What coffee do I get if I don't drink coffee?

I don't drink coffee, but some people that come to my house do. They could be normal guests, the occasional tradesfolk, that kind of thing.
What's the best "universal" instant coffee that people would think is "good enough"?
dylacomp@reddit
I just have a cupboard full of nicked sachets from hotels tbh
Long-Woodpecker-1980@reddit
This is clever. They probably last much longer than any other suggestion here
Pengetalia@reddit
We usually empty the hotel room tea and coffee things and stash them in a drawer at home.

My usual used to be Nescafé Azera Americano Intense. We switched over to Morrions own brand micro ground one a few months ago and its really nice Heres the link to it
Skittlit@reddit
Coffee bags, work like tea bags. Better shelf life probably
SignificantIsopod797@reddit
Get coffee bags that are individually sealed. Taylor’s is pretty good. And that way you’ve got great coffee that doesn’t go off
BlackberryDramatic24@reddit
Camp coffee- they won’t ask for coffee from you again.

Mellow Birds!
JoeyJoJoeJr_Shabadoo@reddit
The Alcafé from Aldi is a convincing Nescafe Azera knock-off at a fraction of the price. I'd get that.
mcglash@reddit
This. We call iit AlJazeera.
signpostlake@reddit
Aldi honestly does some great instant coffee. I'm surprised it's as cheap as it is
LondonCollector@reddit
A lot of their products are as good or better than name brand.
Their chocolate buttons are significantly better than the crap cadburys pump out now
On-Mute@reddit
Yeah, the freeze dried Columbian stuff is really good for instant.
signpostlake@reddit
Costa Rica one is really good too
epimelide@reddit
Don’t know if it’s discontinued but it has not been available for some time
On-Mute@reddit
Packaging change maybe or local issue ? I have a jar that can't be more than a month or so old.
GroupApprehensive978@reddit
85p for 8 or 9 sachets of caramel latte. I bloody love them.
Cuznatch@reddit
Yep. Also if you can spare the space, keep it in the fridge too stop it forming a brick for longer.
When you're making it, if they have it white, put the powder in with a dash of milk, and stir it up into a paste, then add the hot water and more milk if needed. It makes it much nicer than just adding hot water to the coffee. If they like it black you can do the same with cold water.
Obviously it's a bit more time consuming so you don't need to do it for everyone, but at the very least I do it this way for family if I'm not making a proper coffee (ie. I keep a jar of decaf instant as my mum has decaf in the evenings).

phatboi23@reddit
their grounds trough an aeropress are decent too :D
WhiteDiamondK@reddit
I recently purchased actual Azera and have gotten so used to the taste of the Aldi and Lidl knock-offs that I don’t like Azera any more.
I drink filter coffee, but have fake-Azera as a back up/when I’m travelling and it honestly hits the spot for me.
It should’ve noted that it also tastes good black, which most freeze-dried instants don’t.
Cazspresso@reddit
100% this! As a fussy ex barista, this is the best instant coffee I’ve tried.
Sure-Butterscotch290@reddit
M&S coffee bags are pretty nice, I take them when I go camping. Instant coffee can go hard if it’s not used a lot and think there’s 10 bags in the box for a couple of quid
HorrorAccomplished78@reddit
I believe after you’ve tasted real freshly made coffee there’s no good instant coffee. You may get to like real coffee if you buy real coffee beans and a cafetière . I never thought I would but bought beans and a Lidl grinder and made fresh coffee. For convenience one can get the same beans already ground. Start with a low number like a 3 strength. You will be stunned at the difference in taste from the instant rubbish. I use a strength 3 decaffeinated Colombian Arabica from Marks and Spencer. Never used any instant coffee since then. Guests love it too. Look after your guests and tradespeople.
sosig_roll@reddit
Instead of instant consider coffee bags (like tea bags but for coffee). More tasty and will stay fresh as they each come sealed.
kool_kats_rule@reddit
Yeah, coffee bags are the best option for really occasional coffee drinkers. Way better than most instant, too.
Gryeg@reddit
This ^ I don't drink coffee either but have coffee bags in case someone wants one
jingleson@reddit
Buy some individual sachets z won't go stale then
TheNinjaPixie@reddit
Unless you have a regular turnover of folks using the instant just don't bother. I drink tea and i just offer tea. I used to have the instant but so few wanted that it just went hard and in the bin. Most people will be ok with a cuppa tea.
TSotP@reddit
Any of the market leaders will do.
Kenco or Nescafé.
The one with the red cap.
kalendral_42@reddit
Nescafé gold blend is a pretty standard coffee if you’re not sure of what people like/not big on coffee yourself
RealLongwayround@reddit
Get an Aeropress and some ground coffee. Store the ground coffee in a freezer. Instant coffee is horrible stuff.
Formal-Proposal7850@reddit
Doesn’t even need to be an aeropress. Just a regular French press. You can pick them up cheaply at many stores or a charity shop.
And then, yes, ground coffee goes in freezer.
