What happened to Holograms?

Holograms seemed to be everywhere, and I thought they were the coolest. Now, I barely see any. What were your thoughts?
bjgrem01@reddit
I have a little pyramid i can set on my phone to watch hologram videos with. A Perfect Circle did a whole hologram video for their last album.
https://www.aperfectcircle.com/hologram/
LtPowers@reddit
That's not a hologram.
bjgrem01@reddit
The Oxford English dictionary defines a hologram a three-dimensional mage formed by the interference of light beams from a laser or other light source.
So yes, it is.
LtPowers@reddit
It's neither three-dimensional nor formed via light interference.
bjgrem01@reddit
Then you haven't used the pyramid. It causes the interference in the light and you can indeed see a 3 dimensional image in it. When you turn the phone the angle changes.
LtPowers@reddit
The pyramid ... "causes the interference in the light"?
Do you know how actual holography works? Do you understand what they mean by "interference"?
bjgrem01@reddit
No. I know how a RAID5 hot swap configuration works, I can set up a headless server, and I have a full understanding of Azure administration, but I never took the time to truly lean about holograms.
LtPowers@reddit
That's okay; it's an advanced topic. I don't know all the gritty details myself. Suffice to say that the interference referred to in the dictionary definition is a very specific optical phenomenon that a cell phone screen cannot replicate.
There's a good overview at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holography#False%20holograms
bjgrem01@reddit
Interesting. Ill have to check it out. So I guess the other thing is simply a 3 dimensional illusion.
LtPowers@reddit
It is an illusion, though again I'm not aware of any way to make it truly three-dimensional. Maybe stereoscopic, but certainly not to the point of being able to rotate it arbitrarily.
Serrajuana@reddit
Where did you get the pyramid? I am a fan and need to experience this!
bjgrem01@reddit
They had a special edition of the album that came with one, but since im broke, I made my own following a DIY guide. Basically I got some stiff, thin clear plastic from a hobby store, cut it into triangles, and used clear tape to put it together. Works great.
Rdubya291@reddit
Surry the stuff you bought to make one was more expensive than this one from Walmart?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wartleves-Hologram-Pyramid-Display-Projector-Portable-Hologram-Player-Video-Stand-Universal-for-Mobile-Phone/907285827?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101255041
bjgrem01@reddit
No. And they didnt have those at walmart 8 years ago when i made it.
Rdubya291@reddit
Wow! You were way ahead of the curve.
I honestly can't believe I missed a ne APC album 8 years ago. They were my favorite band for so long. I kept up with Tool, because they kept putting out music more frequently, but somehow completely missed this album.
I have a 4 hour flight tomorrow morning for work, I now know what I'll be doing for some of that time!
Lampposterx@reddit
How often are you finding hologram videos to use this pyramid with?
bjgrem01@reddit
There's plenty of them out there. Its still a novelty though.
GalaxyRedRanger@reddit
I made holograms in college with an argon laser. It was a definitely a process and mine turned out like crap. The holograms themselves are basically pictures of real world objects. It’s not like a drawing.
You’re setting up a real photo shoot, but instead of a camera, you’re using the laser and photographic plates. Or at least we used plates. I guess the corporate manufacturers must use film. We had to develop the plates in a dark room and only then did you realize how bad you screwed up.
If the actual manufacturing process was anything like the way we did it then it must have been labor intensive and expensive as hell. You’ve got to build the model, paint it (we painted ours silver), set up the photo shoot, take the picture with the laser, then go through the development process.
It’s a lot cheaper to just slap some hand drawn art on a sticker and sell that for 10 times the profit.

