHMED42069@reddit
When's the avatar coming
RoomyRoots@reddit
Sky Fish as an indirect reference to the babel fish.
PhlarnogularMaqulezi@reddit
Totally agree.
Like, I know alt offshoots of Firefox like Iceraven and Waterfox exist, but I could get behind a Snowsalmon
Paradigmind@reddit
How about an Earth Angel?
AurumDaemonHD@reddit
But the question is will it blend(run locally)
" Automate workflows and recurring tasks: Generate daily briefings, monitor topics, compile reports, or trigger actions based on events and schedules"
Okay. Can i trust it with my data?
"- Maintain security with self-hosted deployment, optional end-to-end encryption, and device-level access controls"
Hmm
ai_hedge_fund@reddit
Here's what is and is not local:
https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbolt/blob/main/docs/architecture.md
colin_colout@reddit
Huh? It's local unless I'm missing something. I haven't tried yet though.
equipmentmobbingthro@reddit
What is the problem if I can self-host the server component?
ai_hedge_fund@reddit
There is no problem!
macboller@reddit
boooooooo
wombweed@reddit
From TFA:
AurumDaemonHD@reddit
Yeah i edited my post sry that was sloppy pasting.
mr_zerolith@reddit
Can't wait to try it, a big problem with this category of software is, it's either:
- free but multiple things are broken or missing ( with few exceptions )
- free but sketchy, privacy wise and/or tries to push you into using commercial models
- paid but won't work with local models
JamesEvoAI@reddit
Mozilla does more shit nobody asked for in a way that is worse than the existing work instead of putting more engineers on Firefox. More at 11.
Cool-Chemical-5629@reddit
Currently enterprise only and not fully local yet.
Waarheid@reddit
I find it funny that the article focuses so much on the Thunderbolt name overloading, presumably from Apple's Thunderbolt connector. You know, the cable. I don't think anyone will mix those up.
Creepy-Bell-4527@reddit
Thunderbolt is an Intel spec.
Paradigmind@reddit
I find it kinda uninspired and stupid aswell. Why call everything Thunder, Bolt and Bird?
Waarheid@reddit
Yea, it is uninspired for sure. They should've done another natural phenomenon + animal combo. I can't come up with any that don't sound dumb though.
"Firefox" works great, "thunderbird" was okay. Water is already taken by waterfox, and I think there's also an iceweasel? Gemma E4B suggested a bunch, "Cometlynx" was not terrible.
shaolinmaru@reddit
Earthworm (Jim)
Waarheid@reddit
Lol, that's a good one.
lakotajames@reddit
Earthferret.
Ferilox@reddit
i think it was because of the thunder*. mozilla already had thunderbird
Waarheid@reddit
Oh. Yeah, that is a good point. RIP.
thatphotoguy89@reddit
I cannot find any information about Mozilla Thunderbolt except the suspicious link in the linked article. I’m going to guess this is a made-up article
Xamanthas@reddit
You shouldn’t be on the net sonny, let grandpa here continue using it
HopePupal@reddit
clicked a few links, the absence of news from Mozilla's socials was weird, but code for Thunderbolt is under https://github.com/Thunderbird/thunderbolt which is part of the verified Mozilla Thunderbird org. chalking this one up to Moz being sloppy rather than a scam
fucking awful name though, going to make a bunch of Mac users mad
thatphotoguy89@reddit
Thanks for the link! This is really shocking marketing from Mozilla 🤦♂️
Upset_Ant2834@reddit
I imagine it's because they don't want to shout it from the rooftops when it's so new and most likely to have major issues. They'll probably announce it properly once it's actually ready for the influx of users

cunasmoker69420@reddit
Phoronix is a legitimate website
MrHaxx1@reddit
For whoever wants to try this and build it themselves, add "VITE_BYPASS_WAITLIST=true" to the env
They actually putting a self-compiled open source app behind a waitlist
What the fuck is Mozilla doing?
rothific@reddit
This is intentional and documented: VITE_BYPASS_WAITLIST is only for the hosted version. You can just set it to true.
ryanleesipes@reddit
That variable should be false anyway. The waitlist was only intended for our own hosted instance.
Mickenfox@reddit
Will they abandon it after a few years like all their other projects?
OkProMoe@reddit
You know what? At least it wasn’t yet another unwanted shitty cloud offering addition to Firefox.
