In my opinion, these former liveries still hold up well today. I hate how they were changed in favor of worse-looking liveries.

The fact that Iberia and LOT’s previous liveries were designed all the way back in the 1970s and still hold up well today, in my opinion, really baffles me. Iberia’s current livery looks too bland, and I hate how LOT got rid of the cheat line.
The current Air Canada and BA liveries don’t look terrible, but they pale in comparison to their previous looks. Even Avianca’s current livery looks decent, at best.
The biggest offender, of course, is Korean Air whose new livery is the biggest atrocity against aviation!
Tortex_88@reddit
Love that BA livery for some reason. Not even sure why.. It's technically nothing special.. But my heart yearns to see it on a 747.
jocdoc82@reddit
So true. I love it every time I see it.
Outrageous_1845@reddit
A BA 747 with that livery is the epitome of the Golden Era of Aviation.
DutchBlob@reddit
Before the enshittification of BA
nugeythefloozey@reddit
It’s a great livery, but it looks more dated compared to the current one. We wouldn’t like it as much if it hadn’t been retired
Lolpo555@reddit
It looks extremely corporate, strong and British. Same thing happens to me with the old American Airlines one
fredleung412612@reddit
I would add Cathay Pacific
gm0ney2000@reddit
I was never a big fan of Air Canada's toothpaste livery. I don't mind the tail and sunglasses on the new one. But otherwise it's pretty staid.
Avianca was really nice. Boring now.
BA's Landor livery was iconic. So very British. Their current look is not. Don't like the stylized flag on the tail.
Iberia's was very 70s. Looks like a flying rec room. I'd expect shag carpets in there. New one is kind of dull but I don't hate it.
LOT looks the same now except without the stripe...
Korean's new look is a big downgrade, but I wasn't a fan of the old look.
Q_Pups@reddit
You might be the first person I’ve ever seen say that they prefer the mint toothpaste AC livery over the new one.
Sasquatch-d@reddit
I’ll be the 2nd. I loved the glacier blue look. I don’t know why everyone hated that color so much.
Illustrious_Ad1337@reddit
Yeah and the big maple leaf of the tail looked outstanding. So unique, and immediately identifiable. Especially at airports like Heathrow. The new one is too generic
trex226@reddit
The thing about the toothpaste is that it’s just so different to everything else, and in true Canadian fashion it just looks so damn good against the snow. I love and miss the toothpaste too…
BaboTron@reddit
That paint was beautiful. It was metallic, which doesn’t really show up in pictures.
MyNameWouldntFi@reddit
When they were clean they looked good. When they were working hard and hadn't been cleaned in a while they were extremely ugly lol
flightist@reddit
It looks good from a distance but good lord the effect is lost when you’re up close.
Raging-Fuhry@reddit
I second the toothpaste AC livery as the best one.
The new one is boring and bland, the mint livery just felt very Canadian.
Rptorbandito@reddit
I also think the new AC livery tries way too hard to be a "cool" paint scheme with its black paint around the cockpit. And the got rid of the maple leaf's veins.
Ok_Suggestion_6092@reddit
When I think about tooth paste planes I think Silkway.
seeasea@reddit
That's because they're infringing on aquafresh's logo
armored-dinnerjacket@reddit
waiting for the day someone says they miss this gem of a toothpaste livery

There are dozens of us!
True-Industry-4057@reddit
I might be the one person on the planet who likes both. The old one was iconic, and the new one is so clean.
anotherthrowaway436@reddit
That makes two of us! The old toothpaste livery was great, new one is clean, slick and modern.
ExocetC3I@reddit
I'm always hoping they do a special throwback livery on their 1970s-80s red with the white roundel. Especially now that they have have repainted the aircraft that wore the heritage TCA livery (to the best of my knowledge).
XtremegamerL@reddit
They retired the original A319 the TCA livery was on, but they have since painted a new A220 (C-GNBN) with it.
SciGuy013@reddit
I don’t get it, what’s mint toothpaste about it?
Stunt_Merchant@reddit
I prefer it.
Austerlitz2310@reddit
Nah, I hate the new one too. It feels too simple. Idk what the fad is with everyone simplifying their logos these days. Also, I hate the red on black. Why is black used so extensively in Canadian national events/companies? Sure light blue isn't on the flag either, but it is in theme with the blue sky and light blue/white of the Canadian North.
jhl_x@reddit
I also prefer that one. Maybe it just felt different from all the Eurowhite I see around, but it's not absurd to dislike it. The new one I didn't like it at first but it's not as bad as later livery refreshes that'd later come.
Sour_Bucket@reddit
Nah I also prefer the toothpaste livery. I also like the newer Air Canada livery, but I personally prefer the toothpaste one over it
That_Public_4620@reddit (OP)
I don’t know, maybe I just grew up seeing that livery all the time and thinking it fit Air Canada so well that I developed a bias against the current livery. I don’t like it more by a large margin, but I still prefer it in my opinion.
th3orist@reddit
I love the black engines on the current livery honestly.
