Custom Headliner

I wanted to share my custom headliner job, just finished up this afternoon! Going to replace the foam insulation in my roof today and then hopefully getter fully installed by tonight.

In total it cost me about $70 for the faux fur from Fabricville and $40 for the spray adhesive from Canadian Tire. In retrospect I probably used way more adhesive than necessary, but I just really wanted to make sure it wasn’t going anywhere since the fabric is a bit heavier than the original fabric that was in it.

I’ve got a 1985 Mercury Grand Marquis so the cardboard insert is 41 years old and still holding strong. 💪🏻

That is fantastic. Both in taste, and in execution.

The foam is a pain in the arse. Did you replace the foam before putting on the fur? Or did you just attach the fur to the board?

I just attached it to the board, I figured it’s thick enough that anything else might be overdoing it and make it harder to get back in. But where it’s some kind of cardboard I was prepared to just make a brand new insert if something got messed up or if I ever want to change the fabric to something else.

It sounds like its no big deal but a lot of light reflects and disperses off the ground, you see the effects in a few months on sensitive materials such as spray foam, but of course different materials handle it differently

Just a word of caution: don't do this with cheap faux fur.

I made a white faux fur package tray for my car when I was a teenager. White fur package trays were a big thing in '50s/60s traditional kustoms, and I was turning my '66 Buick into a Bellflower/pre-lowrider type mild kustom. (Yes, custom with a "k", iykyk)

Anyways, I spent all afternoon cutting out the hardboard, gluing down the fur, staples on the under side, installed it with nice stainless trim screws, etc. I was pretty proud of the look when it was done! So I pile my buddies in the car to show it off and cruise down to the local truck stop for some burgers and shakes. We get on the highway, and all roll the windows down. This was a 4dr hardtop, so to be cool, you need all the windows up, or all the windows down, of course.

Well as soon as the windows go down, that fake fur explodes and the whole car is a tornado of white polyester fibers, I can't see, everyone is choking and gagging with mouths and nostrils and eyes full of the stuff. Car is all over the road, everyone is yelling...

we finally get the windows rolled back up, and manage to get to our destination. While the guys are inside ordering aome grub, I pulled that SOB out and threw it straight in the dumpster around back. I still do love the look of a fur package shelf, but will only buy the best quality stuff I can get, and run the material through the washing machine several times to get all the loose fibers out before assembly.

I just finished wrapping the smaller side panels for the back, so with that and the headliner between 4-5 hours. I think the hardest part of wrapping your own headliner is getting it in and out of the car honestly
