Time to unleash the biggest pet peeve while riding a bike:

• Wrong Way Cyclists [A massive potential for a head-on collision that could seriously injure/kill both riders involved]
wlexxx2@reddit
the right hook, right in front you
unroja@reddit
I got hit on my bike in this exact scenario. I was in the bike lane and the car passed me before right hooking me so clearly should have seen me.
DongRight@reddit
That means you didn't take the lane...
wlexxx2@reddit
i'm in the bike lane if there is one, usually because the cars are stopped in the main lane..
doesn;t help
i also won;t pass on the right unless i am really sure
meaning if there is a car beside me, i will slow down or speed up to prevent the hook - even stop sometimes
unroja@reddit
I was once hit by a wrong-way cyclist in a narrow bike lane. I was pushed into the traffic lane and it was pure luck no cars were coming. Of course the guy had the nerve to get mad at me about it
BaseManDan@reddit
See these almost daily, mine is no lighting at night (or any kind of reflection to see them) and thinking stop signs are optional.
lFightForTheUsers@reddit
Where I'm at it's almost always the homeless 9/10 times. I've almost considered keeping a spare set of cheap $10 lights on my bike to hand out for those but I doubt I'd get any takers anyway (or wind up in a situation that I wouldn't want to be in).
Alberta52@reddit
ohhhh..
MesugakiBratTamer@reddit (OP)
I could understand the frustration with ghost riders. Rolling stops on the otherhand is understandable for the rider, as long as its not completely blowing through it
BaseManDan@reddit
Ah, in Canada it's illegal for bikes, cars, etc. to not stop for stop signs even if there is no traffic. Rolling stops in my area are considered "failure to stop" which is 3 points taken off license and $110 fine. Hence my pet peeve 😆
Educational-Boot-579@reddit
I have been pulled over for this. I never give them my license. I give them my passport. It does not have the information that makes it easy for the police to fill out their paperwork in a way that links to your drivers license. If they ask for a driver's license then I ask if my government issued idea is not good enough to identify self? The state i didn't think a drivers license was required to ride a bike. My kids will be disappointed to hear this.
I have gotten a tickets but never loose points off my license.
Rogue_Wraith@reddit
If you're in the States, this not doing what you think it's doing.
If a police officer has already entered your name and DOB...they have your driver's license information.
There's literally no difference in the NCIC return if an ID is ran by Name/DOB or by driver's license.
Educational-Boot-579@reddit
I am in the states and it definitely stopped all points from being taken from my license when making a right turn on a red light after a full stop.
Happened 3 times.
You may be right about the data base you are wrong about it not stopping points from my license if they ticket me.
Rogue_Wraith@reddit
I'm saying the two things aren't connected in the way you think.
Your license can get pointed even if you don't have it on you.
Providing your passport instead of your driver's license has nothing to do with that.
Your municipality may simply not point cyclists, the cops might not be mean enough to fill out that side of the paperwork, or the DA may be too lazy to go after you...any of a hundred reasons may be keeping points of your license.
It's just that you not providing your license is not reason.
FlowerCrowss@reddit
Your pet peeve should be that its not legal in Canada. The Delaware yield law permitting the safe yield treatment of stop signs on bikes has spread across several US states, with some even allowing the treatment of red lights as stop signs. Studies have shown a significant decrease in crashes where applied. Idaho Stop Wikipedia
"But what about the guy running through without checking?" They would have done the same regardless of the law. The yield laws make it clear you must use discretion lest an accident would be the cyclists fault.
Making a complete stop at a stop sign on a bike is not the same as doing so in a car.
You have fully unobstructed view and hearing; no A-pillars, a micro fraction of potential danger to others in a collision. You have to rest your bodyweight on one foot, not a big deal I know, until you have 5 stop signs in a row on your daily commute. Gaining speed from a standstill on a typical bike is ineffecient and more tiring than resuming from a slow roll. On ebikes we have it easier, pedal assist, throttle, but it's harsher on electric motors and components to stop/start from 0 repeatedly.
