Garmin Pilot 50% Discount for CFIs

Garmin has started a discount program for Garmin Pilot called Right Seat Rewards. The signup instructions are here: Right Seat Rewards.
This could move even more people away from ForeFlight, as their discount program was slashed a few months ago.
mhammaker@reddit
That's honestly brilliant. Get the CFI's hooked and they'll get their students hooked. A single 50% discount could create dozens of full price new users.
320sim@reddit
Yep, that’s why professional software companies like Adobe and Autodesk provide steep student discounts. Get people hooked young and your product becomes industry standard
dopexile@reddit
Yeah, it is smart. Part of the reason I always went with Foreflight is that that is what all of the CFIs and flight schools knew about, so if I needed to ask a question, it was no problem.
Nnumber@reddit
It also means they have recognized the weakness of PE chasing short term returns and are playing the long game. Good for them.

My Foreflight subscription is expired. I’m currently finishing up CPL but have not renewed yet. What are your thoughts about Garmin pilot?
Raven21X@reddit
Been using GP a long time. My all time favorite feature is the weather station overlay. Gives all the weather info for the region quickly at a glance without having to cycle through multiple layers like the other apps. A bit of a learning curve to learn how to read them but super useful.
hamsterfart1973@reddit
I like it, I have been using it since 2018. Safe taxi and other features are really nice. Not sure if its with the plan I'm on, but if I keep zooming in on my sectional map after landing it'll automatically bring up the airport diagram showing where I am, orientation, and taxiways and everything is labeled.
I also use other Garmin products and have other subscriptions, which is part of why I chose Garmin Pilot initially over ForeFlight.
Fulcrum58@reddit
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure ForeFlight does the same thing
Bob_Ross3346@reddit
I think the new owners hobbled that program.
VileInventor@reddit
It does.
hamsterfart1973@reddit
Ah okay, didn't realize that
zeropapagolf@reddit (OP)
It does
FutureA350@reddit
Anybody know who fortinbrass1993 was he lowk just scammed me but don’t worry ever one spam his email perry999tw@yahoo.com.tw
marc_2@reddit
There's a free trial. Give it a shot.

It is worth noting that if you take on six students a year and they use your referral link ForeFlight has the same discount. Every student after six is more. I believe this is useful context despite the persistent hate boner this forum has for ForeFlight.
Nnumber@reddit
And it used to be that if you were a SAFE or NAFI member you got a discount without having to play a mid level marketing game to try to get referrals. That is cringe.
Muted-Rhubarb2143@reddit
Ok so I had to join and pay dues for a bullshit organization before? how is a referral system not an improvement over that?
pilotjlr@reddit
But this isn’t the whole story. From their website:
“Students must be invited through Instructor Tools in ForeFlight Logbook and must complete five signed logbook entries with you as their instructor. They must be new ForeFlight users who have not previously been on a paid subscription plan.”
So if you don’t invite them or they don’t use your invite link - doesn’t count.
If they don’t use foreflight logbook, or if you don’t sign their ForeFlight logbook 5 times - doesn’t count.
Or if they bought ForeFlight before they met you - doesn’t count.
Significant barriers to getting this done. You’re basically a ForeFlight sales person at this point.
zeropapagolf@reddit (OP)
My difficulty with that is the students you refer have to be first-time ForeFlight users. If they’ve ever had a paid subscription before it doesn’t count. Since I very rarely instruct a zero-time student, that doesn’t work for me.
GaryMooreAustin@reddit
this is genius. Foreflight's recent changes may end up moving Garmin into the lead slot
Atlanta_Mane@reddit
Great opportunity for garmin, considering foreflight got taken over by private equity and fired a ton of their staff.
xyberslut@reddit
Hopefully their international coverage gets better. Right now they can’t hold a candle to FF for international ops as far as I can tell. If that changes I would move to GP in a heartbeat.
FlyingShadow1@reddit
Well, guess I'm switching when my sub to foreflight is done. The fact I can also get Jepp plates plus this for the coat I pay just for foreflight cements Garmin pilot as the future for us.
Just pray they never sell to Private Equity.
org000h@reddit
It's a public company doing a couple of billion per quarter.
Mostly owned by private investors and retirement funds eg State Street, Vanguard and Blackrock.
Not many PE firms have the clout or $$$ to try and purchase it.
lil_layne@reddit
I mean Foreflight was owned by Boeing (a massive public company) before it was sold to PE.
org000h@reddit
Very different businesses and use cases.
Boeing had no business entering the GA EFB market, it was hoping to transition it to its operators instead of the custom hack jobs they currently run. FF is mostly part 91 and some 135. They wanted it in 121.
A mess of the 737, 777X etc left it needing some quick cash after a few shit quarters burning money on it, and to focus back on building planes. FF was back on the market.
Garmin Aviation on the other hand are mostly in 91/135, and the Pilot app is an extension of their avionics.
I doubt they'd ever let it go.
It's also excellent - I've been a paying customer for 5 or 6 years now. It made me buy all Garmin avionics for my Yak, and they integrate seamlessly.
alexthe5th@reddit
Buying Garmin would be up among the largest privaty equity deals of all time. That one's not happening.
The more likely way it could get in the hands of PE is if Garmin spun off the Garmin Pilot business, potentially along with other aviation or software assets, and sold that off. Considering that's a strategically important business for Garmin right now, I don't foresee that being a likely outcome either.
BrianBash@reddit
Shit, I might as well get both.
lil_layne@reddit
I was thinking about switching to Garmin Pilot when my Foreflight subscription expired but I wasn’t fully onboard with the idea just because I am so used to Foreflight’s software. This discount would 100% be enough to get me to switch and give a middle finger to the private equity firm that laid off the majority of Foreflight’s staff.
Mr-Plop@reddit
Hard to pass this up.
Torvaldicus_Unknown@reddit
Just gotta upload thousands of pages of books from my foreflight then I’ll be switching too
YourSpanishMomTaco@reddit
Garmin, at first you had my curiosity. Now you have my attention.
us1549@reddit
Hopefully this will pressure FF to lower their prices
TheSkyFlier@reddit
I started on Garmin Pilot, and it was okay a couple years ago. It’s gotten MUCH better over the years.
Golfer_Joe@reddit
Garmin pilot is actually pretty sweet. People who hate on it probably tried it years ago. It's much improved.
