I absolutely believe the only thing stopping everyone from going monstrous is the threat of punishment and consequences built into every facet of society, all the way down to just "Someone bigger and stronger might break your face if they don't like what you do/did and know about it."

We see what keeps happening every time someone has enough power, fame, success, popularity, or wealth to effectively brush off consequences. It's easy to become cynical.

yepppp. I got myself in trouble long ago with a very atrractive boss in her fifties that got divorced after her kids grew up and moved out. I was early 20's at the time and holy shit she enjoyed giggling at my dumb 20 something mistakes. Took about 3 months before I was ass naked in her hot tub half wasted.
