best electric bikes 2026 for commuting and weekend rides?

I’m looking into getting an e-bike now.
My main use would be daily commuting, but I also want something that can handle longer rides on weekends. i’d prefer something that doesn’t require constant maintenance.
I’ve test ridden a couple briefly, but not enough to really compare how they perform.
Which electric bike would you say is the best in 2026 for mixed use, and what ended up being the better choice for you?

The Priority Current Plus is a solid bike at a reasonable price. If you're a Costco member, you get another 20% off. I test rode one in NY and when my current beloved commuter bike dies, that's probably what I'll get. It's the biking equivalent of a Toyota Camry - not flashy, but built to be dependable and low maintenance. Has a belt drive and internal gear shift as well (no chain maintenance). Great torque, removeable battery. Did well with no rattles when I rode it a couple of blocks on cobblestone. Comes with fenders. Decent range.

I look into that. Did you notice anything you didn’t like on the test ride, or was it mostly just the it does everything well enough kind of feel?

I didn’t like that I could hear the motor. I’m a little spoiled with how quiet my current motor is, can’t tell by listening if it’s off or on. But i could hear the whine of the motor on the Current.
I’d also prefer a name brand motor and battery.

Hi. What kind of commute distance are you planning daily?

Old Vado is great, the new Vado is mental.
Either or, both great.

First of all budget everyone has a budget… but generally look at you local market (no point of recommending something that you cant get) and find a bike with one of these motor brands, yamaha, bosch, bafang, gobao… (or even if you a baller, pinion) and 500-800wh battery (usually good enough for a 100km ride (at eco mode) and road bikes use somewhat less power so smaller battery is needed. The rest just what you like. I have a E-SUV myself and i use for everyday tasks, commuting, longer rides in forest and city. Personally I recommend a E-SUV seems like its a unappreciated bike type… hope you find something great for yourself.

E-SUV is interesting, I don’t see that category talked about much but it makes sense for mixed use like commuting + weekend rides. How do you find it in terms of weight and handling in the city, especially for everyday errands or tight storage?

Maybe something belt drive and single speed.

Go to your local bike shop, test ride, and talk to the sales rep to find the best fit for you. There are far too many styles to list here and the one you pick may surprise you.
