TBF there is anecdotal evidence (and maybe even real evidence, I dunno) that eating milk products despite your intolerance may foster a gut microbiome that's capable of breaking down lactose, essentially curing lactose intolerance, for a certain definition of curing. Would just be sad if you need to take antibiotics and end up intolerant again.
There's a great thread about a lady mainlining skim milk for two weeks and it curing her lactose intolerance. She had a bunch of science to support her deciding to do it and apparently it works
I read a blog post about some biologist who somewhat successfully did this and it was the opposite. She took massive amounts of lactose to "shock" her system into a new equilibrium. The effects were lasting, whereas small steady doses would just build a small tolerance that would be quickly lost. Keep in mind this was a self-experiment and wasnt exactly scientific but the theory is sensible i think.
Also she didnt go into detail but described the process as extremely unpleasant.
yeah that sounds weird. i mean there might be more to it but as far as i am aware standard intolerance is because you don't have enough enzymes in your digestive tract to work through all the lactose so it needs to get flushed out. personally i got IBS so its just random bullshittery with any random food my tummy doesn't like that day but eating properly prevents most problems
Every once in a while I see a post circulate online from years back. It was about someone that did their college thesis on lactose intolerance.
Long story short, the theory they were proposing was that all mammals are naturally lactose intolerant after they've finished breastfeeding for a period of time. This goes for humans as well, the only reason we aren't all lactose intolerant is because of domesticated livestock and because most people consume dairy products regularly throughout their lifes.
I went until the age of 19 or so drinking milk every day. I moved out of my parents, stopped eating dairy products for a few months, and the next time I tried eating some ice cream I found out I was lactose intolerant.
That is how biology works, mammals stop producing lactase after a while. Why lactase persistence evolved is not as clear, because there are herder communities that consume milk that don't have it (Central Asia), hunter gatherer communities that don't consume milk do have it. So there may be some other factor.
It's like other gut disorders where there can be degrees of expression. Some people have milder intolerance, and it can respond to diet like how you're describing. They likely have some minimal lactase persistence that can be upregulated.
Other people like Bubbleguts here probably have no lactase activity at all and perhaps even a sensitivity/allergy to dairy. No amount of exposure will increase their ability to digest lactose, and if it's the sensitivity/allergy response it can become sensitized and worsen with additional exposures.
Only 1/3 of the world's population has lactase persistence into adulthood, mainly in descendants of the european and other communities that migrated and formed agrarian communities with domesticated animals.
I don't know much about the topic, but my understanding is that most of the symptoms of lactose intolerance occurs from becatia in your large intestine braking down lactose, producing large amounts of gas, among other symptoms. When you consistently consume lactose these bacteria can be outcompeted / replaced by other species of bacteria that flourish more readily when lactose is available. And many of these break down lactose into fatty acids and other substances that do not cause the typical discomfort of lactose intolerance.
Lactose allergy or other allergies to proteins and what not wouldn't be affected by the aforementioned process thoigh
I went from drinking two to three bags of milk a day and then stopped completely. When I would have any milk I’d have serious lactose gut. I’ve slowly improved but still could never drink a glass of milk again.
Through a combination of IBS, Indigestion & Lactose Intolerance, it could. It’s 4chan too so OOP is most likely a morbidly obese person so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
Fun Fact: Lactose Intolerance worsens with age. As you get older, your body starts to produce less and less lactase to break down the lactose found in milk and milk byproducts. While it is true you can trick your body into creating lactase, given time, your body will give up again creating an abundance of it especially if you choose to drink less milk over time. It’s just one of those things your body deems unimportant and instead focuses on other stuff.
Ok but lik… sometimes I’ll eat food or drink too much one night so that I have an absolute gut busting stomach reset shitting day and it always feels better. If I take a nice ass poop at home on the toilet I’m laying down right afterwards and breathing like a baby after feeding time
I was this guy but it eventually stops eventually your body quits resisting. I brute forced my way into maximum dairy consumption because I would not want to live any other way

Can’t you just use lactose free milk and products?

also most cheese doesn't really have lactose in it - you have to get down to the really soft stuff like ricotta and burrata
if you can't eat cheese without shitting your pants you've got something else going on

samsonsin@reddit
Sounds to me like you need to reconsider how tolerant you are to lactose, you colon doesn't seem to agree with you...

Yeah but it’s never like “I’m going to shit myself rn” it’s more “oh I need to shit guess I’ll do it at my earliest convenience”.
