Has anyone’s flights been cancelled due to the fuel shortage?

I’ve seen a lot on the news about flight cancellations etc. Has anyone’s flight been cancelled? I am looking to book but not sure if it’s worth the hassle right now.
Zenese@reddit
Norse cancelled our flights to LAX from Gatwick in July. Getting my refund and will just try my luck elsewhere. Def not booking Norse again fwiw
bydevilz1@reddit
Dont scare me now, im going away in June and it would be my first holiday in 10 years.
If that orange rat has ruined my holiday im going to lose my mind
The0nlyRyan@reddit
Get insured dude
Babaaganoush@reddit
Does insurance cover this type of reason for cancellation? Genuine question, I know you’ll have to get a refund from your flight operator but will the insurance then cover the hotels and car hire you can’t use?
StarSpotter74@reddit
They'll find a way possible not to pay out
adorientem88@reddit
There is absolutely no way not to pay a refund when an airline cancels a flight. There are no exceptions. That would just be outright theft.
ICanEditPostTitles@reddit
https://www.caa.co.uk/passengers-and-public/resolving-travel-problems/delays-and-cancellations/cancellations/#
adorientem88@reddit
You don’t expect to receive any additional compensation, that’s correct. But even when it wasn’t the airline’s fault, they still owe you a 100% refund. There are no exceptions.
ThenChipmunk699@reddit
Or a rerouting either at the earliest opportunity or a later date of your choosing at no additional cost to you. Once you take the refund, the airline is no longer obligated to still get you to your final destination.
adorientem88@reddit
Correct.
Babaaganoush@reddit
I’d fully expect a refund if they cancelled my flight, but what about getting a hotel refund now I can’t get there?
ComprehensiveEmu227@reddit
You accept that risk when you travel
adorientem88@reddit
That’s a lot harder.
MindTheBees@reddit
Hotel is unlikely unfortunately - unless maybe it's all booked with a travel provider and you have insurance for the whole package potentially.
My mate was meant to fly to Sri Lanka for a wedding before the Iran war(?) kicked off and he got his flights refunded since the flight itself was cancelled, but lost all the hotel payments.
Resident_Hunter4583@reddit
War
adorientem88@reddit
No, war is not an exception. If an airline cancels a flight due to war, they still owe a full refund.
reelmonkey@reddit
I think they won't from what I have read most insurance won't cover acts of war and this will be an act of war.
adorientem88@reddit
Not really. The fuel shortage is ultimately traceable to the war, but it’s not the immediate cause.
Bethurz@reddit
Mine renewed today so I have it to hand and it specifically says it won't pay claims arising directly or indirectly from war
adorientem88@reddit
That’s crazy, because if you go back far enough, basically every historical event is a consequence of some war. So they are basically just telling you not to buy that policy.
QuinnTalonVampire@reddit
Just tell them that it’s not a “war,” but a “special military operation.”
stepho86@reddit
No i was looking last night and almost all of them say they won’t pay out if the holiday is cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East
Tammer_Stern@reddit
I think that applies to going to places where the Foreign Office has said do not travel.
stepho86@reddit
Yeah, that’s in the T&C’s too. But most have now added a specific thing saying they don’t pay out for disruption caused by conflict. I was trying to get cover as I’ve booked my flights and hotel separately and wanted to cover my hotel is my flight is cancelled due to fuel shortage etc I even rang a specialist insurer and they said they won’t cover it.
Tammer_Stern@reddit
That’s shocking really. I wonder if it would survive a legal or Ombudsman challenge?
ron_mcphatty@reddit
Should do. It may cost more, our pre-Covid insurance didn’t cover Covid cancellation so we took out a pricier second policy before we found out the USA was closing boarders. We had to pay the excess on both policies in order to claim on the second but our trip was covered so got almost all our money back.
inthepipe_fivebyfive@reddit
I thought this as well but aren't wars or "known events" prior to taking out insurance excluded? (Presuming fuel shortages are known events?

