Seriously: none of my other 45+ friends seem to be up after 11 and I can't sleep before then unless I am drugged or inebriated in some fashion
Mindless-Employment@reddit
3:48 am. Still awake😆
TripMaster478@reddit
Same. Always been a night owl. Back before texts and whatevs my other night owl friend and I used to phone each other after midnight regularly because we were the only ones awake.
RedditSkippy@reddit
Covid really pushed me into late nights. It’s after midnight. I gotta go to bed…
railworx@reddit
I dont think ive 45 friends over the course of my entire life
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Lol same - I meant friends over 45 years old. I have like, 6 friends
Solid-Wish-1724@reddit
Lol
MartyTheYounger@reddit
Wait. You have more than 45 friends?
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
No, I have like 6 friends - i just meant friends over 45 years old but i phrased it weird
KatJen76@reddit
Very much a night owl. I usually go to bed between midnight and 1. If I have a vacation, I can go full nocturnal very easily.
RaccoonHaunting9638@reddit
Always a night owl !!! Even as a kid, I loathed getting up for school. My daughter got me one of those Ancestry tests for my birthday. They have a traits section, and it said my DNA shows a night person! Holy shit
Random0s2oh@reddit
58yo night owl. I inherited it from my father. We spent many nights fishing.
l00ky_here@reddit
I generally try to beat the sun. If Im asleep before the birds start waking up, thats still "not up all night" in my book.
thecardshark555@reddit
Im usually up until 1 or 2pm. I need my time to read and watch ridiculous videos on YouTube.
Waffuru@reddit
2am for me, been a night owl my whole life. Heading to bed now, but only because I have a dog that wakes me at 9am sharp for his wet food XD
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Lol my current doggo sleeps until 11pm and then gets up and is ravenous for food and attention
Waffuru@reddit
Mine gets me up at 9am, eats his food, then goes back to sleep until noon XD
Blue_Henri@reddit
I have to try to get to sleep soon so that I can do the five am cat-el Duke “give me my food” tantrum before little lord Fauntleroy wakes up the doggie who will then want to be let out to pee and come back in fifteen minutes later after she’s done a perimeter check. Husband sleeps through the whole thing as I stumble around.
Waffuru@reddit
My dog knows better than to wake me at 5am, he'd be a rug shortly after XD It's bad enough he gets up at 9am. x.x He'll climb up on the pillow, put his nose to my ear, and do these soft, high whines x.x shakes a tiny fist He's worse than my old Nickelodeon clock.
Bear_Salary6976@reddit
My wife and daughter are in bed by 10. I can't fall asleep before midnight. For that reason, I started driving Uber. I figure that is more productive than drinking beer while watching tv.
hapster85@reddit
I was like that until I retired, because I started work at 7 am. Even on weekends, I was rarely up past 11 pm.
Now though, I'm often up past 1 am. Sometimes even as late as 3 or 4. At least twice in the past few months, I've been up until 5. Watching a movie, binging a show, playing a game, or whatever.
The dogs don't care what time I go to bed, but they want to be up by 9. So there's usually a nap at some point during my day. But who cares? I'm 59 and enjoying my retirement.
WATAMURA@reddit
Yup.... I have to force myself to go to bed by 1AM.
Between working night crew at a grocery store in my early 20s (11PM-7AM), doing all nighters in College and Design School... I can stay up all night, no problem. Working is the only thing keeping me from having a completely chaotic sleep schedule. When I am on a staycation, I inevitably stay up till dawn.
galtscrapper@reddit
Yup.
Cannot go to sleep before 10 at the EARLIEST, or it will be a nap and I will be up anothe 6 hours minimum, possibly all day.
mentalgymnatician@reddit
I’ve been a night owl since college. Never in bed before 1, sometimes 2. Been doing that for almost 40 years.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
I saw this last night at 2am.
Wrong_Pen6179@reddit
Night owl for life! I’m usually not in bed before 1-2am.
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Hahaha I feel like I get up so early now that I am an honorary night owl.
Over-Cod1796@reddit
I am be convinced to be a Night owl…
Creative-Teddy@reddit
I'm a night owl. It's a reason I went for the night shift but I'm medically retired now so I'm up with nothing really to do until I fall asleep around 2/3.
Corpsey_Clownshoes@reddit
Yup, Since high school in the early 90's. I'm a solitary creature and I love the night. Quiet+less people.
kobuta99@reddit
Always have been one. I've been able to condition myself to sleep between 12 and 1am for work, but on weekends, it's still late. 8 definitely can't pull all nighter anymore, but I still stay up late without a problem.
zipzipzip246@reddit
Wait till you hit your fifties and sleep is like herding cats.
radgedyann@reddit
never asleep before midnight, and i’m at 6 for work. my sweet spot with no alarm needed is like 2am-9am, but i only get to do that on weekends lol. can’t fond a job that allows that schedule. i’ve always been a night owl.
MinusGovernment@reddit
Always have been. I am more prone to random naps during the day now though. I partly blame my dogs that like to snuggle as much as possible so I lounge on the couch instead of sitting like normal more often than I used to.
Camaschrist@reddit
I have been a night owl as long as I can remember. I was the youngest and my sister and cousins would fall asleep when we were watching Sinister Cinema and I would be the only one awake and terrified. I get about 5 hours of sleep which I need to work on. I don’t take naps because I wake up sugar crashing and angry. Not that I could fall asleep anyways.
stomperxj@reddit
Normal bed time is 1:30am
Aggressive_Power_471@reddit
i have always been a night owl. Doesn't matter if I have to get up early. there will be a night once a week at random where it catches up with me and I crash at 9pm.
Ok_Tanasi1796@reddit
My twin!
guzzijason@reddit