Stop signs were invented because of cars, it's not fair to apply them exactly the same to bikes. Intersections in the Netherlands are giving bikes a green light in every direction (coming to Belgium next) for the simple fact that bikes are not cars, and laws meant for cars should not apply to bikes. Even in car-centric places like America and Canada where there is more potential for danger to cyclists, the law is counterproductive and causes more crashes as previously mentioned. Sorry for the rant but this is my pet peeve.
MesugakiBratTamer@reddit (OP)
I see, here in the U.S., especially around populated areas, rolling stops are common among motorists and cyclists. Yes, it is technically illegal and could land you a ticket if pulled over by the police, but enforcement is basically non-existent.
BaseManDan@reddit
Yah they threaten but never follow through here as well
Any_Awareness_6846@reddit
You gotta look up your local laws on the Idaho stop. Many states do allow you to treat the stop signs as a yield. I was a huge hater of bikes running stop signs but I found out it reduces injuries by a pretty large amount in the states which have it. Frankly I just think it's the issue of often not having bike infrastructure and forcing bikes to pretend to be something they aren't.
Mid_Night_Blackbird@reddit
Stop signs for cyclists in Colorado are to be treated essentially like yield signs. It doesn't make them optional, but if it is clear you are good to keep riding through.
Comfortable-Fly5797@reddit
Wrong way cyclists in bike lanes (salmoning) really scare me. A lot of the time it's people on bike/scooter shares. I've had to swerve out of the way for them. It is also way more dangerous to ride the wrong way.
Slower cyclists passing at lights (shoaling) is a also a big peeve of mine. It isn't just annoying, it is more dangerous for the faster cyclist that has to pass again. I merge into the general lane when passing other cyclists in a bike lane to make sure I give enough space.
Extreme_Health_9827@reddit
I always ride the wrong way because I've been hit in the back several times and I have to keep an eye out for all the drivers on cell phones. im sorry it bothers. its more dangerous but only if both drivers are not paying attention. four eyes are better than two.and if i die it will at least be partly my fault. i can say ive avoided many crashes from car drivers on cell phones.
Minerva_TheB17@reddit
People coming out of driveways, parking lots, or side streets and are turning right, typically don't look right when pulling onto major streets. Riding on the wrong side puts you at greater risk of getting hit. Plus, a collision where you're moving in the same direction as the vehicle will be at a lesser force than one where you're head on in opposite directions. It's also illegal. Stop it and get out of my way when I'm on the right side or I'm pushing over (towards the sidewalk, I'm not evil)
Extreme_Health_9827@reddit
Thanks I'll be careful
Comfortable-Fly5797@reddit
It doesn't just "bother" me. It's more dangerous for you and other riders. It's also illegal in most areas.
You are doing something wrong if you've been hit from behind several times.
Late_for_Supper_@reddit
Do the math writing at 15 miles an hour against traffic gives you a 30 mile an hour difference and hitting oncoming traffic Just google wrong way writing and figure out why you're the idiot.
I've had to visit the ER twice. Broken bones and now I have screws in a bar in my shoulder due to other cars hitting me. Both times they turned in front of me.
Extreme_Health_9827@reddit
That's the whole point I don't get hit by drivers distracted by the cell phone cause I see the assholes coming and am able to get out of the way. oh your less likely to die if you get hit from behind is true but i choose not to get hit at all by using my heads up avoiding skills.
spliffs-n-riffs@reddit
You should invest in a $20 review mirror.
Extreme_Health_9827@reddit
Why should I invest in mirrors so I can watch people hit me from behind no I need to keep my eyes in front of me sorry
BreastTickles@reddit
Rarely see a wrong way cyclist. But the cyclist that feels the need to go in front of me at a red light and then pull out their cell phone? That's a daily thing.
MesugakiBratTamer@reddit (OP)
That happens to me, but wifh slower cyclists. Our positions would oscilate until eventually I clear a green and he gets stuck at a red and never see him again.
This also happens with public transport buses, but the oscillation is more competitive

