Local gig

In no way shape or form is this intended to be a bragging post but honestly curious on people’s opinion. Is this decent pay for a local home daily gig in the Midwest? Indiana, specifically.
Former_Difficulty_48@reddit
Try Florida where companies are still trying for 16 per hr
MrJRL89@reddit
Say It Again, Am in Tampa, Florida They trying pay Truckers $22/hr to do 60 to 70 hours Florida Is Fucking Joke trying my best get into the oilfield.
Former_Difficulty_48@reddit
Get into fuel delivery. 100k plus a yr but u will work. Still better then beer or food delivery. I'm going from flat bed to fuel hopefully soon
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
That is robbery at 16 an hour!
Former_Difficulty_48@reddit
I currently make 80k 60 ish hrs a week treasure coast florida. I was offered 28 per hr 70 hrs a weeks to haul hazmat but I didn't like the interview. I want to get into tanker hazmat but in the south the pay is still low . But compared to other jobs it's very high
Ok_Bug_6470@reddit
Do you do more than sleep and go to work if the answer is yes that’s a great gig, bro especially if you get benefits
bubble353@reddit
I don’t understand doing local as a company driver I never will. You can earn this doing million other jobs that do not involve sitting in traffic all day. I would advise you to find something else before you mess up your back and then your entire body for this amount of money. I would advise you to either buy a truck or just move on from trucking . You can find a solid day cab for $20,000. And your net income will probably double or triple. Trucking is not a good job, you have no way of going up the ladder, no way to progress unless you buy a truck and have ambition to buy multiple. It’s better that you do some sort of a trade where you can progress and eventually turn into a business your life will get a lot better.
Oh, and told the people that say being an owner operator is not good, You are so wrong.
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
I’m not disagreeing on certain aspects of this but why should I buy a truck if “trucking is not a good job”? Also, most days I’m barely putting 30 miles on my truck a day so it’s not like I’m stuck sitting it all day long, either. Of course I know there are other ways of making more money but the the whole idea of this was to get other peoples experiences/opinions on if my pay was reasonable for the type of work that I do.
bubble353@reddit
Because if you bought a daycab and hauled containers, youd be making 700-800$ a day doing 100-200 miles. 1400$ is too low of a pay for somebody operating a commercial vehicle, you can make this money driving a school bus and working nine months a year and five hours a day.
nick_soccer10@reddit
Not bad at all. Is it no touch? If ya wanna make a bunch more go to Sysco.. you will bust your ass but you will make some good $ and still be home each night.
Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit
I looked into Sysco near me and they don’t seem to be paying well. I think it matters where you are.
nick_soccer10@reddit
Don’t let the Sysco base rate push you away… it’s not hourly. My base is $28 but I average $42 an hr. 48-50 hrs a week, $2200-$2400 a week before taxes.
trucksarekewl@reddit
If wasn't for all the nonsense that wouldn't be too bad lol
nick_soccer10@reddit
You ain’t lying… Sysco is the most stressful job out there!
Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit
Yeah $28 is what it’s saying for my area. But what about the job do you find stressful? I don’t mind working but I don’t like working in dysfunctional environments with unrealistic expectations.
nick_soccer10@reddit
It is what you make it. Food isn’t for everyone. It takes so many moving parts to have a smooth day…. Spotter gets you the right trailer, selector selects it well, loader loads it right, if you get a power jack or not, then it’s the routing…. It’s jus a lot of you aren’t used to fast pace chaos
trucksarekewl@reddit
Yea when I was looking for local work I applied to them. Manager guy calls back and starts off with "yea youll be a local regional team driver" damn near ended the call mid sentence but I let him finish lol
nick_soccer10@reddit
Never heard of Sysco having regional team drivers… been here 21 years. You sure it wasn’t sygma?
trucksarekewl@reddit
Nope us foods for sure, not too far from my house. Sygma is across town and was too far to commute
nick_soccer10@reddit
Eww us foods
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it’s drop and hook no touch
nick_soccer10@reddit
Not bad at all man.