I’m a victim of Revenge Sleep Procrastination. In my perfect world, I’d be in bed by 10 or 11. In reality, I seldom get to bed before 1 am. No good reason.
Snoringdragon@reddit
There's like an 1hour/2hour of missing time by the time you turn off the light. I know technically it was me farting around, but it feels like a blackout when it finally hits you how late it is...
guzzijason@reddit
Yes! I am conscious of the fact that I go to bed late, but even when I make the decision to call it a night, it’s always another hour before my head hits the pillow.
My saving grace is that I’m not an actual insomniac - I’m usually out like a light 5-10 minutes after I get to bed. And I don’t have a job that requires me to be ip at the ass-crack of dawn, so I still manage to get decent sleep usually. Very little incentive to change.
And obviously, we have no kids! (Wife is just as bad as me, if not worse).
DeaddyRuxpin@reddit
Every damn night I nod off for 15 minutes between 7 and 8pm while watching TV. It doesn’t matter how hard I try to stay awake, I always fall asleep. But after that 15 minute power nap I’m wide awake until 3-4 am before I can finally convince my brain to turn off.
Snoringdragon@reddit
Argh! No naps! NO NAPS! That's me. My body gives a 15 minute snooze the credit for 4 hours. Then you are up plying Rollercoaster Tycoon until 2 am. Just like the old days!
Toobefaaaaaiirrr@reddit
Night owl 🦉 and lifelong insomniac. I work until 10-12pm try and sleep about 2-3. Some of my friends get up at 5am and I could never!
Snoringdragon@reddit
There should only be one 5 o'clock a day. Pick one and stick to it. Lol!
bloobityblu@reddit
Lifelong night owl for sure.
Nope it was not just a phase.
Magica78@reddit
Born to be awake at night, forced by society to work 6am-3
ItsRedditThyme@reddit
I'm a night owl. If I'm getting a straight 6-8, my body settles into a sleep schedule or 3am to 9-11am. Problem is, my wife, who is the only income, is, too. That means it's my responsibility to get up to get the kids to school and care for the cats, who won't let me sleep past 5. Half of the days, I can go back to bed for a nap. I usually crash around 9 or 10, and wake up with my bedtime routine, so I don't actually fall asleep until 12. My wife comes to bed between 1 and 3, and wakes me up. I nod off while she's getting ready to shower, and she wakes me up showering. Then one of our cats wakes me between 4 and 5, and pesters me until I get up at 6.
Informal_Daikon_9812@reddit
I'm in the same boat as you, but I work from home. I fave 7 cats who like to bother me and the mrs if we don't close the bedroom door and even then we have one persistent cat who has to scratch at the door to go out (he's the only indoor/outdoor cat out of the bunch)
Informal_Daikon_9812@reddit
Man I'm up until 2am and I get up around 9am-11am. On the weekend, if I'm lucky to not get dragged out of bed, I can sleep until 1pm. So what do I do up that night? Usually watching YouTube or old movies. I started doing this when my son was born and I would feed him in the middle of the night. After he got older, I just kept doing it. I've always been a night owl, the nighttime is so quiet and peaceful.
NVJAC@reddit
Definitely. I worked swing shift and weekends for about 20 years before moving to a traditional work schedule about 4 years ago. I still find myself staying up until close to 1 am.
nakedonmygoat@reddit
I've been a night owl since I was a little kid. It's a great time for reading or indulging hobbies without interruptions.
Etrigone@reddit
Even if I go to bed early (very rare), the fur child is crepuscular and wakes me up. So, I need to go play with her and then even if I wanted to I'm up for a bit.
Works out fine since direct sunlight makes super pale me combust. I've been trying to avoid the daystar for decades.
kebmillard@reddit
I go to bed between 1a and 2a. I get up at 7:30a. Have for decades. I’m up late whether I’m busy or not. My brain just isn’t tired before the a.m.’s
Zipper-is-awesome@reddit
I have terrible insomnia. If I don’t put a structure like: eat now, shower now, eat again it’s just one very long day, light sometimes, dark sometimes.
MargieBigFoot@reddit
How do you use eating and showering to help sleep? I ask as a fellow insomniac.
Zipper-is-awesome@reddit
I will first mention I do have dogs. So 3 alarms go off every day: 7am breakfast, 12:30pm lunch and 4pm dinner. Even if I put the phone on silent, they do not forget. So I eat breakfast with them. I eat dinner later, like 6pm. Even if I know I’m probably not going to sleep, I take a shower before “bed” I do a whole skincare, brush/floss and lay down and at least try. This is sleep hygiene, I know at some point for at least a little I can kick into a normal circadian rhythm if the drugs work, no guarantee. So, this is the time in the day for sleep. The dogs also know this routine.
I keep that up. If I feel like I’m going to pass out in the not-sleep time. Max two hours, no matter how long I’ve been awake. I have bipolar disorder and not sleeping is very bad. Like I could be awake for 5 days and the walls look like they are melting. If my routines don’t work, I have no choice but to take a huge dose of antipsychotics to knock me out. But I don’t like to do that. It feels awful the next day. Eventually the routines work. Maybe not for as often or as long as I would like. But enough.
MargieBigFoot@reddit
Wow, I’m sorry you have to deal with that. Your statement “it’s just one very long day” really resonated with me because I feel like that sometimes. I cannot sleep at all during the day—no matter how tired I am. I cannot sleep count on one hand the number of naps I recall taking as an adult. And I can fall asleep at night time just fine. My problem is that I wake up a few hours later and often cannot go back to sleep, no matter how much sleep hygiene I practice. No alcohol or caffeine in the evening, ear plugs, eye mask, chamomile, valerian, magnesium supplements and cream, exercise my butt off but do it early in the day, no screens, etc. My brain just wakes up. And if I didn’t have to work and/or care for kids, I can usually drift off from 7-9am. But unfortunately that is usually not possible. I think I am just very much a biphasic sleeper and there’s not much I can do about it.