Arctic_Chilean@reddit
Same here. AC mint was unique, very distinguishable from the rest of the Eurowhite liveries.
That said, the new one is classy af.
FlatPainting3846@reddit
you gotta be a little slow ngl
fishtankm29@reddit
Have to agree.
blaaaargh811@reddit
Ever since I heard it called that I haven’t been able to think anything else when I see one of those planes.
Kitchen_Swagger@reddit
Oh it's awesome. It says Canada. It's unmistakable. Imagine, you're someplace like, I dunno, Sydney, on a hot summer's day. You're flying to Vancouver where it's winter. And there's the plane and the brand that match exactly where you're going.
Oh, and it's not painted black so it won't get as hot.
Stig21@reddit
I thought the Vancouver 2010 livery on the 777 was pretty nice.

SanAntonioSewerpipe@reddit
Toothpaste is absolutely heinous. 90s AC livery with the black tail was decent.
flightist@reddit
That tail was actually dark green.
SanAntonioSewerpipe@reddit
Canadian goose retro would be unreal on the a350 but that's definitely never happening.
flightist@reddit
It’s a real shame they’ll never do one.
3000doorsofportugal@reddit
This includes Employees btw. Everyone used to call it "bankruptcy Blue".
Hot_Net_4845@reddit
It only works on certain aircraft, IMO. The 767 looks good in the toothpaste livery, but on the 787? New livery all the way
flightist@reddit
Nothing quite benefits from the new one like the 330
uberklaus15@reddit
I always heard it called "mid-air collision blue"
pauliaK@reddit
While I agree that new livery looks nicer in a vacuum, it’s just sooo damn generic. So many airlines have a very similar looking livery nowadays. Old livery was very distinctly and unmistakably AirCanada, and that was cool.
Fine_Trainer5554@reddit
Yeah toothpaste feels lame. Current one is modern and more mature.
Wingmaniac@reddit
Yup, there's a reason why they basically reverted to the previous livery style.
kowahchan@reddit
Hard agree on BA. That old livery on a 747 was pure class.
Skilodracus@reddit
Ngl I actually kinda hates the Air Canada livery. Baby blue is such a dull colour, and while the tail was nice the rest of it was sooo boring.
Enough-Astronomer-65@reddit
My favorite Air Canada livery, i never saw this in person.
aircraft pictured is (or was rather) registered C-GAUN
That_Public_4620@reddit (OP)
AKA the Gimli Glider.
Impossible_Fact_5069@reddit
Aer Lingus has also went ‘less green’ in recent years with its livery and tbh I don’t really like it.
kgaviation@reddit
IMO, I don’t think Air Canada’s “toothpaste” (Frosted Leaf) livery was better. Something about their current red and black livery with the black cockpit window mask is really sharp.
happydad9@reddit
Can't stand the air Canada toothpaste paint. The others are great
hatlad43@reddit
That first picture has no livery at all. They just slapped the company name and logo and call it a day.
Mitchz95@reddit
It's subtly blue, intended to look like fresh snow. Hard to tell unless it's parked next to a white plane.
swagmaster778@reddit
This korean air livery is a thing of absolute beauty

Wish United never stopped the Battleship livery! If they can’t keep it, at least bring back the Tulip.
That_Public_4620@reddit (OP)
I don’t mind United inheriting Continental’s logo, but I would also love to see a modernized version of the Battleship livery.
sourcefourmini@reddit
Continental’s logo does very little for me, honestly. I find it’s generic.
McCheesing@reddit
Looks too much like Copa
FrankReynoldsCPA@reddit
I wonder if 9/11 played a role in that
Dewey081@reddit
I like Air Canada's current "eye liner" livery. Simple and bold. I was never a fan of the Celine Dion frosted blue livery.
spannerintworks@reddit
I don't agree with regards to the BA livery. Landor was really nice but I think the current one is timeless. Almost 30 years later and I don't think they should touch it.
superimu@reddit
The current livery for Iberia is such a downgrade.
hb_fash@reddit
Strongly agree - the current livery looks like a charter airline about to go bust. Waiting for the curse of IAG to ruin the BA livery next just like they did to Aer Lingus.
Fluffy-Proof-5175@reddit
agree, the old one is so much more Spanish then this one
DroopyPenguin95@reddit
SAS' dragon livery was also so nice!https://simpleflying.com/scandinavian-airlines-livery-evolution/
BuskyChowChow@reddit
That classic photo of a 747 in Iberia colours always makes me happy.
JetlinerDiner@reddit
They all look like shit, imo. BA was ok, I guess, it was elegant.
mattyGOAT1996@reddit
I still appreciate the old British Airways Landor livery
The_Arpie@reddit
Can't agree about Landor looks very of it's time and tired. The dirty grey upper fuselage just looks like it's there to save on cleaning rather than any aesthetic. I can see why it didn't last long.
On the other hand thise Iberia and Avianca liveries are still fresh. A few tweaks they could easily be updated for the modern day.
Boundish91@reddit
Landor is so classy.
