I mean its got to be better than what I'm dealing with in Australia. Want to go have a wank the websites ask for me to upload my ID, or access to a camera connected to the device I'm on. No fucking way am I giving them a picture of me getting ready to beat off.
There was talk of some kind of token based system but that hasn't eventuated.
Thankfully reddit can infer that I made my account at an age older than 3. If this account gets banned I'm out from this site too.
There are surely a lot of people out there who are going to get asked to age verify, say no thanks and then go to another site that isn't going to ask you that. Since any site trying to remain on the legal side will comply, all that's left are the less scrupulous websites. The under 18's are going to see some seriously objectionable shit from this I guarantee it.
RoyalWe666@reddit
I'll believe it's private and anonymous when the EFF or some meganerd with a long history of privacy advocacy opens it up and breaks down how it's not invasive.
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
If that is the case, how do they verify the information is accurate?
dnuohxof-2@reddit
How can something be anonymous if it’s supposed to verify legitimacy?
evilfungi@reddit
Your ISP or VPN is always able to track the sites that you visit, this additional layer doesn't track your website visits other than that you need to secure a +18 credential to access a website. of course to have such a proof of credentials, you will require a government issued id (with id numbers) or biometric recognition record.

All people want is to be left alone.
They should listen.
GopnikOIi@reddit
Cannot stand the death of the free internet. It's all about control really.
Zerodyne_Sin@reddit
Having been online in the early wild west days as a kid, I can't say that it doesn't need regulation ie: getting exposed to some illegal porn as a 12 year old can't be good for you. That said, there needs to be a middle ground between that era's "dark web everywhere" and this surveillance nightmare.
hera-fawcett@reddit
thats 100 on ur parents for not actively monitoring u.
parents need to realize that they gotta treat the internet the same way they treat toddlers w scissors.
Charming-Echo-4443@reddit
it should be on the parents, but since that isn’t working governments need to intervene
Open-Impact-1607@reddit
No, they don't
Charming-Echo-4443@reddit
what else do you suggest?
Open-Impact-1607@reddit
Well, not relying on the government to fix every problem. Don't want your kid looking at bad stuff online, don't let them. It is literally that easy
Charming-Echo-4443@reddit
i can’t control other parents
Open-Impact-1607@reddit
You don't need to
Charming-Echo-4443@reddit
but someone needs to, that’s why the government needs to do their job and govern
GopnikOIi@reddit
I don't think it's the role of the state to usurp the role of the paent here
Charming-Echo-4443@reddit
then we have different opinions on the role of the state 🤷♀️
Open-Impact-1607@reddit
Nah bro, they don't. That is the parents job. It is not the governments job to tell us what is OK to see and what isn't. That is up to us
hera-fawcett@reddit
it absolutely suuuuuucks.
we're so into our devices that we forget theyre basically drugs, w a bunch of wild weird varianced mini drugs. bc of that, we dont treat phones like we do cigarettes or alcohol, or even lesser things like scissors. we treat them as an extension of ourselves, another part of our body.
then, when kids are exposed-- bc theyre inevitably exposed-- we forget to monitor how they use it. we assume that we gave them safety scissors vs a cleaver.
but we cant even keep ourselves from random scrolling. we talk to strange ppl on the internet daily, sharing details about ourselves that are intimate and personal. when we lose our phones, we get harried--- bc its an expensive vital thing we need.
we cant properly parent kids on the internet bc we still arent able to control ourselves w it.
Zerodyne_Sin@reddit
Oh this was way before those child monitoring software was even around. Win 93 woo!
hera-fawcett@reddit
ukw, i gotta revise my statement bc early 90s parent deffo get a pass from me. that shit was a wild west that no one knew how to navigate.
TernarySquare0123@reddit
People doing illegal things are not usually big fans of following regulations.
Age verification laws etc. restrict access to legal content, not the hosting of illegal content.
TwinIronBlood@reddit
The excuse trotted out is child saftey but it's bull sh1t. This is clamping down on decent be the from the far left or right.
OrinThane@reddit
I first realized the internet was for surveillance when I took my first coding class. You quickly realize that all a program is is a set of instructions to collect inputs from users. Ideally these inputs would be used to do something for the user and then be erased but we all know that isn't what happens. What happens is that your inputs get collected and then collated into a profile of "you" that is then sold to people willing to buy it. Tech companies say this is anonymized but we know that, somewhere, it is not and that that information is available to any government.
TernarySquare0123@reddit
You get a massive wave of data center construction projects.
voiderest@reddit
The internet was built for communication. Problems with privacy or tracking are mostly due how the web developed for monetization. The foundation of doesn't really focus too much on privacy or bad actors. As the web grew ad based funding emerged and centralized platforms became more popular so that leads directly towards tracking.
There is more to tech than junk like ad networks and centralized platforms on the web.
JudgmentUnited5297@reddit
It wasn't a class for me, but modding a niche sub a decade ago. It was fascinating to see how much of Reddit was open on the backend back then. After learning about things like API and regex, I was like "wow, I bet Facebook has this on the inside as well... oh...."
No_Recover8842@reddit
Hey quick question, here’s a fun one for the kids: how can you verify someone’s age accurately without using records for reference? It’s almost like you’d need to have two forms of identification to verify. Like a multi factor authentication, including a biometric scan (facial recognition) and documented verification of a person’s DOB. Idk where you’d find that, maybe on a record somewhere? Like their passport, perhaps?
sailing_by_the_lee@reddit
Okay grandma, let's get you back to bed.
siecaptaindrake@reddit
Refuse to listen that thing speak… Can anyone summarize what it’s gonna be about ?
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
"Completely anonymous" and "Cannot be tracked" are kinda in direct opposition to what an app like that is supposed to do.
Existing-Antelope-20@reddit
This could potentially be untrue, but the caveat would be having actually secure ID technology (We implemented Real ID for a reason, when i was in high school kids were buying fake ids from China with bitcoin, they would arrive in lead lined boxes hidden beneath chopsticks or some such and actually pass id scans)

Boy are they in for some really interesting data.

I mean, since the government said so 🙄

Even worse, the EU is organisation not even a elected government.
Nemisis_the_2nd@reddit
Its really annoying when people parrot this line. It is elected, but a mix of direct and indirect democracy.
Groups like the parliament are directly elected, while others like the council are made up of leaders from the constituents nations, who themselves are directly or indirectly elected.
The commission has the least direct election route by being selected by council members.
Clarksonism@reddit
I’m guessing what you’re saying not many people know the ins and outs of the EU’s electoral system. But one may argue that having VDL as the president of the commission is quite controversial.
How she after many controversies both in her own county and outside still serves as president of the commission is beyond me.
People like her really affect the public opinion of the EU as an organization. Really wish for more transparency and more direct democracy when it comes to choosing the “face” of the commission.
GoriIIaGIue@reddit
What does CCC say about that?
bardwick@reddit
This statement has been a lie since the late 90's.
redcoatwright@reddit
MA house just passed a similar bill under the guise of "we must protect the children", hopefully it gets struck down in the senate.
All but 2 dems voted for it, too, proving that dem leadership is absolutely dogshit on tech anything.
Anxious_cactus@reddit
I'll never believe someone from the government pushing any tech or procedure and claiming it's safe and anonymous. Never. Double don't believe it when it's a quite old person that you know doesn't even understand the tech whatsoever.
beyond-loud@reddit
Start with some basic stuff like not leaking data, leaving sensitive information of the public at bus stops etc to build up trust, then we might believe it.
