How can I find an old-school toothpaste that is actually paste and not gel?
Posted by Dwincroft@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 57 comments
Please help! All the toothpaste brands I know are changing their formulas left right and centre. Former safe choice, sensodyne sensitivity and gum is now blue gel shite and my AuDHD brain is not coping.
I spend literal MINUTES scanning packaging in the toothpaste aisle and checking the manufacturers' websites for clues as to what is actually in the tube. But even ignoring those which actually own up to being gel doesn't prevent the disappointment of wasting money on something that makes my skin crawl.

You can make your own old-school toothpaste by grinding mouse skulls and mixing to a paste with water. Optionally flavour with a little peppermint oil.
Fickle_Fox_4433@reddit
I recommend trying Euthymol. I love the stuff
trouser_mouse@reddit
My gran used to use Euthymol tooth powder!
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
swells my gums up horrifically
Krags@reddit
Just make sure it has flouride
Tight-Principle-743@reddit
It’s good but don’t let the pink fool you - it’s so very strong
Curious_Sandwich3606@reddit
Keeps my breath fresh ages, but the original has no fluoride in it so maybe get the pink
GarageFrankenstein@reddit
It's worth a try at least once. The strength of flavour makes my eyes water it's insane! 😄
CriticalMine7886@reddit
I use Arm & Hammer because I prefer the BiCarb taste. I think all their variants are traditional paste
Old_Taro_7636@reddit
Euthymol is class, not as strong as it used to be but still burns in the best way
SwingyWingyShoes@reddit
Love the feeling of it but no fluoride sadly.
b0ngerz@reddit
fluoride is one of the most toxic chemicals on the planet.
HydrostaticToad@reddit
Nope. Even when cases of fluoride poisoning occur, it's not from toothpaste or treated water with added fluoride. The levels of fluoride you would ingest from those sources are nowhere near high enough to cause any problems.
Fluoride poisoning occurs in areas where 2 things are true:
If your drinking water doesn't come from groundwater, you're all good. If your drinking water does come from groundwater but the fluoride levels are low, also fine.
If you chow down on whole tubes of fluoridated toothpaste instead of just put it on your teeth for a minute and spit it out, you have bigger problems than fluoride poisoning (...or it's too late to worry about it)
Defiant_Put_7542@reddit
No, it isn't.

b0ngerz@reddit
and free of flouride 😃😁
alrightla@reddit
What’s wrong with fluoride? I thought it was good for teeth.
beernon@reddit
Alt right conspiracy nonsense. They also believe smart meters cause cancer and 5G towers cause COVID.
HydrostaticToad@reddit
It is, there's nothing wrong with fluoridated toothpaste. If you live in an area with fluoridated water you're probably fine no matter what type of toothpaste you use. It most likely doesn't matter whatsoever.
squeakypeaks@reddit
Lidl toothpaste is not too bad and not too minty for ASD mouth.
tt-23@reddit
Arm & Hammer is usually a weird gritty savoury paste
Dwincroft@reddit (OP)
Weirdly gritty and savoury doesn't sound very appetising on the surface, but that's exactly the texture I'm looking for. Thanks.
Bifanarama@reddit
For weird/gritty/savoury, you need Corsodyl. There's nothing weirder or grittier or savourier.
tt-23@reddit
It’s really pleasant once you get used to it.
HauntingCicada2630@reddit
It's just bicarb
Sea-Situation7495@reddit
It's also slightly salty, which can strike as weird at first - but tastes much less chemically than other tooth pastes, and leaves the mouth fresher than most.
A&H all the way for me.
feesh_face@reddit
A version of Corsodyl has bicarb in it which causes the flavour and texture.
Sweaty_Ear_9247@reddit
Tbh the supermarkets own cheap brand tends to be the old school type. Plus if it is, then it's a cheap new favourite and if not, you haven't spent a fortune.
swapacoinforafish@reddit
Marvis is pretty pastey
TimeTimeClock@reddit
As far as I know the Boots standard and Boots sensitive are white paste. But i last bought them a few months ago.
oblongunreal@reddit
Euthymol in the morning, Sarakan in the evening.
Gulbasaur@reddit
Have a look at Kingfisher toothpaste. Old skool cool.
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
yes! this is my paste now, fluoride free fennel
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
OP, sounds like you're like me with toothpaste, my world starts to fall apart if I have the wrong one. I seem to have an incredibly sensitive system for chemicals and nasties and with toothpaste, it's a direct line to your bloodstream through your gums
Dwincroft@reddit (OP)
I definitely should pay more attention to what's actually in the toothpaste like you, but it's all about the texture for me.
Etheria_system@reddit
Make sure you use a toothpaste with fluoride. It’s really important for overall tooth health and the only people who say it’s bad are anti science cranks.
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
or people that it makes ill
Wonderful-Bonus5439@reddit
Love kingfisher!
Dwincroft@reddit (OP)
Ooh thank you, might have to give this a go.
Exact-Reference3966@reddit
Tesco own brand cheap toothpaste is plain white old school chalky paste.
intotheneonlights@reddit
Try MARVIS classic strong mint - though you might have to get it online
caprimum@reddit
Superdrug stock it now! Picked some up yesterday and it was on offer.
intotheneonlights@reddit
Aha, I have a travel one but could not for the life of me remember where from!
thatguysaidearlier@reddit
Aquafresh. UK owned. Some gel in the colour but still predominantly classical white paste.
ellatheprincessbrat@reddit
Corsodyl gum repair toothpaste is a paste, but it’s pretty gritty so might not be your thing
Efficient_Apricot855@reddit
Morrisons own brand - cheap but absolutely fine and not too minty!
maceion@reddit
Note: Toothpaste is an odd substance as it is made as a liquid capable of being a gel to work with toothpaste dispenser tube and to change into a liquid in mouth to enable it to flow correctly between teeth. The 'hydraulics' of toothpaste is an engineering marvel. Search for toothpaste hydraulics.
DameKumquat@reddit
Try the cheapest ones by each brand - least likely to be new and exciting. Though the basics Sensodyne is now a blue gel. Tastes better, though.
No_Preference9093@reddit
The Colgate ones that are paste not gel say they are paste with a little symbol with paste written in it on the back of the tube.
Prestigious_Elk353@reddit
Kids toothpastes have the same amount of fluoride as most adult ones and are not usually gel.
My nine year old likes the Boots under 6 one because it’s milder mint. But exactly the same ingredients as the older one….
Rabid_Tanuki@reddit
If you're willing to spend for a treat, look up "Marvis" toothpaste. It's Italian and it's about as old fashioned paste as you can get, with some fun flavours.
Watchkeys@reddit
I use Weleda salt toothpaste. It's a paste. But it's brown, so might upset your applecart in a different way, or... might be ok.
I like the way you're phrasing it as them 'owning up'. Toothcare products definitely need to be authentic about their qualities, because there's no window on the tube. You can easily tell that a shower gel isn't a bar of soap, but is actually a squirty bottle of un-rinse-able hell slime. But you're right: toothpaste needs to tell us outright.
Lonely-Job484@reddit
Colgate
L-0-T-H-0-S@reddit
Colgate still make standard paste toothpaste.
Dwincroft@reddit (OP)
That's what I thought, but the tube of colgate at my sink is white gel.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
I would look at the really cheap ones that supermarkets do.
Acrobatic_Method613@reddit
Try Arm and Hammer sensitive. Proper white toothpaste, not too minty.
