Trucking saved my life. Ex heroin addict / crack head. Got myself together, got my CDL and got me a local food service gig in the SE US. Am able to care for four children and allow my wife to be a stay at home mom.
PianoConcertoNo2@reddit
Is this with health insurance?
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Yea, I pay about $75/wk for a family of 5. It’s decent.
WordSudden3465@reddit
Shit. I pay 216 bi weekly... good for you. But I swear everytime I look at local gigs payout and stuff I feel like im getting fucked.
MrJRL89@reddit
I say the same here am in Tampa Florida
HunxhoBussin-P@reddit
Yea the closest your getting for local is plant city and/or Lakeland
oDANGASMo@reddit
Usfoods we pay zero in for however big your family is, also till your kids turn 26....
Red-Falcon2727@reddit
What company if you don't mind ?
SuspiciousArugula857@reddit
Gordon Foodservice
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I’m not at gfs, they have great insurance though
50CalProof@reddit
That's amazing! That alone probably will make you stay until kids are over 25 tbh

I just left Mclane, I was paying almost $500 a month for only myself
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
That’s insane
ShoddySpace5680@reddit
That’s local????? Holyshit I need a different job 😭
Appalachias-Hero@reddit
I’m making between this and 3000 after tax doing food delivery service. A lot of bullshit but pays good and I’m home by night, we run elogs too
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Food service is where it’s at if you’re ok with working.
BigSchmitty@reddit
I’m also foodservice in the SE. Small town. Your weekly paycheck is my 2-week check. I work 55 hours a week (no OT), spend 2 night a week in a hotel. Off weekends. And I thought I was doing okay. :(
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Prolly because small town. What company, and what state/city?
BigSchmitty@reddit
Performance. South Georgia.
Appalachias-Hero@reddit
Same, Performance NE ohio. We run out of a drop lot.
BloodyRedF30@reddit
Where's the lot located? I'm in Cleveland.
Appalachias-Hero@reddit
We’re out of Ravenna off of 44. Straight down 271 to 14 into Ravenna.
BloodyRedF30@reddit
Damn your down there. Almost an hour from me.
Appalachias-Hero@reddit
Yeah, my buddy drives an hour from Mentor😂 there’s talks about getting a new lot around Twinsburg/Macedonia area because we’re growing so quick. But so far haven’t heard anything from management so who knows when that will be.
BloodyRedF30@reddit
Seems like all the big dogs are there in that area (National DCP (Dunkin Donuts, US Foods, etc.)
Appalachias-Hero@reddit
Can’t forget Chic fil a! 80k a start, pallet drop the cooler and dry, only wheel in the freezer. They also give raises based on years of having your CDL and not years with the company. Had a guy leave a beer place is was at, had 10 years of CDL experience and started off at $53 an hour
BloodyRedF30@reddit
Yeah there in Bedford Hts, closer to me. Applied but it seems like you have to know someone as a referral to get considered. Applied last year with no hope 😮💨😭. Damn $53 an hour sounds amazing. Might have to apply again. They're only 3rd shift btw. I'm making 90k doing hazmat but I think they make more at chic-fil-a tbh.
BigSchmitty@reddit
We have several types of pay. I’m on hourly because I put in a lot of miles (1700 a week), but drivers don’t get OT.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I’m in ga too. What city
EstablishmentSalt206@reddit
Union, that's all I'm gonna say.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I’m not union
EstablishmentSalt206@reddit
I know. We, as truckers, have more power than we know.
Keep on keeping on.
Trucker_Trent@reddit
That's why unions are all but dead in trucking. 🤔
EstablishmentSalt206@reddit
Why is that? Have you ever looked into it?
Trucker_Trent@reddit
In short, the motor carrier act of 1980 (which deregulated the industry) decimated the trucking industries profit margins. Unions require very healthy profit margins to sustain. Union companies folded one by one, most recently YRC.
EstablishmentSalt206@reddit
Fair. So is it better now?
The trucking industry has plenty of profit. WE, (The truckers), make this country function.
We have so much power that we don't flaunt and let these rich fucks walk all over us it's insane.
75 percent of the goods of America are moved by truck.
By CDL A holders.
The job may not be "glorious" but it truly is.
We make this shit work, we make this shit function, and WE NEED to respect ourselves.
EstablishmentSalt206@reddit
Also I wasn't replying to you, but what I said still applies.
Union.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I don’t really understand, but OK!
BigSchmitty@reddit
No union jobs in my small town. But yeah I hear that’s where it’s at.

