Where can I get pickles that aren’t so sweet and soft?

I’m looking for pickles which aren’t soft and sweet everyone I’ve tried so far has been sweet help me out I want normal tasting pickles which aren’t soft crunchy and taste “sour” wouldn’t mind if it’s spicy too
daftydug@reddit
Goldstar chipshop pickles, best one's are the 2.25kg jar. Proper chippie pickles.
radandro@reddit
Polish shops have those - i hate all pickles that aren't sour and salty and crunchy, so im totally with you on that. My recommendation is to look for "ogórki kiszone" - they're the best type. They can come either in glass jars or in bags in the fridge section.
Fizl99@reddit
Do you mean things like pickled onion or more chopped pickles like Branston (which is sweet and tangy)
Ahleanna-D@reddit
I suspect OP means gherkins.
GayAttire@reddit
People suddenly calling gherkins pickles lately is driving me irrationally fucking mental.
Ahleanna-D@reddit
I occasionally slip up and say pickles, but I have the excuse of being a yank. 🤣 (I’m also a Brit now too!)
Woolpig@reddit
ME TOO. We had an unambiguous word but Americans don't use it so let's all stop using it too and cause ourselves needless confusion.
Obvious-Water569@reddit
If you find them, I'd like to know as well.
I want American style deli pickles - sharp, heavy on the dill and not 30% sugar.
Tonybham01@reddit
I assume that you mean pickled cucumbers. In London they used to be known as Wallies.
The only ones that are really good are Mes Elwood’s Haimishas.
More crunchy and salty than insipid dill pickles. In my opinion even better than the Polish ones.
Mental_Musician_6570@reddit (OP)
Thanks I will give it a try
LuckInternational336@reddit
Keep your fingers out of the vinegar, use a fork or something.
Content-Violinist613@reddit
Why?
LuckInternational336@reddit
The oils from your skin do some chemical whizzle-dizzle and make the pickles go soft.
Winter_Parsley8706@reddit
I find the Aldi ones to be nice. Certainly not sour
hdhxuxufxufufiffif@reddit
No use to the OP then.
Winter_Parsley8706@reddit
I need to learn to read properly haha
OkTadpole2920@reddit
Get some Turkish ones, you could break your teeth on those!
Icy_Ear7079@reddit
Polish supermarket!
Over-Language2599@reddit
Yes this. Or Romanian, etc. But look for the ones in plastic bags not glass jars.
Tesco also carries them in larger stores, in the Polish chilled section next to the sauerkraut.
Tonybham01@reddit
I don’t know about plastic bags. The wallies that we used to get from the fish and chip shop were in catering sized tin cans.
lilpalmaviolet@reddit
Persian supermarkets too - try the 1&1 or Anjoman brands.

Make your own? I'm surprised kids learn to make cornflake cakes before pickles, they are that easy!
Tall_Stick5608@reddit
Because kids enjoy baking and making sweet treats and eating or selling them. Making pickles is rewarding / therapeutic but I would think I’m being punished as a kid learning about communism
imtheorangeycenter@reddit
Haha, you're not wrong, I was being flippant, but it probably popped into my head because last year the kid craze in the corner shop was for a pickle in a.bag - which I think they eat with one of those fruit laces. I'm pretty bloody sure they weren't pregnant either, being 10 and all.
xmastreee@reddit
Cornflake cakes are quick and easy, and pretty much instant. I remember my mum making pickled onions and there was a lot of waiting involved.
expat2immigrant@reddit
I wanted to suggest the same thing! They take no effort and are shockingly quick to be ready to eat. As opposed to, say, sauerkraut which takes weeks to ferment.
PLUMPUFFIN@reddit
Go online and order Serious Pig snacking pickles. The chilli ones are 👌 Think a pack of 12 is about 20 quid.
Chuck them in the fridge and then enjoy.
I love them and miss them
thesilenceofthepeas@reddit
Polish aisle in Tescos or go to a Polish shop, look for the word Kwaszone if you want the sour ones 😎
rumbugger@reddit
I used to buy the Dawtona gherkins in Tesco which used to be great, but the last jar I bought they were soft rather than crunchy. Checked the reviews on Tesco and a lot of people saying the same, so I'll be watching the comments here with interest.
WildsmithRising@reddit
I love Mrs Elswood Haimisha pickles. Sainsbury's sells them. They are fabulous.
Bifanarama@reddit
I much prefer the sweet dill ones. Or even better, if I'm near a kosher deli, new green.
Dangerous_Owl3659@reddit
Agree. Had a bad jar the other day with a mouldy one in that has kinda put me off for a bit. But normally they are incredible
Dazzling_Bat_Hat@reddit
These.
Jmac0113@reddit
Mrs Haywood Haimisha pickles are great
Bifanarama@reddit
Mrs Elswood.
LopsidedBell7339@reddit
I check the ingredients, if there are sweeteners or sugar in the pickles I don't buy them as I result I always get nice, crunchy sour pickles. Supermarkets often have them in the world foods aisle, otherwise see if you can find a middle eastern store as Lebanese pickles are amazing,
Scotster123@reddit
Morrisons is where I get them - own brand.
metamongoose@reddit
Shocking isn't it. Water is often listed before vinegar on the ingredients. Does the market really prefer pickles that don't taste sour?
So look for jars that have vinegar listed before water!
hdhxuxufxufufiffif@reddit
I suspect that industrial food production is going to use stronger, concentrated vinegar to save on shipping and storage costs, so the label might not tell the whole story.
Toothfairy29@reddit
Aldi, they have them with just dill or with chillies. They’re usually crunchy not squishy - especially if you grab a jar with smaller pickles in! The ones I’ve had from the Polish sections of bigger supermarkets have always been large and soft and I’ve binned them.
Coconutpieplates@reddit
European independent supermarkets have a much bigger pickle range. You can also make them yourself because now mini cucumbers are much more common in the veg section.
I just go with Cornichons. I buy them from lidl and they are always a tangy crunch. I don't like a sweet pickle so you might also prefer the Cornichons.
Chickenhugga@reddit
Polish soured pickles are my choice
laluLondon@reddit
Buy French cornichons
katlady1984@reddit
Look at the imported food section at supermarkets they usually have the best stuff
malin7@reddit
My local Tesco Extra has a Polish aisle with 3 different brands of gherkins, a lot better than what's in the pickles/chutneys aisles
TheGnomeSecretary@reddit
Co-op. Own brand jar is exactly what you describe. Aldi also good but occasionally softer than I would like.
bluefactories@reddit
Bodrum or Mellis are good, I only ever find them in random off licenses. Try different varieties from your local shops until you find a good one: I have to figure out where to source them every time I move flat!