Out_of_Darkness_mc@reddit
Weekends! You would SWEAR I lead the party life! Still on “after hours club” time!! All I’m doing is watching something, reading something or editing videos for my YouTube! No loud music, no dancing or drinks! 🤣
myusernameiszane@reddit
Yeah it's complicated. My whole life on the east coast I was a night owl. Moved to the sun belt and now I'm a morning person.
Effective-Usual4152@reddit
I think some of us have circadian rhythms meant for other time zones. I’m a night owl in Eastern time, but a lark in Pacific time….. unfortunately, I live in the East…. 😝
myusernameiszane@reddit
100%. Coming here really activated something internally. I miss my friends and family back east a lot but it would be hard to go back.
therocketn00b@reddit
I used to be. But years of working at 4:30 am killed that part of me. I suppose it's just as well, since I have an 8 year old now. Staying up too late would be really bad for me.
DramaticErraticism@reddit
I used to be, but then I found out it was just a side effect of depression. It was nice to be up when everyone was asleep, as no one could need anything from me and I could be all alone in peace and quiet.
Once my mental health got better, I actually wanted to get up earlier and get more involved in life, was kinda a weird shift.
Duke-of-Glenmont@reddit
If you mean, up at 4 am, then yep, that’s me!
JasonHears@reddit
Yes. Always have been sine I was a kid. My earliest memory is me sneaking out of bed to lie in the hallway to watch whatever my parents had on TV. I think I was maybe 3 at the time.
plantyjen@reddit
👋 Hello! I usually go to bed around three and wake up at 9:30. I’ve always been a night owl, I was the kid getting caught reading in bed with a flashlight at 1AM. I’m also a musician, so back in the days when I was playing gigs, I’d go to bed at sunrise and sleep until noon. Or later!
Brilliant_Activity39@reddit
I spent so many years working overnights or early-morning shifts that my brain wants to live like I'm on Hawai'i time, even though I live on the East Coast. Maybe it's telling me to finally make that move west.
Aamrie69@reddit
I hit the bed around 1am. I can't sleep worth a crap anymore. Too much stuff in my head trying to get out ..
Bobby_Globule@reddit
My sleep has been shot since my twenties in college when I had overnight Motel desk clerk job
elphaba00@reddit
I never go to bed before 11:00. My kids (college age and teen) have always been night owls, so it wouldn't be until after 10:00 that they'd start getting ready. And with everyone a nighttime shower person, it would take forever.
NihilsitcTruth@reddit
Most of my life i have worked later then 3pm go to bed at 4am get up at 10 am. I tried a day shift it actually made me ill. Lasted 7 years of constant migraines and exhaustion. Switched to 3pm to 11pm made all the difference.
Useful-Badger-4062@reddit
Sometimes I check in online around 3:30 am, because that’s when my spouse gets up for work 😬
jonomm@reddit
I am, I never go to bed before 1-2 am, even if I have to get up early.
xxDailyGrindxx@reddit
I've always been a night owl and would often find myself gaming until 3AM. This has changed in the last year since I've been taking care of my mother's seasonal home and I've been waking up early as a result of her not having blackout curtains...
PeterPunksNip@reddit
Yup 🙋🏽♂️. It sucks if you don't like solitude. At least we got the internet. It's true that most older folks tend to go to bed early, even on the weekend, and I miss socialising at night with fellow night owl friends.
Euphoric-Anxiety-623@reddit
I usually go to bed around 3:30 a.m. after I finish the New York Times Spelling Bee which doesn't come out until 3:00. I've always been a night owl even as a child.
violethorizon74@reddit
I am a total night owl. I'm up everyday for work, but rarely go to bed before 1am. I cant fall asleep before then.
Weekends, forget about it. Im up til 3 or 4. Ive always been like this.
ImmediateHospital9@reddit
I'm 50 in a couple months, it's 1:30am here right now, and I'm about to start watching the newest episode of The Boys, having just finished the new Invincible, and the new Daredevil before that. Probably another 4ish hours before I'm ready for bed.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
No. After work, I'm practically done.
I walk the dogs, make dinner, and watch tv for a bit before going to bed around 9:30.
It sucks because I can't even make it out to see a band or any other nighttime activity, unless I'm on vacation or something and have slept in or napped.
But I also have fibromyalgia which causes severe fatigue.
Unver1f1eduser@reddit
I'm with you. I only fall asleep between 12 and 1230am. I'm in bed though by 9pm then it's streaming and Reddit until I'm tired.
jaredjc@reddit
The only reason I go to bed at 10:30 is because my wife goes to bed at 10:30 and it regulates my ability to get up in time for work. If left to my natural schedule, I would be up until sometime in the morning and wake up around noon.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
Yes, definitely up at any hour here.
My spouse and I both tend to have sleep unmoored by any particular schedule, and I tend to drift into polyphasic sleep much of the time (I just slept from 4:30-8:30am and will probably nap later today).
With no kids and very little in the way of external time commitments, that isn't in conflict with other scheduling. Though eye masks are also a common help.
It's not uncommon for one of us waking up causes the other to remember that the concept of sleep exists, causing them to fall asleep (i.e. when "we are getting shifty"). We'd be good at maintaining a continuous sentry when in that mode.
CaydeTheCat@reddit
Right here with you.
WordleFan88@reddit
Even with 20mg melatonin nightly it's rare that I'm asleep before midnight and awake before 6. It's not like I want to be...it's just how it is.and before you start in, I quit drinking caffeine, and I exercise regularly..unless I eat fungummie, I'm not getting 8nhours of sleep

