I wish they extended the courage they show by designing the retro gauge cluster to the exterior. The exterior is still a blob, with some artificial edges. It’s a bland cross between a Renault and an Opel.

Bigger boot but not as spacious for passengers, not even close. The ID.3 has a 17 cm longer wheelbase, you can definitely feel that, especially on the rear seats.
As for range, the ID.3 Neo starts at 30k Euros with 417 km of range and the ID Polo at 25k Euros with 300 km.
I feel like there is enough difference. One might argue that the ICE Polo and ICE Golf are closer to each other, given that range isn't an issue with ICE cars. And they never had a problem selling both of them.
That'll be WLTP, which is all but meaningless. I hate that we've reached this point, but the only way to really know EV range is to wait for the real world tests.
There's practically no way in hell it's getting 10.6kWh/100km though.
WLTP is pretty reliable as a top end of range. That’s what you get below 50mph at mild temperatures, then down to about 60% of that depending on how cold it is or how fast you drive.
Well that’s the problem right, it’s the range under what are essentially the best possible conditions. That happens with ICE too, but EVs are more sensitive to conditions and will vary a lot more based on the temperature, speed etc.
They publish WLTP and people assume they can even get close to it, which is almost never the case.
The interior display is basically a phone screen and the buttons on the steering wheel are a mess...
The ID range is what an established manufacturer has their hand forced to make EVs and they all kinda suck. The Hyundai Ioniq/Kia EV range feel like they wanted to create an EV from the ground up.
Im hella excited about the new interior where VW introduced normal buttons again instead of those awful touch buttons and the new APP350 motor. Should be about 20-30% more efficient than the old APP310.
I have a feel that Audi will follow suite, their current iterations look and feel really REALLY cheap like cost cutting cheap far cry from the 2010's hayday
This one doesn't look bad. I'd seen some reviews of others that were square enough that it was noted to be a little annoying when turning -- one of those things you tend to get used to after a while.
It was actually worse in previuos gen VW products - it was touch sensitive "buttons" and "sliders", combining all the downsides of both real buttons and screens without any of the benefits.
With EV sales crashing in the US, an anti-EV administration and huge tariffs on European-made cars, what makes you think VW would be dumb enough to try to sell this car in the US, a market that doesn't even like compact hatchbacks (ICE or EV) in the first place?
Also why would they be dumb enough to sell it elsewhere? It has no performance, the base model supports max 79kw charging which is truly awful and being VW is going to be unable to compete with the influx of Chinese cars that simply do much better.
VW is fucked right now if they think this is a competitive car.
Oh I know it won’t happen because of the factors that you listed, but I hate that VW lumps in Canada with the US market every time. Am I not allowed to dream? Golf Sportwagen sales were something like 30% of VWs sold in Canada before VW pulled the plug because they didn’t sell well in the US.
Because Canada is too small a market to bother shipping cars that cater specifically to it over to North America at all. They’ll get the US’ leftover slop and they’ll be forced to buy it and love it.
We got some cars that were exclusive in Canada and not offered in the US over the years in low volume too. Like the Kia Forte5 a wagon version of the Kia forte the last Gen C Class wagon, Nissan Micra, and the first Gen Toyota Yaris hatchback.
I don't think like 3 years ago is "many" but yeah it appears they axed it a bit ago in favor of that new EV lineup. Though I'm still seeing a lot of them around town, that's why I was sure they were still on sale
Because they think their anecdotal interest is more representative than actual data, just like the rest of the car enthusiast community who cry for small lightweight manual transmission vehicles despite the utter lack of consumer interest
They're not wrong though, small cars do quite well in Canada, particularly in Quebec. Often automakers will bring their small cars to Canada JUST for Quebec.
I didn't say "the only thing people want are fun small cars", I meant "lots of people in canada appreciate a fun small car they can zip around town in, and is easy to park"
Canada has always sat pretty much between US and European tastes when it comes to cars. There are lots of folks driving the F150 because they like it. But there are also a ton in fleet service.
Mercedes sells the A-class hatch in canada, but not the US. Nissan only sold the versa note in Canada, not the US.
There is precedent for the Canadian market enjoying small cars more than the US market.
There is precedent for the Canadian market enjoying small cars more than the US market.
I don't know that it's so much enjoyment as much as we're poorer overall and our fuel prices are higher. i.e. many of the same reasons Europe historically went for smaller cars.
Canada gets lumped in with the US because we adhere to US regulations and safety standards but not EU ones. If we rewrite Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to align with EU minimums, or make it so any car that meets EU standards automatically meets CMVSS, then there is more of a case for EU manufacturers to send some cars over. But right now, there is basically no incentive to do so since the cars need too much modification.
Also keep in mind that if we start allowing EU cars in, you may not be legally allowed to sell them in the US. Just something to keep in mind.
Golf Sportwagen sales were something like 30% of VWs sold in Canada before VW pulled the plug because they didn’t sell well in the US.