We've just finished booking our honeymoon in June. I'll be absolutely gutted if we can't go.
suitveil@reddit
sames - we're off on ours soon and this isn't the stressor I wanted to add to it ngl
OCDCantCatchMe@reddit
We’re going on our honeymoon in July, from Canada to the UK, but we’re pairing it with a family wedding in London at the same time - and since neither the bride nor the groom is from the UK (but live there), basically all of the guests are flying in. I’m going to be so sad for them if their big day gets screwed up for such a stupid reason.
ambergresian@reddit
we were supposed to do that this weekend but now I don't know...
DC38x@reddit
You don't need to go abroad for a honeymoon. Nothing more romantic than a week at Butlins in Skeggy

Be prepared to be flexible as your flight will probably be consolidated with another flight.

You mean sitting on a strangers lap or standing room only?
Puzzleheaded-Web1519@reddit
Ryan Air?
Icy_Service_8336@reddit
Long Story shut I will summarise as best I can, basically Ryan Air is a Budget no thrill UK based Airliner that uses rude/borderline bullying or provocative marketing tactics and is outspoken not just to passengers but to staff. The Aircraft have as many seats packed in as possible with no reclining and little leg room. They started off with the famous 50p flights where people would buy the flight for 50p or £1 turn up to the Airport and then have a raffle for the flight between passengers, because they would “accidentally” overbook. Those who won, then paid extra unexpected fees. When that practice was banned the CEO would say things like we are going to charge passengers to use the toilet, Fat passengers pay more (which I somewhat agree with because the seats are small and when you sit in the middle seat, between two big units and their flab is resting on your leg, its not nice), Standing up seats, and straight standing up rows.
Puzzleheaded-Web1519@reddit
Apart from that, would you recommend them?

I had the reverse of this on a flight from Abu Dhabi to London right at the start of March 2020, flew back from Australia 2 days before they shut the borders. The flight was an Airbus but it was practically empty, so I took my blanket, stretched out across the central 4 seats and slept nearly all the way home. Result!

Sensitive_Tomato_581@reddit

EntirelyRandom1590@reddit
No, I mean probably. Unless you're flying on an absolutely fully booked flight, expect airlines to be trying to get your flight as packed as possible. And unless flying in school holidays, July is prime time for that.
Sensitive_Tomato_581@reddit
Have you got proof for this - I fly a lot with work and planes are rarely not around 90% full so the majority of flights are already as packed as possible. Its not economy to fly half ful planes.

EmotionalMycologist9@reddit
When was your flight supposed to leave?
Pointlessname123321@reddit
End of June. Norse cancelled every flight out of LAX due to fuel concerns.
EmotionalMycologist9@reddit
I've read a few people say that about Norse. We're going to Italy in 4 weeks through American Airlines.

mamainak@reddit
I have 6 flights in July and August 😅 let's hope they don't cancel, it's a big airline, not a low-budget one.
Foch155551@reddit
I've had a Finnair flight from Hel to Oslo be cancelled, I tried doing a dummy bookingof the same flight on a few different days and yes they've removed it from their schedule. I feel like airlines will slim down their operations especially u profitable ones.
herwiththepurplehair@reddit
No but as a kind of aside, we use kerosene heating oil in our home, the price of that has doubled from about £350 for 500 litres to £740. When I asked our supplier why it's so high, he told me that there is a global shortage of kerosene anyway, and since the start of the Iran war, the UK government has bulk purchased aviation fuel which is largely kerosene, thus meaning there is going to be a shortage if this carries on, and sad to say that holiday flights are most definitely going to be the first to be affected.
nick9000@reddit
'kerosene' sounds much cooler than paraffin

CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
Kerosene, paraffin, lamp oil, jet fuel and diesel oil are all basically the same thing. Differences in additives, energy density, level of filtering, bio-originated elements and consequently flame temperature exist but in a pinch you can swap any for any of the others if you accept slightly reduced performance - or slightly enhanced, if you put jet fuel in a tilly lamp....
Means the market for all of them tends to be heavily linked.
phatboi23@reddit
Isn't avgas for light aircraft/GA usually leaded too?
ambadawn@reddit
Yep. Because the majority of GA planes rare 50+ years old. With carburettors and manual chokes. Because new planes are incredibly expensive.
theraininspainfallsm@reddit
Most are, but they are trying to phase out leaded avgas. There are some leaded versions available at some airports.
phatboi23@reddit
I know my local places are slowly stopping carrying it.
I know a good few places that have stopped :/
Imagine pulling up and going "shit"
Someone's gotta do a 200km drive to fuel a plane.
GA needs to move away from it as modern planes done need it, just cheaper usually.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
I have a feeling so but I dont know if thats still the case or not
phatboi23@reddit
Pretty sure it is last I checked about a year ago.
Usually for older engines and a lot of GA stuff just needs it as modern engines cost too much etc etc etc.
theraininspainfallsm@reddit
Wow so I guess Douglas’s was alright to put the fuel form Gurtie into his Lexus. Assuming it was a diesel.

