They had the perfect title and they blew it.
Well…still glad we’re getting the film at all.
nr1988@reddit
The fact that Rick Moranis is coming back for this and that Mel Brooks is still involved is all the confidence I need to watch this in theaters when it comes out.
LeftOn4ya@reddit
Somehow Rick Moranis returned.

You know they are going to reference this, would not be surprised to hear “somehow Dark Helmet returned” or something similar.

So a whole bunch of actors found out it was much less taxing than do voice work for like same pay so opted out of on screen roles.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
I just hope Mel lives to see it released. He's 99 years old.
flowerodell@reddit
Yeah, the fact that we’re over a year out from lease makes me wonder why they’re not trying to get it done a little quicker.
Max_W_@reddit
And he looked pretty good in the promo.

I read this as he looked pretty good in the porno.

I don’t want to either. That’s why I was glad someone said he was looking good in it. I was off the hook.

Okay, yes. promo.
FungiStudent@reddit
Mentholated eye drops? That sounds like torture.

Japanese "hard mint" eyedrops. After the first 10 seconds of pain, it's very refreshing. The blue one in the middle, Rohto Ice, was my favorite, but it's been rebranded as "all-in-one" and I heard, made less strong.
The one on the left, I can't even remember what that is. It's probably not made anymore, that bottle is, like, 25 years old.

I didn't want to watch History Part 2 at first because I was afraid how Mel's scenes would make it to the screen, and the Lincoln comment about his head as he walked out of the scene was all the reassurance I needed. Now I have the gut feeling that everyone involved understands the assignment and keeps the legacy going.
TonkaLowby@reddit
Yeh but he said he FOUND the money! It was in his basement.

It was originally a throwaway reference to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock so I understand why they changed it, but still think people would have gotten a kick out of the self-aware title.
stavago@reddit
PackageNorth8984@reddit
Are you trying to name this yourself by going over Mel’s helmet?

Vern1138@reddit
I remember watching some of it. It had 8 episodes, and I think I got through the first two, maybe part of the third before I just gave up.
It was woefully apparent that Mel had almost nothing to do with it.
guyako@reddit
That’s exactly what happened. Mel was a producer, which meant he supervised things. Maybe made some script and edit suggestions, but was not as involved as a writer or director would be.
Acceptingoptimist@reddit
It doesn't even mean that necessarily anymoree. It's become nearly meaningless. Producer can be given as a title for ego. A lot of actors are insisting they be listed as such anytime they are in something. It used to be a job, then it was a way to get a cut of the box-office or infer creative input. Now it's just whatever.
MmmSteaky@reddit
*imply
Mindless-Stuff2771k@reddit
It's about residuals. Under SAG and other movie union and contract rules, getting listed as a Producer adds a point or two to your residual percentages. If you are an actor or own an IP that someone really wants ... Getting a producer credit is additional financial gravy.. And actually "Production" doesn't require any specific work, or more work (for actors, writers, etc) on the project itself.
BeardiusMaximus7@reddit
Mel was credited as a producer, narrator, and as a writer.
There were a TON of writers on this thing, including folks who were actually in the episodes, like Wanda Sykes and Nick Kroll - and according to IMDB every one of the writers wrote on all 8 episodes, so there's that, too.
I agree, it was a huge letdown. I am also hoping Space Balls return doesn't have the same tone.
regular_john2017@reddit

i am VERY CONCERNED about this. Hollywood's knee jerk reactions to today's culture of sensitivity and offense to just about everything are going to poke a lot of holes in a Mel Brooks comedy here in 2026.
SyrioForel@reddit
Spaceballs is rated PG, it’s a silly comedy with mostly children-friendly jokes. It’s not “Kill Tony”, it doesn’t need to have any edgy humor.
cellshock7@reddit
Tell me you've never seen the movie Spaceballs without telling me you've never seen the movie Spaceballs lol. There's a scene where they compare lightsabers like they're their dicks for crying out loud, definitely not PG.
80's movies pushed the boundaries of PG just like modern movies push the boundaries of PG-13 (which btw was created only 3 years before this movie came out).