I need a job that gives me 2000+ take home a week I’m tired of this 1200-1400 how do I get this I just have a year and a few months experience
Tomokomon@reddit
Brother I don't even make 800 a week 9 months in
dualshock5ps5@reddit
800 a week with a CDL. Damn son. Wendy's pays the same almost.
Get hired by a "Chicago" company. Build up your "hours" get good pay.
After 2 years you'll be able to work for other companies on w2 that pay pretty good.
20$ says I'm gonna get hate for this comment
Immediate_Regular@reddit
Hang in there, you're just shy of a year. If you don't already have all the endorsements, TWIC (or whatever the equivalent is for you if you're not US based), and passport get those sorted. Even if you never want to touch a tanker or a triple, even if you never want to cross a border they'll open doors just being there.
Keep your MVR/DAC/PSP clean. Start looking now for another carrier and drop applications as soon as you hit your year.
The money's out there if you can just hold on long enough to find it. There's drivers from every corner of the world here that'll give you leads when you're ready to start looking.
Tomokomon@reddit
Appreciate the advice. I'm working on getting my endorsements as soon as I possibly can.
The first 3 months were miserable. I actually lost money those months only getting 36 cents per mile
Until I hit 6 months and it got pushed up to 52 cents
is flat bed actually worth doing? if I did flat bed at my company i would actually go down to 48 cents per mile which ... Doesn't really make sense to me
My DL told me if I switched to reefer my pay would go up by 1 cent but that doesn't really seem worth having to deal with odd schedules+ cleaning the trailer out and sitting for hours like so many people here have mentioned. Not to mention being responsible for getting rid of the product if the customer rejects the load.
I'm not afraid of hard work. I just want to be paid fairly for my time and effort. something that I feel is Sorely lacking at my current company
Immediate_Regular@reddit
I don't know what company you're with but they're ripping you off big time. 36 CPM should be illegal, holy shit.
Flat bed at that place is probably not going to be worth the work. Are they going to pay you to tarp or any of the other extra work that goes along with flatbed?
Reefer is definitely not worth it at your company as I'm sure they're either not going to pay you detention/layover or they'll have it set so you're barely getting any money out of it. You'll have to play games with your clock to make any sort of money.
You're definitely getting screwed over where you're at but given how close you are to the one year mark I'd advise you to sit tight if you can. Get your endorsements and atart planning your exit.
With a year under your belt you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting away from the crap carriers. If you want to go local start looking around your home now so you can thoroughly research the carriers near you.
Tomokomon@reddit
Thanks, and I'm with swift. Starting minimum pay is 36 per mile on empty loads and on loads over 500 miles
Technically if I took a short haul the pay is much better starting out around 55cpm on loads less than 100 miles but I can count on one hand how many loads I took under 500 miles in my first 3 months of employment
Now a days I get 52cpm and my weekly miles rarely go over 1800. I'm honestly barely afloat.
Also factor in the $115 a week they take from me to pay back my schooling it hurts way more than it probably should.
Supposedly when my 12 months is up they will forgive the debt and start paying me back 50 dollars per week / 200 per month to stay but I'm definitely not sticking around long after my contract is up.
if you have any suggestions on good companies I'm happy do some research on them.
Immediate_Regular@reddit
If you can go local or find a small mom and pop near you that's what I'd shoot for, unfortunately I can't give you names for those but you can start by searching insert city trucking/logistics/freight etc companies and look. Next time you're home drive by any nearby large warehouses and manufacturing plants. See who has loads of trailers at those facilities. Chances are if you see a lot of XYZ Company trailers at the nearby widget plant XYZ Company has positions for OTR and shuttle drivers.
If you live in an ag heavy area look for seed and fertilizer companies nearby, they'll likely need drivers.
Find out who's hauling gas (think propane and such) out to rural areas. That's an easy gig that pays real well where I am (your mileage may vary of course).
Another area to look into that's frequently overlooked is aggregate hauling. This one is real location dependant so you might come up with nothing.
Search for the Teamsters local near you, give them a call and see if they can give you some leads. Landing a union gig is one way to never have to deal with job searching ever again.
Companies I've heard good things about either from the company's drivers or seen online: Dick Lavy, Don Hummer, Nussbaum, Decker Truck Lines, Erb. Also look into LTL carriers near you and if you can get on with Walmart you'll be set. It's possible to get on with UPS without doing dock work but I'm told that's rare, worth looking into though. Same with FedEx. Check into USPS as well.
I can't guarantee any of those are going to be your forever carrier but they'll be a damn sight better than what you're dealing with at Swift.
scottiethegoonie@reddit
36 CPM is crazy.
Jaycool10@reddit
Great Advice!
Desh282@reddit
U can try UNFI if they are in your area
TaperingRanger9@reddit
1200-1400 is good. That's about the average that I make. But sometimes when it's busy I've made about as much as OP. Stay with your current employer until you've got 3 years then see if Walmart or a similar good company will take you. Those guys make 110-130k per year.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
12-1400 take home is still good. I just got lucky with this gig.
AStoryAtThree@reddit
Yes but you work your ass off. That that's after a 65 plus hour week right?
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
This checks are between 55-68 hrs yes
Gonnahauntcha@reddit
What type of trucking is this? When you say good service what do you do
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I meant food
garr0510@reddit
Deliver food down the ramp with a dolly probably sysco us food or performance but probably sysco
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Na liftgate and pallet jack, and none of those companies
Wizard_with_a_Pipe@reddit
Do you have to unload yourself? I broke both legs 6 months ago and I'm cleared to go back to driving but I'm not sure I could load or unload myself.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
We use electric pallet, jacks, and lift gates
garr0510@reddit
I'm assuming this is sysco, which every route you don't always get a lift gate and you still sometimes have to take it off a pallet and onto a dolly and run it in better than down the ramp but still work.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
It is not
Wizard_with_a_Pipe@reddit
Nice! I could do that!
xRegretful@reddit
How much experience do you need? I currently have 2 months in box truck and maybe 3 in tractor trailer.
Also how hard is backing? I know with food service, I’ll see you guys in some tight delivery spots that I couldn’t perform.
I work many hours and am lucky to clear 1800gross
garr0510@reddit
No experience needed for sysco usually. And you learn to figure out the backing.