Heavy_Performer1007@reddit
"riding on the wrong side of the road is dangerous" Riding on the road at all is dangerous. I feel safer seeing the traffic so I could hit a hard left and not get hit, than have no clue it's about to happen because I am keeping traffic approaching me from the rear. You're not cool OP
PatrickGSR94@reddit
It's only dangerous if you ride in a dangerous fashion. Like riding on the wrong side.
Let's say you're riding 15 against traffic that's going 30. So now you have a 45 MPH closing speed, compared to only 15 MPH closing speed if you were riding that correct way. THREE TIMES faster. That means any driver coming towards you only has 1/3 the time to react to your presence, as compared to if you were riding the same direction. If traffic is going 40, the closing speed difference is still more than double when salmoning.
When walking on the left side of a road (the correct side), you can instantly step aside if need be. That's not possible on a bicycle. Despite how it feels to you, riding against traffic is far more dangerous. Especially at side streets and driveways when motorists pulling out aren't expecting another vehicle to be approaching from their right side.

Absofuckinglutely and then they have the audacity to act like I’m in the wrong for being in their way? like dude there’s clearly arrows on the ground depicting which way the lane goes… go back to kindergarten if you can’t tell which way an arrow is pointing to
Rogue_Wraith@reddit
I sort of get this one in some scenarios. There's a bike trail on my way to work that has the lanes flipped.
Literally no one follows the faded, worn, and hard to see arrows.
If the entire country yields to one direction in 99.9% of scenarios, trying to flip it in one incredibly niche scenario just confuses everyone...who then default to the 99.9% scenario.
We yield to the right everywhere within a hundred miles of this place...why did they try to flip it to the left for a half mile stretch of road?
lFightForTheUsers@reddit
Even then, most children are taught to stay to the right when doing other tasks of society - taking a shopping cart through the grocery store, standing on an escalator, etc.
Unfortunately sometimes it just comes down to a similar KotH meme - "If those children could read, they'd be very upset."

Jerks who park in the bike lane, and in my neighborhood its assholes who try to run the stop signs because they fail to look along the side of the road for a bike or pedestrian before darting out 🤬
thomaspewter6719@reddit
the bike lane parking one is especially frustrating it’s basically forcing people into traffic just for convenience.
Life_Instruction1900@reddit
It's so annoying, in my city there's a cycle lane that runs along a road in the opposite direction to the traffic, so parking there literally forces cyclists into oncoming traffic.
Intrepid_Writing7078@reddit
People who stop & park their bike to (insert whatever reason) IN the middle of the path or trail.
People, kindly pull over to the side of the trail to sip your water, take a selfie, whatever it is you stopped for.
Other trail users are coming.
Hasn’t it crossed your mind your in the way?
KatakanaTsu@reddit
Reminds me of a guy standing on the trail taking pictures of presumably his wife and kid on a blind corner. I was on a big cargo trike, not just any regular two-wheeler. Nearly ran into the guy and had to hit the brakes. He utters a sarcastic "'scuse me" and continues to stand in the way. Had to ride partially off the asphalt to get around him. Fine example he's setting for his child.
I was on my way to work, so I didn't have all the time in the world for the fucker.
MesugakiBratTamer@reddit (OP)
Another thing I'll add to this:
• Side to side riders
"Like, just get back on the right side of the trail/path and stop blocking traffic"

I’ve had to break this habit because I do this when I’m going fast and just in my own little world. Sorry!

These are likely the same people that park their grocery cart on one side of the aisle and stand abreast of it to block the aisle completely while reading labels.

Night riders without lighting is probably the most annoying thing I have encountered. I have come up on 'dark' riders rather quickly several times. Usually (but not always) they have some type of reflectors on their bikes. But by the time I see the reflectors, I'm nearly upon them. And for some reason, most of these 'lightless' night riders like to wear black clothing.
lFightForTheUsers@reddit
Good 'ol salmoning. I think there was a genuine idea for it back in the day, like we're talking 80's and pre-80's, but since then it's been a terrible idea even discouraged in cycling clubs etc.

When I used to be willing to bike commute after dark, it was the ninja walkers on the bike trail, often walking on the wrong side.

Wrong way cyclists coming down steep paths into people making the slow grind up.
wturber@reddit
The wrong way cyclists I see are usually riding slowly. So no big deal to deal with. I suppose the problem will vary in degree depending on the specifics of the riding location. For me they are just a mild annoyance that I quickly forget about.
Revolutionary_Fly769@reddit
It’s very dangerous, doesn’t matter how slow they’re going. The car provides more than enough speed and size in a head on collision.
wturber@reddit
Dangerous for them. Not for me. Hence, not a pet peeve of mine.
MesugakiBratTamer@reddit (OP)
Also extremely dangerous when it's at or near intersections

I don't see many wrong way cyclists.
I see many wrong way pedestrians because they follow the faulty trail rules that tell them to keep left.