silliestboots@reddit
I've always been a night owl. No matter what time I go to sleep I have trouble getting going in the mornings. I hit my stride in the late afternoons and am most energetic in the early to mid evening. Takes me an age to wind down and go to sleep. I was not made for this 9 to 5 world.
rikerismycopilot@reddit
My favorite shift when I was working was 5 PM - 2AM. These days I mostly go to sleep around 1 AM but I miss my vampiric sleep habits.
tunaman808@reddit
I used to stay up until 3 or 4 most nights. Now that I have a CPAP machine, I've settled in to a pattern of mostly sleeping from 2-8 or 2-9.
But yeah, everyone in my family (aside from my mom and her side of the family) are\were night owls: me, my sister, my dad, my dad's mom. In the 80s and 90s it wasn't unusual for one of us to call the other just to shoot the shit at 1:30 in the morning!
Even though I amaze my wife with my ability to occasionally go to sleep at 4 or 5AM and wake up at 8AM none the worse for wear, I need sleep more than I used to.
TheSpiggott@reddit
My ideal sleep window is 11pm to 7am. I chalk that up to too many years in Food and Beverage.
Phobos1982@reddit
Yeah I’m a night owl. I’ll sleep til 3 pm on weekends.

53 here. I get up in the morning cause thats when the work happens. If i dont pay attention to the time, i wont head to bed until 1 or 2, and thats once i catch it. Ive always been a night owl, though.

