Buying 7 year old ebike, bad idea?

I am interested in buying my first e-bike, i have found what looks to be a well maintained 7 year old ebike from a local brand. It's equipped with a Shimano steps E6000 motor and battery and has only done 70miles. Kept indoors.
Could it be an ok buy for $800? Or should I stay away from ebikes of that age?

It sounds like it should be fine, it's reputable motor and battery. I have a brose setup and it's six years old and done 2465 miles, I still get 90-95% of the original range . Hope this gives you some idea.

lol go for it

The batteries are not keen on being being stored for lengths of time unless they're around 40-60% charge. I might try using that fact to haggle them down and possibly source another battery later personally. This is coming from someone that likes to tinker and already has a decent bike mind you.

No, terrible idea. The battery is almost certainly shot, The tech in the space evolves very rapidly so 7 years is donkeys ages.

It would mainly be used to and from work, about 15 miles each way. In what way has the tech evolved? Im fine with some battery degradation
beagles4ever@reddit
"some" is doing a lot of work here.
The odds that a bike battery that only has 70 miles on it after 7 years has been properly cared for and kept in optimal condition are between slim and none and slim just left town. That battery is almost certainly not worth anything.

Are you able to purchase a new battery if needed?
Minimum_Tough_5389@reddit (OP)
Sure but its around $500
Schemeckles@reddit
Then add that to the purchase price...
Or try to leverage it into the deal and cut down his price.
$800 for a 7 year old bike is high.
You've been very vague with the post regarding brand/model. But since it's a new/evolving industry, the standards are different.
A bike that could've costed $3k seven years ago, with (insert random features here), might only cost $1200 today for a similar bike with the same features.
And the battery is either shot, or on its last legs.
Lordly_Lobster@reddit
IF you can take the bike out for a test drive under full power to make sure the battery holds a full charge, is responsive, and doesn't sag under high load
A battery could last that long if it was kept in an intermediate state of charge. But that's a big if. Take a look at upway.co They have low mileage ebikes that are newer and come with a one year warranty. You'll pay a little more but have some peace of mind.

Take the cost of a new battery into account, but for 800, it can’t be that bad. I guess it depends on how much an equivalent bike would cost you new.
Bucksin06@reddit
I bought my 1-year-old Aventon on Upway with only 128 mi for only $900 for comparison
Neat_Clothes_248@reddit
You worded the title so poorly lol
Minimum_Tough_5389@reddit (OP)
How so?
atlasraven@reddit
Go down to $500 and only if you are desperate to commute. You may be better off with a new bike in the $800-1000 range (or higher if budget allows).
godver3@reddit
It’s essentially brand new if it’s only done 70 miles - I think it’s probably fine but that seems very unusual. Owner just left it sitting?
Minimum_Tough_5389@reddit (OP)
I meant 800 miles, only used during the summer. Kept indoors.
godver3@reddit
Ah - I think in that case you could spend similar and get a much newer bike (or new).
Hopeful-Driver-3945@reddit
Except for the battery that has been degrading for 7 years.
godver3@reddit
Yeah - would definitely want to test that. The other issue is motors have improved in the past 7 years quite a lot.
trevor_plantaginous@reddit
I thought you were buying a 7 yr old an ebike. No to both questions.
m2keo@reddit
I'd just get a brand new bike, made in 2026, for $800. Don't fall for the name brand, motor type stigma, bro.
These are ebikes, not cars. lol. And we all know cars depreciate pretty bad in itself as it is already.
Minimum_Tough_5389@reddit (OP)
There are no CE certified e-bikes in that price range
unseenmover@reddit
E6000 like the E8000 motor series and there 1st gen charging systems technology is no longer supported by shimano
Hopeful-Driver-3945@reddit
Bike will be fine. Battery might need a revision. Look up those prices if you're okay with that risk.
BassesNBikes@reddit
It depends. Batteries do degrade over time even when not in use, and how the battery was stored matters. If it was kept around 40% charge it could be ok, but it would be a good idea to check the Shimano Steps app battery health report.
Weird-University1361@reddit
Depends if original price was 5x of that. 7-year-old battery is not great and replacement could cost a fortune if you can even find it.