GiantEnemaCrab@reddit
Yeah local is best. I get $35 per hour + overtime after 40 at Pepsi and I get to sleep in my own bed and not care about gas prices lol.
Am I reading that they aren't paying you overtime until after 45 hours?
ID_Poobaru@reddit
Been thinking about making the switch to Pepsi from Amazon, local one near me pays $29 to start and Amazon caps me out at $27.50.
How many hours on average are you working a week?
GiantEnemaCrab@reddit
42-44ish but I am lazy and only work 4 days per week. In the winter I go down to 3 days. Some guys like to do 5 and max their clock at 60.
If Pepsi is advertising 29 they might be talking about training pay with a 2 per hour raise once you get out on your own. However they give annual raises and everyone is at the same pay indefinitely. The benefit to seniority is you can pick your own routes and vacation time easier.
You also get free soda / energy drinks / tea / water / gatorade.
Also Pepsi is a huge company and individual regions will vary.
death-eater69@reddit
Yeah my location is 29.50 currently. 35 is crazy, where are you located that they pay that much?
GiantEnemaCrab@reddit
New England and yeah it blows my mind as well lol.
death-eater69@reddit
Gotta be cost of living right? I’m in Kentucky and I imagine it’s cheaper living here than in New England
ID_Poobaru@reddit
Interesting. Doesn't sound as bad as food service does. I gotta ask the local pepsi guys when I run into them at the truck stops to see how they like it.
Definitely seems like a better long term gig than Amazon does with pay and OT.
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
You shit in your bed?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
That’s pretty good. I wish this company would do OT like that. So it just happens they only pay you OT on Sundays. Rest of the week is straight pay. You usually average around 45-55 hours a week.
raddrobb67@reddit
You should contact the flsa about the overtime issue. Unless you are exempted in some way. It's illegal not to pay time and a half after working 40 hours.
CaptCooterluvr@reddit
FLSA doesn’t apply to truck drivers for whatever reason, outside of a handful of states or union contracts that require it there’s no requirement we be paid OT.
raddrobb67@reddit
Sounds like the trucking industry paid some people off.
PlsCheckThisBush@reddit
Of course, it’s the political way sadly. Started with Jimmy Carter, then Reagan went on to bust unions as hard as possible. If they classify us as “unskilled labor” they can get around a lot of laws for paying us fairly hence why we get CPM instead of $/hr. Got held up in traffic for 12 hours from a terrible crash with no way around? Hope you enjoy 12 unpaid hours. But the shareholders are turning record profits and can buy their favorite politicians/lawmakers so nothing will change until the old heads die off.
Appearance-Complete@reddit
We’re supposed to be jumping up to that in my area by the end of the year since were the lowest paid out of all states
Corkymon87@reddit
We're $45something/hour with OT after 8 and on Saturdays. Double time on Sunday but ive never worked one in 15 years. 4 weeks paid vacation (45 hour weeks), 8 paid sick days and can take 3 months off every winter if you want once you have 5-8 years of seniority. Driving ready-mix truck
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
See I came from a union background to get into the local stuff. I was driving a dump truck for teamsters 35 an hour but same OT regulations you just mentioned. Benefits were good too and all on paper it sounds good but like you said I hardly worked any Saturdays and never a Sunday. Some weeks I brought home really good money then some I barely made 200-400 due to rain outs. It was too wishy washy for me and I just wanted a more stable, consistent income.
Alarmed-Internet4135@reddit
Yes that is about normal for Indiana. I’m here work at night hauling gas do 32.25 an hour and Ot after 40. Usually average about 53 hours a week give or take a few depending on how fast I wanna go.
TheRiftsplitter@reddit
I do 70 hours a week for 1400
Gore1695@reddit
I'm making $40 an hour local but the checks aren't good because we get very little OT.
