Has anyone stayed in truly unusual accommodation in the UK?

My husband's birthday is next month and I am trying to think of something to do for him. We are trying not to accumulate more "stuff" so buying him a physical gift isn't top of the list. Husband recently mentioned that he'd like to stay somewhere "really interesting" and gave examples like a converted windmill, or railway signal box with the features intact (like... levers or whatever).
I had the idea that we could book a little getaway somewhere like this and have been looking for unusual airbnbs or on Canopy and Stars, but other than one in a converted bus which was quite cool, I don't feel like I have found anything. The algorithm seems to think "has a hot tub outside" qualifies as 'unusual'.
Has anyone stayed in a really cool or unusual Airbnb or holiday home? Ideally in the UK as we are struggling this year to get time off work together.
Thanks in advance!

I believe there's a converted windmill in Rye which you can stay in!

Think the national trust have a few cool and unusual places such as forts and castles if that’s any good?

Port meirion in North Wales....
MoodyBernoulli@reddit
We were visiting Portmeirion a couple of years ago and happened to get talking to the bloke who was painting the houses. Unexpectedly he decided to start taking us around some of the rooms before people had checked in. One of them was like staying in a castle and had a floating style bed in the room.
He was saying how they have to paint it in such a way that it looks weathered and never looks freshly painted. There’s a committee that go around and reference photographs to make sure nothing visibly changes.

You can stay in an RAF control tower or an airplane in Friskney, Lincs. There’s an excellent pub called the Barley Mow very close by, but the negative is that your nearest town is Skegness

JeffSergeant@reddit
Wainfleet St. Mary is a lovely little market town, and Skegness isn't all that bad! If you park on the seafront and don't venture too far :)
Spiderplantmum@reddit
I used to work in Skegness and my experience of the place wasn’t the best. We go up to Gibraltar Point every now and then, though

Landmark and National Trust. We stayed in a gatehouse in Clumber Park and also have done several Landmark Trust places. One amazing old building in Suffolk but all of those are amazing.

Stay in a library and read books 16-18h a day. This will either be paradise or hell for you.
dwair@reddit
Stayed in lots of quirky places in the last few years. Two that stand out are a Western themed shed at a donkey sanctuary in mid Wales and a converted Canadian school bus in a field in Dorset. My wife somehow finds these places so not much help beyond saying keep looking.

My Ex-FIL is a big train nerd and they stayed in an old signal house in Scotland. He loved it. Can't message to ask. But it may have been one of these from memory:
Stay - Kyle Station Museum Signal Box Holiday Apartment - Tiny houses for Rent in Kyle, Highland, United Kingdom - Airbnb
This looks lovely: The Old Ticket Office Eggesford | The Old Ticket Office Eggesford in Eggesford, Devon
Have a look: Railfuture | Rail-based accommodation
Airbnb has a unique homes option.

You might get luckier in the Netherlands etc with Windmills. Useful: Windmills & Watermills | Host Unusual
I stayed in a really cool tower in Ireland on my Honeymoon. airbnb.co.uk/rooms/752681744542167103?_set_bev_on_new_domain=1776337298_EAM2RhMTk0MTg5OT&set_everest_cookie_on_new_domain=1776337298.EAOGU3YTY4OTE3Y2Y2Nj.iHXHFu00qGdUO83axIFg2yzsK8QnBIMzCaVC5b8NEBw&source_impression_id=p3_1776338256_P3abzBrXhm1nNSqQ The bedroom is on the top and we had the most amazing sunrises, sets and a full moon like something off a horror movie.

Shepherds hut in wales by forest & lake lovely. There are castles you can stay in as well I stayed in a castle keep that was meant to be haunted. It was stunning & never got woken by any ghosts.

I stayed in an old train carriage when I worked at a festival in Cornwall. There had some really creepy dolls.
badreligionlover@reddit
I stayed in a train carriage 'The Carriage' on AirBnB.
Its a renovated train carriagefrom 1895 that is part of an old train line. Its sat at the station (which the owner lives in) and is very quirky and yet really lovingly restored to look amazing.

ooh i think it's on airbnb but i might be wrong, somewhere up north there's an old air traffic control tower you can stay in
The_Dimlord@reddit
Look up the Landmark Trust. They offer really old/unusual places that they have restored. Castles, follys, turrety jobs, historic town houses, all sorts.
On-Mute@reddit
Yes to this. We stayed at the shore cottage at Berridale Brae and it was amazing - you have to cross a rope bridge to get to the cottage. Mind you, depending on where you are based it might be quicker to travel overseas.
plantsncats128@reddit (OP)
My husband would love the chance to shake a rope bridge while I try to walk across it 😂

Stayed in a treehouse in Suffolk, or Norfolk, can't remember.

Ooo I live in Suffolk, I'd like to see this !

The socks and sandals? Overrated to be honest. I'll try and find the link for the treehouse, in case it's that you'd prefer

Ha yes please 🤣 I've found one in becckes but that looks like a cabin. Trying to wade through the app.

The Watertower
Quirky and an excellent base to visit Edinburgh.

I haven't stayed but saw one in a converted WW2 bunker which appealed to me, I can't find my bookmark now.
And there are some great treetop ones which look fun.
And as well as windmills, look at lighthouses. A lot that are no longer in full use have been converted to self-catering accommodation.

Try Blackberry Wood Campsite near Brighton in the South Downs - https://www.blackberrywood.com/
Alongside the camping it's got treehouses, lodges, converted buses, a fire engine, and best of all... an old Westland Wessex helicopter.

I've never stayed there myself but the House in the Clouds in Thorpeness, just up the toad from Aldeburgh ob the Suffolk coast. My dad grew up in Thorpeness, it's a really odd little place, and it's worth visiting soon before it all falls into the sea...