ZappaLlamaGamma@reddit
I was a big fan of the battleship gray United livery.
mikes7456@reddit
Is that SFO?
langley10@reddit
Problem with it was it just did not age well, the colors ended up faded and looking splotchy.
ZappaLlamaGamma@reddit
Never knew that. Makes sense though
Jeeperman365@reddit
I really appreciate how the way the old Lot logo transforms into the cheat line. It was so iconic and timeless. The new logo is nowhere as visually appealing.
Sour_Bucket@reddit
Nah I also prefer the toothpaste livery. I also like the newer Air Canada livery, but I personally prefer the toothpaste one over it
Bluemikami@reddit
I disagree with the Avianca one, i liked the previous one or the current one more.
PavehawkLLC@reddit
First time my young self is seeing that old LOT livery, and it brings tears to my eyes
Almost as much as the Korean livery change...
No_Panic4177@reddit
Took this a couple days ago lol
DanTMWTMP@reddit
Their new BS is an abomination. I remember someone on their free time made his take on the new livery and it was amazing. As a Korean, his rendition respected the heritage, and also made it modern. The new one is just what the fuck is that.
HistoryAndScience@reddit
I was going to say, I saw so many of these last year when I was in Korea
Mustangfast85@reddit
Korean is the only one on the list I will miss after all the repaints
Brambleshire@reddit
I like their new shade of blue a lot but that's it. If they kept the yin Yang and the AIR but just change the shade of blue I would 💙 it
C4-621-Raven@reddit
Yeah no, toothpaste livery doesn’t really hold up in practice. Especially not up close. Something in that paint has absolutely awful adhesion to both metal and composite structures. It starts peeling and flaking the second you turn your back after painting is finished. And it’s impossible to properly paint match for repairs so it always looks obviously patchy.
The new livery may not be as unique, but the paint actually works as paint.
chloeinspace@reddit
Oh the old LOT livery looks amazing. I feel like their new one makes me think it’s a Lufthansa plane at a glance.
slowpoke2018@reddit
What always confused me about liveries is why would you ever want a dark paint job? Especially if you fly to places like where I live; Texas
Good luck keeping up with a comfortable temp when it's 100 F outside
And yes I know commercial aircraft have ground AC support, but having been on a plane landing at FLL when it was almost 100F outside but we had wait for an open gate was insane
upbeatelk2622@reddit
Tell that to all the enthusiasts who moan about Eurowhite liveries
Saltyspaceballs@reddit
I fly a predominantly white aeroplane and one day late summer in MCO we turned up to find the APU inop. Even with a white livery it was way over 100C in the time it took to unplug the ground air, hook up the ground cart and do a crossbleed start.
Irrespective of colour, metal tubes get hot and humans put out a surprising amount of heat
ReasonableAd6120@reddit
Heard stories about the upper deck on United’s 747s back in the 90s with the battleship paint job getting toasty on long summer TPAC routes
Augustus3000@reddit
The toothpaste livery is nostalgic, but the current one is so clean and elegant while also calling back to their early 2000s livery and the rondel of the 80s livery. I also like how it looks in their previews of the A350-1000.
upbeatelk2622@reddit
The livery before toothpaste was better than toothpaste.
mMaple_syrup@reddit
I remember when all AC planes were light blue, but never knew that was called the "toothpaste livery" lmao
Grizz3064@reddit
I think the newness of the Korean livery makes it proper pop when caught in full sunlight. A lot of the Pepsi Korean liveries looked faded and tired, so I'm kinda liking the new one at the moment, looks gorgeous on their 747-8.
Rayuzan_Mojavec@reddit
No reason to botch the Pepsi logo
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
Tired and faded looks better than their new one
MC_ScattCatt@reddit
I may in the minority but I don’t care for the old Iberia livery. I do miss the polished aluminum AA though. Especially the OneWorld ones
XtremegamerL@reddit
Both AC liveries are solid, the toothpaste has a slight edge when it was freshly painted. The problem is that it looks bad when it fades, and AC is pretty bad at keeping paint fresh. There is still a couple of 787s with the toothpaste livery, and they are looking rough.
3000doorsofportugal@reddit
Yea the main issue with the Blue was that it was almost impossible to keep it looking good. After it started to fade.
Pretty_Aside_7674@reddit
Korean air has the worst new livery like damn
9Twiggy9@reddit
I still occasionally see some AC aircraft with that livery. I actually posted a 777 of theirs with it recently. Its become a little bit of a game when I go to the airport to see how many different liverys I see. I got a Pic of their Zootopia 2 plane but its blurry, so not worth sharing.
YMMV25@reddit
Add the previous AA, CX, and LA liveries to this as well.
meh_whatev@reddit
I like AC Frosted Leaf era but the current livery clears
And I know this is just me in these streets but while the new Korean livery is lazy af, the old livery was in dire need of being refreshed imo, it has aged and not in a good way. They could’ve done something so much cooler but they didn’t
oldbaybridges@reddit
that old BA livery looked so slick!
Arctic_Chilean@reddit
I would add the United Blue Tulip and LAN (pre-TAM merger) livery to the list.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
British Airways current livery is better.
MrNewking@reddit
