Will my circumcision ruin my checkride?
Posted by caca6969999@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 371 comments
Hi! So I am getting circumcised at my big age for personal reasons.
With my PPL checkride coming soon and me being on pain killers for a good week or so, will I need a letter or some kind of document aknowledging that I am good to fly? From the CARs, the only thing I can find is that only after general anaesthesia is a doctor’s approcal necessary.
Also. The c152 seats are really going to tickle that sensitive area, I’m scared.

To give you an actual, real answer, the FAA publishes guides for OTC medications, and guidelines for AMEs regarding prescription drugs.
https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/medications/OTCMedicationsforPilots.pdf
https://www.faa.gov/ame_guide/media/DNI_DNF_tables.pdf
The real answer is just ask your AME. If I ever have anything going on medically that might prevent me to fly, I just send a quick email asking how long to wait before flying again.

caca6969999@reddit (OP)
Checkride will be about 2 weeks after the surgery. Meaning I "should" be alright? Though I am unsure if I will be considered legal to fly
ValeoRex@reddit
There's a list somewhere from the FAA where you can look up various drugs, their half-life, and how long you need to wait before flying again. I very rarely take anything so I dont have it on-hand but its where I learned you have to wait like 60 hours or something crazy after taking NyQuil.
hobbycollector@reddit
Benadryl too. 60 hours.
basilect@reddit
IMO the FAA is being too conservative with the times & the dosages, but they are 100% right in concept that you should not be piloting an airplane on that shyt
Small_Chicken1085@reddit
I had an AME tell me I can take Benadryl daily
songgao@reddit
Diphenhydramine is a first generation antihistamine and these are notorious for causing drowsiness. Second generation antihistamines such as Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra are supposedly much better cause they typically don't go through blood-brain barrier. However this is different from person to person. I personally still feel tired after taking second generation antihistamines.
https://www.webmd.com/allergies/difference-between-first-generation-antihistamines-second-generation-antihistamines
randombrain@reddit
Sure, you can take Benadryl daily...
you just can't fly on those days. Or the five days after those days.
SATSewerTube@reddit
That AME is very wrong.
Benadryl, and any sleep aids that have diphenhydramine hydrochloride, is absolutely a 60 hour wait.
willpc14@reddit
I used to get IV Benadryl as a pre-med for my infusions and that shit would knock me out cold in minutes. Nearly as effective as propofol.
arbybruce@reddit
I started refusing it back when I was getting infusions. The 3-hour infusions already messed up my day, no sense in missing more time by sleeping for half the day after
centexAwesome@reddit
NyQuil Zzz AKA ZzzQuil and Benadryl both contain diphenhydramine hydrochloride.
No-Brilliant9659@reddit
If only the FAA was the controlling authority for OP
P0Rt1ng4Duty@reddit
You don't have to take all of the pain killers. The sooner you stop taking them, the longer the gap before your flight.
Emotional-Ebb9390@reddit
Specifically, you can hoard them and use them for when you are in pain but ever since the opioid epidemic they get really stingy about giving out the good stuff.
I've got a few hydros left for next time I sprain something. yum yum yum

Dude. I am so sorry, but no. You will not be good to fly. I was circumcised the summer I turned 16 (lmao) for personal reasons, and you will NOT want ANYTHING touching the area for at least three weeks. For a month I walked around butt-naked with a sheet wrapped around me, like a shampoo commercial. When you do get back to it, be fucking careful. When school started my stitches were still in, and while I was walking the mile in gym, my basketball shorts snagged a stitch and plucked it out. That pain was insane. I'm only telling you this in detail cause it got me fucked up and I don't want you to feel that pain.
caca6969999@reddit (OP)
Yo ngl the post was serious but meant to be funny at the same time, I just turned 18 and your comment is scaring the shit out of me lmao. I actually HAVE to get that circumcision so I’m really really hoping i can maybe do the checkride before the surgery…
freshlysaltedwound@reddit
Why do you have to get it?
lucky_chaparro@reddit
Assuming OP is in a situation like mine and my Dad/brother, some men have a foreskin that will not fully retract, physically. Dick too dummy thicc. So you have to get it circumcised cuz your dickhead won’t be manageable in a hygiene/health sense otherwise
freshlysaltedwound@reddit
There’s stretching and steroid creams you can do to fix it though.
lucky_chaparro@reddit
Yeah man I had to get it too, it cost a whole summer but I was glad I didn't need to heal at school. Best of luck you can knock out the checkride before the surgery, and I hope it goes well regardless.
CFIIROTOR@reddit
I recommend watching "Eric Clopper: Sex and Circumcision" on YouTube. It is considered the ultimate video on the topic.
jdankks@reddit
Don’t do it….. As someone who has experienced multiple check-rides and only one adult circumcision you can not do them with any overlap at all.
Any updraft downdraft or even change in pitch will be hell for you. Highly recommend suspending training until after you are not only fully healed, but have adjusted to the new sensitivity.
Taking the bandage off day 5 was more stressful than any part of my aviation career so far, only time I’ve ever had a panic attack in my entire life.