Get instant coffee only if you don’t like your guests and don’t want your tradies to come back
RealLongwayround@reddit
Absolutely.
Sharp_Budget_4416@reddit
Nescafé Gold Blend in the smallest jar they sell. Nobody's ever complained and if it goes solid before you finish it you've barely wasted anything.
spoo4brains@reddit
I like Sainsburys Gold Roast.
Grimreaper9972@reddit
Anything with Gold in the name even the discount/cheaper stuff is normally a goor thing to have , though if you are close enough tell em to bring their own my best friend doesnt drink coffee but i buy a jar pf coffee for me to have at theirs 🤣🤣🤣
Heathy-Heatherson@reddit
Nescafe gold blend.
DjurasStakeDriver@reddit
I don't know about your guests, but most people I know (myself included) who like coffee do not like instant coffee. It tastes terrible and it goes off quickly if youre not usuing it regularly. You could get a cheap cafetiere and a bag of ground coffee that you can keep in the freezer for months.
Dazzling-Wanderer@reddit
Not going to lie, if I go to someone's house and they only have instant - I'll have a cup of tea.
DjurasStakeDriver@reddit
Same really. Those are the two options where I work, so I take my own coffee or drink tea.
Fioreborn@reddit
Small jar of normal Nescafé.
Nothing fancy.
Ub3r_Bland@reddit
You can get sachets of cappuccino etc that keep fresh and done get the stale taste that open cans of instant coffee can get. I can’t say they are fabulous but they’d likely be ok.
French press cafetiere are small cheap and easy to use with whatever ground coffee is available - a small box would stay fresh till you needed it.
If you’re looking at a large group for a party of something honestly see if you can borrow someone’s pod coffee machine or filter coffee maker.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
I get Sainsbury's or Tesco's with packaging similar to Gold Blend. It's fine. Aldi's own instant coffee is one of their few fails.
2000andmark@reddit
Damn, get something vaguely Italian or actual Italian coffee. Will suffice in most cases guaranteed
Nice to have something like creamer too. Some people prefer lighter coffee.
txteva@reddit
Found the lost American.
Long-Woodpecker-1980@reddit
Creamer isn't a thing in the UK
sparklybeast@reddit
That’s what milk’s for?
ccinosauce@reddit
Your best bet is freeze dried coffee. It lasts longer
Playful_Beyond_2218@reddit
Moreish coffee bags on Amazon! They are the cheapest good quality ones I’ve found. Or if it’s only very rare visits then the individually packaged ones from Taylor’s or similar. You just use them like tea bags but it’s way better than instant coffee
underwater-sunlight@reddit
Ask a few of your coffee drinking friends what they normally choose. Personally, unless it was frequent, regular visitors, i would go for something cheap and generic.
My dad, who likes coffee and used to buy a lot of different beans and grind his own blends many moons ago regularly drinks escape purely because it comes in the massive catering tins from the cash and carry whenever someone takes him. My wife, who typically has a solitary coffee in the morning likes douwe egberts and prefers a medium roast over a darker one
DaveL16@reddit
If it’s not for you and you’re not looking to impress then any old shit will do. Or red Nescafé isn’t that bad.
merryman1@reddit
Nescafé Azera Americano Intense is my go-to. Really good cup of coffee for instant and has an amazing nutty taste to it.
Honestly the instant tin that actually got me in to drinking coffee, could never stand normal instant granules.
It is a bit expensive though so maybe not quite in the "good enough" category lol.
Coffee is like that though there isn't really a mediocre coffee imo. Its either so good you're immediately wanting a 2nd cup, or bad enough you finish the first and can already feel the stomach and headache building.
Serene_sloth@reddit
Nescafé Azera. They have a couple of varieties, Americano Intenso is quite strong (for instant) so the standard Americano probably has the broadest appeal.
thereisalwaysrescue@reddit
That Azera stuff!
Shot-Performance-494@reddit
Get a nespresso machine
signpostlake@reddit
Seems pointless dropping a hundred quid on a coffee machine if you don't drink coffee and just want a jar of something in the cupboard for visitors
Shot-Performance-494@reddit
Instant coffee is awful
No-Door-3181@reddit
Why would someone who doesn’t drink coffee get a nespresso machine for guests 😭 let’s be fr
NotAProperAccount3@reddit
Tbf I don't know why anyone who actually like coffee gets a nespresso machine.
(I am a coffee snob and am willing to accept I have a problem... I slightly expensive problem... Not as expensive as smoking/alcoholism/gambling though, so I'll take it).
Rubberfootman@reddit
Whatever you get, get a small jar. If you don’t use it very often it goes rock solid eventually.
ukslim@reddit
It becomes horrible long before it solidifies.
And if you don't like coffee, presumably you won't recognise the horribleness. But your guests will.
Assume if it's been open for more than two months, it should be thrown away.
redunculuspanda@reddit
yep instant coffee is shit, but stale instant coffee is undrinkable. Maybe even better than a small jar, pinch some of those single serve sachets from every hotel you stay at.