Waste_Jello9947@reddit
During covid I was in a 787 with other 10 people max for a 15 hours flight
Speedbird223@reddit
Popular does not equal profitable.
An empty seat is one that isn’t generating revenue. The airline’s goal is to capture the highest prices that passengers are willing to pay for given seats to fill the aircraft. Obviously that’s borderline impossible so they continually finagle and adjust prices accordingly with view to filling every seat.
Airlines only have so many aircraft and even profitable routes/flights can get canned if that aircraft can be deployed on a route that generates more revenue/profit.
phatboi23@reddit
Yup. I've had last minute flights cheap as hell because something and getting a bum in a seat is better than nothing and it being empty.
ofmiceandmel@reddit
We've just had our return flight cancelled for our May holiday but they rebooked us a day earlier. I rearranged for a day later as I'd rather have a longer holiday than a shorter one. I think it was because the flight wasn't very full rather than because of fuel shortages.
jbori1@reddit
Yeah. Qatar airways cancelled my flight in May and didn’t tell me. Only when I checked the app I saw it was cancelled. Contacted the travel agency people to arrange an involuntary rerouting which they happily did.
RhynoPlays@reddit
We had a flight from LA in mid July cancelled earlier this week. It was a minor airline so we’ve not gone with Virgin for (hopefully) some assurances.
IndependenceOk2900@reddit
Yes. I had a flight booked for first week of May with connection via Bahrain. I got an email last day saying the flight is cancelled and I had to rebook on a different airline. They haven't mentioned a clear reason on the email though.
ScarySpecific1991@reddit
Airlines aren’t cancelling flights due to a fuel shortage. If they cancelling it’s because demand has gone down so can fit everyone on less flights, therefore saving money. They wouldn’t cancel based on a possible fuel shortage when there currently isn’t one
philman132@reddit
There isn't s fuel shortage yet, but fuel costs have gone through the roof. If they sold a flight with cheap seats that is no longer profitable due to the increased fuel costs they may well cancel it for that reason instead
farr2211@reddit
Airlines pay for fuel a year in advance. They wouldn’t be loosing money yet from cheap flights. It’s just the demand is down and the main international hubs are still very cheap but no one wants to fly through an active war zone so all the other routes have gone up in price
grahamsnumber10@reddit
When you hedge fuel you are not actually buying and storing your fuel. You hedge crude oil, I.e lock in the price that you pay for said crude oil as and when you need it. If there is no crude oil available then you can have all the hedges in the world but they are essentially useless until the black gold starts flowing again.
Second point jet A1 fuel is a refined and processed product. This costs money and the costs of refining have increased approximately 4x. This is why while the oil price hasn’t gone relatively ridiculous (it hasn’t doubled or tripled) jet fuel on the other hand has doubled in price.
AgitatedPianist6855@reddit
Not necessarily, most UK airlines do hedge their fuel but not 100% easyjet and wizz for example sit in the 60% range so 40% of their fuel is bought on the spot market. (Well it all is actually but the logistics behind hedging are complicated)
Revolutionary_Pierre@reddit
This guy is right 👆
Easyjet do not, I repeat do not hedge their fuel stocks a year in advance. They've gotten better at it, but they're nowhere in the margins as bigger airlines and their stockpiles will be the first to draw it's last breath when the shortage hits.
Ok-Personality-6630@reddit
This is why I reckon easy jet are a great buy atm
Speedbird223@reddit
Depends on the airline and their credit standing.
I’m fairly in tune with aviation sector and the only airline I’ve seen cancelling flights because of fuel issues is Norse. They’re not especially robust financially and it’s on the LAX-Europe flights which are going to be their highest cost ones to operate and as a low cost carrier their margins are razor thin, even by airline standards. Due to EU261 they can’t cancel too near departure without incurring huge costs so they’re just doing it now.
CessnaBandit@reddit
They do not pay for fuel a year in advance. Some will agree to rates in advance for a percentage of their fuel but it varies from airline to airline
AndyTheSane@reddit
Well, they buy future contracts. It may be more profitable to sell that contract and cancel the flight than take delivery of the contract and run the flight.
Frosty_Leg4438@reddit
There is a fuel shortage. Airlines plan/supply in advance and currently most European providers only have 6 weeks fuel left.
Gold-Creme-9597@reddit
Havent people been saying that for about 3 weeks now? Im not an expert so genuine question but there doesnt seem to be much chat about it currently.
Frosty_Leg4438@reddit
On reflection, I think that's a fair question.
It is talked about fairly regularly e.g. this today: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/apr/16/europe-supply-jet-fuel-iran-war-flight-cancellations-iea
But I'm not expert enough on airlines to know how *real* it is. There are lots of vested interests in big businesses like this, so it's conceivable it's been talked up as part of a negotiating tactic (reduced airline taxes) due to costs rather than fuel availability?
Gold-Creme-9597@reddit
I totally missed this today! Thank you for not biting my head off. And good point about vested interests and tactics!
Frosty_Leg4438@reddit
No problem :-)
whosUtred@reddit
I work in the industry, currently there is no fuel shortage but prices for jet fuel are through the roof, about double compared to before the “crisis”, majority of our carriers are advising that fuel shortages will start being an issue from mid May ish.
The reason there is no shortage yet is because it takes quite a long time for the oil tanker ships to get from the Middle East to refineries around the world, the last ones that left before the shit hit the fan are just docking now, so within a few weeks we’ll globally have 20% less fuel than we’re used to.
Even if everything got resolved today, it would take until August for supply to catch back up
floppy-socktopus@reddit
I live in Vietnam and many domestic flights have been cancelled due to fuel shortage. 80% of plane fuel here is imported and the two biggest suppliers, being China and Thailand, have stopped exports. It totally depends on the country. If you’re planning to come to Vietnam, I strongly suggest you don’t book with Vietjet or Vietnam Air as they’re the worst affected. I’m moving back to Europe this summer and I really hope it doesn’t get worse before I leave.

If the flight is canceled and you have rebook on your own for another flight, I would think it will be 4 times the cost! Especially if it's close to when you plan to fly. A one way Delta premium ticket Tampa to Frankfurt we got for $1300 each. I said we need to grab that. That same 1 way fare is now almost 5k! We are flying Jetblue back to Boston from Milan MXP and had a $1250 credit each, upgraded to ninth for another $1300 each. I don't think we will get or credit back as it will show expired. Thanks to the clown in the white house. This was our 50th anniversary trip!!! Leaving May 20 and staying for over a month. Very anxious now.
PeaceLoveCurrySauce@reddit
Travel insurance and paying by credit cards are your friends but I wouldn’t panic, I think if anything, they’ll just consolidate flights, so your times might change but that’ll be it.
nrm94@reddit
Check your terms on travel insurance. A lot of standard policies won't likely cover a flight cancellation/change under these circumstances as it's directly linked to conflict of war.
Former_Cattledog@reddit
The whole 6 weeks of fuel left, don't know if I believe it, I have exactly 6 weeks till I'm meant to go away
DEADB33F@reddit
If you book now and pay an inflated price where current jet fuel prices are priced into your ticket you'll probably be fine.
Those who are more likely to get cancelled are the ones who bought their flights months ago at previous prices which would be loss-making if those rates were offered now.
...They'd sooner cancel and refund the latter flights and have people like you on board who have paid for tickets which account for the current fuel prices.

