Need help with choosing my GPU

Hello! So I recently started building a gaming PC (still in the part where I need to choose my components tho). I landed on the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and I started browsing retailers in my area. I ended up finding the Tray Socket edition and the Box Edition of the CPU at the same store. the tray socket is priced at 356,18 $(with tax) and the box edition is priced at 393,03 $ (with tax). What is the difference between the two? They seem to have the same specs on the website... Thank you!

Box version is nicely packaged in the iconic AMD orange box. Tray version isn't, but is still packaged properly and safely. Buy the tray version unless you reaaally want that AMD box

Id rather save up some money tbh =)))) Many thanks!

This is the old way and I generally recommend it... Just make sure you get thirty days from the tray vendor in case shit happens

The tray CPU doesn't come with a warranty (at least for non-system builders).

thank you very much. I don t see any problem in buying the tray version since I guess the cpu won t break randomly unless I do anything to it. Thanks!

If you have a credit card, look into the benefits they offer.
It could give you 6 to 24 months of extra warranty depending on where you live or which credit card plan you have.
Either way, I'd still buy something with at least some base warranty, cause everything can fail.

Important to note that, at least in the US, extended warranty benefits on cards only apply if the product already has a warranty.

That's the main reason I mentioned to look into the benefits the credit card offers, as there can be many differences between countries and credit cards.
But thanks for clarifying what OP should be looking at specifically. I should've been clearer.

Well, you've actually got a bit of a decision to make. CPUs do tend to have the lowest failure rates out of most PC parts. But being an electronic component, it follows the bathroom curve--failures happen early and late in the product's expected lifetime. It's also why manufacturers provide warranties to begin with.
So while the chances of the CPU failing are low, it's not zero. And you have no recourse if you're unlucky and it does fail early. So essentially, you're buying peace-of-mind with that extra $40.
Personally, I'd go with the box edition. But if your budget's real tight where $40 is make-it-or-break-it on your system, you can go with the tray version and you'll probably be OK. Probably.

hmmm. Actually good point. My budget is NOT that tight, maybe I can sneak in a few extra bucks just for the peace of mind now that you mentioned it

What mobo are you using? Certain mobos have higher failure rates in which case you'd probably want the CPU warranty.

I am using the MSI B850M GAMING PLUS WIFI6E

Oh nice same as me. Should be fine then

Sweet

Sorry. Meant to say CPU in the title*