Narcotic pain medications are not permitted to take while flying.
You can look up your exact medication at the Aviator Search Medication Database
Also refer to this FAA document of the DNI meds (see pain meds). Generally you need to look up this medication and wait 5 half lives (different for each med) between last dose and when you can resume flying.
I'm a HIMS AME, you can reach out if you have specific questions about a particular medication.

You’ll have to do a new W&B
TobyADev@reddit
My partner’s just had it done. Do not fly for a few weeks. He’s on painkillers a fair bit and a lot of discomfort even with them
Also, being on painkillers and flying is stupid
Also you’ll prob have to tell ur AME
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
How long on painkillers ? I had a knee replacement and used painkillers for 2 days. Theres no way getting some skin trimmed back hurts worse than getting bones cut off.
TobyADev@reddit
More the discomfort he said that it causes
And getting in / out of light aircraft in confined spaces.. tricky
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
So he's on painkillers and still flying ? That doesn't sound like a good idea.
TobyADev@reddit
Nooo he’s a train guard lol. Hes grounded himself and only just gone back 3 weeks in

You getting circumcised in the cockpit?
honyocker@reddit
oh FFS, just ask your doctor. And take your weird need to tell the world about your adult circumcision to a NSFW sub where you can explore your fantasies & dirty talk properly. Sheesh. And also - WHY would you cut off all those perfectly good nerve endings? Nevermind. Ask your doctor.

In all seriousness, you likely need to get a Dr approval saying you’re good. Check FAA requirements for after surgery. Then if you can pass the imsafe check list. And make sure any pain killers are approved for flight.

The FAA publishes both a DO NOT FLY list to AMEs covering prescription and illicit drugs, and an OTC half life list for OTC pain killers. Wait 5x the pharmacological half life before flying. The guidance is reasonably clear.
This is the AME guidance https://www.faa.gov/ame_guide/media/DNI_DNF_tables.pdf
This is the OTC guidance https://www.faa.gov/pilots/medical_certification/media/OTCMedicationsforPilots.pdf
This is the general guidance https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/2022-01/Pilots%20and%20Medications.pdf
NoNeighborhood948@reddit
that’s not what ur cfi meant when they told you to trim
Can_Not_Double_Dutch@reddit
Off the pain meds then wait one month to ensure no negative reactions to medicine. For sure don't fly while on pain meds.
bailaowai@reddit
Well hang on - I guess you’re assuming painkillers in this context are prescription not OTC. If OTC there is no way that you need to wait 1 month. The FAA publishes a half life list for OTC that includes painkillers and the general recommendation is 5 times the half life after the last dose. Nothing on that list would be one month. For prescriptions it’s also 5x half life after last dose. But I’m a little hazy on whether you need to get an AME to tell you the half life or clear you or if you just look up the half life yourself. It’s probably a little harder to find the pharmacological half life of a prescription painkiller.
palbertalamp@reddit
Best of luck on your flight , study hard right up to the cut off date.
Sorry I don't have a better tip for you..

Passing your check ride so that you can get rid of the dickhead in the right seat doesn’t really equate to a circumcision.

I thought this was shitty flying for a sec
But he seems real
Uhmm, do the check ride before you get your dick skin trimed
runway31@reddit
Do it. Pass your checkride while under the effects of circumcision, be a legend
grumpyoldman10@reddit
You’re doing it wrong, sir. If you wanted to fly with your guns out, you should’ve joined the Air Force.
canuck791@reddit
You should probably wait a month or so bro.
V35TN-BO@reddit
Do Not Fly. Airmen should not fly while using any of the medications in the Do Not Issue section above or using any of the medications or classes/groups of medications listed below. All of these medications below may cause sedation (drowsiness) or impair cognitive function, seriously degrading pilot performance. This impairment can occur even when the individual feels alert and is apparently functioning normally - in other words, the airman can be "unaware of impair."
For aviation safety, airmen should not fly following the last dose of any of the medications below until a period of time has elapsed equal to:
• 5-times the maximum pharmacologic half-life of the medication; or
• 5-times the maximum hour dose interval if pharmacologic half-life information is not available.
For example, there is a 30-hour wait time for a medication that is taken every 4 to 6 hours (5 times 6)

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:
