Trump's War on Whales

CanaryMedia: “Trump’s offshore wind opposition was never really about the whales.” In recent years, “the well-being of whales has become a potent political weapon for President Donald Trump, Republican politicians, and right-wing groups to wield against America’s fledgling offshore wind industry.” They are not put off by the total lack of evidence. “The real leading threats are marine-gear entanglements, boat collisions, and the effects of climate change.” Michael Jasny, director of marine mammals for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said, “I think it’s pretty clear they don’t care about marine species.”
Several wks ago, “a committee of Trump-appointed officials voted to exempt oil and gas drilling in the Gulf from protections under the Endangered Species Act.” The God Squad, so named because of its power to decide whether a species lives or dies, “has convened only three other times since the landmark law was enacted over 50 years ago to prevent plant and animal extinctions.” As horrendous as this sounds, this decision may not change much on the water, as operators are still expected to comply with existing measures to avoid and minimize environmental risks. “These measures were set by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which is in charge of planning offshore drilling operations, and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which provides regulatory oversight.”
In an exemplary illustration of regulatory capture, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum put on yet another hat, + “chaired the 7-member committee, which also included the Secretaries of Defense, Agriculture, and the Army, as well as the heads of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], and the Council of Economic Advisors.” Even Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth weighed in, stating,, ‘Oil production in the Gulf’ provides a vital buffer, insulating our economy and military from foreign instability and reducing the strategic leverage of our adversaries.”
“Just a day after the meeting, Burgum announced that the U.S. produced over 714 million barrels in 2025—the highest annual output on record.” What can I say? Have they neither decency nor any sense of irony?

Has anyone ever considered filing a legal challenge because as far as I’m aware of the president doesn’t have the power to exempt people from following the endangered species act

Can we keep this shit off of here, please? There is ANOTHER dead gray whale on the beach by our house, this is fucking disturbing and Im tired of this fucking prick and his disgusting decisions invading every single ounce of our lives.

Do you think that whale was killed by a ship that Trump and his men allowed through?

Sorry to hear of this dilemma. Here is the Pacific Northwest dead whales washing up are a problem as well. And I share your distaste for the government disorders that we are resisting + hope to make right over the next 3 yrs, particularly this November.

Politics - politics everywhere. Do you think /r/atheism would’ve been as adamantly opposed to traditional religion if they would have known that a bunch of squishy 105s would just replace their childhood religion with banal political worship?
Internal_Praline_658@reddit
Typical conservative word salad from somebody with a hidden comment history, how predictable. And of course protecting endangered species is political.
mikehansen83@reddit
No it’s not imo but, although you’re totally wrong about my politics (old-school libs were privacy-focused; good to see the youth online), I appreciate the call out.
I will block the super-political folks & not expect others to change their preferences to mine. All the best, Mister Praline!

Not sure where atheism comes into this, even as an analogy. Would you debate the points about the lack of whale deaths from turbines, the issue of regulatory capture, the misuse of the 'god squad' or any other substantive point, Mike?
mikehansen83@reddit
Reddit treats politics as religion and some of us who left our religion don’t want to see others’ testimonies & protestations in random subreddits
TesseractToo@reddit
This i a political issue, preventing whale extinction has always been downtown political.
What is a 105?

We need to save the planet. I think it's time the pacifist environmentalists take up arms. Tired of people ruining the planet for profit

He and his butt kickers are greedy and evil. They have no empathy for anyone. Especially wildlife.

While I am a little more restrained, I cannot debate any of your points.