My entire life. I am fortunate to fall asleep before 1am, but is usually between 2-3am.
FeedbackExisting4762@reddit
Night Owl here and always have been. My dad used to say, "Oh, you'll see when you get older, you'll be going to bed earlier and getting up earlier."
Nope. 57 years old and I go to bed at 1am during the week. If I didn't have a day job, I'd likely be up until 2-3am most nights and sleeping until at least 10am or so, like I do on weekends.

When we were kids I was such a night owl that they put me on sleep meds so strong that they were taken off the market for safety reasons. Something about hearts stopping in your sleep. I was 8.
Nothing has changed. Turns out that I am actually a terrific sleeper as long as it is on my hours (absolute earliest quality sleep starts at 2 am).
HighBiased@reddit
Yikes! There is nothing wrong with you. Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome is real ✊
CraftLass@reddit
Thank you! I know this now, but when I was a kid I did get severely sleep-deprived due to it. If only there was elementary night school!
My parents told me I was even like this as an infant and toddler. They would come check on me at 2 am and I would be standing in my crib staring at the door like the creepiest 1yo you ever could meet. Lol Or else babbling away as if I was having chats with someone. Sounds like they could have made a horror movie based around my inability to sleep before 2 am!
Responsible_Name1217@reddit
12-1am is bed time here.
bjb8@reddit
I am a natural night owl, If left to me own timeline I probably would go to bed at \~1am and get up at \~10am or so, which is what I would do as a teen when I was working a swing shift,
But since now I have to get to work for 9am it throws that off, but if I go to sleep too early like 9am I will wake up a couple hours later and never be able to get back to sleep, it is like a nap. So I go to bed after 11pm and wake up 7:15am.

kentuckywildcats1986@reddit
In my 20s I worked my way through university while working full time at night (2nd Shift) from about 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Did that for five years.
After graduation, I got a day-job but kept that tendency to stay up until 2:00 AM - 3:00 AM for years, sleeping in until 10:00 AM on weekends and holidays whenever I could.
But about ten years ago, I really started to become an early bird. Now on days off I'm up at dawn to walk the dogs for a mile or so, and I'm usually ready for bed by 9:00 PM.
The only exception is if I get into something interesting - like binging the first three episodes of the latest season of 'For All Mankind', which had me up until 2:30 AM Saturday night.
cabernetchick@reddit
My people! Unfortunately, I have to get up at 5am for work. Sometimes I fall asleep at midnight, 1am, even a rare 2am. I hate going to sleep early because nighttime is my time. I have to make some changes tho—by Thursdays I am a zombie. Everyone says “just go to bed early” but it’s not that simple. It’s so hard for me to fall asleep before early unless I take melatonin.
OneFortyEighthScale@reddit
I didn’t get married til my 30s and was always a major night owl. Now I am up between 5 and 6 am to walk the dogs with my wife. It’s been quite the change.
I feel like if I didn’t have to get up early that my natural behavior would gravitate back to night owl-up past midnight frequently.

I work late shift, but I've always been wired as a morning person. The only reason why I've stuck with it for so many years is because I love the job. But even though I get to sleep between 12:30-1am, I still wake up before 8 and am ready to go. I do take an afternoon nap before work. It's only about 20 minutes, but it's enough.
froction@reddit
Your tone seems to indicate that you think 7ish hours of sleep is not a lot. I would kill for 7 hours of sleep a night.
Chibi-Skyler@reddit
I just wish I could stay asleep the whole night🤣💤 I've never reeally been able to sleep through the night. But when I started working late shift, I discovered that without that nap, I'm dragging by 9pm.🥱

Used to be. I worked for a west coast company while living on the east coast for 20 years. Loved it, up till 1-2 every night, up at 9. Then I took a job with another cimpany that starts at 8. Up at 5, in bed as earlie as i can because i hate getting up early. Cant wait until i can retire and get back in to staying up all night

Yep. My natural rhythm would be to go to bed somewhere between 1:00 and 2:00, and sleep until 9:00 or 10:00 am. Unfortunately, my work schedule doesn't agree with my circadian rhythm.

I work the night shift, so I don't have a choice. Last Christmas I stayed up during the day to hang out with the family, when I noticed that daylight wasn't as bright as I remembered it being. Then I remembered that my glasses have transition lenses.

