Can any urban archaeologists tell me what this relic is?

I really don’t understand all the revisionist history with Blockbuster. I always thought it was pretty terrible compared to independent video stores. It felt like the soulless corporate version of stores that actually had an interesting variety of movies. They also could have bought one of the most successful companies ever in Netflix, but chose to just laugh at them. I don’t get it.
granadesnhorseshoes@reddit
Is it revisionist? I always just take it as a proxy for video rental stores in general because they were THE ubiquitous example. But certainly don't think anyone has been claiming they were great or even good as a company.
red286@reddit
For a lot of people, there were no independent local video stores anyway.
Where I grew up, in the '80s there were a whole bunch of different independent stores. That was also when movies were rented for $20 and a VCR was rented for $50 on top of that. Movies were $100 to buy the first year of release. Those stores made serious bank.
By the mid-'90s, they'd all been driven out of business by Blockbuster and Rogers Video (Canadian nation-wide video store chain), where you could rent movies for $5 and no one rented VCRs anymore because everyone already owned one, and new movies sold for $20.
Local-Equivalent8136@reddit
Blockbuster was the GOAT for game rentals, it was affordable and you got it for like 4 days which was enough time to beat or realize if you didn't like a game.
It was awesome during a great age of gaming.
SadBattle2548@reddit
We had a cool indie video store where I lived and the employees there were really into film and could answer just about any question you had about any movie, current or vintage. They were the first ones to tell me about IMDb, this was back in the '90s when it was still pretty new. They weren't just people there to earn a paycheck like at Blockbuster.
BritOnTheRocks@reddit
Yeah, Blockbuster always felt sterile and blah, and I much prefer the convenience of streaming from my couch. But I guess I understand the nostalgia if it was a family tradition or something.
rinky79@reddit
Blockbuster (and Hollywood) were good for actually being able to get a copy of the big new release.
Sad_Training_1595@reddit
What you say is true. I am from New York and I miss the independent video rental stores. But that said a lot of people miss Blockbuster because they lived in places where those independents didn't exist.
Another strength Blockbuster was good at was selection of video game rentals. Oftentimes independents couldn't compete with that.
thesmellnextdoor@reddit
I always thought it was weird that the ticket was torn, but it's still the shape/ratio of a full size ticket.
Like, if that ticket is torn in half, then the whole ticket before it is torn would look more like a wristband.
red286@reddit
They didn't tear the whole ticket in half. They tore the numbers off of one side. They left the rest of it intact so that if an usher came to check your tickets, he could see that you were seated in the right theatre.
Funkopedia@reddit
That's why they went out of business

Wow! I remember that. So my mid-sized town had a TON of independent video stores before Blockbuster came to town. A lot of grocery stores also had video rentals inside. So when Blockbuster showed up the biggest difference was size and number of new releases per title. A popular release could have an entire section of the wall or two of just that one title. Which was nice but man they screwed themselves with late fees. Late fees were 15-20% of their revenue, which is a dirty way to do business. So competing video stores just had to be less predatory, not better, to compete. Our go-to video store had an any 3-out for a week for $7 or something like that. So you could just go on Saturdays and not have to run back on a Monday or Tuesday just to return a video.

It really is an important icon of the time. This is the last real monolith of media before streaming internet threw the monkey wrench in everything. People born after the internet don't get how few options people had.
Movies? Theaters or Blockbuster.
Music? MTV or radio.
TV? For anything worth watching. NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS or HBO. Later FOX came in but for years their programming was absolute shit with the exception of The Simpsons.
You have soooooo much more now.