I specifically remember back then being unable to find a Golf Sportwagen when we were looking to replace my wife's Passat but they were NOWHERE to be found!! We ended up buying al Allroad instead.
VW sitting here trying to tell us that wagons don't sell well while either making them only for the rich or straight up so scarce that no one can find them!
Doesn't matter now, can't afford a new car these days anyway.
I’m in the same boat. I picked up a ‘16 Sportwagen with the EPC light on for the wastegate for super cheap and will keep that as the daily until I can find a used clean Alltrack that needs work for cheap.
a market that doesn't even like compact hatchbacks (ICE or EV) in the first place?
I know this is purely anecdotal, but I see plenty of Civic and Corolla hatchbacks on the road. There's definitely a market for it. It's just not as big of a market as the compact CUV.
I'm wondering if the crashing sales data is a lagging indicator. With oil prices rising and no real end in sight to the ME war no less the lag in the system for reconstruction and getting oil wells working, and with used EV's flying off the sales lots are we about to see a big jump in new and used EV sales in the coming month's data? I really hope VW brings this car to NA
That's a pretty dense grid of nine identical buttons (with blanks!) plus a rocker switch per spoke. It doesn't look like the center column in the arrow matrix is raised, either?
It still looks like design took precedence over ergonomics.
This might be asking too much given the price point of this vehicle, but having actual distinct feeling of each button would help. They all look relatively flat so it seems like you will generally need to memorize location and not be able to depend of feel as much. Obviously using it would be required for a final judgement, but just from the appearance, this doesn't seem ideal. Still a step in the right direction.
Never tells the truth, during last eqs facelift said he likes it now but in 2026 facelift video said he doesn't like design. Then said new s class is amazing but when facelift came out, said noise cancelation was annoying and unplesanat, and facelift of course, doesn't have it. That and animal skin comments. Just another reviewer who praises 99% of the car and names flaws a tells the truth only after facelift / new model.
I very much doubt it. Canada is lumped in with the US market most of the time unfortunately and there is no fucking way VW will sell this car in the US under the current anti EV administration.
If you would have read into the matter: the next one will be called ID Golf. The reason the current one isn’t, is because VW finds that it does not have what it takes to be called Golf.
Yeah, in my head Cupra's just meant to be the hotter SEATs, but now they make what would have been SEAT spec versions of Cupras and it all seems a bit of a mess.
They left Cupra with the old layout, just changed to plysical controls on the steering wheel. Same thing with the Born facelift that launched a few weeks back. I guess they want Cupra to be the trendy, youth-oriented brand, so they went with the "modern" design for them. As a 20-something guy I'll gladly be lumped with the old farts if that means I get more physical controls.
We get the id.4 and the id.Buzz and that’s it. Also hard disagree on the e-Golf, we’ve had two and just love the MK7 platform, it’s great to drive and cheap to own, but limited by the compliance car roots
I guess with the limited selection you guys have in NA the e-Golf is decent but over here in the EU it's just awful when compared to EVs in a similar price range. The ID.3 is about the same price but way better in pretty much every single aspect.
Well, the e-Golf hasn't been on sale for like 5 years, so it's a bit weird to compare it to existing models. But yeah, the ID.3 is miles better. I'm a bit sad that with the refresh not following the new naming structure, it likely means the ID.3's form factor will be gone when they transition to the ID.Golf. The ID.3's design is amazingly clever and much better than a standard hatchback.
Ok yeah, that makes more sense. I guess the e-Golf might fetch a premium given that it's built on the Golf Mk7, which was acclaimed for things like interior quiality and overall refinement, while the initial iteration of the ID.3 rightfully got some bad reviews and so the sentiment is negative for them. From a purely driving and EV specs POV, I'd get the ID.3 100% of the time, but the e-Golf is much better in other areas, so if you don't need the range maybe it makes sense to cost the same, I don't know.
It looks cool! Kinda funny though those steering wheel buttons all appear to be the same shape, size and texture, once again making them harder to use than earlier button concepts. Its not just about buttons existing, but about their form being functional too
Yeah, I know hating on buttonless cars is the easiest thing to agree on but this doesn’t look that much more functional barring the physical feedback you’d get from pressing a button.
The steering wheel buttons could have been laid out differently but to each their own I guess. Seeing physical buttons does make me feel like the world is healing.
Also, I dig the flat bottom steering wheel. When I'm cruising, I naturally want to rest my hand on the 6 o'clock position but so many vehicles make that uncomfortable or impossible.
The ID.3 has been one of the best selling EVs in Europe for 5 years.
The "strange shape" is because of the battery pack in the floor and the short bonnet to maximize interior space without making the car lager. The ID.3 is significantly bigger inside than the Golf, despite being basically identical in size on the exterior.
I am tentatively leaving this up for the moment. It barely passes the smell test for being useless vibe coded and promoting a company. Also, keep the discussion civil or I’ll delete.