Jem?
eternallysantanasass@reddit
I should have read the comments first 😂 Jem was the first thing that came to mind. Now correct me if I am wrong weren’t there two versions of the Jem theme song or is it the Mandala Effect? I remember the “truly outrageous” but there was one about her singing “me and my friends are Jem Girls” or something to that effect
Dismal-Confusion7249@reddit
Yes, there were 2. Truly outrageous was the initial theme song, but then in the second or third season when they added the Stingers band as competition for Jem they did the Jem girl song. (I have the series on DVD 😅 and you can also watch on Tubi if you feel nostalgic). This and She-ra were my 2 favorite cartoons as a kid.
eternallysantanasass@reddit
I loved She-Ra. I had all her friends, and the pink Castle Gray Skull 🤣🤣
JennXL@reddit
Me too! It had a little elevator too, didn’t it?
eternallysantanasass@reddit
It did!

ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit

sundayfunday78@reddit
Truly truly truuuly outrageous! ✨✨
djseifer@reddit
And now I remember that they made a live-action movie about a decade ago that bombed horribly.
PlantedinCA@reddit
I didn’t watch it because Jem wasn’t a boss, she was a wannabe and Eric was the hero in the movie. So that sounded 🤢

I picked up some Marvel cards a year or two ago from the early 90's to replace my long lost collection and have been slowly collecting the hologram cards to complete the set.
You're right, the 90's were peak hologram era.
don51181@reddit
I loved those cards. Holograms like that still look interesting to me. These young people are missing out.
GW_Jefferson@reddit (OP)
So awesome
TaquitoLaw@reddit
Out in the California desert, the Tupac hologram wanders relentlessly and eternally
BusinessYou1657@reddit
After the Hirogen were allowed to take the technology to practice their hunting skills, the holograms developed sentience and fought a resistance against their oppressors.
arcxjo@reddit
They should have just used Tosk.

Kids these days are all “I am groot”.
I am Tosk, bitches.

Did anyone else have a hologram gallery/store in their mall?
CherryPickens@reddit
I remember one at the West End mall in Dallas that had a hologram of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald.
travelinmatt76@reddit
There was one in the mall in San Antonio, but that was a 3 hour drive away. We visited the city a handful of times.
Slim_Margins1999@reddit
I usually stop into that Riverwalk mall in San Antonio when I’m in Texas for the F1 race. I feel like that place has to be amazing 25 years ago. It still has some good stuff in it! The kids area with the ropes course thing is pretty rad!
travelinmatt76@reddit
Yep, that's the one. I visited in the 90s because I was in our high school marching band and we were marching in the Alamodome for competition. We placed 4th.
MSB218@reddit
Right on – I grew up in San Antonio! I probably remember the same one you’re thinking of, and there was one in Corpus, too, that we’d go to whenever we went down to Padre in the summer.
Funandgeeky@reddit
Yes. It was amazing. Couldn’t afford anything there, but there was some amazing stuff. I think it was the same store that had the 3D eye posters.
drewcandraw@reddit
The big mall in the suburbs and a fancy downtown mall had LightWave.
SanchoPliskin@reddit
This was so awesome when I was a kid!!
Dry-Construction1262@reddit
Did anyone else have that National Geographic with the hologram skull cover? There may have been two NatGeos with hologram covers, and one had a hologram ad for McDonalds on the back. Truly felt like the wave of the future, but it was likely the last major magazine with a wraparound hologram cover and was 40 years ago.
besleysfw@reddit
I came here to mention this, the McDonald’s ad sticks out in my mind. I have no idea what was in the other side.
DenvahGothMom@reddit
The skull cover was in 1985 and the full holographic cover (with the McDonald's ad) had a globe on the front and came out in 1988. (Yes, I had to google that.) My parents were subscribers and I was fully obsessed with both.
AM_710@reddit
I think its a stalled tech - never more use than decoration - needs a breakthrough
LtPowers@reddit
Holography has plenty of non-consumer uses.
MeepleMaster@reddit
They get used a lot for security stickers
Hntrbdnshog@reddit
Definitely, now there’s one on my drivers license.
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
I remember some Pogs having them.
Maybe not Pogs offically - maybe some rip off variations like Tazos. I cannot remember.
I don't recall ALF being one of them though!
PlantedinCA@reddit
Well there was a Tupac concert hologram in 2012.
And I saw this silicon valley tech themed musical with a hologram character last year, Co-Founders.
spinereader81@reddit
I always liked the textured plastic type. I could never resist rubbing my nails across them.
ericthepilot2000@reddit
My favorites were the hologram trading cards and comic book covers. I still have a bunch of mine from when I was a kid.
There was even a small museum in New York City once upon a time just devoted to it. Closed years ago, but it was a fun time.
RageAgainstTheObseen@reddit
I remember that museum! I bought a top there (the kind that spins, not the kind you wear)
ericthepilot2000@reddit
Pretty sure I did too! They were sweet