Myself on the other hand, I'm usually crawling in bed around 8am and getting up at 3pm. If I go to bed any earlier than that on school days, I tend to sleep through alarms, and then our daughter misses the bus. When she's out of school, I'm crawling in bed by 4am, and getting up around 11am.

I read recently that this 8+ full hours of sleep is not how it used to be. In the medieval period, people commonly practiced biphasic sleep, which involved sleeping in two distinct phases known as "first sleep" and "second sleep," with a period of wakefulness in between. This pattern was prevalent before the Industrial Revolution, when artificial lighting changed sleep habits.

Always been a night person. I’ve worked nights most of my life and love it. I think it has to do with being awake when everyone else is quiet. The night shift at my office is fairly quiet and much less chaotic with fewer mgmt around. Like being a latchkey kid all over again.
The rest of my family don’t get it at all and think I’m lazy. I don’t know how many times I explain that I get the same 8 hrs as they do, it just happens from 4am-noon. I usually try to adjust to their schedule when I visit but it’s tough and I always can revert right back to my night schedule in about 24 hrs with a nap or two.
Although, now that you bring it up, I have to say I’m thoroughly disappointed that the large city I live in hasn’t been vampire friendly since COVID. PreCOVID I could go to Walmart at 3am, go grocery shopping at 3am and even get McDonald’s 24 hrs/day. Now everything closes well before I’m off work at 1am. Like maybe 10pm at the latest. Most regular restaurants close at 8pm during the week. What gives? I may as well move back to Bumblefuck City since living in the city gets me nothing more than a random mugging while walking home from work in the big city.
Familiar_Rip_8871@reddit
I’ve always been a night owl too. I wish I could run errands after 10:00pm but I don’t think even Walmart is open late around here. I fall asleep around 5:00am and wake up around 10:00am and that doesn’t really work for the rest of the world. I need to find a job but I’m having a hard time because I want to work nights. I didn’t think people were clamoring for night shifts but I can’t seem to even get a response from any company.
Flight_to_nowhere_26@reddit
I literally lucked into mine at the office. I was recruited for 6a-2:30p and while in orientation a mgr mentioned that they would have a night shift class that they’re trying to fill if anyone was interested. I couldn’t believe my luck to get 4p-12:30a.

I was doing statistics homework. Now Im just ditting here worried about the MRI Im going in for Thursday morning.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Oh, shit! As someone who has had more than a dozen MRIs, I sympathize. Just at least know that those people know what they're doing :-) hopefully you will have a good outcome :-)
CaptJack_LatteLover@reddit
Yea I have hydrocephalus with a VP shunt in my head. Plain English: cerebral spinal fluid collects on my brain, shunt long tube that drains fluid from brain all the way into abdonmen. So Im used to MRIs, CTs, x rays. When it comes to that pesky tube implanted in my head, none of the above bothers me. Its just another Wednesday on the calendar, lol.
This though is for my lumbar spine. I walk on my toes due to cerebral palsy & the pain management dr seems to think the pain is coming from my lower back. The added bonus, lol... I see a new neurologist, hours after this MRI.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Fuck, I am so sorry! I use a cane and sometimes a wheelchair because I've had to deal with my own shit and I've had spinal injections, spinal tap, so many nerve conduction tests. I had a laminectomy and still have a whole lot of neuropathy in my leg, my hand and my back. It sucks! Hopefully everything will go well with the new neurologist. I've gone through three myself :-) it took 30 years to get diagnosed and it still doesn't really have any sort of cure just some drugs they can throw at it. Luckily, I have a nice family who is willing to deal with my shit LOL. Seriously though, finding the right neurologist can make a huge difference. Someone that actually pays attention to everything that goes wrong and can help you with it. Hopefully you will get that!
CaptJack_LatteLover@reddit
Fingers crossed. Luckily my last shunt replacement was in 03 when I was 19. That neurosurgeon was a genius! Stuck it down the right side of my body & its just chilling. Former surgeons were like criss crossing it across my body & typically itd malfunction after 6 - 7 years.
Neurologist is gonna have to team up with pain management. We have to figure something out. Im only working 4 hours shifts at work right now. Yall, I need more $$$$. Give me steroid injection, pain med, whatever. At this point I dont care, just figure it out, please.

