Did i do okay for $250?

Grew up sailing on one in green and white on Lake Erie. Every wave rolled over the top, soaking my backside. Tipped over repeatedly, swim around, hop on the dagger board, pop out of the water and keep going. Repeat over and over.

If she floats you made a wonderful buy. As a kid I had more fun on a sailfish than a person should be allowed. In a big wind, on a broad reach with the centerboard up, these boats go like rockets. Have a great time.
STAXOBILLS@reddit
Was in charge of a fleet of sunfish(pretty much the exact same thing but has a hull that’s a little larger) at a summer camp I worked at, amazingly fun little pieces of junk, even when half full of water(these things were early 90s models and had been kept outside for the last 5 years before I had to use them, the foam on inside was as you expect) they can go decently quick
Sinn_Sage@reddit
If you put that boat in a lake, your satisfaction of the purchase would increase by a factor of ten. Just sayin
Mad_Oats40@reddit (OP)
put her in for the first time this morning. flipped twice, yet my satisfaction is still at an all time high
Sinn_Sage@reddit
Going OB on such a boat is a god given right. Not to worry, it makes you a better sailor. Once you get good enough to stay up on top, then you get to tackle the fun part of tacking and gybing without putting yourself back in the drink.
In the long run, this boat will make you a better sailor if you wish to continue down the money drain.....err.......joy of sailing.

Now you just need a crew
Turbulent_Bet_8300@reddit
Looks great, I had straps on the rails to hook my feet instead of stuffing toes under the rails while hiking out. I also used the tail end of the halyard to rig a little 2:1 vang, was great when reaching & running.

I grew up on the Sailfish! Far superior to the cockpitted sunfish. Have fun!!
Due-Pear-8687@reddit
Let’s Be honest here……… sailfish we’re a lower cost version of a sunfish. With no cockpit they were cheaper to manufacture…….. ( on the downside sailfish are harder to hike out on- hence the flip) but at $250 you did well. The big Advantage is that like a small motorcycle you’ll Move on quicker———‘AnLightning? Many larger boats that can be soloed.

see i thought otherwise but now that ive knelt down on this one i can see how flat deck would feel better. im taking her out for the first time tomorrow
gberger313@reddit
But now where will you grow all your Cyanobacteria!?
Learned to sail on a sunfish. The cockpit is NOT comfortable (imo), even as a teenager, and prone to getting gross if left out. Your setup looks simple and great
Formaldehyde007@reddit
Let’s see the truck you are planning to use to haul that big boy.
Mad_Oats40@reddit (OP)
i got the best truck, the kia soul.

Cool blog post about Alcort Sailfish https://chrissails.blogspot.com/2009/10/alcort-sailfish-my-first-boat.html
Mrjonmd1961@reddit
Had a lot of fun on a sailfish in my youth
greengiant314@reddit
Boy, that’s a thing right there!
Bubbleman54@reddit
Without a cockpit it seems just a couple steps away from being a windsurfer. 😉 I windsurfed a lot around Southern Maryland when I lived there but have never had a sunfish. Would love to find a deal like you did on one of these. They've always looked like a lot of fun.
SigNexus@reddit
Had a used porpoise sailboat with a cracked hull joint. It filled up with so much water we were sailing with 2in of freeboard. Almost crushed the trailer getting it out of the lake. We drove directly to the marina and traded for a new sunfish. Fun boats.
Raneynickelfire@reddit
That's a little steep for what you have bit it'll pay for itself in enjoyment so yes you did just fine!
SaltyMiniMiner@reddit
Had one years ago in the Finger Lakes. Great time.

We used to use ours as a swim platform when there was no wind. So much fun as a kid

My second boat. Go get wet!
Eschatonpls@reddit
This is what I learned to sail on as a 10 y/o. Makes me smile when I see one.
hemi1995@reddit
Awesome Learned to sail on sunnies on Lake Michigan Surfing a wave downwind is epic!
UnclePsilocybe@reddit
Someone gave me a busted up one and I filled it with foam and then took it out during tropical storms on the lake ponchartrain. I have still never had as much fun as that was
UnclePsilocybe@reddit
So much fun
Gmathews666@reddit
You’re gonna have a blast on that!
Single_Ad_5294@reddit
Totally!
That object allows you to sit atop water. If the wind blows you can use that to move. It’s neat.
nerdycarguy18@reddit
What shall we call it? I know!! A windfloat!
unknowingbiped@reddit
Im doubting, but that is what I will try at some point
Mad_Oats40@reddit (OP)
this guy really thinks i bought a sailboat, this is my new coffee table
unknowingbiped@reddit
Why not a planter in the garden? Can I borrow your weird blanket?
Look_b4_jumping@reddit
That's a Sailfish I think. We had those whrn I was a kid.
Glenbard@reddit
That looks like a hell of a lot of fun!
Guygan@reddit
To quote Indiana Jones: "That belongs in a museum!!!"
ElOptico@reddit
That's what I learned on when I was 5yo. The family still had one at our lake house for the grandkids to learn on. It was great fun to take them out and pass on the family love of v sailing.

Christ alive! I thought that was Pat Butcher for a moment.

Yes but does it have a dagger board?
Mad_Oats40@reddit (OP)

stayfly365@reddit
Woah thats mounted high. Is there no cockpit? Looks uncomfortable
CLE1200@reddit
$250 is a steal to get out on the water and start smiling! Wish you well!
