Why are Greece & Bulgaria more likely to be against Albania joining the EU then the rest of the Balkans?

I am Bulgarian and I have nothing against Albanians. Moreover I consider all Albanians as very good people and very close to us as part of that unique balkan culture and historical heritage, same opinion for ALL other Balkan countries (including Greece and Turkey), except Serbians and their dependant North Macedonians as they hate us Bulgarians and are too chauvenistic. I have been in Greece, Romania and Turkey and everywhere I felt as at home, surrounded by good and hospitality people... I am sure the same will be if I visit Albania, for Serbia and Macedonia(serbized Bulgarians) I am not sure although we have very close languages with both of them. Our country always have supported the Western Balkans admission in EU, our government had that political Initiative before any other eu nations during our presidency of the EU council in 2018 and its always have been our political prerogative. I don't believe in what you have written as all my surroundings have the same opinion as me. Maybe all of this misunderstanding is due to Bulgarian position for Macedonia.. but our government proposed both country to be separated from the process so Albania do not suffer from Macedonians mistakes and to join EU easily without delay. We Bulgarians, know very well Macedonian political Elite is inferior and dependent of Ex-yugoslavs=Serbian(RuZZian) services and they will join EU only if they become independent in their decisions so the focus should be to speed up Albanian admission in EU.
Reasonable_Coach@reddit
Yipee another person calling Macedonians something something and controlled by Serbians, not only do we not hate you but we don't really care about history, at least the younger generation. Literally none of us would give a second thought if we see a bulgarian here, we'd just think "oh cool" and move on. We just want to get into the EU so that we can actually have the same benefits as the rest of Europe đ€
I will say that older generations are not slightly racist but heavily racist so I can't exactly disagree if anyone calls them shitty in that regard
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Bulgaria was never disputing the old national name and the flag of present day R.North Macedonia..
However things have evolved and today Bulgaria is respected and developing European country while, Skopje naturally follows Serbia, since all it's elites there, from government, parties, intellectuals, historians and majority of people see Bulgaria as an enemy while pretending they want inside EU.
As EU itself is aware that no Yugo pseudo system of these countries has to enter EU, they need to fulfill criteria which is coming from the EU itself, while there is no veto to progress further, just conditions.
Until new generation of people in MK didn't deal with it's future as a country, MK will stay in limbo and pretending as a victim, while no trojan nationalistic parties will enter EU such is the so called mk Vmro.
About the people there, I would generalize, but considering majority see Serbia as their first hand it's normal that your place is with them.
Reasonable_Coach@reddit
I won't read past the word Skopje till you use "North Macedonia", yall chose it, stick to it. Especially since you didn't bother to read shit and say "Bulgaria was never disputing the name" when I said greeks

I'm not entirely sure how reliable this data is or what they mean exactly but Greece has had a mixed history with Albania. Albanians are more or less fully interweaved in the fabric of greek society at this point, both historically but also in more recent times.
When Albania collapsed thousands upon thousands of Albanians flooded Greece. Many people didn't like this and considered it an "invasion", but the fact of the matter is that Albanians filled many much needed labor positions that greeks were either unwilling to do themselves or unwilling to pay better money for so that greeks would bother with them. Albanians literally built modern day Greece as they were mainly occupied in farmwork and construction during Greece's bubble years. They worked hard and nowadays most of them enjoy a much better life than the one they had in Albania, with many of them being business owners nowadays.
Obviously this wasn't that well received by everyone. While many benefitted greatly by cheap Albanian labor, working class people considered Albanians to be unfair competition in the job market, devaluing the labor value of certain jobs and "stealing" jobs from locals. Of course the reality of the situation is not much different from what's happening today with imported immigrant labor from other places. Employers actively seek out illegal immigrants to exploit for low pay, and locals either don't want to do these jobs or they won't due to the low pay. The immigrant is not really the one at fault but working class people will turn against them instead of turning against the real culprits.
We also can't ignore the fact that along with economic migrants, the Albanian mafia also intruded the country. A lot of albanians were involved in crime, from petty theft or low volume drug sales up to full blown mafia operations. This left a stain on their reputation with some older people still considering that all Albanians are criminals. This isn't true but immigrants always have an uphill battle when it comes to being accepted into a new country and any negative thing is amplified easily.
While Albanians are finally enjoying a good level of acceptance in greek society, older prejudiced notions still remain, and I think that some people consider the acceptance of Albania into the EU as a second "wave" of Albanian invasion like the one in the 90s. And of course the government benefits from this idea because as long as people think that other people are their problem they won't focus on the fact that it's always been their own government failing them and not doing right by them instead of immigrants disrupting their communities.
prodigioustimekiller@reddit
I don't think Greeks in particular are against Albania joining the EU. Bulgaria as well. The map makes no sense.
It would make some sense if some Greeks were against North Macedonia joining the EU. But Albania? I don't think anyone cares.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
North Macedonia is actually worse country than Albania because it relies on three agreements, one of which is internal multiethnic and two bilateral neighbouring agreements.
Albania being poor and corrupt and still isolated, however the sea tourism has seen it ev natural chance to prosper.

