Eliminate the nickel, the dime AND the quarter

Like what costs less than a dollar? A banana? Just buy like 2 or something
DianeDesRivieres@reddit
Then what will we give the beggars?
OkRickySpinach@reddit (OP)
They can't ask for spare change if it doesn't exist
Octoclops8@reddit
What will Obama do?
DianeDesRivieres@reddit
U mean :(
Nate_Christ@reddit
5s. I always gave 5s back when I could afford it
DianeDesRivieres@reddit
I give what I can, mostly loonies and sometimes twonies.
But we are not ready for getting rid of all change.
reddit_pug@reddit
Keep the dime, drop a digit from currency except some digital transactions (like already happens with gasoline). So for coins you just have the dime, half dollar, and dollar.
Mr_Saturn1@reddit
50 cent piece is the lowest denomination, turn 1s and 5s into coins. Paper start at 10.
FernShades@reddit
Finally, a world where I don't feel like a human maraca every time I walk down the street
Sorry-Climate-7982@reddit
You think modern coins are bad. Out west, rarely ever had a paper dollar bill. A mere 10 dollars or so of the old cartwheels could really weigh a young kid down.

Counterpoint: $5, $10, and $20 coins. They don't need to be large (this all made up anyways). Being able to carry a decent amount of money in a small package is slick. You might counter with "a couple hundreds are already pretty tiny" to which I would say "shut up".

The problem is when your pocket vomits up all of your coins in a movie theater.
invol713@reddit
Modern-day vomitorium.
ghoti00@reddit
We should also eliminate the dollar, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills.
Keep the $2 bills. They are cool.

But then we'd need more dollar coins--for flipping.
Possible_Farm4535@reddit
Just abolish money
ThirdSunRising@reddit
Nickel and dime, absolutely.
But not the quarter. I still have good memories involving quarters. Not ready to let that go yet.
fosterdad2017@reddit
Devalue 100:1
A $3 black coffee, three pennies. A $55 dinner? Two quarters and a nickel. A $12,000 used car? Two bills, $100+20.
Make cash life great again.
OkDrag3967@reddit
Or we could just print bigger bills like most countries with runaway inflation
Primary_Crab687@reddit
The halfpenny was phased out decades ago for being so worthless that it had no practical use, and at the time, it was worth more than the dime is currently worth. I think we can keep the quarter but anything lower is pointless
Wodentinot@reddit
The half cent was first minted in 1793 and last minted in 1857.
Megalocerus@reddit
You need a quarter for getting a cart at Aldi. But you get the quarter back, so you only need the one.
xrelaht@reddit
Aldi can switch to dollar coins. Then maybe they’ll actually stay in circulation!
ParrishDanforth@reddit
I would prefer to eliminate the nickle and quarter, but keep the dime.
It's so small, it's perfect to be the smallest coin. We should add a 50 cent piece, a $1 and a $5 coin.
I know Americans hate coins, but it's because they don't buy anything because they're too small.
sonicjesus@reddit
I always like the idea of a single 1/3 dollar coin. You'd never have more than two.
Frederf220@reddit
That's not crazy enough. In 1857 the half-penny was discontinued. A half penny in 1857 is worth about 17.5 cents today which is pretty close to 25 cents.
In 1858 people were walking around with 34 cent coins in their pocket as the dead minimum denomination possible.
brak-0666@reddit
Parking meters in my area a quarter an hour. Fuck off.
JonJackjon@reddit
Do you realize the numeric penny is still around, the physical penny has been retired. The monetary value of a penny is still available for CC purchases.
cuentalternativa@reddit
Let’s just go back to clams
OkKnee7580@reddit
Don’t worry inflation will take care of them in due time
Sweet_Speech_9054@reddit
“How much is a banana Michael? Ten dollars?”
A quote that is getting less funny at an alarming rate.
Megalocerus@reddit
My grocery has charged $.49 a pound for bananas for the last 20 years at least. I'm sure they lose money on them, but the price hasn't inflated.
taint_stain@reddit
Maybe they changed how much a pound weighs.
xrelaht@reddit
Banana production is massively subsidized, and has been for over a century.
Nate_Christ@reddit
Agreed, except maybe the quarter. Change $1 $5 and $10 to coins. Add a $200, $500, and $1000 bill to keep up with inflation. I bought a car with cash once. It took like 30 bills, insane
xrelaht@reddit
I bought a truck with 90x$100. Beat when I sold an old Boxster for the most valuable stack of cash I’ve ever held.
It’d have been nice to be just 9 bills, but how often does this come up?
Nate_Christ@reddit
Paying rent, or employees. Good luck breaking $500 or $1000 at the gas station though
xrelaht@reddit
Maybe just the places I was living, but the last few places I rented before buying wouldn’t take cash.
The main (legal) employees who get paid in cash are wait staff. They typically get paid out of the cash taken in, which is unlikely to have many $500s in it: any place which regularly has bills high enough someone might want to pay that way is also likely to have most patrons pay with a card.
Blueopus2@reddit
> Add a $200, $500, and $1000 bill
Not that I disagree but drug lords would love this, it’s why there’s more $100 bills out there than $1 bills and why they got rid of the 500 euro bill
GSilky@reddit
I like quarters.
EnvironmentEntire201@reddit
A fellow 50c piece enjoyer I see
xrelaht@reddit
Keep the 50¢ piece?

I like using coins personally, I wish dollar coins and 50 cent pieces were more common
Fragraham@reddit
Revalue the cent to a dollar. Now we have a ready supply of durable dollar coins, and less need to keep printing paper currency. There's the little issue of inflation, but this isn't r/saneideas.
quackl11@reddit
What about loonies and toonies for the canadians
somecow@reddit
They should start giving people little pieces of plastic that are linked to their bank account (that automatically has money put in), that way there’s no need to fumble with cash. Maybe even have machines that accept that plastic. Oh wait.
CarlJustCarl@reddit
What about nickel and dime guys like me?
Sad_Restaurant_5276@reddit
You can't eliminate something you don't have. Are these foreign vegetables or something. Nickel is a metal, dime a chocolate bar and quarter 25% so what the hell are you talking about. You Klingons are all alike.
Just_blorpo@reddit
Honestly, I have not fished a coin out of my pocket to actually pay for something in a long time. When I don’t use a card to pay for a purchase I always pay with paper bills. Any coins that I get back from purchases go into my pocket and into a coin jar back home at my earliest convenience.
shaggs31@reddit
I think quarters still make some sense. But ya nickels and dimes are worth less today then the half-cent did when they stopped making it.
wizzard419@reddit
But what about sales tax? Since it can vary by city (bond measures and such), you're never going to get round prices unless everyone ends up paying an extra dollar.
iowaman79@reddit
OK so what if something cost 5.45?
ErikLeppen@reddit
Yes please.
Also, have a law that all prices of items in shops must be rounded to two significant figures, and if not, the buyer can round them down (so €849.99 becomes €840). All those numbers with nines are dumb and deliberately misleading.

Keep the quarter, eliminate the dollar bill, and put more half dollars, dollar coins and $2 bills into circulation.
kilobitch@reddit
A banana costs $10. Everyone knows this.
Ixshanade@reddit
Quarters are needed for gumballs so yeah... .05 and .10 bye bye
HouseHippoBeliever@reddit
do this but keep the penny
MZago1@reddit
Now that's change you can believe in!
cherry_monkey@reddit
I would argue that's no change at all
Jman15x@reddit
.05 and .10 yes for sure.