It's fine that they came up with a new joke.
StellarSloth@reddit
Would have lolled if they called it “The Schwartz Awakens”
regeya@reddit
Thinking back on it, it's kinda funny that when Spaceballs came out in 1987, one criticism I heard about it was that it was a little late to be doing Star Wars parodies. And here it is, nearly 40 years later, and Disney is cranking out Star Wars content like crazy, and Star Trek...well, okay, the just shut down again, but just now, during the 60th anniversary.
GuySmiley369@reddit
What just shut down again?
Imaginary_Scene2493@reddit
Star Trek. Paramount’s new owner doesn’t like the production company that has had the exclusive license to make new Star Trek projects for the past decade, and the contract runs out at the end of this year, so everything that’s not already filmed is canceled. There’s still 2.5 seasons filmed and going through post-production while they decide on a future direction.
GuySmiley369@reddit
WTF?! I don’t care about much of the other crap that they’ve come out with, but Strange New Worlds is awesome. I’ll be sad if they don’t find a way to save that.
Imaginary_Scene2493@reddit
SNW was planned as 5 seasons, and they’re ending up with 4.5. The last season and a half have already filmed.
GuySmiley369@reddit
Well, losing half a season sucks, but at least they are getting most of it. I’ve tried to watch all of the new stuff and so far SNW was the only thing I really enjoyed.
Imaginary_Scene2493@reddit
I’m glad they got enough notice to write the half season as a send off.
Star Fleet Academy is going to end at season 2, and there are hints from producer interviews that it will end with loose threads if not an outright cliffhanger.
Did you try Lower Decks and Prodigy? Both are animated but pretty well regarded by much of the fanbase compared to Discovery and Academy.
GuySmiley369@reddit
I thought lower decks was funny, and could watch it for the humor. But animated doesn’t really do it for me, not when I am trying to watch sci-fi at least.
duckswtfpwn@reddit
Absolutely love Strange New Worlds. I don't know why, but it truly feels like authentic Star Trek, but what do I know? I'm not a Trekkie, but I enjoyed the OG Movies, Next Generation, and the new reboot movies. Well 3rd one was kinda eh, but I was still was entertained.
regeya@reddit
I was a bigger fan of Trek than of Star Wars when I was a kid, not even lying. I know people criticize the current NCC-1701 for being spacious but to me it's a love letter to all of Star Trek. The interior takes cues from the NX-01 on the prequel Enterprise, the engine room is is like a gigantic version of the TOS engine room, and the bridge is a mix of TOS, 2009, and the TOS movies. As Gene Roddenberry said of Klingons in The Motion Picture, it looks different because they have money to do it right now.
djsynrgy@reddit
The rumors I'm seeing suggest that they're pushing for (tentatively titled) Star Trek: Year One; a spin-off from Strange New Worlds, following that series' version of the TOS characters after Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise.
I'd definitely be down for that.
I'd also be cool with another movie or three from the Kelvinverse. The casting/chemistry in those does a lot to make up for where the plots fall short, IMHO.
Imaginary_Scene2493@reddit
Supposedly Year One is not happening because they’re already auctioning off parts of the SNW and SFA sets.
There is a movie script being written, though I think they are avoiding the Kelvinverse due to actor availability: https://deadline.com/2025/11/star-trek-movie-jonathan-goldstein-john-francis-daley-1236616716/

Isn't Mel Brooks just acting, and probably executive producer? He's close to 100 years old, so it's not like he's going to be super hands on with the project. There was also that really crappy Spaceballs animated series, which feels even more irrelevant with Futurama existing already. For what should be an easy excuse to spoof the JJ Abrams Star Wars and throw in some jabs at modern Star Trek, it'll probably be more in line with the Scary Movie franchise, with dumb dick and balls jokes.

Personally, I think it should be named "Spaceballs VII" with no context whatsoever
Platt_Mallar@reddit
That's the exact title my wife suggested.
SpaceLemur34@reddit
Did you watch the video? He found the money. It was in the basement.
burger-breath@reddit
Title is excellent, a nod to the Star Wars and other sequels re-hashing everything to death to be "safe" and ...get more money
I_Died_Once@reddit
I think they should have done Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2
Then, you could have inserted a whole new cast, characters, and it would have fit the entire narrative perfectly
Rare-Boss2640@reddit
Although, i literally just called it “the new one” aloud before reading f the post
Omega_Boost24@reddit
Oh god hes's great!
THE NEW ONE it is for me!

His explanation and the humor of it are right on brand.

Mongo is appalled!

It better not turn out crap. I am so sick of remakes that are either crap or you are just seeing same jokes with new actors.
And I think it will turn out crap because the things that made Nell brooks funny are shunned by society now. Even though people laugh. They just hate themselves for finding it funny.
Procrasturbating@reddit
This movie could be one of the greatest letdowns or greatest comedic achievements in history. I can’t wait either way!
Mcdiglingdunker@reddit
Very excited, I can't wait to see the new merch as I missed out on the talking Yogurt doll the last go round.
Dicky_Penisburg@reddit
I'm still pissed about the flamethrower

I am beyond chuffed that Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement for this movie!! You bet your ass I’ll be there opening night, I’ll probably watch it multiple times that first weekend.
Spaceballs was a cornerstone of my childhood, this is the sequel I have been most excited for in decades
TootyMcFarts@reddit
They butchered the title
chypie2@reddit
Dude, rick Moranis came out of retirement for it WE MUST
Max_W_@reddit
Oh, we will. And we'll bring our kids with us.
PackageNorth8984@reddit
At least the next one can be called Spaceballs 3…thousand!
Steeleface@reddit
Didn’t you see the announcement? Mel found Spaceballs: The Money!

Spaceballs: The movie that's only funny (and even then only slightly) if you're stoned off your ass
Fixed it.
BalrogRuthenburg11@reddit
Someone should fix you.
upvotesforkitties@reddit
Completely unwatchable!
SteveEcks@reddit
I always thought it should've been "Spaceballs 3: the search for Spaceballs 2"
LetWaltCook@reddit
Well named. I'm already sure it's not going to flop and I've seen nothing else about it.
kid_entropy@reddit
I vaguely recall years ago hearing that they considered naming the sequel Space Balls 3: The Search For Two
Brent_L@reddit
Caseington@reddit
I would’ve preferred Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2
Bushwazi@reddit
SPACEBALLS SPACEBALLS: The New One (Episode 4) SPACEBALLS: That Writes The Checks (Episode 7) SPACEBALLS: And We Cash Them (Episode 17)
burnitdwn@reddit
Hopefully they fix the title on the dvd/bluray release
deowolf@reddit
I wanna say it can't be worse than History of the World Part 2, but I've been hurt before.
Jfonzy@reddit
It’s because Mel found it!
wicker_basket_1988@reddit
This is what happens when a guy that voices an animated snowman decides to create a sequel to a Mel Brooks film.

Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money
joejackson62@reddit
It wouldn't shock me if there was some kind of studio interference about using the "search for more money" name, saying it's not in good taste or something lame like that.
Remy0507@reddit
He explained it though! He found the money...it was in his basement!
