I need to stay off Copart 😭

Ended up getting a 2012 EQQUS- not to sure about anything if this car. Just knew it had the updated 5.0 TAU engine, and wanted to see the rave lol!
Got the car for $425 before taxes
I see that the air suspension is sagging, engine looks like it’s in rough shape, needs an air intake filter, hood struts and probably more things I’m not seeing.
The car has 71k miles, and has a decent history check. And hasn’t been driven since 2017.
Thoughts opinions etc, I know the EQQUS is a pretty niche market so just wanna see what y’all think?
CrazyTechWizard96@reddit
Damn, You got the Hyundai Marc/Maybach for 1300? Damn!
Not My cup of Tea but cool!
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
I have a Ls 430, Audi S4 , Volvo s80 , Cadillac Deville and now this thing- exploring all luxury options 😂
CrazyTechWizard96@reddit
lol, get Yourself some BMW too, some E65 would fit right into it.
Woudl recommend if You'd go with that one for a pre '04 730i or 730d, with the M54b30 or M57d30, unless You desire the unrelaible hell, then go for the post facelift 760iL, haha.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
I’ve had a bmw or two , just not my style of German car
tubawhatever@reddit
Had any Mercedes? I think you'd need a sorted W140 or W221 or newer to compare.
Dank240SX@reddit
I’ve replaced the air suspension on these before. You can get remanufactured airbags front and rear for less than $1000 from rebuild master tech. The ones I’ve installed have over 30k miles and no issues. Only issue is in cold temperatures around 20F or below the seals can leak but will usually reseal and operate normally after ambient temp. normalizes.
medmond78@reddit
Dayum. That would render the car undriveable in my region for weeks at a time. Looks like a great deal tho
tubawhatever@reddit
Ehh. I would assume a cold leak is gonna be pretty small, I bet it's an annoyance over it rendering it inoperable.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Thank for the info! Very helpful
CaliforniaNavyDude@reddit
I mean, I'd buy it for that. Just don't swap the suspension for coilovers. It usually costs more than the needed repair. I once swapped all 4 struts on an Audi, cost me $1200 for rebuilds compared to the $3000 coilover kit. Easy job, struts had a 3 year warranty, and the ride was still exquisite.
Living-Albatross-120@reddit
That 425 winning bid to immediately owing 785 is why I will never bid on Copart.Screw them and their fees
EC_CO@reddit
Air suspension can be pretty expensive to fix. You might want to see if there is a swap to a regular shock/coilover setup.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
That is actually the plan, they’re still quite pricey around 1300-1600 for a full set but won’t mess up in the future
Budget_Vegetable2754@reddit
I used to work in the parts department at a Land Rover dealer. We'd offer Arnott replacement air strut assemblies, they would include the air spring and a new shock. Arnott offers a lifetime warranty, I sold a ton of them and never had a comeback.
OneExhaustedFather_@reddit
I’m going to remember this brand. Thank you.
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
Arnott just transfered a ton of skus to a cheaper facility in China. They also are relabelimg some skus from a 3rd party maker.
Budget_Vegetable2754@reddit
I've been out of the game for a few years so I don't have the most up to date info. Bummer!
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
Yeah, it only recently happened. Imo it's a fat mistake. One of our suppliers has discontinued them and decided to offer smaller brands from Europe.
HickBarrel@reddit
A lot of people complain about how rough it rides on coil springs. Luckily I haven't had to make the switch.
Squidking1000@reddit
So on Mercedes you can get the air bags for like $150 each (off Amazon, rockauto and such) and they are WAYYYYY easier to change then normal springs on struts, like comically easy. I’d do 10 Mercedes strut airbags to one steel strut spring for sure!
HickBarrel@reddit
As the owner of an equus, the facelift models are a bit nicer. But for the price, you can't complain one bit!
TunaOnWytNoCrust@reddit
I remember when these came out and thinking these are going to be really slick when they're used.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Haha, that would’ve been nice- got lucky to even find a pfl on here for this price with that may mileage
HickBarrel@reddit
Yeah, it's easily worth 20x what you paid. So I wouldn't have a single complaint.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
I mean depending on condition and if the engine runs- it’s still a salvage title so I wouldn’t be betting on to much money
bohica_cu@reddit
After seeing this, I’m going to hug my lesabre tighter.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Glad it’s you am not me lol
bohica_cu@reddit
No kidding. You spent $425. The one on left was $600.
h-thrust@reddit
Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Go for it.
Mammoth_Ad_7894@reddit
Are my eyes playing tricks or do these things have v8s in them?
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
The famous 5.0 TAU v8, yessir
Mammoth_Ad_7894@reddit
😦😦that's amazing....are they any good as far as reliability/building? I know nothing about Hyundai besides the fact that some of there cars look nice lmao....I've only had American cars so just not super knowledgeable about these
LilFunyunz@reddit
Allegedly, this specific engine isn't bad. But it is still Hyundai so expect to have to work on it. I guess they make pretty good numbers for what they are though.
Mammoth_Ad_7894@reddit
Sounds cool! Modern(ish) 4 door V8 that looks like your everyday normal traffic. I daily a 1995 Caprice so Im a fan of the 4 door v8s
LilFunyunz@reddit
Yeah it's a 5.0 that makes around 400 HP and isn't supposed to be too complex to work on (from a YouTube video that I watched just other day) and they are dirt cheap because of the brand reputation
brnjenkn@reddit
It's a Hyundai
JokerGenetics2121@reddit
Facts 🎯
Mammoth_Ad_7894@reddit
😂😂
nolanandrew555@reddit
I worked for Hyundai when this generation of Equus was launched. It was the first car I'd ever driven up to 150 mph in. If you drift them around corners (which they'll do rather easily), the seat belt tensioners kick in and pull you into the seat. The air suspension was comfier than the Genesis of that that generation and the interior was nicer. These are UNDERRATTED cars.