My mom has one that goes right up her nose and I have one that covers my nose in a different way so apparently there are a lot of different iterations and definitely don't be afraid to question your doctor about what would be best. They might even test you for which works better? They can get feedback off the machine in some cases

Yep. 3:15am. Watching Netflix, doing laundry, & mopping up water in the basement from driving rain. Been a night owl since I was a kid (57 now). I try to be a daywalker like my spouse, but it never lasts. I'll go to bed after I see a glimpse of the sunrise.
spider_speller@reddit
Same. My husband and I are both night owls. We're both freelancers now, so we've just embraced it.
ryansports@reddit
Always been a night owl. Self employed makes it all work.
Little-Plankton662@reddit
Yep
cosmoboy@reddit
I can't wait until retirement to see what my sleep schedule will be. I go to bed before 11 (it's midnight at the moment) just because I have to go to work. If I don't have to work, I feel like I'd be up until 3am.
omfgwhatever@reddit
Always been a night owl. I've worked graveyard since I was 19, with a few 1st shift sprinkled in. I usually got fired because I couldn't get up on time lol.
I'm on vacation this week, and still keep my same hours. Everybody bitches I'm always sleeping, but they're always sleeping when I'm awake!
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
I worked swing shift and graveyard for a while and I totally get it! Any of my friends that wanted to meet up for lunch I had to shut down because there was no way. Dinner right before work was perfect
HuntIntelligent8820@reddit
I've always been a night owl. I love it.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
I do as well - i honestly hate going to bed before midnight
gigi_2018@reddit
I’m a veteran with severe insomnia. It sucks. I am often awake until 3-5am but still start my day about 8:30am
FlyAdministrative886@reddit
Not a night owl. Morning person. But 3 am is a tad too early. Thanks insomnia!
Shabby76@reddit
I rarely go to bed before 4am. Thankfully it doesn’t impede my life at home or work at all.

I have always been and will always be a night owl. My preferred sleeping schedule is 3 or 4am- 12pm.
Martin_Aurelius@reddit
My coworkers think I'm nuts since I love graveyard shift. In the winter I'll go months without seeing the sun. Everything is just so much more peaceful at night, there's no traffic, there's no managers to interact with. Unfortunately they require us to work at least 1 week of day-shift per quarter so we can attend training and certification classes.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Anytime there was a late night shift for inventory that I could volunteer for I did, and everyone looked at me like i was nuts. Part of it might be an introvert thing? Where I could do work without any customers/patients around? Anyway that an was awesome little break
Dollbeau@reddit
I also never grew out of being a 'teenager'
atlredneck@reddit
I usually start to get sleepy around 4am Ive always been this way I don't feel like I'm fully awake until late afternoons
sarcasticbaldguy@reddit
2am. This is normal.
Tough-Principle-3950@reddit
Definitely, for a long time. A bit too late, these days. I’ll often only crash around 8AM. Too extreme, too late, I’m working on it. But I’ll maybe always up until 2 or 3…
TapeFlip187@reddit
I swear, my caveman ancestors must have bred generations exclusively from within the night watch.

Hey OP. I’m an early bird - it’s 7:45 here in the UK and have been awake since 5:30, so there’s that? Hope you get some sleep.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Thanks! That's awesome. I will probably see from about 1:00 to 7:00. Then I'm getting up to make a focaccia bread for some friends, drive an hour to pick up some medication, and then coming home to make dinner LOL
yearsofpractice@reddit
I love getting insights into other people’s lives, so thank you for sharing!
I’m a married father of two in the UK. It’s currently my kids’ schools Easter holiday (vacation), so my wife and I have taken some time off work to be with them. Today’s looking like we’ll try and get them away from the TV and out of the house… wish me luck!
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Good luck! Hopefully they get some time to enjoy nature and get a break from all the media I'm lucky enough to live on a farm and I'm trying to start some tomatoes and peppers at the moment :-)

My entire life I have been a night owl and luckily my career is based around that so it works for me. I do go to bed earlier than I did in my 20s and 30s but I still stay up until 2:30-3am each night.
Upset_Mess@reddit
It's 2:37 AM here. Insomnia has been a problem for me since childhood.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Oof, sorry you have to deal with that. I had about a 5-year stint where I dealt with chronic insomnia and it totally sucks. Hopefully you get through it
Upset_Mess@reddit
Thanks! Yeah, it sucks. Ambien is the only thing that really works for me since it's the getting to sleep that I have trouble with (took it a long time ago and was able to wake up refreshed and not groggy) but my Dr. doesn't seem to think it's a good idea so I have to OTC sleep aids which unfortunately do grog me out - melatonin does absolutely nothing.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
I will say, when I have had the occasional bout with insomnia they've mentioned Ambien but I'm weirdly nervous about taking it because of some friends that have had some strange reactions to it

If I get to bed before 2 am then I've gone to bed early. Even then I might toss and turn for 2-4 hours before gaming asleep. If I'm playing a game it's not unusual for me to stay up all night and not sleep at all.
GelatinousGoober@reddit
Yeah, left to my own devices I’d be up til 2 or 3 everyday