Ivanzypher1@reddit
Some of the answers here are crazy, no need to buy a brewer solely for guests. Honestly just buy some instant stuff. You won't please a proper coffee snob unless you are familiar with your brewer, have dialled in your process, and are using fresh ground beans anyway. Way too big an investment for a non-drinker. And instant will do fine for most people, who don't really care about quality coffee in the first place.
Instant all tastes like butts, so brand doesn't matter too much. Just buy whatever the shop has on sale from a brand you have heard of; Nescafe, Douwe Egberts or whatever. No one is expecting a quality brew as a guest.
epimelide@reddit
I tried GRIND in the sale, it’s almost as good as normal coffee. I even got the decaf, microwave myself a cup of milk and have a evening latte 8/10
Zubi_Q@reddit
Instant coffee
LungHeadZ@reddit
Little expensive but honestly the best in my humble opinion.
No_Ring_3348@reddit
"I don't drink coffee, sorry" covers it.
O_C_Demon@reddit
Mellow birds. It'll make the "tradesfolk" smile.....
sixe6throwaway@reddit
You can get sachets of instant coffee. I’d buy something like that. Quantity is already measured, just add hot water. I like kenco sachets.
Fun-Opportunity9656@reddit
L'Or Intense.
Wormwolf-Prime@reddit
If you don't drink it yourself and it's going to be used infrequently I'd stay away from instant and maybe some coffee bags, they keep (and taste) better
OldManChino@reddit
If you can get Grind coffee in instant round your way, go with that. All other instants taste like absolute swill afterwards. It's more on the spenny side, but if it's for guests then it will last
2c0@reddit
Anything within budget, if it's free they likely won't complain. If they do, you explain you don't drink it and you only get it for occasional visitors.
Ralphisinthehouse@reddit
illy instant coffee or Nescafe Azera are pretty good
Th3-Sh1kar1@reddit
Azera was really the first freeze dried coffee to actually taste reminiscent of coffee
Pachyderminthegaff@reddit
Yup they'd be my choices too. Best of a bad bunch.
alice_op@reddit
Douwe Egberts gold
SkeletorOnLSD@reddit
This is my go to now. I do like the dark as well
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
Alice knows what's up
EffDubya@reddit
I am a huge coffee snob, and honestly Nescafé Azera with full cream milk is a decent stand-in. I’d get that.
Bear in mind though that it has a shorter shelf life than you might expect, especially once it is open. You can’t leave it for weeks and expect it to still be fine!
srm79@reddit
Kenco Rich, use two spoons of that with 3 spoons of coffee mate and a splash of skimmed milk - best cup of coffee ever
KingForceHundred@reddit
Get a bottle of Camp Coffee.
El_Shaw@reddit
I don't drink instant coffee as I use a Moka pot but I always thought Azera was decent.
PartyPoison98@reddit
Gold or Nescafe Azera for instant
Prestigious-Salt-245@reddit
A jar of instant will go stale if only used occasionality. I suggest collecting those little complimentary single-use Nescafe sachets from various places.
a-punk-is-for-life@reddit
I do that. If I stay in a hotel I lift some sachets, that's my coffee for guests!
happybaby00@reddit
For instant, get a gold coffee.
For a brewing tool like a french press, get grade 3 Colombian/house ground coffee
OkayEffectively@reddit
Little’s is the best instant coffee I’ve tasted. It is fantastic.
dbxp@reddit
If you want something cheap in the cupboard then get Aldi or Lidl's own brand single origin. It comes in a small jar, relatively cheap and doesn't just taste of brown.
AnneKnightley@reddit
Honestly I like supermarket branded instant.
wongl888@reddit
Best to ask your guest as there really isn’t universal brand of coffee for everyone.
astralwisdom7@reddit
Nescafé espresso
crithitledge@reddit
Anything with "gold" in the name is usually fine for instant drinkers. The problem is instant coffee does actually get stale fairly quickly if you dont drink it. I would see if you can get some sachets of Nescafe Gold or something like that so it lasts a lot longer!
jesuisnick@reddit
I don't drink instant coffee but I have it in for visitors. I have Lidl's Gold coffee at the moment and I have had lots of compliments on it!
benistowninspector@reddit
Before i moved over to using a french press, I used to buy "Douwe Egberts Pure Gold Medium Roast". Pretty good but also not breaking the bank
Dutch_Slim@reddit
Especially when my local Tesco were selling off their stock at £8 and the other nearby Tesco still had them at £16…
G7VFY@reddit
Buy two small jars of the best instant coffee you can buy. One regular and the other, decaffeinated.
If you want offer decent coffee, buy filter coffee and a cafetiere
NrthnLd75@reddit
Mellow Birds.
teddycatcat@reddit
That'll make me smile
nosajn@reddit
Don't be so cruel!
_Yorkshire_Pirlo@reddit
The lidl own brand americano instant coffee is decent and very well priced.