Fun-Preparation-4253@reddit
Remember when Wolf Blitzer interviewed a hologram of will.i.am during the election night of 2008? Remember when Snoop performed on stage with a hologram of Tupac? I do think the best use was Madonna performing with the Gorillaz.
pawogub@reddit
They kept turning evil like on Star Trek The Next Generation.
Basic-Biscotti-2375@reddit
I remember that hologram Time Traveler game at the mall that was like $1 to play while the rest was still a quarter. The gimmick wore off for me quickly because it was ridiculously difficult with those quicktime events.
mondomiketron@reddit
After the super buff tupac hologram at Coachella I was hoping they would bring back more dead musicians that way.
IncredibleBulk2@reddit
I don't think about holograms.
JeelyPiece@reddit
I was looking to buy a pair of those hologram eyes glasses for the kids and they're nowhere to be found
Nacho_Sideboob@reddit
Yeah what the hell? I loved my holographic Marvel trading cards. I also had Frank Thomas holographic baseball cards that were awesome.
Rob_Bligidy@reddit
I kinda hoped to see the 2Pac hologram on tour
yinchanvo@reddit
Fellow Xennial Tony Khan, founder of AEW, created a wrestler called Hologram, inspired by NES Pro Wrestling's Starman. More proof holograms made an impression on our generation.
evility@reddit
Al Calavicci will always be my favorite hologram. Then Dean Stockwell died and the Quantum Leap reboot's hologram turned me off so bad I couldn't even watch. No point in holograms if Dr Sam Beckett truly never returns home.
Funandgeeky@reddit
That’s why Bakula never returned for the reboot. Without Al he wasn’t interested. They really should have revived it much, much sooner.
evility@reddit
I agree. Those 2 were wonderful together. My sister and I used to brainstorm reboot ideas. Ours were better.

There is NO SANCTUARY.
edasto42@reddit
They’re still around, just created to where they’re useful and make sense like on ID cards, credit cards, stage performance (my cousin worked the Dio hologram concerts a few years back in europe), and on packaging. The novelty of the masses produced stuff back in the day wore off. Screens also replaced that novelty. Plus a lot of the stuff that was marketed as ‘holograms’ weren’t holograms. They were some kind of reflective illusion, or lenticular prints.
eternallysantanasass@reddit
Do you mean Jem? I think the Misfits got to them
Wodentoad@reddit
Movie was obviously made by the Misfits to slander Jem and her good work at the orphanage.

Hey! Yeah! What DID happen to holograms? Tf?
ratiofarm@reddit
There’s a contemporary artist named James Turrell who made some large abstract holograms that were housed at Mass MoCA for a few years. He does some really amazing large scale installations with light and site-specific architecture that feel like they emerged from the hologram work, but I’m not sure which came first.
bcentsale@reddit
I heard he wrote a novel, sparked a revolution, and ultimately went on to teach at the academy 🤷

Big Hologram was bought out by 2Pac and ABBA
CuriousLands@reddit
Haha, my first thought was Jem and the Holograms. But yeah I get you; I was actually thinking about this maybe a few weeks ago. There used to be this super cool store in the mall that sold a lot of holographic stuff. It was pretty fun. I guess they just fell out of fashion.
