This is terrifying for everyone especially those who have dealt with this parasite. We’re talking about a pest that literally eats living tissue, not just a nuisance fly.
The bottleneck here is the sterile fly production. Back in the 60s and 70s, we basically nuked the population out of North America using the Sterile Insect Technique, but that requires a massive constant supply of lab-raised sterile males to drown out the fertile ones. If the cases are already within 90 miles of the border, the USDA and COPEG need to be redlining those production facilities in Panama and Mexico immediately. If the fly factories can’t keep up with the northward spread, we’re looking at millions in livestock losses and a total nightmare for wildlife. It’s one of those rare problems where the solution is purely a numbers game. We just have to drop more sterile flies than the wild population can compete with.
Hopefully the funding is there to scale up production before they cross the Rio Grande because once they're established in the brush country, it’s ten times harder to root them out.
TraditionalLaw7763@reddit
Thank you for this well-explained reply. I have never heard of this bug and I appreciate learning about it. I’m Already squishing about 3 lantern flies a day so I’ll keep on the lookout going forward.
BowelMan@reddit (OP)
Collapse related, because as the world keeps warming, previously known diseases will start to appear in countries and areas not afflicted by them before. This is the first of the many more to come.
jxcel@reddit
This isn't really a climate change thing, it's a Republican governance thing. We had these things contained in Panama for decades thanks to a successful USDA program. But that was defunded by Trump and DOGE, and now they're heading back up to us. This will DEVASTATE the beef industry in Texas, but the beef farmers voted for this ...
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
I tried really hard to convince people to vote but something something Palestine and Kamala was a cop or something
ginger_and_egg@reddit
Ah of course, blame voters for not voting the way you want. Definitely don't hold public officials accountable or anything that would be ridiculous
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
The choice was between 2 people and the voters chose wrong lol
ginger_and_egg@reddit
How bad would the dem candidate have to be before you realize that lesser evilism is a terrible electoral strategy?
Like there's a reason Democrats keep running candidates that people wish they didn't have to vote for
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Right, the alternative is much better looking around America. lol, lmao even. So I guess we’ll just do fascism for the rest of the American experiment. Thanks I guess?
I’m leaving America next year anyway bc my lovely wife has a get out of America free card.
ginger_and_egg@reddit
I voted for Harris. But I don't blame people for being pissed the Democratic candidate was also going to rubber stamp the genocide of Palestinians?
I blame Harris and the DNC for failing to respond to the voters, and I blame Biden for running a second time when it was obvious to everyone that he wouldn't win, and preventing an actual primary from happening
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Yea but you still had the foresight to know that she was the better choice. If everyone had that same level of foresight we would be doing so terribly right now
Zuljo@reddit
What choice? The party that started a genocide over the party that continued it?
I'm not voting a fascist whether they are Democrat or Republic.
ginger_and_egg@reddit
Yeah we'd be fine but Palestine would still be obliterated.
Like this superiority complex is not going to be winning people to the Democrats' side, especially if they keep running center right candidates
Hello_Hangnail@reddit
Lucky
sloppymoves@reddit
Trump, Musk, and many more all but flat out admitted to voter fraud and manipulation. There were tons of news of mail-in ballots being hidden away, set on fire, etc. Georgia, I believe, is or was attempting to actively sue.
Yet here you are, still thinking our election system isn't completely compromised and still regurgitating clearly bad takes.
IcyBookkeeper5315@reddit
Whether the voter fraud from the Republican side happened or not (it definitely happened) that doesn’t negate that a lot of morons either voted for Trump or didn’t vote because of that reason.
musical_shares@reddit
It would have been a lot more work to cheat the election if it was a landslide, that’s the truth. A lot harder to invalidate millions of ballots than a few thousand here and there.
Oh well, shoulda coulda woulda but fuckin’ didn’t bother.
traye4@reddit
Let's put more of the blame on the 34% of the voting populace that actively voted for this, versus the <2% that sat out after the record-breaking turnout in 2020.
wamj@reddit
That <2% understood how terrible Trump would be.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
There will always be the 33% of absolute bottom of the barrel chucklefucks. We let them win again.
“But Hillary”
“But Kamala”
traye4@reddit
1/3 of the voting populace isn't "bottom of the barrel". That's "dang, there's still a decent amount of unspoiled food in this barrel" amounts.
Moreover, let's put some blame on the 34% that didn't vote in either election. You really want to blame this <2%.
