Those numbers seem extremely optimistic for 100 produced. It’s not bespoke if they make 100. Significantly lower volume Bugattis and other hypercars, that will hold their value much better, are cheaper, and probably more desirable.
I can sorta understand them charging like 3 guys $28 million for a 1/3 boattail. I don’t see how they can convince those people to spend 1/3rd of that on a car they’re gonna make 33x more of.
Mrr_Bond@reddit
Yeah in the ultra exclusive, multi million dollar car world, 100 units may as well be a regular production car. Like you said, if Bugatti can't even as that much for something they'll make 20 of, Rolls Royce is smoking something strong if they think thy can move 100 at that price.
AmericanExcellence@reddit
i get flexing, but simply handing a company millions of excess dollars for no returned value is just dumb.
PM_ME_YO_TREE_FIDDY@reddit
Rich people aren’t immune to being dumb. They’re mostly immune to the consequences of it.
Due-Boot1904@reddit
Exactly. This is 'back of the couch' money to the people this car is aimed at. A few money moves and this will paid off at the push of a keyboard button.
PM_ME_YO_TREE_FIDDY@reddit
Exactly. It doesn’t even matter to them, it’s just their monthly dopamine hit the same way I spend 50 bucks on MTX in path of exile.
maveric101@reddit
I spend "too much" money on outdoor gear I don't actually need. Billionaires spend "too much" on pointless cars. Same same.
Whether the billionaires have too much money is a separate topic.
costafilh0@reddit
Better a stupid collectible than cash in the bank.
Only poor stupid people keep cash in the bank.
m0viestar@reddit
There is almost an immediate return on the value because it's so limited. It will sell for 2x that in a few years when the first right of refusal expires. That's how all high end exclusive exotics work.
strongmanass@reddit
Is it fundamentally different from the Tourbillon or Utopia that are universally praised? In all cases it's an obscene amount of money for a car that's primarily a signal of wealth and exclusivity rather than a vehicle for transportation. But just as the Tourbillon and Utopia can be enjoyed (mainly on a closed course) the Nightingale can also be enjoyed.
The Bugatti and Pagani just happen to be in segments that enthusiasts like.
Major-Ant4600@reddit
Is that really any different than any other commissioned luxury product?
Having an exclusive on off is the flex.
It's like the Real Housewife Jennifer Tilly wearing a special commissioned dress with her face on it. The dress was ugly but that's not the point. The point is the flex of showing she has the money and influence to have the designer craft her a custom dress.
XMAN2YMAN@reddit
This has been going on for centuries. Look at the city of San Gimignano in Italy. It’s filled with tall towers and the tallest belong to the richest.
TrueSwagformyBois@reddit
It’s how you prove you’re in the club and better than the people who hesitate over $10m purchases. Because the only thing in life that matters is proving that you’re better than everyone else

Separating stipud rich people us Rolls-Royce's entire business model.
maveric101@reddit
I mean, when you're worth over a billion dollars, it's not a big deal.
costafilh0@reddit
Stupid would be keeping 10 million in cash in the bank.
You know who keeps money in the bank?
Stupid poor people.
OttoVonCranky@reddit
So, you have cash in the bank?
Suck_dick_for_karma@reddit
No, I just have strong opinions
OttoVonCranky@reddit
That may just be stupid. Got it.

Do people say the same thing when a billionaire buys a mansion too?

Runs off the tears and blood of poor people.
costafilh0@reddit
Are you talking about the car or the global economy of which you are a part? Which both runs off the tears and blood of poor people.
You know you are part of the problem. Right? We all are.
So, unless you live in the woods and grow your own food, you are nothing but a cynical hypocrite.
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
I've always wondered whether these type of bespoke cars ever hold their value. I'd understand if they were technically impressive (like a Bugatti) or necessary to own in order to prove brand loyalty (like a Ferrari hypercar), but these things are just reskinned versions of existing Rolls Royces.
costafilh0@reddit
They are money parks, not your typical buy and flip it in two years like we see with higher volume models.
You can buy this and park it forevert, or you can see your money vanish in the bank, for inflation or because the bank went bankrupt. What do you prefer?
These people are extremely wealthy. This is just a small portion of about 5-20% of their diversification in art and collectibles.
strongmanass@reddit
The drivetrain is likely the Spectre's, but the body is custom. Performance/technical engineering isn't the only reason to pay a lot for a limited run car.
The low production number already means the price will be high. Since cost constraints are lower, designers usually take the opportunity to exercise more creative freedom which often leads to more difficult manufacturing or special parts. That adds more to the price.
Then a lot of what that kind of client wants is handwork, which takes a very long time. The only people allowed to do it are very skilled and command a high hourly rate, which again increases the price.
On top of that the buyers want special and unique materials. Sourcing them and testing them for automotive suitability is expensive. RR will have bought and thrown away a lot of very expensive cashmere for the convertible top. Add more to the price.
By the time you do all that, a 7 figure price isn't unreasonable. Whether it's unreasonable to make a car that way in the first place is a different question. But if you take that as the starting point, the sum of all those expenses is higher than you might think. Of course there's much, much higher margin for these cars than anything else. But it's not like this car costs RR the same as a Spectre and everything else is markup.
g0atm3a1@reddit
If this isn’t a sign of rich folks propping up the current world economy, I don’t know what is.
costafilh0@reddit
This is a sign of the dollar losing value.
That is why collectibles are so trendy.

They don't care either. You are not the target customer, otherwise you would get the call.
Cranjesmcbasketball1@reddit
Can we agree that we all need to stop using the word "bespoke"?
costafilh0@reddit
It is bespoke. They make a model then clients can customize it further with thousands of options.
strongmanass@reddit
This is an appropriate use of "bespoke" in an automotive context. It's a special body for a 100 unit run.
Jah348@reddit
"bespoke" and "100 units" are mutually exclusive.
strongmanass@reddit
Right, that's Road and Track's term. RR refer to this as "Coachbuild Collection," which is an appropriate term here. "Bespoke" in RR speak refers to individual customization for standard models. The details in that case are indeed bespoke - e.g. the Phantom buyer who commissioned Iris van Herpen to design the interior or the Ghost buyer who asked them to crush a bag of diamonds in the paint.
gimpwiz@reddit
Imagine working the paint booth for that request.
strongmanass@reddit
"Bob, crush these diamonds into the paint."
"...that's stupid. Do you know how much more work that will be?"
"Take whatever time you need. Just make sure you document it."
"Fine...silly rich twat. I'm going for a pint to calm down. Since this is because of him, I'm logging this time."
RR press release: "Our paint specialist spent 400 hours meticulously testing the best particle size to achieve the maximum lustre for this bespoke paint request."
gimpwiz@reddit
"Our paint specialist killed not one but three good quality sprayers because of the size and abrasiveness of these particle sizes, and you best believe we charged the customer for that too." ;)
strongmanass@reddit
Charge for each sprayer, downtime to change them out, opportunity cost for taking up time for other cars, extra health and safety for paint specialist, consultation with diamond specialist, legal fee to draft NDA with diamond specialist, new pens for NDA (Cartier for some reason), new paintbrushes for Coachline painter, donation in client's name to squirrel rescue foundation for ethical sourcing of paintbrush hair.

100?
10 million?
That's crazy.
They just made a 1 of 1 about 3 years ago for 30 million.
But I guess when you don't have anywhere else to park your money, you need to be creative, and in the end it doesn't really matter, most units won't be sold at all, just kept as art and collectibles of the family property.