They cancel and move flights anyway. We’re flying to Spain in July and our original flight was cancelled, we were just moved onto one a couple of hours later in the day. No idea if it was due to fuel shortages, the early flight being barely full so they’re consolidating flights, or another factor. It’s normal. Same thing happened to a flight we took in January, before the whole Iran thing hit the fan, and again to me in 2024. Don’t stress over it.

Yes. I’ve had a British Airways flight to Tenerife cancelled. It appears that they are consolidating flights (rumours are they are over booking to the max). Saw a guy on TikTok get bumped off a BA flight because they’d over booked by 21 seats.

ScarySpecific1991@reddit
And they told you the reason was a fuel shortage? Nope but airlines are consolidating flights since demand has gone down etc. there might be one in the future if things aren’t sorted but there isn’t currently a fuel shorted and an airline isn’t randomly selecting flights they think won’t have fuel. Just flights that make less money.
vegan_voorhees@reddit
The airline didn't get in touch, it was the package company or whatever you'd call them. They just said Airline 1 is no longer doing the flight, you can shift to Airline 2 or cancel.

Speedbird223@reddit
No need to be. BA/IAG are financially robust, the airlines that have been canceling are Norse and on their highest to operate routes.
The worst that can happen with BA is they’ll put you on JAL, which depending upon your class of travel could be a huge win! However, BA’s Japan routes are extremely profitable with high yields, even with the high cost of operation and so I suspect they’d be one of the least likely to get cancelled if this even becomes a thing with BA, which I really doubt.

Not_Alpha_Centaurian@reddit
I booked a May day weekend getaway last week on the assumption i could sneak off just before the fuel shortage becomes an issue. Risky strategy as it'll be right on the cusp of when the shortages are expected.
Zealousideal_Fold_60@reddit
Just scaremongering , click baiting and general crap reporting by liberal left media, and as usual completely false.. not a single flight globally cancelled due to this
Glum_Bite3796@reddit
What do you get out of lying?
NoCold3997@reddit
Probably not through fuel shortages but cost.
itsallconfetti@reddit
Maybe if you actually traveled or read actual news you’d know…
All Norse airlines flight have been indefinitely cancelled from LAX to London Gatwick… my June flight got cancelled yesterday specifically due to the rise in oil prices
Super_Club_4507@reddit
Easyjet started consolidating flights from April 1st.
Our flight from Malaga last night was cancelled and we were moved to today. As it happened, there was a Ryanair flight much cheaper and the same time as our original flight so we booked that (along with a significant number of other easyJet passengers we learnt in the queue!) and got a full refund from easyJet.
With friends in the aviation industry, it seems to be the plan from the budget airlines at least to consolidate rather than cancel. Unfortunately consolidation could see your flights moved a day or two either side.
bossanovaallnight@reddit
Well, I’ve already accepted that my holiday in the summer will be cancelled.
Going to use my savings from it to get the private knee surgery I need though. So not all bad
NoCold3997@reddit
What will be shall be 🤷
CrashHamilton@reddit
Theoretically what happens if your flight gets cancelled? Do you get your money back or is it a whole faff with insurance? We are supposed to be going on our first abroad family holiday this summer, I don't usually buy into sensationalist news but this has got me a tiny bit worried.
NoCold3997@reddit
Airlines have a duty of care to get you where you need to be if they can't or the alternative arrangement is no good for you they have to give you a full refund
potato_face1234@reddit
They will take your money even if they know you are going absolutely nowhere. Any routes that don't make money or less money will be cancelled first, I wouldn't book anything unless you are going in the next couple of weeks.
No_Story5313@reddit
Yes, supposed to flying to Phuket in 6 weeks, from Manchester via Abu Dhabi, it was cancelled last week.
cal_london@reddit
So I don't know whether it's fuel shortage because the email didn't say but... I was scheduled to fly from LA back home to London Heathrow on BA yesterday but the flight was cancelled. I am now going via United later today.
BookwormZA@reddit
Mine got cancelled due to a pilot strike. Ended up flying early for a work trip. Hoping I can get back next week!
Mikhas_donaster@reddit
Ive just flown back and from london and naples. Most flights seemed fine
mattcannon2@reddit
Been rebooked to a flight later in the day