Mission_Reply_2326@reddit
This. I am not gonna be more mad at people opposed to genocide than the people who voted for a child rapist.
aeschenkarnos@reddit
I'm not going to be more mad at non-voters, but I'm not going to not be mad at them.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
There have been studies. Around 30% will always support fascism in any given society
traye4@reddit
What studies are those? I'd be interested to read them.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
At work but I’ll try to remember later. I know Berkeley did one a while back. There have been a few. Most agree 18-40% but a lot narrow it down to about 30%
Dragoncat_3_4@reddit
I'm not from the US and I'm blaming both: one group is dumbass racist idiots, the others are traitor dumbass idiots. If even people in my shitass country knew that trump would be worse, the people in the US have no excuse for being this dumbass.
traye4@reddit
Yes, that's why I said more and didn't say all.
Yemnats@reddit
Imagine if she had supported Palestine like all of her internal data showed would cost her the election of she didn't.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Doesn’t change the fact that we had a choice of 2 individuals and one was clearly worse.
mdwatkins13@reddit
Both were clearly worse. Stop acting like Kamala would have done anything different. The United States has an electoral problem that at this point will only be solved with violence. The sooner you realize this the sooner we can move on with our lives, nothing is going to change until the rich hang. Because the rich are the ones pushing for all the policy changes and moving bills through Congress, how the fck you think the president is going to change that is beyond me. Start hanging leadership that drove the country into this position or stfu. Either way you'll do nothing but vote and bitch in 4 years about how nothing has changed isn't going to change the problem when anyone with a dollar bill can simply give campaign finance and pass bills through the legislature or have supreme Court justices push through to pass bad laws. Your entire focus on the executive branch completely ignores the other two-thirds of government when three out of three of government is funded by the rich who are pushing for these policies. Start attacking the rich by either prosecuting them for the crimes they've committed or hanging them in Mass. You don't get a republic by a plutocracy. Try to learn from Rome.
Bellegante@reddit
Are you stupid
TWILIGHTANTHROPOCENE@reddit
The structure is set, you’ll never change it with a ballot pull.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Paragraphs please wtf is this.
If you can’t tell the difference between center right and extreme fringe right, that’s a cognitive issue on your part
CaptainFartyAss@reddit
The other thing she knew not to do was to saber rattle over the Persian gulf, but she wouldn't shut up about it. Biden was pretty open about wanting this war, too. We'd be here either way, just with a different band banging on the war drum. Having shit for brains fucking it all up for everybody is about the only silver lining I'm seeing with any of this.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Are you honestly trying to imply that our situation would not be different if Kamala won instead of Trump?
That is absolutely hilarious, especially considering both Obama AND Biden denied Israel’s request to assist with Iran. Trump was the only one dumb enough.
lol c’mon. I didn’t feel great voting for her, would’ve obviously like to have had a primary. But implying things would be the same under Kamala is just…hilarious. I cannot even.
CaptainFartyAss@reddit
Pretty much every single person in this sub has been on the internet before and knows how to recognize the straw man tactic. We are all fully aware that political parties employ people who use it to put words in peoples mouths. People here know that the purpose of this tactic is to make it look someone look like they are supporting an unpopular position, rather than opposing one. It's not 2016 anymore. You need to up your stupid fucking game, shill.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
I’m a registered independent but a realist. It’s wild that you can’t see how our current situation is so far away from what it could have been if we just had a normal politician instead if this horror show.
I really can’t believe your stance is that a Kamala presidency would be as bad. Like Kamala would have sent ICE to murder citizens? Do u actually think that?
CaptainFartyAss@reddit
You're still doing it.
chefkoolaid@reddit
I felt great. She would have been fantastic
Undeity@reddit
It sucks, but I don't think she really had much choice. Perhaps she could have done something with more leeway and time, but the situation was far too delicate for her to publicly denounce the interests of a nominal ally.
If nothing else, it would have caused a massive international clusterfuck, and decimated our influence in the middle east. Which the Republicans would then have leveraged to get Trump elected anyways.