SuperReleasio64@reddit
So what I'm hearing is that they're badass drift machines?
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
How bad was the oil starvation in these? Lowkey kinda nervous the engine is locked up
balsaaaq@reddit
Was it advertised as starts / runs?
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
😬

“Donated vehicle”
Man, writing off a $60~$70,000 (in 2012 dollars!) vehicle with only 71k miles on it.
gw511@reddit
Looks nice
JDMAC608@reddit
Maybe it's different where I'm at, but the copart fees are absolutely outrageous. I bid $325 and won a 2015 fiesta I wanted as a beater. Total out the gate price was $840. That's well over 100% in fees/charges/bulkshit. No other auction I've ever seen has fees over 15%.
Confident-Spray-5945@reddit
Clean title?
ThanksALotBud@reddit
Friend of mine was driving in NYC and hit a nasty pothole (not enough to bend the wheel or puncture the tire) but hard enough to collapse the air suspension on the passenger side causing the car to drop that caused the oil pan to scrape on the road spilling oil all over the road.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Horrible story, thank you!
ThanksALotBud@reddit
So make sure you install a oil pan guard.
dingman58@reddit
It will look sick sitting in your driveway with all your other unfinished projects... Im not projecting you're projecting!
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Nice of you to assume I have a drive way.
I live in a box
Big-Energy-3363@reddit
Yup
Mr_Diesel13@reddit
I can honestly say I’ve never seen one of these, but for less than $500, why not.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
They were Hyundais way of trying to keep up with the Mercedes S class and Lexus LS
reallifedog@reddit
Everything about that car is massively expensive to maintain or fix. A lot of dealerships and shops won't work on them.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
I own a shop so I’m not worried about mechanics
reallifedog@reddit
You also own a money pit; have fun.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Never said I didn’t lol, I will have fun 😉
WalkinTarget@reddit
Such a rare ride !! I was well aware of them (due to owning a Kia at the time), and was myself after a very rare 2009 Kia Borrego V8 Special Edition using the earlier Tau 4.6. Never did find that Borrego, but I've always been enamored with the Equus and it's amazing amount of technology for such a dirt cheap price.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Let’s hope the engine isn’t locked up 🤞
WalkinTarget@reddit
Think positive, my dude. I hope it treats you as well as my Sorento did. Only reason I got rid of it was it sucked towing my 12' aluminum SxS trailer in the mountains of PA.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
You’re right!
Thank you, what vehicle did you end up getting to tow your trailer instead?
WalkinTarget@reddit
Hemi Durango. Typical Dodge quality - bought it for $24k in 2017 (added Maxcare to the purchase) and proceeded to dump 14K into it over the next 5 years, or rather Chrysler Corp did ! 😃
tehlurkingnoob@reddit
I will never trust a Hyundai personally but I have to say that one looks really nice. It was styled well I think.
For the price you paid, I think it’s alright.
ReallyGottaTakeAPiss@reddit
$425 leaves plenty of pennies for an LS swap ;)
VtheMan93@reddit
Ill gib you 1301$
riskit247@reddit
just change air suspension for normal metal suspension, cheap and no problems in future.
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Agreed
MeetPretty8630@reddit
Dont completely rule out fixing the air suspension though. Sometimes it's a very simple fix.
audiovox12@reddit
This is how I ended up with my WS6 project hemorrhaging my bank account
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
That’s probably what I’m facing
nedovolnoe_sopenie@reddit
a cheap v8 barge is a cheap v8 barge
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Could’ve gotten a rio for the same price
nedovolnoe_sopenie@reddit
why would you ever get a rio lmao
if you decide to get a korean car, might as well go whole hog
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Just the price fit context lol
nedovolnoe_sopenie@reddit
apparently i need to sleep
thx for being understanding
Bambooman584@reddit
Hell the air suspension could be alright, I know when mine sits for a hot minute without running the engine it'll droop pretty good.
Particular_Witness95@reddit
drift ready!!
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Probably not for this one
Particular_Witness95@reddit
turkishleatha@reddit
i have beef with the Lincoln CoPart
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Dont say that now💀 why? And should I be worried lol
RCMike_CHS@reddit
You should make out great in this deal!
NotYourNativeDaddy@reddit
Can’t beat the price. Now hit up the junk yards for parts.
Spotttty@reddit
So I’m kinda biased because I love air ride but mostly on trucks. If I got that smoking of a deal I would retro fit the suspension with an aftermarket control like Accuair, assuming the bags still all hold air. Then put some nice looking wheels on it and you have a killer looking daily driver.
Apparently they sold 426 of them in Canada so that explains why I don’t think I have ever seen one!
KiraTheWolfdog@reddit
Bro. There are good, dumb things to buy on copart. And you chose an equus 😅
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
That’s what it is
rqx82@reddit
It’s already pre-slammed for that JDM VIP look!
NoseResponsible3874@reddit
KDM VIP?
externalmusic4@reddit (OP)
Da Korean way
classless_classic@reddit
You did well.
killer_reindeer@reddit
If the air suspension is sagging, I recommend you do an LS swap. /s