Necessary-Share2495@reddit
I’m naturally a night owl. I’m also a bartender which helps with letting me sleep late.
Studies show that circadian rhythms while they can be malleable are also genetic. I remember once my mom retired, she started going to bed much later and sleeping in. So I get it from her. She even found a dog that sleeps til 11am.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
There's a circadian rhythm thing is so weirdly crazy! There was a time when I was dealing with a long commute and my wife's pregnancy and I could get only like 3 to 4 hours of sleep and be totally fine? It was weird

Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Same, same. Really, the only way I can go to bed before about 11:00 is if I am drunk or when I take pain pills for my chronic pain. Which I don't like to do! I'd rather have extra time and not be groggy but sometimes I can't help it
ConstantConfusion123@reddit
Hell yes. I suffered through a year of an early 1st shift...I had to get up at 4 in the damn morning. I'm so happy to be at a new job back on 2nd shift! No alarms, get up when I feel like. Get home at midnight and do whatever till bed at 2 or 3 am. It's fabulous. Night owl forever.
Head_Trick_9932@reddit
Yep! Here I am at almost 3am. I’ve always been a night owl and my husband had to learn early on not to wait up for me lol. Menopause has ramped it up even more.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
I totally get that! My wife has done the opposite, since she has been going through menopause, she goes to bed like 2 hours earlier than she used to but also gets up like 2 or 3 hours earlier
kenjinyc@reddit
Yeah never been an early riser. 60 and usually go to bed at 2/3am trying to get to bed earlier, easier said than done.
claudedusk8@reddit
Yup, daily.
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
I usually go to bed around midnight or 12:30 and only that early because I have to get up at 7:40am for work. I would love to stay up later but I'm grouchy if I don't get my sleep!
KoetheValiant@reddit
Been working 3rd shift for the last 10 years does that count
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Weirdly, when I used to work at Costco one of my favorite things was to work inventory where we would start at like 9:00 at night and go as late as it took. Even though I was normally a optician during the day in that department
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
It absolutely counts! As long as you're able to tolerate it.

Yes, and that's why I work 2ns shift. I feel like Im still asleep and dreaming before 11 AM.

5-4am shift here. Im both a night owl and an early bird. Early from my mother and owl from my dad. All I need is around 4 hours of sleep and I'll keep going. When I die I'll probably just explode.
lovemesomezombie@reddit
Or implode... 4 hours is just not enough for me. I did 5 hours for years but am now needing more. I fall asleep around 2 a.m. and get up at 9 ish. I work a pm.shift and cant seem to unwind when I get home.
sgtedrock@reddit
I’m usually up until around 3. It my quiet time… read, play on my phone, etc. I don’t have to be at work until noon, so it’s a pleasant and quiet routine.
La-Belle-Gigi@reddit
Who? (I'll see myself out...)
Seriously though, I've always been a night owl. Going to bed before 2 am is difficult for me. Dozing off on the couch in the afternoons, though, that's pretty recent and not really welcome.
Picnut@reddit
It's after 8:30am here, so I'm up! lol

I can definitely understand that! Where you at? I am in the west coast of the USA. I used to do an a lot of online gaming (and I still do sometimes) and it was interesting to play from people with different countries at like 2 or 3:00 a.m. who are playing in the middle of the afternoon in their respective countries

Grafakos@reddit
I've always been a bit of a night owl, but it became worse during Covid. I got into the habit of going to bed at 3 or 4am and sleeping until 11-ish. Despite sporadic attempts to dial this back by a few hours, I'm still more or less in the same mode.
r2killawat@reddit

I will say this post has been an interesting education in people that are forced into being a night owl by insomnia, and choosing it by being an introvert or just enjoying having the late night time. I hope all the insomniacs get the help they need! I dealt with it for many years.
dadsgoingtoprison@reddit
Sometimes I don’t get to bed until 5am and even then can’t sleep well. Wake up every couple of hours for no reason.

Insomnia is a daily thing
BlinkerPhluid@reddit
Yeah but I work 9-5 with an hour commute. I get about 3 hours sleep on weekdays and 10+ on weekends. I fall asleep around 4 and get up around 7. It sucks. I got heart problems and take meds but TBH I'm just looking forward to the great big sleep.
Mr_Horrible@reddit (OP)
Yeah, jeez that would be tough! I can tolerate only getting 4.5-6 hours okay but 3 would drain me

11:30pm for me. Had a midnight deadline yesterday and worked up to almost the last minute. Took 3 hours to cone down from the adrenaline rush and fall asleep.