Perhaps she considers the risk would have been worth it in hindsight, though. An arguably far worse international clusterfuck happened anyways, after all.
p0rkch0ps@reddit
it’s her fault for running to the right on immigration and yes she supported israel no matter what.
she fucked up.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
We fucked up*
Our lives would be better right now if we chose the other person last November
p0rkch0ps@reddit
if you are a palestinian American voter in michigan are you voting to genocide your family in gaza because one of the candidates is the lesser evil?
maybe easy for you but not so for many. i don’t participate in these hostage situations that im forced in. no thanks. fuck anyone who says i need to pull that trigger.
this is on the candidate. it’s there responsibility to win over the voter. kamala didn’t do that. a mixture of arrogance and israel first politics. sucks you don’t expect more from our politicians
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
I’d do anything in my power to ensure the guy that was trying to turn the rubble into a real estate opportunity got nowhere near any decisions having to do with it.
p0rkch0ps@reddit
yea that didn’t work. if that was a good tactic then kamala would have won.
maybe dems will run on good policies instead of “im not trump”. but probably not. they never learn their lesson. their salaries depend on that.
PhoenixRisingdBanana@reddit
Huh?
Hello_Hangnail@reddit
They are not going to be happy campers when their livestock get infested so badly they die from it
ByTheHammerOfThor@reddit
Well beef is a huge green house gas contributor. Would it be the worst thing for the planet if cows went the way of the cavendish banana?
Key-Practice-8788@reddit
That's why we gave 24 Billion to the Argentinian beef industry.
raven00x@reddit
Not to the beef industry, to Trump jackets who were set to lose money on the Argentinian beef industry. Argentina was just a layover on the way to private equity pockets.
chefkoolaid@reddit
Oh snap. Yea that tracks
Vdasun-8412@reddit
Si..
Aqui las moscas estan aumentado
FlyingDiscsandJams@reddit
And USAID had a program to defend against this, which was canceled.
FuklzTheDrnkClwn@reddit
Yea but Kamala would have been bad for Palestine and would have started wars or whatever
JP32793@reddit
Run a real leftist and watch them win.
nate112332@reddit
I thought the rest of the countries affected were contributing the operation, even if the US withdraws
CaptainFartyAss@reddit
You are correct on both accounts and it's confusing. The USDA runs it, and USAID funded one of the monitoring programs. There is a problem with cattle smuggling and they're pretty sure that's how they jumped the wall. The Monitoring may have been a factor in that. That said, the program is still running. They just need to move it north and hope they can force them back down to panama where there is less land to cover.
High_Quality_Bean@reddit
Wait, cancelled?? Are you telling me that the great fly wall has been gone for MONTHS and I didn't realize???
We are so insanely cooked its not even funny
Kazaryn@reddit
Yep happened last year
Key-Practice-8788@reddit
Months? Try a full year now.
HardNut420@reddit
Most Americans supported this action btw
theCaitiff@reddit
I wouldnt say I'm "waiting" for malaria to arrive, that sounds too positive about it, but I am certainly watching for it. There's a number of tropical diseases and parasites that would be absolutely devastating if they got established in the gulf coastal states. My mother actually caught Dengue years back, and while its not endemic yet there's a few cases every year in Florida from people who don't travel.
dasunt@reddit
Malaria was in the US before.
It was eradicated through a variety of government programs targeting the disease.
AlwaysPissedOff59@reddit
You can add yellow fever to that list, too. It used to be seen as far north as Philadelphia. There's a vaccination available - at the moment - but with anti-vaxxers in charge of US Health there's no saying whether whether antivaxxers would actually use it.
The_De-Lesbianizer@reddit
We’ve had screwworm before. Not related to climate change

Don’t you mean Tylenol?
Hello_Hangnail@reddit
They're stingy with painkillers even if you're actively dying from cancer anymore
imalostkitty-ox0@reddit
Wait what? I knew this was a “tomorrow” problem as far back as 15 years ago, due to the limited agricultural output of poppy… but Jesus god almighty, the whole POINT of strongly restricting opiate pharmaceutical consumption was absolutely a supply-driven decision, and had almost nothing to do with actual human safety or addiction, the way the media made it seem. It was always about making sure the truly injured or sick (and ummm, the wealthy) would be guaranteed what they need.
Guess fentanyl and methadone are back on the menu then, huh?

I found what I believe was a botfly larvae in a mouse last year in Northern Ontario. Thought it was having trouble giving birth until the damn thing popped out of its side. Sent pictures etc to the relevant organizations to make them aware but haven't heard back.
OminousOminis@reddit
Squirrel and mouse botflies are native to Northern Ontario so what's the point of reporting them?
Parking_Chance_1905@reddit
Didn't know about those, and had never seen one in the last 30 years.
WarmScientist5297@reddit
Ministry of the environment actually spends 83% of their resources dealing with poorly run small town, garbage dumps. Conservation authority has problems with illegal hunting. I wonder who the right people are to call for this?