Europe has “maybe six weeks or so” of remaining jet fuel supplies, the head of the International Energy Agency said Thursday in a wide-ranging interview, warning of possible flight cancellations “soon” if oil supplies remain

Spend the money prepping, if this is not settled soon, food chains will be hit also, there is bound to be panic buying IMHO
nerdyPagaman@reddit
It will be later on - mid may when things get interesting.
TropicalTito@reddit
My partner is currently in Frankfurt on a work trio due home tomorrow. The return flight has been cancelled and they've been rerouted through Paris to the UK. This is with Lufthansa.
NoCold3997@reddit
Lufthansa was on strike yesterday ?
NoCold3997@reddit
It's over the worse now ..i would get your tickets yesterday as the price will only go up the longer you leave it .... and in reality airlines have a duty of care to get you where your supposed to be going if your flight is cancelled or full refund.
You_moron04@reddit
All this to hide the Epstein files…
Parshath_@reddit
Oh my. Hope that is not a thing. I am going on holidays slash visiting family for two weeks in May.
I hope the Americans are already winning something, because the rest of the world is clearly not.
JamsHammockFyoom@reddit
No, but I'm keeping a close eye on my flight to Amsterdam in June and my flight to Montreal in September. 😬
Honestly, my work colleagues etc have thought I was mad for years driving to Europe on holiday especially as I live 300 miles from the Eurotunnel before we even get into France.
Having said that, at least I'm not reliant on the whim of an orange ape when I drive and a shortage of fuel doesn't derail my entire holiday.
nick9000@reddit
Virgin Atlantic have introduced fuel surcharges, it would probably have to get really bad before there are many cancellations

I don’t know about the fuel shortage, but my BA London City to Barcelona on May 3rd was cancelled, a bit stressful as this is taking us to a cruise. We were rebooked onto a slightly later LHR flight that gets us in 2 hours later. And it’s an extra £100 for the taxi……
Low-Rooster5398@reddit
Not yet but my job relies on flights, booking them etc and I'm seriously worried about it's safety, long term.
nick9000@reddit
Hopefully they will...

If the summer hollibobs get cancelled is when the revolution begins I reckon hahaha 🤣
mosleyowl@reddit
Brother and his family got their half full flight cancelled on Monday and essentially combined with another flight on Tuesday. They got home but he says there about 15 people who couldn’t fit on as both flights combined were a bit too much.
He got an extra days holiday out of it but I imagine for those 15 people it was a bit more infuriating
Dry_Action1734@reddit
Seen one be cancelled so everyone was put on an earlier. So one full plane instead of two half full. Don’t know if it would have happened anyway
Graz279@reddit
Got flights booked to the South of France in August wit a certain Ireland based budget airline. Just praying they don't get pulled else our family holiday will be screwed. They shouldn't though as the cost was pretty high being in school holiday time.
OdBlow@reddit
Domestically no flying from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Bristol/Southampton. We thought they might get cancelled as they’re shorter flights but have been fine and last flown a few days ago.
UTG1970@reddit
If you are going to a popular holiday destination it's going to be fine, but possibly less planes on less popular routs
