Is the whole "guns in walmart" thing really necessary?

Usually things like that have specialist stores, and obviously gun stores exist and are everywhere. You wouldn't see an isle in a regular supermarket selling ladders, bathtubs, etc. So why have a gun aisle in one? Enthusiasts and hunters will be going to gun stores and non-enthusiasts might only buy one in a lifetime for home defence. Surely it must just not be worth the hassle of all the licensing and fees involved