Greece and Bulgaria simply know what Albania is about, the integration of it would be detrimental to the EU. In their current state of affairs, where the rule of law is severely lacking, and the country is a hub for most of cocaine trade in Europe, I don't see any sane argument for accepting it into our economic sphere.
Mucklord1453@reddit
They are not ready to join the EU. They need to work on their minority rights issues first, especially in the Greek south.
Affectionate-Ad6801@reddit
I think this is bs basically the e.u. doesn't want neither Montenegro, Albania, bosnia serbia, turkey in e.u. for different reasons in Albania case its because of the Albanian mafia that basically controls their government every year you hear that a 10% of their Nations land is planted with marijuana and the corruption is off the chart's also there were cases of albanian criminals going back to Albania(while they were wanted by Europol, interpol and a countries police) and making new legal papers id and going back as this new person
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Bari_Baqors@reddit
Not to hurt anyone, but I associate Albanians with marijuana, tbh.
Substratas@reddit (OP)
The marijuana business dwindled tremendously when Lazarat was burned to ashes.
Now itâs cocaine.
No_Search7380@reddit
Yeah guys⊠a portion still upholds tre tradition of blood vengenanceâŠ
âAn Albanian study of 2018 on blood feuds that included data from police records noted that there are 704 families affected with 591 in Albania and 113 having left the country.[15] Six Albanian districts, KukĂ«s, ShkodĂ«r, LezhĂ«, TiranĂ« and DurrĂ«s, are affected by the practice.[15] ShkodĂ«r and LezhĂ« districts are most affected and the cities of TiranĂ« and DurrĂ«s are least affected.â
Thatâs fucked. Iâm surprised Albanians are surprised that other EU nations arenât the most optimistic about accepting them. Seriously have Albanians met Albanians?
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Which tradition lmfao??? These vendettas have nothing to do with the marijuana cultivation in Lazarat. In Albania, blood revenge is exclusively a Northern Albanian thing. The families in Tirana & Durres are also from the North. Lazarat was producing & selling weed. Blood feuds are a totally separate issue. You're conflating two totally separate things.
Vendettas are a still problem in many parts EU territories, like Crete, Corsica, etc, so I don't think that's THE ISSUE & clearly not the reason many Greeks don't want Albania to join (if this poll is even accurate).
I'm asking about Greece & Bulgaria specifically, idgaf about the rest of the EU, so the straw-man can just go back deep into the hole it came out of.
Oh, and by the way - the country that was most against Albania cultivating weed was the Netherlands - and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know why.
No_Search7380@reddit
I never said this was about Lazarat (whatever that is). Just like with any equation, you can prove a correct result using various methods.
Yeah well dude, there are a lot more hurdels to Albania s EU ascension (as per the map you posted). And i donât know why you seem THIS DEFENSIVE to every point. Like dude, neither I nor a random German (or any other EU citizen) wonât care about the fact that blond vendetta is practised in select places - point is itâs the year 2025, not 1800 that you should be still strugling with the factual elimination of them in Albania.
Whatever.

My dude, if you donât think 704 families that the authorities know of⊠either way, itâs the fact weâre im the 2026 year currently, it isnât about the numbers as much. People start wondering how come a goverment canât eradicate such barbaric behaviour - a systematic failure. And then you have the other facts which has quite a compounding effect.
Antique_Birthday6380@reddit

I'm half-Albanian (from my father), half-Greek (from my mum) and I don't think Albania is ready for EU ascension. At all. The country is too poor, organised crime is too dominant (even though Albania actually has low levels of violent crime) and the Albanian economy is too small to be competitive. Then you have Albanian organised crime groups that cause public order problems all over Europe and hence Albanians have a bad reputation everywhere - even I have had to deal with bullshit "joke" questions like "Hey, you're Albanian, don't you have heroin to sell?" etc. Plus given Albania's amazing advantages in terms of low taxation and efficient courts and more freedom compared to Greece, I am not keen on seeing Albania in the EU at this time, either. The EU has serious disadvantages, too.

One side note - people should understand that what small countries want is irrelevant. It's whatever the big ones (France, Germany) want. They have levers to push. The decade long Schengen veto against Bulgaria and Romania was not Netherlands and Austria having an issue (well, Netherlands had, because of the ports, but it waas coincidental) - it was them doing the agenda of big ones. In the same way another decade back they accepted Bulgaria and Romania in EU despite most countries being actually against - but the big ones wanted us in for geopolitical reasons and everyone stayed in line. Even with North Macedonia, Brussels has just been utilizing Bulgaria's and Greece's stance. They have the levers to push and remove the veto if they really wanted. And if Bulgaria suddenly removed the veto, they will find another small country to veto NM if they don't want it in.
roctac@reddit
Bulgaria removed the veto for NM. It's entirely in NM hands if they want to start accession talks.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit

JRJenss@reddit
And that's based on what? Your feelings, I suppose? Then why was Hungary able to block the help for Ukraine despite the entire EU pressuring them, taking away their EU funds...etc? Austria, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden had been known as the fiscally conservative, the so-called 'fugal four' for decades and have always been super strict on any kind of EU expansion. This only changed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and today only Austria stands as the last remnant of that hypocritical position.

ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
It is not reliable if you ask 1500 people in a 90 million population ,wtf are you on
Max_ach@reddit
How do you think you do polls? Asking 5mil per poll? đ
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
The more you ask the more accurate it is ,for example during elections they ask around 0.2% of the population in huge span of time.
Max_ach@reddit
Of course it's more accurate but polls are done with even 1000 people and there is a detailed thought behind it, it's not just random people on the streets.
tranc3rooney@reddit
Thatâs why polls are done repeatedly. They arenât supposed to show the actual accurate percentage, but if you compare the numbers over time, you can see a trend if itâs growing or decreasing.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
I agree but the sample size is ridiculously small and inconsistent between countries ,Austria 1000 interviews,Netherlands 1000 ,Italy 1000 and Germany 1500
tranc3rooney@reddit
Sample size doesnât matter as much. Once you go above 500 or so, the numbers start converging less and less.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Ofc it matters ,wtf ,it is the most important factor ,500 in a 200k population is very significant but in a 100 m population is completely insignificant

The number of documentaries and reportages presenting Albania have skyrocketed in the last few years. So yeah I wouldn't be surprised if by 2030 Albania gets to join, because the big bois want it.
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Same in Sweden.
kodial79@reddit
Albania is seen as a minion of Turkey.
pitogyros@reddit
Even if that was the case ( it isnât , just because they have good relations it doesnât make them minion/puppet or w/e ) accepting Albania in the EU would reduce the Turkish influence.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
From you?
Kenepe88@reddit
Turkish influence in Albanian politics is immense. Why would we want to have essentially turks with veto power in EU?
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Thst is just bs !!what is the Turkish influence??there is way much more American and European influence ,you guys live in a bubble
Kenepe88@reddit
American influence is also a bad thing.American interests do not align with EU ones. But lets be real here.Turks are the main investors in Albania. They built a huge mosque there and put a turkish imam. They have submarines there.Greece wants to resolve the EEZ issue with Albania, like we managed with Italy, but Albania denies per turkish request.Albania in the EU,at least with Rama on her lead, will be the big hand of Turkey in EU politics.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Source that Turks are main investor in Albania??building a mosque is not an investment,Greece and Turkey are both NATO states and you say âthey have submarines thereâđđ You are just living in your own nationalistic bubble
Kenepe88@reddit
Building the greatest mosque there and in the Balkans, provides soft power.Turkey is the one that rebuilt the Pasha Liman Base and was granted its use.For whom do you think this was purposed for?Attacking Croatia?
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
You live in your own bubble with your fake news,Netherlands has been the largest foreing investor in Albania
Kenepe88@reddit
And as i said to the other guy,Netherlands dropped third but thats not the point. The Dutch do not care about the albanian agenda and influencing it.Turks do.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
You are just stupid ,I cannot help you ,you got caught lying and still acting like you were right
Kenepe88@reddit
I dont understand why you insult me.I do not mind Albania joining the EU.But the turkish influence cannot be denied and cannot be allowed into EU.Same i would say about Serbia joining. They too would be just the long hand of Russia in EU.
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
It can be denied because it is almost inexistent ,Israel has more influence than Turkey to Albania but the Most Influential ones are USA and Italy(plus the west in general) so Turkey is irrelevant
Kenepe88@reddit
Sure,whatever.
Citaku357@reddit
It's not turkey but the Netherlands lol
Kenepe88@reddit
Netherlands is third now but the dutch have no interest in albanian politics and the albanian agenda.Turks do.
Citaku357@reddit
No they are not, the Netherlands are. Google that shit
Oh no a mosque in country with a lot Muslims the horror, also no there are no Turkish imams
So?
Kenepe88@reddit
I cant reply to the same shit over and over.
Citaku357@reddit
With just a simple Google search tells me you are full of shit

ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Greek nationalist stuff ,I cannot even read it ,if you were referring to Greece only ,maybe some of you guys think that ,I thoug you were referring generally for Europe
kodial79@reddit
I was talking about Greece
ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
Ok but I can guarantee you that Turkey has very little influnce in Albanian politics ,Italy and Usa are the first ones and western influence in general completely overtakes any other influence ,if Albania joins EU they will behave exactly how the big western powers wants them to behave
JufffoWup@reddit
Greece and Bulgaria are the only two Balkan countries shown. I am sure Serbia will be in favor of Albania's accession.
pdonchev@reddit
Just replace the clown with a little lesser clown and you are welcome. đ
Seriously, the data seems off. It's probably that most people do not have any opinion or care, and the few that care are influenced by old stereotypes (criminal organizations, car theft, organ theft etc). Or it's just crap data.
FantasticQuartet@reddit
Î think it's a combination of negative stereotypes about Albanian immigrants (although it's less prominent now than in the previous decades) and a negative presentation of Albania in the media as a country hostile towards Greece.
fat-wombat@reddit
If this is data from 20 years ago I would believe it
Cristopia@reddit
Maybe France and Germany already have a lot of Albanians :D
Though another reason could be the relatively small export market and the benefits would be more for Albanians wanting to go to these ountries while the countries themselves wouldn't gain much.

Its not now, but it has been moving towards membership together with Montenegro steadily and well.

Idk man, there isn't even a date. This could be from 10 years ago. I won't bother checking sorry. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong.
I doubt anyone in Greece is actively against Albania joining. My guess is that most people would be indifferent.
giog44@reddit
Bullshit, Greece has never been against and actually doesn't care if Albania joins the EU.
GrayWolf9560@reddit
I think that none of these countries' opinions matters if the big ones decide to accept Albania in. The veto does not mean much if Germany, France, Netherlands and Belgium. Until then Albania can't join, you really think they would leave it in the hands of backwater countries like Bulgaria or Greece the expansion of EU ?