It's kind of nice working 40 hour weeks and it's hard to leave when the highest starting hourly around here is $32. But I would make more at $32 with a lot of OT.
Shrug. Don't know what to do
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Depends how you want to make your money, I reckon. My personally, I don’t wanna work 60-70 hours a week to make 100k but I respect the people that don’t mind it and that’s what they wanna do, ya know what I mean? I think 40 an hour is great pay but again, everyone’s concept on a “good pay” is different.
MonkeyDxn@reddit
I work 60 to 70 hours a week in the warm months and far less after the holidays so it balances out.. still get bout 100k
AsphaltPirate74@reddit
Don't take that for granted, the highest paid local job in my area is $28/hr which is garbage.
LyubviMashina93@reddit
Pepsico paying 25/hr by me... Fucking joke...
AsphaltPirate74@reddit
Fuck that. I did Moffett, the flatbed trucks with the forklift on the back, and they paid me $25/hr, way easier than beverage service. They were going to give me a raise to $28/hr too.
freightliner_fever_@reddit
when i was local at my job, i got 67k a year salary (i think it was around 32 and hour) and i worked like 30 hours a week. it was pretty nice. i took an out of town position here tho and now i get 72k a year plus 246$ a night for per diem (we use hotels and day cabs). mon-tues, off wed, then thurs-fri and off weekends. still working around 40 or less hours. i’ll never give it up no matter how shitty it can be sometimes
BrattySubSam@reddit
My guy, are they hiring?
freightliner_fever_@reddit
literally just filled our in town position. won’t be long til we’re hiring again tho. 2 years max.
fresnogt@reddit
I’d do 40 hours at $40 an hour.
probablydeadsooon@reddit
I am also interested. 40 hours a week ain't bad for truckin
Appearance-Complete@reddit
Seriously. Most local gigs are easily 50-60 a week
Gotsnuffy@reddit
What company you working for?
GroundbreakingSir386@reddit
Cheaper then wife cheating on you and divorce
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Been there done that too, unfortunately
BrattySubSam@reddit
Does units = hours?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Yes it’s hours
Iwytsmd7@reddit
I don’t get paid hourly, but i average over $600 per day, no damn way I’m leaving lol highest paying hourly local job near me is $27/hour. I’m paid percentage, but i average over $50 per hour
Big_Chemical_5165@reddit
Is that flatbed OTR? What company if you don't mind me asking?
Iwytsmd7@reddit
It’s a small company, only 6 drivers, 7 including the owner. Technically local, we just run in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, but still sleep in the truck 3-5 nights a week. I’m home right now since I’m delivering 30 minutes down the road from my house. It was one of those “diamond in the rough” situations. Met a guy at a truck stop, asked me how much experience I had, said his dad owns a few trucks and we talked about details, negotiated starting pay, and that’s about it. Idk where you live, but trying to look within 100 miles of where you live for those small companies. Craigslist is usually good for that since you can search in a radius around your house. Also, a friend of mine found a great job posting his experience in a couple of those facebook groups, one called “CDL drivers looking for employment” and “CDL drivers looking for work”
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
That is great pay, I don’t blame you a bit. I always worried getting paid percentage I would be getting screwed as I am not the best with numbers but sounds like to me you are getting paid more than fair. A lot more than myself
Iwytsmd7@reddit
Percentage when doing flatbed is usually the way to go, unless they’re offering 80 cpm or more. My first trucking job was 25% of the load, but I was only getting about 2200-2500 miles per week, but if I broke down my pay, I was averaging 82 cpm. If you’re getting high miles doing dry van or reefer, even 65-70cpm is decent. At the end of the day you gotta do what’s best for you. Idk what’s best for me because I’m insane and I’ll work 24 hours straight just to make $800 🤣 then sleep 10 hours when the ADHD hyperfocus wears off lol
Libiido@reddit
I can't even get that with almost two years experience and otr. You have found the jackpot. 👏🏾👍🏾
Few_Interaction1327@reddit
Wish my local gig paid overtime. We have the ag exemption and run under Texas intrastate rules. 12 hours of driving and only 8 hours off required between shifts.
EquivalentRude9364@reddit
Looks like Gemini stubs. Ask me how I know
nastyzoot@reddit
$31 is decent. If it's M-F daylight hours then it's really not bad. Depends on the work too. Are you unloading shingles or doing 3 drop and hooks?
The most pressing question? How are you getting your health insurance and is there no 401(k)?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
It is dayshift and I usually do 6-8 drop and hooks a day. There is health insurance that will kick in soon which is 70 a week and they will match 6% 401k which I will take advantage of.
nastyzoot@reddit
Not bad at all man. That's 1400 net will be $900 before ya know it lol. Make sure you maz out that 401k. 6% is good free money.
Severe-Island-845@reddit
Seems like you don’t have a 401k?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Not yet, it will kick in here soon at 6 % which they will match
ThankYouSavior-@reddit
I’m doing 6 days a week. Peak season is about 4 months a year which I run local DMV from 6 am to about 1 PM latest. Most days I’m done by noon or earlier. Rest of the year I’m doing 6-11AM. winter sometimes I only work 2-3 hours. Great gig. Wish I had 2 off days but I refuse to complain. I’m pulling 1150$ a week.
DANO8503@reddit
How much are kicking in to 401K?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Nothing yet being that I’m a pretty new hire but they match up to 6% which I will take advantage of.
Former_Difficulty_48@reddit
What states are local 40 per hr. In South Florida 25 per hr is considered good but that's at 60 or 70 hrs a week with ot
Zealousideal_Wave760@reddit
Do local that’s pretty decent bud 🤙 what kinda gig is it? Fuel hauling? Flatbed?
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
Dry van, drop and hook. No touch
Appearance-Complete@reddit
Damn you got a nice one right there
GrapeAlchemist@reddit
The dream
ThanksALotBud@reddit
I work in manufacturing making $24 per hr with OT after 40 hrs. I typically work 60 to 70 hrs a week. Work is not hard and I'm home daily with paid 4 weeks of time off and holidays
I work on the manufacturing floor, drive a forklift and sometime drive a B-class truck.
Last year I made $100k
There are definitely opportunities out there without the stress of OTR.
trucksarekewl@reddit
60-70hrs a week is not exactly a selling point
ThanksALotBud@reddit
I wasn't selling, on the other hand, I run out of shit to watch on YT
jhandley91@reddit (OP)
I agree, I respect the hustle, but if I worked 60-70 hours a week i would easily make over 100k for arguably easier work. I worked manufacturing for 12 years and I absolutely earned every penny.
Outlandah_@reddit
I’m making $26, and I live in MA. Kill me please lol
jecastro_2000@reddit
I work bottom dumps in cali and my take home every 2 weeks are between $1600-2200. Depending on OT. Regular days are about 10 hours busier on closer to 12- 14 hours
Feeling-Cap-7210@reddit
I’m at $29 hr but don’t get any OT
RedimidoSoy1611@reddit
thats really good actually, especially midwest I take home roughly $1100 @ 55 hours a week in CA so be thankful!
chris_gnarley@reddit
I make $35.5 and work about the same hours as a single person with no dependents, no 401K, health insurance or any other company deductions aside from dental ($10/week) and take home about $1,535 in California.
adidaman@reddit
That's like 30 dollars per hour with ot. Not the flex you think it is
morgottkev@reddit
What a dingus
Gore1695@reddit
He literally says it's not a flex in his post
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
Its right there it says rate 31
MidLifeChanger@reddit
If your company has openings and you mention the location I presume they will get some applicants for those jobs. It also depends on what you do (fuel, LTL, dropping off product at stores). If this is an average week, most drivers don't touch 90k.
