Eurovision: How come Balkan countries never win?
Posted by wouldudoitforme@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 118 comments
I’m an American but I’ve been watching Eurovision since I was little and I noticed that Balkan countries often get overlooked and or don’t do as well as western countries. Ukraine won 3 times, Russia, Serbia and Greece all won once, and that’s about it. I can’t tell if I’m just biased cuz I love Balkan/Slavic music or if this contest just favors western countries more… Or is it because they joined later?
Some of my all time fav entries that I think should’ve won or at least been in the top 3 include:
* Serbia: Nije ljubav stvar (it did make top 3 though 2012), Oro (2008), Ramonda (2004), Mila (2025)
* Moldova: Hora din Modolva (2009), Soarale si luna (2023) Boonika bate toba, Sunstroke Project (2010) (epic sax guy!!)
* Bosnia: Ljubav Je (2016)
* Bulgaria: Bones (2018), If love was a crime(2016), Love unlimited (maybe not a winner but catchy)
* Armenia: Jan Jan (2009), Qéle,Qélé (2008)
Montenegro also has a ton of good songs…

Eurovision isn't really a contest, to be honest. Not even nationally. You never get the big names of contemporary pop music applying for it. The people who end up in the contest are from the same cliques (usually they are either unknowns or has-beens), and then the voting system is kind of a joke, and also politically motivated. One or two years ago they straight up made up the numbers... It's something you watch for the camp, but not as a real contest that represents the best or most popular music in Europe.
Novel_Plum@reddit
Yep. They changed Romania's vote so that Ukraine gets 12 points instead of Moldova.
74C5@reddit
It depends on the country. Italy and Ukraine always send one of the most popular singers in their country which is also why they tend to be in the top 10.
Bicou3190@reddit
Agree. It's sad we are not able to send one of our famous French touch artists (except Sébastien Tellier 2007, but it was way too early). And with UK being hated on the televote, I can imagine Ed Sheeran or Adele getting a 0 point, which would be absurd.
technotronica@reddit
Camp! That's so true 😁
crivycouriac@reddit
That’s maybe the case for Romania, certainly not for some other countries
QuietQueerRage@reddit
Source for the voting scandal below. In the English-language press, they claim Romania's vote was not taken into consideration. In reality, they changed the country who was awarded 12 points, based on what they wanted. https://www.impact.ro/reactia-oficiala-a-tvr-in-scandalul-voturilor-de-la-eurovision-de-ce-a-lipsit-de-fapt-eda-marcus-regulile-au-fost-schimbate-in-timpul-jocului-357489.html
Outrospect@reddit
I mean, you have countries that always go straight to the final. You have jury votes. You have Russian ban while Israel competes.
It's not really a fair and unbiased competition 🤷♂️

Serbian song MOLITVA, won 2007, but its true, its political contest, and they ristricted the way exYu countries wote...
fuckitsayit@reddit
Yea it was actually rly good too which is very anomalous for Euro vision
Design_pattern@reddit
Baby Lasagna also deserved to win 2024
notthatevilsalad@reddit
Eurovision is and has always been a political stunt and never really about the music.
slaveshipoffailure@reddit
This guy has🧃 in second place and everybody's ignoring it lmao
Specialist_Elk140@reddit
I'm surprised he doesn't have them in 1st place considering he's American and ruled by the ZOG machine.
Specialist_Elk140@reddit
Serbia won the 2007 one and nearly the 2008 one too I think.
wanderingtaoist@reddit
It's Eurovision, ffs. Everyone is watching it ironically. No one cares about the winners.
RNAREPLICATOR@reddit
I asked google AI to calculate their winrates (number of wins / number of participations) and compare it to what you would expect if it was completely random. If we assume there are 30 countries participating (i know this fluctuates so this is not perfect) then you would have 3% chance of winning. Serbia has a winrate of 5.88% (1/17), Greece 2.22% and Turkey 2.94%, but Crotia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro have never won. So the combined winrate ends up at 1.34% which is lower than expected by chance (3%).
Are their songs generally worse? This can never be objectively verified..
Are they not part of the biggest "voting bloc" (countries that vote for each other due to friendship)? Probably not
Is it a combination of many reasons? Yes
Can we ever know how much weight each reason has? No
Is epic sax guy epic? Yes!
loco_mixer@reddit
well only the best winner song of all time is serbian so i dont know what you are talking about
also, israel should be banned
Petger@reddit
I think you mixed up the Ramonda year. Anyways I also loved that song and I’m sad it didn’t get the recognition it deserved
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
Oh did I? My bad. Yeah it’s a great song I love Teya Dora!
Petger@reddit
Love her too
Substratas@reddit
I believe there are two reasons, at least for Albania:
Albanians have incredible vocal power, but they lack creativity & the music they produce always sounds either generic, outdated or boring. A powerful voice might get you to the finals but a good song will make you win the competition.
The bias. Western Europe has historically been more united than the East so they’re more likely to favour ”the greatest one in their circle” unless an outsider’s song is extraordinary. Eastern Europeans dot not have the same sense of unity so they are more likely to give their vote to either a country that has some kind of ethnic / linguistic ties to them, or to western country - but that is changing.
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
About #1…Not this year though. “Nân” is a masterpiece. My first time giving Albania 12p. What do you think of it?
Substratas@reddit
Literally perfection.

wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
She ate on Traitors!!! Brandi was lowkey right when she said Rinna should get back on RHOBH and do absolutely nothing, get the money and go home. but i’m torn cuz i also think she’s too good for them lol
Substratas@reddit
Gurlll staaahp 😭😭😭 I never thought I’d meet a fellow Rinna stan on Reddit, let alone in a Balkan sub 😍
Yeah, some weeks ago she also said in an interview, once again, that ”she’ll never get back on RHOBH”. I need the old cast back so badly bc I think the show isn’t as good anymore… 😪
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
LITERALLY. Ikr??! How crazy is that hahah. It’s so random! Here I was thinking that the craziest thing was finding a Desperate Housewives fan on the American Horror Story sub 🤣 This is even more random than that! And omg I agree 100% what a snooze fest. Dorit and Tilly carried the season but the whole season was basically just dorito smoking her ciggies (which i loveszz) and vile kyle trynna make her look crazy smh. Back to Rinna tho, my understanding is that she jokingly quick and Andy actually let her go and that pissed her off, a mix of that and the fact that they made her out to be the villain but like in an ugly kinda way…
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
😍
OtherwiseMongoose296@reddit
Because you have horrible ballads 9/10 times. We get it, love is hard and you need a woman in a long dress to sing about it sort of like Celine Dion, but not managing to compete with her at all.
Humble_House_9900@reddit
Are we going to pretend that the zionist regime isn't on this guy's scoreboard?

Baby Lasagna was robbed…That’s one of the best Eurovision songs ever IMO.
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
I mean Croatia just got screwed over by mass Israeli manipulation of the public vote system. Not only did it take away the points potential for other artists which Baby Lasagna relied on to win, but the judges were also forced to give practically no jury votes to Israel, thus eliminating any competition for the jury points with the eventual winner.
Without that, Croatia would have won the 2024 contest. It’s just unfortunate but nothing intentionally malicious.
MartinBP@reddit
There was no manipulation, they ran ads which other countries did as well. Stop making BS excuses for losing with a meme song.
ESC-H-BC@reddit
The past year there were only three countries that didn't give any point to these bastatd maniac genocidals.
Croatia, Poland and Armenia. There's something interesting about it, there you need a real id to get a phone sim.
Vrboje@reddit
Montenegro gave 6 points through vote to Israel, I guarantee you that there wasn't a single Montenegrin that voted for them, much less to for them to get that much points
PhShivaudt@reddit