People: we want physical buttons.
VW: puts 84 buttons on the steering wheel.
Previous_Platform718@reddit
Does anyone else find the steering wheel looks like it's upside-down when the wheels are pointed forward?
tykit2RIDE@reddit
Please bring this stateside, we love our e-Golf but need more range to use it for anything but a local commuter
Parcours97@reddit (OP)
The e-Golf is pretty shitty imo. Don't you guys get the normal ID.3?
tykit2RIDE@reddit
We get the id.4 and the id.Buzz and that’s it. Also hard disagree on the e-Golf, we’ve had two and just love the MK7 platform, it’s great to drive and cheap to own, but limited by the compliance car roots
Parcours97@reddit (OP)
I guess with the limited selection you guys have in NA the e-Golf is decent but over here in the EU it's just awful when compared to EVs in a similar price range. The ID.3 is about the same price but way better in pretty much every single aspect.
JC-Dude@reddit
Well, the e-Golf hasn't been on sale for like 5 years, so it's a bit weird to compare it to existing models. But yeah, the ID.3 is miles better. I'm a bit sad that with the refresh not following the new naming structure, it likely means the ID.3's form factor will be gone when they transition to the ID.Golf. The ID.3's design is amazingly clever and much better than a standard hatchback.
Parcours97@reddit (OP)
I'm comparing a used ID.3 with a used e-Golf with similar milage and features. Both start at around 14k€ over here.
JC-Dude@reddit
Ok yeah, that makes more sense. I guess the e-Golf might fetch a premium given that it's built on the Golf Mk7, which was acclaimed for things like interior quiality and overall refinement, while the initial iteration of the ID.3 rightfully got some bad reviews and so the sentiment is negative for them. From a purely driving and EV specs POV, I'd get the ID.3 100% of the time, but the e-Golf is much better in other areas, so if you don't need the range maybe it makes sense to cost the same, I don't know.
ohitsanazn@reddit
I think the e-Golf new wasn't a great deal, but they can be had pretty cheaply nowadays (10-20k USD)
Perfectly serviceable car for A->B commuting. Jason Cammisa also dailies one and it takes MQB parts which is cool
familyguy20@reddit
Nope just the ID4, which they are discontinuing it seems
man__i__love__frogs@reddit
I'd kill for this to be our second car in Canada.
dumbledayum@reddit
Looks worse than Model 3 and has lesser range plus worse software.
BigSnackStove@reddit
Honestly, great improvement on the interior specifically. Looks modern and usable, no piano black, no touch capacity buttons, physical AC controls.

REAR WINDOW SWITCHES?!?
The worst thing about my car is the fact there aren’t driver rear window controls.
Francoberry@reddit
It looks cool! Kinda funny though those steering wheel buttons all appear to be the same shape, size and texture, once again making them harder to use than earlier button concepts. Its not just about buttons existing, but about their form being functional too
OfficialQuark@reddit
Yeah, I know hating on buttonless cars is the easiest thing to agree on but this doesn’t look that much more functional barring the physical feedback you’d get from pressing a button.
masterventris@reddit
Shame the charging speeds still aren't great, as everything else looks great.
I used to own a launch version ID.3, and this is so much nicer than the one I had.
p8ntballnxj@reddit
The steering wheel buttons could have been laid out differently but to each their own I guess. Seeing physical buttons does make me feel like the world is healing.
Also, I dig the flat bottom steering wheel. When I'm cruising, I naturally want to rest my hand on the 6 o'clock position but so many vehicles make that uncomfortable or impossible.
RiftHunter4@reddit
This would pair well with a Macbook Neo.
wimpires@reddit
Huzzah physical steering wheel buttons and dedicated HVAC controls🙏🏽
ajyahzee@reddit
Let me guess, not coming to North America?
tmchn@reddit
I dont' get why this should be a strange MPV/hatchback crossover and why they simply can't electrify the Golf
This car is simply ugly and won't sell
linknewtab@reddit
The ID.3 has been one of the best selling EVs in Europe for 5 years.
The "strange shape" is because of the battery pack in the floor and the short bonnet to maximize interior space without making the car lager. The ID.3 is significantly bigger inside than the Golf, despite being basically identical in size on the exterior.
John_Sux@reddit
So that's the Golf Mk9 right
linknewtab@reddit
No, just a major facelift of the ID.3. The Golf Mk9 is based on a completely new platform (SSP).
vhs29@reddit
Nope, that one should be coming in 2029 or so

Looks like they addressed almost every complaint (apart from price).
three_martini_lunch@reddit
I am tentatively leaving this up for the moment. It barely passes the smell test for being useless vibe coded and promoting a company. Also, keep the discussion civil or I’ll delete.
Shadow_Ass@reddit
Nice interior but too expensive for my taste. 47k for the biggest battery is crazy

Good stuff

BUTTONS!!

Thanks to this article, I now know that VW's "Appliance the car" design language is officially called "Pure Positive"