How’s food service treating your body? I was at US foods for 3 months before I quit back in the day. My body was so tired and sore every day
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
But yeah, back when I was at Gordon Food Service. It was a lot more harsh on my joints.

Networking with other drivers I meet. Make acquaintances with multiple people that you work at with each company you go to. And eventually, you know, dozens and dozens of drivers that you can talk to and get information from and download on other companies.
SeaAccountant1926@reddit
Yea if that’s food service good luck you going to work for every penny they always show the good side but don’t tell you the bad
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
There are many different types of work in food service. I use a pallet jack and liftgate to remove all the product from my trailer and I’m contracted with the restaurants we serviced that they break down the pallets. So by contract, I’m not obligated to touch one of those cases at all.

East_Indication_7816@reddit
with liftgate and manual or electric hand pallet jack? Did something like this and have to put my fingerprint on every case and box.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Electric. Yea we have a contract with the company that owns these restaurants that states they have to have a certain amount of people depending on the amount of cases the ordered to help break pallets down.
East_Indication_7816@reddit
then you dont just drop the pallets. You actually move the products with your hand?
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
I have stops I help at and stops that I don’t. All depends on if I want to or not
East_Indication_7816@reddit
You move those with your hand that's where the injury happens. You gonna get arthritis, forearm injury, back injury. The most exercise I do is turning the steering wheel and the landing gear crank.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Yea that’s cool dawg. Different strokes for different folks. Been doing food service for a long time now. It’s been good to me and I provide for my family with it. You can keep your steering wheel jockey position. I enjoy what I do.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Depends how fast I want to get done with the route. According to the contract I’m not obligated to no.

Thanks for the info. Looking to up my pay myself. Doing around 1150 a week for Home Depot operating a flatbed and forklift doing home delivery. Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)

I did food service for almost 4 years. Hardest job I ever did physically running up and down the ramp, no lift gates, 53’ trailers loaded to the brim but the money was good and home every night with the kids. Now I haul cement and my ash in pneumatics locally, still home every night and local, little bit of pay cut but worth it. My knees and back appreciated it. Kids come first though, much respect. I was in a place to take the pay cut and be fine, if I couldn’t I’d still be running that ramp doing my 30k+ steps a day.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit (OP)
Yea them knees be screaming! Luckily I got out of ramp and cart delivery.