Montenegro, good songs? We’ve never had a good song except twice.
BadBasik@reddit
Well, Croatia almost won 2 years ago, the song still lives rent free in my head😅
Other than that, politics seem to have ramped up even more in the past 10-15 years, since we used to rank much higher before 2015.ž, for instance Serbia and Greece won, Balkans had a lot of second and third places, like Hari Mata Hari with Lejla from Bosnia.
MeditativeRaven@reddit
In a way, I guess you're right about joining later being a reason. But this doesn't apply to all Balkan countries. Only those that were part of the Eastern Block - under Soviet influence. And, I think we can extend it to some former Soviet Union countries as well. The reason these countries joined later is because they were literally isolated and suppressed for \~40 years (Yugoslavia was the only Eastern Block country who somehow joined). That has always been a thing: the West was allowed to develop, while the East couldn't. I brought this up because it's likely the reason why the West tends to look down on the East. I'm not saying everyone does that intentionally, but there is some sort of superiority complex there. The West sees itself as the pinnacle of progress and development (which, let's be honest, they kinda are, but only because history has been kinder to them) and feels threatened when the East is rising up. Even more so when considering who pumps the most money into the contest. That's why the Big 5 rule exists.
Speaking of money, that's also a reason why a lot of Eastern countries fly under the radar. It's no secret the budget is limited, so the staging might be more modest, thus not as eye-catchy. Televoting also costs money, so I can see people in the East being more reluctant to vote. Especially if they think it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, which tends to be the case.
There's also a matter of obscurity. Not many have heard much about the Balkan countries (except Greece and Turkyie), or some of the Eastern ones. It's related to the first paragraph. But yeah, basically it might be too unfamiliar to some, which might turn people away.
Ofc, foreign relations and politics play a role as well, which I'd say it's a weak point for the Balkans/Eastern Europe. Not that we don't vote for each other. At least, in Romania's case, afaik, we always give points to Moldova and vice-versa, if we can. But, as others pointed out, we're not as united.
Here's a little exercise: take a song from any Eastern country that you think it's a solid entry (from any year). If that same song came from the Big 5 or the Nordics, do you think there would be more hype around it? Would it have placed higher, or oven won the contest? We can do it in reverse as well: pick any song from a Western or Nordic country, that placed high in the finals, and imagine it coming from the former Eastern Block. Would the result be the same?
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
Yeah someone else mentioned the money, and that’s something I hadn’t thought of before. I forgot they have to host it if they win… makes so much sense now.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
I have no problem with Eurovision, nor do i think we were somehow screwed over in the past.
Imo, when Serbia had good songs, we either won, or were top 5.
We haven’t had any good songs in a while.
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
You don’t think any of the ones I mentioned were worth winning? :( or at least top 3

Based on seen last 10 years, mostly bias and sense of false superiority. Either that or pushing an agenda
I got nothing against Ukraine, but that win at the start of the war was clearly given to them as a political stunt, I mean, come on, song was absolutely nothing special
pandafrombehind@reddit
Song was cool, Ukraine has always been a powerhouse, yes there was solidarity, but that alone doesn't win
AmyGoldberg@reddit
Sure, with betting houses giving +90% winrate for Ukraine before the contest even started 🤣
pandafrombehind@reddit
oh no! the favorite won! scandal!
rydolf_shabe@reddit
song wasnt that bad but it definitely was not a winning song, also dont forget that england had a song about stopping the was and they got second place two. eurovision results are such a joke on god
MartinBP@reddit
Ukraine had one of the better songs that year.
Born_Name_6549@reddit
Eurovision is a contest, not a competition. Nobody goves a fuck about winning and most don't actually want to win. It's basically a bunch of drunk friends at a karaoke bar, and the winner has to buy drinks next week
wouldudoitforme@reddit (OP)
Tbh I kinda thought that too about their 2022 win, and I love the song but it was kinda on the nose.
neoniki@reddit

driftstyle28@reddit
Political song contest which even allows Isr*el to compete. Nothing to do with "Euro"Vision. Australia too, at this point we should let the US and China compete.
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
Eurovision is the perfect example of nepotism and politics. Nordic countries will win most of the time.
74C5@reddit
The Nordics only won 6 times in the last 20 years and half of those wins were by Sweden, one of the most influential pop music exporter in the world.
Iceland and Denmark half of the time don’t even make the final and Norway and Finland used to be contenders for the last place in the past before finally getting their act together in more recent times.
Mb_positive@reddit
They win when its politically appropriate, like in 1991, Croatia. The jury votes politically, and it always trumps popular vote.
ImamTrump@reddit
Because Eurovision is a pr campaign for the highest bidder. Simple as that.
